Fun between Squires and Knights [Olaf]

Postby Markus Andres on March 11th, 2014, 10:51 pm

Spring 13th, 514 AV
Morning.

”So, squire Olaf, I hear you joining us is a recent thing. What made you decide the knights was the life for you?”

It had become a stable question when Markus encountered a new squire. But it was Markus' way of breaking the ice when he met new squires. Plus he found other people's reasoning interesting. Kreig had, thus far, given him one of the more interesting responses. But perhaps this wild fiery red haired young squire had an equally interesting answer for the knight. Markus green eyes looked from side to side, making sure they were not unintentionally walking into a nest or den out here. But also throwing a glance back to Olaf. Maintaining a genuine smile on his lips. He was glad to be out again.

The two were outside the strong protective walls of Syliras. Beyond those walls that kept them safe, in the wilderness. But Markus was certain he could keep them safe, at least safe enough to warrant leaving the city in the first place. He had always preferred training outside the city. Especially on a day like this. The weather was fine considering it was early spring, but more importantly, the blanket of snow that Morwen had brought was gone, leaving behind much steadier footing. Especially for the close to 230 pounds heavy knight and his 50 pounds of heavy armour and gear. A secure footing was a blessing from the gods. He carried his trusty bastard sword by his left hip. Heater shield over his back. The trees still bare, but give them a couple of tendays and they would start returning to their full green bloom. A day Markus looked forward to, he had gotten tired of the cold weather and he just wanted to be able to go outside without having to pull the cloak closely around him to keep the biting wind out.

Fun between Squires and Knights

Postby Olaf on March 11th, 2014, 11:20 pm

Despite the fact they hadn't been walking for that long. Olaf was already slightly panting and going slightly buckled underneath the weight of his equipment. Just like the knight besides him he was wearing full plate armor. Though his set was noticeably more worn and dinged then the knight's set. A large steel shield was slung over the squire's back, on his belt hung a longsword and with a sling over his back there was a heavy crossbow. Nothing really out of the ordinary equipment wise for a knight. Except for a set of empty jar's that hung from his back from a leather harness. Easily assessable. It was rather obvious that Olaf still wasn't used to walking around with all of that equipment on him. Still, like his patron said. No better way to get used to something then to go out and actually do it.

"Er.. nothing special really ser Andres." Olaf started off unsure. "My father moved on on my last birthday and I was getting to old for the orphanage." He said. His voice panting and slightly muffled from underneath the helmet. "That's what got me in gear about wanting to do something more with my life then just take care of the horses and occasionally take care of a ghost that's annoying people. Since I already was protecting people from confused ghosts. Joining the knights so I could help more people just sounded logical." A small pause. "Well to me at least."

Olaf slipped in a small patch of mud and lost his balance. Now Olaf wasn't a clumsy person and normally he would have been able to keep himself on his feet. But with a heavy suit of armor throwing him off and carrying who knows how much extra weight with equipment he wasn't able to catch himself in time and feel face first in the mud. Olaf was really glad he was wearing a helmet now. At least then the knight wouldn't be seeing him get as red as his hair in embarrasment.

"Er. sorry bout that. Still not used to walking around in armor." He apologized in an embarrased tone and tried to climb back to his feet.

Fun between Squires and Knights [Olaf]

Postby Markus Andres on March 15th, 2014, 4:36 pm

Markus raised a brow when the squire spoke. His father moved on? Orphanage? Why had he been at an orphanage if he had a father? Markus looked perplexed until Olaf mentioned ghosts. Made much more sense then. His father had stuck around as a ghost? Incredible. What a fatherly love. That Olaf revealed he was a spiritist, inadvertently, also made him bringing a jar along make more sense. Not that Markus knew what it was for. His logic for joining the knights were very down to earth and bound in reasonable goals. It was not religious fervour that drove this squire forward. Just a desire to do good and have his life make sense and with purpose. It was easy to tell the squire was new to the armour, he was already worn out from their small walk. It would come in time when his body got used to the armour.

Markus had to stop himself from laughing when the squire fell. It looked comical! With a wide smile on his lips he reached down and grabbed the squire's right arm and hauled him back on his feet again. A chuckle did escape his lips when he saw his muddied face. That was too funny for him to contain the laughter.

"Back on your feet again - no need for apologies. We've all been there at some point. In fact, I am amazed you've kept up this far, normally new squires don't last past the city gates. But a little weight training and bi-daily jogging will help tremendously. Should be a small stream up ahead where you can clean yourself."

Markus turned to walk again. His eye catching his jar once more, still curious about that odd thing. Did Olaf collect small animals or? Only one way to find out.

"What is the jar for?"

Fun between Squires and Knights [Olaf]

Postby Olaf on March 16th, 2014, 2:12 pm

Olaf slapped some of the mud off his armor, or tried to at least, mostly he was just spreading it around on his armor. “I guess so, though It's hard to imagine Ulfric falling on his face because of plate armor. He moves around in it as if it isn't even there.” the very thought just baffled him. “It's probably why I'm doing better then most squires. I haven't even taken this set of armor off except for to sleep since I joined the knighthood. Practice makes perfect.” he responded at his comment of him being slightly better at walking around in the heavy armor. He made sure to look out for any other wet splotches of dirt while walking now though. He didn't want to make another tumble into the mud and embarrass himself even more.

