He was honestly surprised. He shouldn't have been - those three years were not for nothing after all. He'd spent more than a few bells and chimes practicing with others, and he knew that he wasn't the only one that trained to try and raise his skill for the days that he would need it. Nevertheless, the counter-defense was much stronger than he'd anticipated, and because of that, he floundered. The metal tip of his spear struck cold dirt, while his hands struggled to keep a firm grip on the shaft. Vibrations sent the thing into a jig that he struggled to just keep up with, never mind stop.

When the next attack struck, though, at least he was able to put the rest of the spear to good use. The shaft was pulled up - although the tip remained almost buried in the dust - to catch the blade of the gladius, leaving behind a small dent and a fresh wave of vibrations that sent the whole spear wobbling in his hands. It was times like these that he wished he'd focused on a smaller, sturdier weapon. Some of them seemed like they were about to break on their own any second, and others just wobbled about everywhere as if they had a mind of their own. His spear certainly did. He tried to counter-attack, like Daku, but as the shaft of the spear was thrust forwards to try and brunt an attack on the mans skull, the wood creaked and it seemed to spin hither and thither, even after the tip had freed itself after so much movement.

In fact, he had to hold back a yelp as he struggled to stop the thing from smacking his own forehead. He may have had several bells of prior training but when it came down to fighting with such a fast and experienced warrior, h felt like he was back in the first days of his three-year service. Being beaten to a pulp by his 'trainer'.

Kwantu's opponent seemed to change then. Merely chimes before he had been shirking the superiority of women, teasing his sister, but now his dark eyes were focused, his lips twitched slightly, a classic symbol of enjoying a fight as he prepared for whatever Kwantu might throw at him.

His strike was caught on the shaft of the spear, and the warrior nodded, retreating a step and holding his weight on his rear foot, watching as the Sunken Scar aimed the blunt of the head directly for his skull. He twisted, just enough so that it didn't jar his skull, but it grazed his temple and caught the warrior on his collar bone, sending a dull pain through his neck and chest.

Daku grunted and hopped backward, giving Kwantu enough time to re-arrange his spear if he wished before dashing forward. He aimed a horizontal cut for Kwantu's neck, but at the last instant twisted and brought the blade down instead for a hilt first punch to his gut.

It hadn't been very long since he'd had a good, fast spar. Barely a few days at most. But a few days were a few days - and every one of them had left him feeling less and less like he really needed to fight. More like he could spend time away from the shouting fang leaders, back with his family, and his clan. For once, people he didn't have to compete against. Not much, anyway. Returning to such a fast, brutal battle - well, he just didn't have it all in him yet. Not to mention that back in the days of mandatory service, he'd been lucky to have at least some practice with a weapon. Most of the others barely had any, if they did at all. And he had the advantage.

Not here. Not when his opponent was just so damn fast. It brought a smile to his lips when he finally felt the familiar jolt of wood against flesh - a strike, even if it wasn't very powerful. It meant that he had the upper hand now. He could make another attack, and so he did. He didn't even bother pulling back to rearrange himself - the spear was brought back, the tip aimed for his opponent, and then he struck again, aiming for the center of the chest but keeping the spear light in his hands. He didn't want to end up accidentally impaling someone during their first days of training. Now that would be one for the worst possible things to do - barring actually impaling the fang leader.

Except, as soon as he pushed off, he knew that he'd made a mistake, because he could already tell that Daku wasn't going to be in range. The other warrior was hopping away, and then returning again with an inevitable strike to hit his neck. He wouldn't have time to use his sword to fend it off. So, he swung the full length of the spear horizontally in an attempt to drive off Daku, and hopefully throw his attack off-course. While ducking, just as a natural reflex for when someone wanted to punch a hole in the middle of your windpipe. "Jeez.." All of his confidence drained slowly out of his body, like the sweat was just pulling it through his skin, one droplet at a time. He could tell he was going to lose this. Probably badly. It was lucky that he'd even managed a single hit, even if he'd started out strongly. Not that he'd try and show that. Not with those eyes watching like a hawk, swooping around the battlefield in the corners of his vision.

Daku felt wet droplets dripping down the back of his neck. The yard was directly in Syna's light, no nearby trees or buildings tall enough for any shade, so the full force fo Falyndar's heat beat down upon all the training warriors in the yards that day. He could see Kwantu tiring, just as he inevitably was, and hopped from one foot to the other, twisting his gladius around his wrist, stretching soring muscles.

"Come on Sunken Scar, don't make this easy for me."

