Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

It had been an eventful winter, one Finian couldn't decide had gone by too fast or had lasted too long. Perhaps it was a strange paradox of both. It hadn't been a profitable season, however, though the blond shipwright had enjoyed his experiences despite the lack of Mizas in his pockets. Such was the will of Laviku, who'd still provided plenty to eat, enjoyable companionship, and satisfying work.

The young Svefra had no complaints.

When the seasons began to change and his repairs had been completed, he'd felt the shift in the tides and the tug to move on. It wasn't entirely an easy decision, but Ian had enough trouble sitting still, let alone commitment to anything other than his craft. Perhaps one day he could be persuaded otherwise, perhaps in some other season things would change. The Suvan called again and he answered. Despite his restlessness, his curiosity had been peaked and he found himself pointing his casinor in the direction of Riverfall, if only because of his over-wintering companion's fascination with it. Whether or not she'd meet him there or not was something he decided to leave to chance.

The dried fish from his winter stay somehow managed to last his journey southwest, and by the time the tall cliffs with the city of Riverfall itself carved into its rocky sides came into view, he knew that he'd have to find work or friendship sooner rather than later for this new season to be as enjoyable as the last. As the roar of the waterfall that spilled the Bluevein River into the Suvan began to fill the air and the mist of it's forceful downfall crept over the waves, Ian briefly wondered if he'd truly made the best choice.

A few other small ships, mostly fishing vessels and a few other casinor filled the bay, and at least one or two impressively large merchant ships hulked their way through the mist. For several chimes, however, the blond Svefra let his own sails luff uselessly in the wind, leaning against his tiller while taking in the sights. His doubt melted into the salty fog as his lagoon blue eyes took in just the hints of the city sights, fascinated. Just as he found himself lost in his thoughts, however, some other fisherman was shouting at him to get out of the way and he was forced to put his ship back into motion. Tugging at the mains'l line and ducking his boom as he tilted his ship back into the wind, Finian began the slow, slightly dangerous crawl to the docks, dodging the crowd of other small ships as well as the rocky jetties that stuck up from the bay like teeth from the open maw of the Bluevein high above.

He passed the remains of ships who had not been so fortunate as himself, bumped a few fishermen out of the way with some half-hearted apologies, and barely kept himself from tangling with a merchant vessel. By the time the shipwright found a suitable spot on the Docks and moored his home, he was both hungry and eager to see more of the city than it's aggravating bay.

Scraping together the last of his Mizas and slinging his rucksack over his shoulder. Ian realized he was forgetting one thing: his tavan. With an impatient whistle, he called out for the young otter, who took his sweet time clambering over the deck and rolling into the shipwright's calloused hands. Scooping the little albino thing up and onto his shoulder, he slid from the deck of his casinor to the wet docks and steeled himself for a round of questioning from whatever blue manbeast he would be encountering before being granted any entrance to Riverfall proper.

No, he wasn't just visiting. Yes, he'd be interested in employment. Shipwrighting. Carpentry. Mindless dock work. Loading, unloading. Anything would do. Yes, he agreed to the laws, in principle of course ... in practice, well, he'd have to see about that. Yes, he'd happily return the scroll on his way out; it wasn't like he was going to read it all anyway. (No, he didn't say that out loud.) He didn't have much for the Dockmaster, and winced as he hefted over his last gold Miza. He wasn't sure how long he'd be staying, so he simply put down what he thought would be fair for quite some time. His casinor didn't take up much room anyway, right?

Well. Now he'd have to find some work for sure. Perhaps he'd come back to the Dockmaster later, after a meal and a look-see.

And with that, Finian had arrived at the first city he'd ever visited (back when he was just a sea squirt of a Svefra), and the first city he'd bothered to visit in at least a year or so.

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Ysgraam Halverran on April 1st, 2014, 6:57 am

