Despite living in Riverfall all her life, Edith has never once stepped into the labor aid office. It's a large, stately building in the same flat white stone as all the others. And for a government building of a very wealthy, testosterone-fueled race, she finds it surprisingly understated. She contemplates this as she pads to a stout wooden desk at the far end of the spacious room, attended by a stout blue man. Wordlessly he hands her an employment form and a housing aid with a bored smile. Edith smiles politely in return and wordlessly refuses the second sheet of parchment. Her apartment in the Cora building is not exactly classy living, but it’s all she needs. Or, more to the point, all she can afford. Picking a spare quill from the desk she steps away to fill out the form in privacy.

Edith looks over her short, scribbled replies thoughtfully, sucking petulantly on the end of her quill. Even to her own eyes that looks a wee bit eclectic and unfocused- especially for someone her age. She wonders what Mr. Blue will think of it, before reminding herself that she doesn't care. A girl can have hobbies. Hers just happen to involve dirt, clay, and messing with the fundamentals of her own body.

Turning and striding purposefully back to the desk, she passes the Akalak her paper. "I could use some career advice, sir, if you have some to give", she smiles sweetly. She has no idea what she's doing, and is doing her best to hide it. "And if you ask me to be the new bitch in your breeding program-", her subconscious snarls behind her smile, "I'll use this quill to give you an unwanted piercing in your pointy little ear."

Summer 1rst 514 AV

A menagerie of colour tittered and chuckled before the boards of the low Labor Aid Office building. It's pale brown stone arched up before her the grass and hedges cut with decisive perfection. Everything about the building was immaculate. Large domed windows decorated each wall with thick wooden bars across each making Jaye twitch with discomfort. Why did Riverians insist on covering their windows? She missed the open wavering flap of the tents in Endrykas, the ever moving air that slid through the door and up toward the typically open peak of the tents keeping them from trapping stagnant air. In Riverfall, as open as everything was and the humid splash of water that coursed through its entirety, the buildings were stagnant.

Many of the foreigners commented on the incredible physical strength of the Akalak but their large colourful muscles had never struck Jaye as unusual. Though much taller than her Drykas family they were as solid and strong as those she had grown up around.

As Jaye pressed her hand to the smooth wax wood of the door she was again startled by the weight of the doors in Riverfall. Slipping into the office she was startled by its uncharacteristic simplicity. Everything in Riverfall was adorned with emphatic detail but here the desk was a solid oak table stretching across one length of the building. Creeping forward tentatively Jaye ran her eyes along the domed wooden and stone roof.

She had never had a job before, in Endrykas she was tasked with small jobs like guarding the herd, hunting, or assisting anyone who needed assistance. Since coming to Riverfall there was little for her to do beyond roam its streets. Slowly her savings had widdled away to practically nothing and reality had slid over her eyes dampening her sight. Father isn't here...family isn't here...if I run out of money...I can't eat...The realization was so shocking and terrifying that she had immediately sought out the patrons of the city for a job and been instructed and directed toward the small and hidden building before her.

She had missed it several times expecting a large building that dominated the skyline and been faintly disappointed and embarrassed when she had asked a faint blue Akalak directly before the building where it was only to be given a weird look and a small hand gesture over his shoulder. "Oh, Thanks..." She had murmured and ducked her blushing cheeks out of sight as she followed the worn stone walkway.

The Akalak was a pale green Akalak smiled faintly at her, a polite glaze frosting his eyes. "Job or Citizenship?" He queried reaching for a pile of papers. "Citizenship?" Jaye echoed. In Endrykas foreigners were never citizens, at least not until they bonded with a Strider. Here all she had to do was fill out a piece of paper and she could be a citizen? How did that encourage loyalty? How did that ascertain their worthiness? They just allowed anyone to be one of them? The thought was ridiculous.