He grinned broadly hoping the other male would take him on the challenge he had thrown, then stepped up close to Kwantu, this time using his fists instead of the sword and aiming a punch for the Sunken Scar's jaw. Regardless of whether Kwantu let the blow hit Daku's mouth got up close to Kwantu's ear to whisper.

"She's one group away from us, if you want to prove yourself nows the time."

Vigor leaked from his muscles just as fast as sweat. He could tell that it wasn't only him - not from the sight, but the smell of the bodies around him. The bitter dust of midday was now tinged with the odor of men - and women - at a hard day of work. The dust itself, floating about in thick clouds, made his eyes water. But even through it all, he bristled sharply at the teasing tone of his current sparring partner. If that man thought he would ever get away after saying something like that, he was sorely mistaken. And he'd be even sorer when Kwantu was done with his body! He'd be full of more bruises than he'd be able to count alone! Bruises were temporary scars, after all. "Oh, the warm-ups are finished now." A bright grin soon returned Daku's, and his eyes gleamed fresh. "What, don't tell me you were actually trying for that. I've seen children, suckling at their mothers, that could hold a gladius better." Let's see how he liked that insult. He might have been taking it a little too far but the adrenaline was taking its toll on his mind.

As Daku drew close, Kwantu took a quick step forwards as well until the two could almost touch noses. Inadvertently, it caught the other Myrian's punch mid-swing on his shoulder instead, and the fresh sting jolting down his bicep woke him with a burst of pain lancing down to his fingers; tightening them around the spear as he forcefully pushed the side against the mans chest, to gain some space. "Guess you'd better start trying harder then!" With Daku's ear so close, he was tempted to take a bite on it and see if it provoked him. He could do with a little bit more enthusiasm!

Reiki paced warily, the only being in the yard not dripping with sweat, though there was a sheen to her skin that simply couldn't be avoided at such temperatures. As she walked, those sparring made way for her, making sure to barely kick dust in her direction lest it draw her attention the wrong way.

She watched two females, one with a double bladed dagger, the other with a short spear sparring swiftly with each other. Unlike a taskmaster the Fang Leader did not yell out insults, reprimands or even advice, only watched with obsidian eyes as her feet moved slowly through the crowded yard. When impressed she would step forward, placing two fingers on the shoulder of a fighter, make eye contact with the individual, and give a single nod before continuing on.

Now her feet splayed shoulder width apart she watched Daku and Kwantu.

The spear knocked the Slitted Throat to the side, and the male grunted with the blunt force of the weapon, turning with the blow and rotating back to swipe horizontally at Kwantu's chest with his Gladius, one foot pressed slightly backwards in preparation of a return attack. Now was their moment, and he didn't want to look like a fool in front of his potential future Fang Leader.

There were few times that he felt that he wanted something to never end. Where he felt so at home.. so content, that it seemed an affront to stop. And this was one of those times. He wished the fighting could go on forever.. that they would never have to stop, they'd never have to end this lovely little dance of death that wasn't really death. Maybe it was the reason he wanted to join the army - that and, well, what else was he to do? He knew how to wield a few weapons and he knew how to use his hands as weapons too. Little else. What was he to do, become a merchant? With what? No no, there would only ever be one path for him. He would be a warrior, and he knew that he'd enjoy every second of it. Like now. Only death would stop his fun..

And he wouldn't be dying today, no way! Out of the corner of his watering eyes, he could barely see the figure of his new Fang Leader, and tried not to keep his back facing her.. but it was difficult to find a new position with a gladius repeatedly swung for his chest and face. Anyone would have found it difficult - and he had a little harder time than others, throwing his spear before his body for a second time for it to try and catch the blade.. except the swipe was horizontal, and the spear was still angled horizontally too. The tip damn near caught his stomach and ripped it open - almost. He was lucky, and it didn't look good. Not in his eyes, let alone that of another that was supposed to be testing their worth. Or rather, just measuring it. "That the best you got?" He wanted to look strong, powerful.. but the two of them had been going for a while now as it was. He could see the clear sheen of sweat dribbling off Daku's back as much as he could feel it down his own.

Nevertheless, he swung the tip of his spear around again, for the upteenth time to try and get a decent hit on the side of the mans head, while taking a quick step forwards to make sure that he made full use of the extravagant range of the long spear that a gladius simply couldn't contend with. His grip on the end made the entire thing wobbly, and took a fair bit of accuracy from his swing, but with an extra arm of length behind it, he wasn't complaining about it. "Come on, come and get me!"