28th of Spring, 514AV

It was a spring morning when Ysgraam awoke in the middle of a field. He knew he never should have tried to travel away from his home in Riverfall. The rain from above was cold, and it stung at his face as he lay there amid the grass. With his eyes now open, he gazed up towards the dark, looming cloud above. With a sigh, he sat himself upright. He knew the trip home would be long, however, he did not expect it to take such a toll on him. Perhaps it was his aging body giving up, or his will lessening. Nevertheless, it troubled him so, how his perseverance had broken and how he had forced himself to sleep for the night in a nice field. A new day, though, it was, and with every new day came its joys, and he smiled at that notion. He stood with a little difficulty, dusting himself off as he rose, and gave a quick stretch to his aging legs. Now mildly awake and partially alert, he gave a quick check to his surroundings. To his left was the Kabrin Road, the path that would guide him to his destination. After doing a check for all his items, he restarted his journey. As he walked down the road, he found his mind taking a journey of its own, into the inner sanctum that was his thoughts. When he returned, would he remain silent, as was usual of him, or would he attempt to reach out to the populace and possibly serve as a mentor to someone? What would he do if the guards demand he speak? He'd lived in Riverfall nearly all of his life, and yet, all these things troubled him so. Being an introvert never really helped his case, in a societal sense. He carried on down the road, pondering on various mind-boggling subjects or other items of interest, until he reached a road branching off to the west. Heading down it, he could see the face of the city; a simply intimidating sight it was, what with its high walls. Eventually, he made it to the gate, and before him were two guards. He'd heard the same spiel before, and he took the scroll the guards give everyone upon entering the city

After reviewing the items yet again and ensuring he had a full understanding of the laws, he simply rolled it back up, and gave the guards a reassuring nod, indicating he agreed to the rules. Tucking the scroll in one of his pockets, he entered the city.

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Fay on April 2nd, 2014, 12:04 am

12th of Spring, 594 AV-

It was noon when the Ethaefal went to the gates, still half-soaked. She took occasional looks at the sun, some glances with bitterness, and eventually she reached the gates. The glances of the Akalaks guarding the gates only annoyed her right now, though typically she'd understand why they were staring it her. She glared back at them, and one guard just sighed and went up to her, and said, "Welcome, traveller. Here is a scroll of welcome from the city. It contains a list of our laws, map of the city, and some advertisements from local businesses that helped sponsor these scrolls to be made. You can feel free to come in if you agree to our laws and turn this scroll back in so we can reuse it." Frankly, she mostly ignored what was said, catching mostly "welcome and read this and then you can enter". She took a brief glance at the laws. Easy. She nodded, with a hint of annoyance in her eyes as the other Akalak stared at her. She took the scroll and walked in, hearing the faint words of one of the Akalak at the back.

"Was she-" She tried to ignore their talking, walking closer inside the city, checking the scroll briefly again, trying to ignore the amount of people staring at her.

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Zander Guile on April 7th, 2014, 3:27 am

7th of Spring 514 A.V.

Zander had been on a boat for the better part of, if not the entire of the Last season and was just about bursting at the seams to get out and explore the city of Riverfall. Although he was wary that his slight tendency to make a little trouble every now and again would likely end up with his getting expelled from the city, not something he wanted to end up doing. Getting expelled would defeat his purpose for setting out for Riverfall in the first place, which was to find a worthy opponent or some work.

As the boat pulled into the docks, Zander departed and made his way to the gates of the city, which was heavily guarded by Akalak warriors, as he approached one of the guards looked over at him. Zander took this as a non-verbal cue to walk over to him, so he obliged. Upon walking over, the Akalak began speaking and passed Zander a scroll "Welcome, traveller. Here is a scroll of welcome from the city. It contains a list of our laws, map of the city, and some advertisements from local businesses that helped sponsor these scrolls to be made. You can feel free to come in if you agree to our laws and turn this scroll back in so we can reuse it." Zander accepted the scroll and listened intently to the Akalak.

After the Akalak finished, Zander said "Thank you." Then made his way into the city, eager to find himself a worthy opponent.

2nd of Spring, 514 AV

The sun was just starting to rise up and fill the sky with golden hued light when Riverfall came into view from a small Svefra Casinor. Ren was standing still and quiet on the desk of her ship, lightly holding onto the lines of the boat as she looked out into the bay and her blue eyes took in all the beauty of the city. This truly was a beautiful city and even though she had passed through once or twice before in her life time, it still made her pause to watch as it came into view, especially with the new light of dawn illuminating the bay the way it was now.

So far the weather seemed fair today, no hint of rain or snow, which was greatly appreciated as Ren was not very well suited to dealing with the cold, she could cope, but it made her miserable. Her eyes finally moved to the deck of her Casinor as she began the mental checklist of things she needed to prepare before she reached the dock. She secured the rigging and began going through the motions, putting certain things away as well as putting the rest of her clothes on. (She had taken to sailing in fair weather in not but a skirt or pair of pants and perhaps some cloth tied around her chest as some makeshift undergarment.)

Slowly the Casinor made its way into the bay, maneuvering easily around the larger ships that were already docked, and the small fisherman's boats that were heading back in from being out fishing in the early morning hours as the sun slowly made the sky lighter and the day more prominent. Once she was on a steady course to an empty space on the dock she turned her gaze to the waterfall where the Bluevein met the Suvan and watched it for a moment. Once she felt the boat lightly bump into the dock and stop she threw a rope out onto one of the poles and tied herself off before slipping out of the boat and looking around.