"Yes. Citizenship. You fill out a form and then undergo a weapons test. If you complete it you have status within the city." The man replied green eyes still glazed. He said the same words everyday, answered the same questions Jay imagined. I am a Citizen of Endrykas...Jaye thought, I have no interest in being on of you. "Job." She replied and took the slip of paper handed to her.

Running her fingers over its crisp edges she stared at the unintelligible letters wiggling tauntingly in front of her eyes. "I-I can't read this..." She admitted handing the sheet back to him. Finally, the man looked up at her the hazy cloudiness disappearing. Chuckling he smiled reassuringly, "No problem, I can fill it out for you." He offered drawing a whetted quill.

"Name?"

"Jaye Feathered Fetlock"

"Race?" Jaye hesitated for a moment, everyone knew how the Kelvics were treated in Riverfall. They were pets and servants, she would never get the job she deserved if she said Kelvic, "Drykas." She replied smoothly. It wasn't a lie, she reasoned, I am Drykas.

"Age?"

"15" Jaye replied struggling not to stutter over the next lie. Fortunately the Akalak didn't hesitate in listing off the questions, ignorant of her lies.

"Relevant Skills?"

"Well...I have training in equine leg massage. I was helping out with the horses last season during the festival." Jaye explained. Fortila was away with her eggs leaving Heart dancing in the curls of her braid. Peaking out at the Akalak the fiesty bird let out a shrill trill, threatening the Akalak as he reached out to dip the quill in more ink.

Gasping with surprise the man almost knocked out the small vial in his jerk to retreat. "Oh! What was that?!" His face was slack with alarm.

"That's Heart. I have a couple birds."

Bending down the man kept a wary eye on her hair as he continued to scrawl her reply on the paper.

"You know..." he murmured as he finished the sentence with a small dot, "There are plenty of people experienced with horses but the zoo is in desperate need of an animal care taker for their bird exhibits. Is that something you would be interested in?"

Jayes eyes widened with surprise, she hadn't thought her fascination with birds would ever be useful or desired by an employer. Rapidly nodding her head Jaye grinned with delight. Her love and appreciation of horses was both genetically and culturally bred into her but there as little wonder, mystery or fascination left when all was known. Birds had behaviors and characteristics so keenly different from horses with colours and behaviours so vastly different she couldn't help but wonder at them.

"How long do you plan to stay in RiverFall?" The question threw Jaye, she had never really considered how long she planned to be away from home. As long as Caiyha is here I suppose...Jaye thought to herself though she doubted the answer would appease the Akalak.

"Until my duty here is done..." She replied cryptically, and receiving a puzzled expression in return.

"If they are going to invest time and money into training you...they are going to need an expected time frame..." The man broached carefully.

"I don't see myself leaving any time soon..." She replied very slowly unsure whether this was as much a lie as her former answers.

Adney looked at the building and gave out a huge sigh. He walked to the door and smiled. He opened the door and entered the building. He closed the door behind him and walked to a desk. There was an akalak sitting down signing papers. Adney stopped at the desk and smiled. "um yes I would like to have the citizenship form and the job form please." The man looked at Adney and slid him two forms. Adney sat down to sign the forms.

Preferred employment: Bard/Busker

Calters stared for a long while at the tiny form he had filled out. It didn't seem enough to warrant a job, but apparently that was all he needed. He gave a quick glance to the muscular green Akalak at the desk, but the man was paying him no mind. He was busy helping a woman read a form.

Cal looked back at his paper, staring hard until he thought he might be drawing looks. Didn't they want a sample of his playing style? Or at least the lyrics to his songs? Surely they wouldn't just let him perform in their taverns without checking anything first! There had to be more!

Or maybe I won't get a job at all. Maybe they don't want Akvatari's taking up space in their taverns and this is how they weed them out, He thought miserably. Cal imagined a scene in which his wings knocked over a pint of ale, or his tail got in the way and tripped a gorgeous Konti barmaid. Shaking his head to clear out the negative thoughts, Cal stood up. He worried at the edge of the form for a tick longer before finally approaching the desk. He wobbled extra slow, careful not fall over on his unsteady tail and not to unfurl his wings into anyone.