He looked up from the ground back to the knight when he asked another question. “Oh, it's part of my spiritism equipment. Usually I use them to store soulmist in, though today I'm out of it. Didn't have time to make more today. But since I've been storing so much soulmist in it, it absorbed some of it. So if a ghost pops out I can still use the jar to interact with the ghost. Like trap it in there or beat it with it.” He explained, holding up the jar. “It won't last forever, my soulmist isn't good enough for that, but it'll take a few day's to really wear off.” He explained. “that and having jars on you always comes in handy.”

After a while they arrived at the small stream and olaf didn't waste any time to start cleaning the mud of his helmet and armor. Using one of the other jar's to gather up the water and clean himself slightly better.
“So if you don't mind me asking.” He spoke up after a bit. “Why did you join the knights?” Olaf didn't really know much about how to do small talk. So parroting his question back to him would have to do. Not to mention he was kinda curious.

Fun between Squires and Knights [Olaf]

Postby Markus Andres on March 21st, 2014, 4:00 am

"That is a good attitude to have, Olaf." He may be a bit clumsy, but Markus liked the squire. Wearing the armour at all times may be a bit overkill, but he had his heart in the right place.

Markus nodded as if he understood the squire as he spoke. Spiritism. Naturally, something with fighting ghosts. Markus had had encounters with ghosts and mages before, every time they had left him baffled as to what was going on. Their use of magic was almost incomprehensible to him. Most terrifying experience had been with a little child like ghost last summer. Learning to fend for oneself against such creatures might be a good idea. Markus chuckled when she spoke of beating a ghost with the glass jar. That was a silly thought, but he liked it.

"Soulmist?" Markus asked a bit perplexed. Some sort of something that was in a jar. Can be used to beat ghosts with. Sounds useful. Markus watched as the squire cleaned himself in the stream. Markus checked his water sack and it was still fairly full. But thinking about it made him thirsty so he took it out and drank a little. Looking to the squire when he asked his question. Inquisitive youth. His green eyes looked away when he answered the question. Still a dangerous forest.

"My father signed me up with the knights when I was a little kid. Best decision he ever made." Markus said with a smile that stiffened when a pine cone hit him in the side of his head. He shook his head and looked to the ground. It was a pine cone. Eyes narrowed in on Olaf. "Did you just throw a pine cone at me, Olaf?" His voice was not as much angry as it was simply confused.

Fun between Squires and Knights [Olaf]

“I guess so.” Olaf was slightly embarrassed of the slight praise he was getting from a true knight. He had just been a squire for day's. Getting praised for something that seemed to be commonplace just felt a bit strange.

“Yeah soulmist. It's the thing that spiritism is build upon. Without it we can't really make new tools to combat ghosts and bargaining with ghosts becomes a lot harder as well.” It was a short explanation, there was a lot more too it. But he doubted markus would really be interested in the specifics of what it was used for and all. He wasn't a spiritist himself and probably didn't really like magic in the first place. Like most sensible people. He just continued washing himself as markus explained why he joined the knights.

“So was your dad a knight as well? Or was there another reason he signed you up for the knights?” He asked. When markus looked at him and asked if he threw a pinecone at him he just looked at him with just as much confusion visible on his face. “A pinecone? No I haven't.” Just as he had finished speaking something hit him right between the eyes. Causing him to lose his balance and tumble into the stream. He pushed himself back on his feet, water seeping out of his armor as he climbed out of it. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something almost a shimmer in the air. He only saw it for a few moments. But if his suspicions were correct they had an annoying problem. He put his helmet back on, just in time for another pinecone to harmlessly bounce off it. Followed by a strangly echoing sigh of frustration from somewhere in the woods.

“A ghost is playing a prank on us I think.” the redhaired squire said with a sigh. “And if my eyes aren't deceiving me it picked us because It thinks I can't do a lot against it now.” Sure he was out of soulmist but that didn't make him completely without means to handle them. He looked towards the older knight. “you got anything to eat with you? I can make soulmist out of it.”

Fun between Squires and Knights [Olaf]

XX-Season-51X
Staring at Olaf, confusion still painted upon his face. Why would the squire throw a pine cone at him? But the squire looked just as surprised as him. The surprise looked genuine enough that Markus believed the squire. Then he saw the pine cone connect with the squire in the middle of the face. Markus watched bemused as the squire tumbled into the stream. Perhaps his praise had been given a little too soon.

"Who's out there?" Markus yelled, putting every ounce of authority into the voice.

Markus focus shifted from the squire as he struggled to get out of the stream to wherever the cones were coming from. Markus threw his head sideways and a cone flew right past his face. Managed to strafe his earlobe. In the still cool weather, that actually hurt a little. Markus rubbed the lobe as he watched for any more attacks. He didn't feel threatened, just annoyed. The squire was back and Markus turned from annoyed to worried. Last time he had had a run in with a ghost in this forest it had almost been his doom.

Though what the squire said next had him raise a brow in confusion. Food? To make soulmist? What happened to bludgeoning it to ... lack of better term, death with the jar. Markus swung the backpack around and rummaged through it. Looking for the lunch he had packed. Bread and cheese. Took it out as another pine cone struck the side of his head. That petching ghost had nice aim.

"I got bread and cheese." Markus threw both to the squire. "What happened to using your jar?" Markus asked as he ducked aside from cone headed for his face. Harmlessly bounced off of a tree behind him.