Before long a large Akalak man approached her with a scroll in one hand and a smile on his face. ”Hello there, can I help you with anything? Here is a scroll of welcome from the city. It contains a list of our laws, a map of the city, and some advertisements from local businesses that sponsor these scrolls to be made. You can feel free to come in if you agree to our laws and turn this scroll back in when you leave so we can reuse it." Ren took the scroll and glanced over it for a minute before slipping it into her backpack as she slung it over her shoulder. "I'll follow the rules and before to turn the scroll back in before I leave, no worries." She replied with a smile, the action tugging at one corner of her mouth and reaching her eyes. Once she had had another look around the dock and inspected a few of the other people at the docks she made her way to find the Dockmaster and maybe see if any other Svefra were in town.

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Natsu Nendo on April 25th, 2014, 7:34 pm

13th Day of Spring, 514 A.V.

The small clay winged mouse darted in and out of the brush alongside the road which led to the gate of Riverfall, his ears perking as he approached. Avoiding the clumsy footfalls of other travelers, Natsu Nendo made his was up onto the shoulder of one of the guards, giving a small bow "
I have been here many times before, and I am too small to carry the scroll. I will gladly partake in re-reading and agreeing to the laws, but perhaps you have a smaller bit of parchment or other token I may hold onto?" His voice was soft and gentle, knowing that these guards were one of the few whose authority he respected. The guard nodded slowly, laying the one of the scrolls in a nearby ledge and allowing the Pycon to slide down his arm. Natsu ran over every line carefully, checking to make sure nothing had changed before he nodded sharply "I agree to these terms" he said with a smile up at the guard. "Thank you" the guard replied, handing the creature a small token with a scroll enscribed onto it. Natsu Nendo took it gratefully, placing it safely into the bag which he carried with him. The guard returned to his duties and the winged mouse ran along the wall, thinking to himself 'Perhaps today I will find a traveler in need of a companion. If not, I can always prank the newcomers' he greeted the last thought with a smile, coming to a stop at the edge of the wall and glancing around, excitement flowing through his being.
I wish to see the world, yes that much is true. It is also true that one such as myself will have a much better view on the shoulder of a close friend

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Hirem on May 14th, 2014, 8:58 pm

63rd of Spring, 514 AV

The ferry ride across the Blue Vein river was the singular most terrifying event of Hirem's life.

He had journeyed across the desert a thousand times before and had seen the depravities that the brutal terrain inflicted upon its denizens. He had witnessed men die of starvation, of thirst, of terrible and wasting illness. He had ventured into Hai and watched as twisted lepers crawled through the dark, stripping each other of flesh, waiting for a chance to strike at him. He had seen a child, once homely and miserable, transform into a crazed nightmare of flesh, muscle, bone, and pounce upon him. Earlier this season, he had nearly died trying to wrestle with a frenzied tsana after being caught alone in the worst storm of his life.

But all of that paled in comparison to stepping onto a boat for the first time. When Hirem placed his foot upon the barge and felt the footing underneath rock with the river current, he had felt the urge to retch. "Yahal!" He had gasped, his voice pleading, greatly amusing his traveling companions. "Grant me the good fortune to see the far shore safely!" It only got worse when the ferry actually began to be winched across the Blue Vein, leaving stable ground entirely and stranding Hirem in the middle of the rushing river.

The other caravan members had no difficulty with the journey. Hisham had informed him that their group, comprised mostly of Benshirans with a few Eypharian traders sprinkling the mix, made the trip to Riverfall often during the warmer seasons, and could recite the twists in the Kabrin Road in their sleep. It was thanks to their help that Hirem had made it this far in Cyphrus, so awestruck was he by the immense green that filled the horizon. Without their confident assurances that they would survive the boat ride across the Blue Vein, and not, in fact, end up falling overboard, the estranged desert wanderer would have never stepped foot onto the ferry. Yahal himself could not have convinced the Benshiran to trust the boat.

But once he was able to adjust to the boat's rocking, he did not feel nearly as disoriented as he did before. Talking to Nadia and Hisham did a great deal to settle his disquieted stomach. The trip might have even become tolerable, had Adan not mentioned, mid-river, that the Blue Vein was currently funneling them towards a three thousand foot drop into the Suvan Sea.

Yahal, you can be merciless with your tests.