Cal waited with downcast eyes for the Akalak to finish what he was doing. By the time he reached the desk, he saw the woman move away. Cal put his form on the desk and slid it over with a forced smile.
"Is this good?"

She swept back her white hair, from her pale features, her pale blue hues flickering over the form that had been filled out, it was sitting upon the desk top that she had seated herself at. It was just strange in a way, it just felt like she had maybe done this job form before, perhaps in her previous life? Her mind flickered to other thoughts, such as the man at the desk, quiet as the stars when he did not have to speak to people and when he did, he was professional. Running a soft hand over the form, she felt the paper underneath her fingers and a sigh settled upon her lips, it was such a familiar feeling, but she couldn't pull any memories forth, no matter how hard she tried.

She closed her eyes for a moment. Sometimes when she felt such familiar feelings, she would try to pull a memory from it, with no success. She had felt drawn to the libraries and for as long as she had been in Riverfall, she had especially enjoyed Leth's light, working at a desk in her room, pouring over volumes of books and when she wasn't doing that, she took the time to study the stars above as she bathed in Leth's divine light. Speaking of desks, she was currently seated at one still, with a completed form grasped in between her fingers. Right, she still had to hand it back to the male at the main desk.

Pausing, she took a moment to draw in a deep breath, before exhaling and she moved to stand up from the desk, her pale fingers not letting go of the job application. She couldn't leave it simply sitting upon the desk she had filled it at, it had to be returned to the male, for that was where its place was. She gently tucked the chair under the desk and made her way back to the main desk, her pale fingers gently handing over the form that she had filled out for him. "I hope everything is in order."

[Riverfall] The Citizenship, Housing, and Labor Aid Office

Postby Naredu on July 4th, 2014, 1:31 pm

1st Day of Summer 514 AV

The city of Riverfall was truly a remarkable place – it was an entirely alien landscape to the ocean floor and the city of Charbosi that Naredu was used to. However it was the fact that it was alien, strange and most importantly new that drew Naredu out of the water initially. His parents had encouraged him to go out, to travel and see the world. Naturally they had meant their world, the world of the ocean floor, but Naredu found the pull of the surface world all too strong to ignore. This Charoda wanted to see what they did up there, and whether he could apply practises that they used up there to the skills that he had for the creation of coral based designs. It wasn’t just the lure of knowing how the surface dwellers lived that pulled him though, Naredu had seen how Caiyah had spread her designs beneath the crashing waves of the ocean and he wanted to see how her designs were put into creation above the water. He couldn’t do this for free though, he had to live, and while he had acquired an apartment that was suited for the aquatic races in the city, he needed to be able to pay his way, which meant that he needed to gain employment.

Venturing out of his apartment like he did every day either to explore the sea floor, or to venture into the city, Naredu climbed up into the city proper. He did not know what to expect from the surface dwellers in terms of work. Had he remained in Charbosi he would likely have remained with his parents learning to grow the and harvest the aquaflora that his kind lived on, or he would have ventured further into the city and preferably joined those that grew the coral into great structures that in his opinion were far grander than anything that the surface dwellers could make, for they were natural and grown into existence rather than broken and rebuilt.

Eventually he found his way to The Citizenship, Housing and Labour Aid Office, standing out of the front of it for several minutes; Naredu’s eyes wandered over the architecture of the building and examined how every little piece of the building had been put together by the surface dwellers. Hopefully it was something that one day he would be able to replicate, or pay homage too in his own designs, he didn’t want to copy them entirely, and he wanted to fuse the beauty and natural state of the Charoda architecture with the variety and skills used by the surface dwellers. Well one day, dreaming was free after all.

Once Naredu had seen enough of the architecture from the outside, he pushed open the door of the office and stepped inside. Moving on the surface had taken some getting used to for the Charoda, without the resistance of the water slowing him down, he found that his limbs and body were able to move with a speed that he wasn’t used to. It had taken him some time to adapt and remove the clumsiness that came with moving faster unexpectedly.

