So, to all squires and unranked knights! Train your skills, do the knighting quest, get competent leadership, request for promotion, then you can have your own awesome Wing Squad NPCs!

Can you be in a wing squad as a player? For a player?

There are two ways to answer your question, Xira.

1. If you are a Knight, then you are automatically assigned to a Wing with a (named/unnamed) Sergeant Knight NPC.

2. If you want to be in a wing with a PC Sergeant, in this case, Markus, then you have to ask him.

I can't wait until I can become a Sergeant Knight, the idea of a tiny little Pycon commanding a group of large burly knights amuses me greatly.

Or, Nivel can command her own squad of Pycons! Mighty Morphin Pyken Rangers!

awww that would be adorable but there needs to be a least one poor little human giant that I can boss around

... Thanks the gods that Markus made sergeant before either Ball or Nivel. He would not be able to handle being bossed around by a puddle of clay.