As it was, it was a miracle Hirem was able to fall onto his knees at the far shore, rather than just collapse face-first into the dirt. Crawling towards the Blue Vein with shaking hands, the Benshiran emptied his stomach into the rushing waters, and then voided it again, and then - miraculously - managed to retch a third time. By the time that he was finished, his throat was on fire and his whole body felt pathetically drained of energy. He had to be helped to his feet by the swiftly-apologizing Adan, who nevertheless grinned at his comrade's misfortune. "Faith, good Hirem, faith... as you have often said, it will carry us through any trial."

"Yes, carry us..." he groaned. "Men were not made to float."

Following the caravan to the city gates, Hirem managed to shelve his discomfort and replace it with awe, staring with wonder at the walls of Riverfall, at the sheer beauty of this intact city, and at the armed guards that patrolled its outskirts. Who could guess that there would be such a thing as blue-skinned warriors in the world? Whichever god created them must be fanciful, indeed. He couldn't help but feel overwhelmed at the sheer size of the settlement, but Hisham was quick to reassure him. "Your very first stop should be the Labor Aid Office, just at the end of the main road - they'll get you settled."

As they approached the gates, Hirem realized that the guards were addressing each traveler individually - in Common, no less! ”Hello there," they were saying,"can I help you with anything? Here is a scroll of welcome from the city. It contains a list of our laws, a map of the city, and some advertisements from local businesses that sponsor these scrolls to be made. You can feel free to come in if you agree to our laws and turn this scroll back in when you leave so we can reuse it."

Feeling that his grasp on the language was rusty, the Benshiran nevertheless attempted to respond. "No help needed." Hirem nodded, gratefully taking the scroll from the Akalak warrior. "I agree to these laws. Thank you for the welcome, and may Yahal's blessing guid your steps."

And then, just like that, Hirem was cleared of the gates and now standing within the strangest city he had ever seen before in his life.

Hisham called out to him. The caravan moved fluidly into the city, in one practiced maneuver; they did not stand around gawking, as Hirem did. "We are heading to the Zhongjie Warren, my friend! So, for now, this is farewell. Mahim!"

Bowing, Hirem responded in kind. "Mahim, and av-berkaven! Safe travels!"

Now... where I can find housing?

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Alyra on May 31st, 2014, 4:46 am

Image
89th of Spring, 514 AV

Alyra hummed as the ferry clanked ahead. She leaned over the side of the boat, her eyes evaluating the city that sat before her. She would soon be inside Riverfall, the great city of the Akalak. The woman was eager to learn about the warrior people; she had never spoke to one before. In fact, the only exposure she had ever had to her new comrades was the one Akalak that ran a market stall back in Zeltiva. Unfortunately, Alyra had no use for wine, so she had never shopped at his stall before. Now, however, she would have a chance to amend that mistake.

As the ferry began to slow to a stop, Alyra reached around and gently prodded Nash. The tiny cat had sprawled out on Alyra's back as soon as she let him out of her bag, and Alyra was sure he wouldn't be too keen on getting back in the bag. It had to be done, though. Nash had been her only steady companion since she'd fallen, and she wasn't going to have him wandering off before they got into the city. After a few meows of frustration, Nash had been wrestled back into the bag.

"Almost there, friend. Almost there." Alyra cooed at the cat, patting the bag as reassurance while she exited the ferry. She nodded her head in thanks before quickly scurrying up the pathway.

When she reached the gates, a scroll was given to her to read. She read through it quickly, wincing at one of the rules: all Kuvan or above must be competent in at least one weapon or martial arts style and is required to be available at any time for the defense of Riverfall. She had no capacity for combat, nor did she have an interest in it. Given this, some would probably laugh at her choice of home. Alyra desperately wanted to live in Riverfall. The rich culture, the beauty, the knowledge that could be attained...Riverfall was perfect for her. If living in her dream city meant learning how to fight, then so be it.

The Akalak at the gate raised a cautious eyebrow.
"Is there a problem, miss?"

"Not at all, no! Sorry, I accept! I accept." Alyra stuttered awkwardly. She waved her hands and smiled apologetically, then gave a quick curtsey before entering the city. After taking a few steps into the city, Alyra stopped at the side of the walkway. She unfolded her map and gazed down at it, waiting for something on the page to jump out and lead her to her first lesson.

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Briza on July 3rd, 2014, 4:05 am

1st of Summer, 514AV

Tired eyes gazed at the ferries docking point. She'd never been a fan of water, then again, she'd never been a fan of land. It had been a long and treacherous journey to reach the gates of this place called Riverfall. It had not been her intended destination, but she'd never really had one. Just the want to escape from the mountains, and leave her shame behind.