”Hello. I am looking for job.” Naredu spoke as he approached the Akalak clerk who was sat behind the desk. As the Clerk talked Naredu through the form he listened intently making sure that he understood everything that was told to him, before he took the form. ”Many thanks.” A smile tugged at Naredu’s lips, revealing the rows of pointy teeth which Naredu quickly covered with his hand; hopefully they would not take the baring of sharp teeth as an offense. Quickly Naredu went to the desk and filled in the form and handed it in, hoping they would have some opportunities that he would be good at.

[Riverfall] The Citizenship, Housing, and Labor Aid Office

Postby Zira Nyneve on July 10th, 2014, 4:33 pm

40th Day of Summer in 514 AV

The stone building that housed the Riverfell Citizenship Housing and Labor Air Office laid its shadow softly across the well-trimmed lawn. A number of somewhat confused individuals, all different races, filtered in and out of the building, most with the heavy grip of sleep still in their eyes. A few Akalaks drifted in and out of the building, but, mostly, it was just the outsiders. Zira herself stood a few feet away from the beginning of the path, staring up at the three-story building. She was not entirely use to the stone structure of the buildings here, and still partially expected each building she approached to be made out of the gentle coral of her home. Everything here was so… stagnant… dead. It was nothing like the living, growing coral that made up Charbosi.

A tall, Akalak strayed too close to Zira as he made his way down the street, softly bumping into her as he did so. He whispered a soft apology, which Zira returned, and continued down the street unfazed. Zira, herself, was still not use to the tall, muscular build of the blue race, however, and felt her heart skip a beat every time one of the males appeared beside her without her noticing.

As Zira walked down the path and placed her hand gently on the large, wooden door, she was surprised by how tall and, above all, heavy it was. Clearly it was not made for those of her build. With quite a bit of effort, she managed to push the door open just enough so that she could squeeze inside. The area she walking into was decently simplistic. A bulletin board sat on one side, coated with a number of colorful parchments and surrounded by more than a couple figures, each carefully reading and fingering through each poster. Zira carefully squeezed around the individuals and made her way deeper into the stone threshold towards the large, wooden desk that took up most of the space.

Zira had never truly had a job before. At home, she was mostly tasked with helping out around the house and gathering food. However, she was incredibly low on funds, most of which were spent just getting here, and was in desperate need of anything that would gain her money. Truthfully, she hoped she would be able to find employment in something to do with plants or the sea, but really, at this point, she would take anything she could get. She was just here to find a way to get the Mura; she could live with a less than tasteful job for a while.

Quietly, she slipped into the area next to the desk and paused, waiting patiently for the Akalak positioned behind it, who was busy studying some sort of paper, to give her some direction or at least awkwardly acknowledge her existence. After a few moments, the Akalak set down whatever he had been looking at and turned his attention to Zira: “Job or Citizenship?” Probably a little too quickly Zira proclaimed “Job… I’m looking for a job”. She awkwardly placed her hand on the desk as the Akalak shuffled through a pile of paper before quietly sliding a piece of paper towards Zira, a seemingly trained smile upon his face. “Please fill this out”.

Taking the paper as it was handed to her, Zira gave a nod, before realizing silently that she did not have a way to fill it out. She didn’t own a pen and hadn’t thought that she might need one. After standing their awkwardly for a second, staring silently at the paper, the Akalak tilted his head towards the left, trained smile still on his face. “Oh”, Zira said, practically releasing the awkward atmosphere that had built up.

Quickly, she moved to the spot the male had referred to. Taking a pen in hand, she slowly went down the form. The questions were easy, self-explanatory. She only found that she needed to think on a few, and even then not for very long. She shuffled tentatively back to the desk clerk, sliding her form back across the desk. Once again lighting his face up with a trained smile, he retrieved the form.