Both warriors were tiring, heat and exhaustion pulling at sore muscles bit by bit until weapons grew heavy in hands and slipped on sweat soaked palms. Kwantu's spear slid off kilter, but powerfully through the air and managed to catch Daku directy on the side of his face, the male unable to dodge in time.

His opponent was stunned and took a half pace backwards, eyes shut in pain as the full power of the blow settled into his system. Reiki stood like a shadow on the sidelines, but as Kwantu screamed at his opponent the faintest twitch of her lips could be visible to those who were watching.

The female stepped forward and placed two fingers on Kwantu's shoulder, giving a nod, stepping forward to Daku and doing the same before continuing on into the throngs of fighters.

Half a bell later a piercing whistle carried across the training yards stopping the sweating Myrians in their tracks as Reiki took position once more at the head of the warriors, her voice ringing clearly over everyone's heads.

"I have seen much, and those of you that will be coming with me know who you are. Everyone who was not chosen, you will return in one bell and find yourself another fang leader who will do much the same as I have now, take a break, get water, you have a long day ahead of you. Those I have chosen, follow me."

The woman stepped off the small platform and began weaving herself through the crowds back into the shaded ramps and wooden walkways that led through the military complex. Daku punched Kwantu's shoulder with a grin.

"Nice work, Sunken Scar, that'll save us sweating under Syna all day, aye?" He smiled and turned following their new fang leader and watching the others that had been chosen, 7 in total besides them.

OOCWe'll wrap this up shortly and you can describe a few folks in your new fang if you'd like or leave it up in the air to fill them in later the only set folks right now will be Daku, his sister, and Reiki herself and I'll make write ups for each of them.

With a blow finally placed on his opponent - and by the looks of things, not a light one - Kwantu was.. moderately happy. While Daku recoiled, he stood proud and brought the spear back down again in a brief respite from the combat, and a time to relax. The only thing that broke it, was the gentle touch on his shoulder that told him that she'd been watching. He didn't really know what it meant, but it was nice to know. Daku got the same as well, and after a few chimes of heavy breathing and rubbing excess sweat and dust from their eyes, he began a fresh bout of combat. After all, the day was still young, and the sun was still hot.. and there were plenty more battles to go around. Why stop now?

By the end of it all, he couldn't even remember how many blows they'd exchanged. A smack to the side of the face, a quick jab to the ribs, or even a swipe that threw one another to the dust. It all seemed to blur together under the heat like some strange hallucination that seemed a little bit too real. Kwantu leaned against his spear, and ended up using it as a walking stick to lean against as he followed Daku and the rest of the warriors towards Reiki. To hear if he'd finally found a new family - and a new home. Because really, that was what he wanted. Not because he hated the parents and brothers that he already had - but for the excitement and the adventure. Who didn't want that? Well, that and plenty of Dhani hunts.

He wasn't to be disappointed. As soon as he'd worked it out in his head, a broad smile spread over his face and his sweaty palm slapped Daku on his shoulder in rebuff. "Don't know about that. If you think I'm done with you, you've got another thing coming." Not that he could see any of the other members that wouldn't be a challenge by themselves too. In total, 3 men and 4 women. The other male that soon joined them seemed affable enough, but the hulking sword that he carried over his tattooed shoulder looked like it would have very little difficulty removing heads from shoulders. Among other things.

eoocOh sorry for the confusion, I meant there were 7 folks in total beside Reiki, Daku, and Kwantu, making for a total of 10 fang members

Reiki led her new fang with long confident strides to a long room, empty save for a long table and a handful of chairs. When all were assembled, breath still huffing from exerting themselves in the yard the dark skinned woman turned to them, white teeth flashing in a quick grin that betrayed her own excitement. She recovered quickly, however, placing both her hands upon the end of the table and looking each and everyone of them eyes before she began to speak.

"I only know a few of your names, have only seen a taste of what you can do, but we will carve a name for ourselves among the ranks, that I can be certain of. Take a bell to cool off, get water in you and stretch, collect what you need from your bunks. We meet back here and will head out on a routine scouting mission around the perimeter today. This will allow me to get to know you all, and for us to get a feel for how we will move when hunting and traveling through the jungle."

She nodded once, a sign that she was done, and everyone began to disperse, eyeing each other and starting to talk to those of whom would be their new fangmates indefintely.

Daku punched his sister in the shoulder and she grimaced at him, but a smile played on her lips as well at being paired in the same fang.

Kwantu was left to his own devices, but not for long, there was work ahead of them, and this was simply the beginning...