The ferry waited, and she knew she should not delay, so picking up her meagre belongings, and tightening her horses reigns around her hand, she approched the ferry.
Her horse shied at the sight of the water, but continued onto the groaning planks, snorting in fear at the unsure footing. "It's ok, boy, she'll be right," Briza whispered into his ear, rubbing his whithers in an attempt to calm his nerves.

With a groan the ferry shifted off from the bank and began to slide slowly across the water.

With a breath of relief, Briza and her equine companion stepped off onto solid ground. She counted her blessings that she'd survived that little adventure. If it had of sunk, her chances of survival were minimal. She'd never had to swim before.

Before her stood intimidating figures, people that she had previously learnt were called Akalak. The kind of people one did not intentionally get on the wrong side of.
One turned to her, and in his hand was a scroll of parchment. Briza lifted her eyebrows and waiting to see if he would say anything.
"Welcome, traveler. Here is a scroll of welcome from the city. It contains a list of our laws, a map of the city, and some advertisements from local businesses that sponsor these scrolls to be made. You can feel free to come in if you agree to our laws and turn this scroll back in when you leave so we can reuse it" he stated to her, pressing the scroll into her hands. She grinned broadly at him, and recieved a scowl in return.
"Cheers! I'll be sure to be on my best behaviour," her eyes glittered with amusement as she tucked the scroll into her pack, after perusing it breifly, and marched herself and her companion into the formiddable city, making a line for the stables.

[Riverfall] The Land and Sea Gates

Postby Tyne Brightcrest on July 5th, 2014, 12:27 pm

Splendor's Captain's Log: 3rd, Summer, 514 A.V.

Tyne leant against Splendor's bulwark with his wooden flute to his lips. A bare foot casually pressed against the smooth wood of the tiller. He had been maintaining a bearing toward the port since it had climbed out of the horizon. But he was more concerned with his flute. He was regretting slipping the instrument out of the Kenashian boy's hand, for he knew not a fleeting idea how to play the thing. The sun baked Svefra glanced back at the city, now much closer than only ten chimes earlier. He stood and dropped the flute onto the smooth deck boards of Splendor.

Tyne loosened the boom line and made an adjustment. The boom shifted to lean to port and the yellowing sail billowed in the wind again for a moment before catching it. Tyne smiled through his beard. Riverfall had perhaps the most beautiful port the Svefra had ever seen. It would be nice to make port there, even if it was only for a while. Though Splednor would always be home, Tyne had the benefit of being able to move it to different scenery, and the city of the Akalaks was some truly awe inspiring scenery.

Tyne sat casually on the aft bulwark and rested his weight on the tiller once again. He would pay the price for a decent tie-down. A Casinor took up not enough space to justify swindling a man of more than a few silver pieces. And Riverfall was worth it, Tyne thought as his bright, stormy eyes followed the pillar of water up to the waterfall head. The river so far above was what gave the world famous city it's name. Tyne waited until he was out of the rough sea air and into the calmer port atmosphere before running through and readying his cables for cast. He had been sailing for his entire life, as was the proper place for all honest Svefra. But no sailor was salt enough to never make mistakes. When it came to the fate of his beloved Splendor, Tyne was always careful.

The sleek Casinor slid up between two humble fishing vessels and Tyne caught a bit of open dock. The sailor leant against his tiller, Splendor leant Starboard. In a practiced move Tyne straightened her out and jumped into action. He grasped one of the readied cables and chucked it. The end of the thick rope landed on the dock. He moved along the deck to the prow of his ship. Grabbing the other cable in hand, the Svefra leapt across the feet of open water and landed on the dock.

He braced the rope against his back as he pulled his ship in close to the dock. Tyne quickly tied a bowline at the end of the rope and slipped it over one of the many posts on the dock. As one of Riverfalls dock masters, a tall, thick Akalak, approached he tied off the abaft line as well.

"Fair winds bucko. What's the weight on it then?" Tyne asked the native as he fished in his trousers for a few mizas. His common was lacking and his accent was very thick. The man had grown up on Fratava. The Akalak seemed a nice enough sort, professional and courteous as he stated the price. But he was definitely an authority and exercise that authority with force if need be. Though Tyne carried a cutlass on his hip, he was surely no match for the night-skinned warrior.

"Good day. The price will be five silver mizas." A smile flashed across the face, if nothing else a reward for politeness. The Akalak handed him a scroll saying that it contained a map of the city and a list of the laws in common. Tyne opened it and glanced at the Akalak. He was staring expectantly at Tyne.

"Clear your mind, I shan't stray from the law." In front of you.

As the Akalak nodded and left, Tyne consulted the map for a good tavern. He hopped onto his deck and began to stow everything away, ready for a drink.
