[Cliffside Grotto] Where sea meets sand. (Shijara)

Finian has only heard of deserts in stories, and they are nothing like the beach.

Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Date 18th of Spring, 514. Late afternoon.
Location The Cliffside Grotto

It had rained all morning. A steady, heavy downpour that made for a steady, relaxing rhythm on the salt-worn deck of The Handmade'n. Finian didn't venture out in it all morning, spending half of it lazing about in his berth, under warm blankets instead of anywhere wet and cold. Eventually, hunger drove him to crawl out from his hiding place, realizing he had no idea what time it was, so gray and lifeless outside his port windows that the passage of the sun was completely unknowable.

The rain had slowed to a drizzle and the itinerant shipwright couldn't bear the thought of spending any more time trapped in the small quarters of his sea-faring home and transportation. Not that the city was much of a comfort to the Svefra, but he'd just have to explore for once. Something inside him trusted there was more to the city than towering blue men armed to their shining teeth and unreadable miles and miles rules.

Tugging on his worn breeches and dusting off his vest, he decided it was also in his best interest to wrap himself in his wool cloak as well, given that it wasn't quite warm enough yet and … well … the petching rain. He tucked his hatchet into its place at his belt, turning back to his berth to poke at the fluffy white lump still hiding under warm blankets that smelled of sea brine and sunshine.

The albino otter opened one eye to peer at his Svefra companion and snorted, whiskers wiggling in protest.

"C'mon y'lazy bum. Let's go find somethin' to do'n this petchin' city. There's some sights t'see I'm sure." Ian chuckled, waving a hand for the creature to follow him as he climbed up the short flight of stairs and out onto the deck of his casinor. As soon as his freckled, stubbled face left the hatch, he was forced to squint and sputter, assaulted by chilly mist and rain. The roar of the falls filled his senses and once he hefted himself onto the slick, wet hull, he pulled up his hood over his sea-baubled blond locks and slipped over the rails onto the docks.

Everything was heavy and grey, quietly drown out by the sound of the Bluevein falling from the cliffs above and by the light rain that pattered off sailcloth, rigging, and barnacled wood. It was finally enough sound to drown out the busy docks full of merchandise moving, bodies moving, ships moving.

Finian and Waverly wandered their way through the soaked crowds, the otter happily splashing in puddles along the way behind his companion. The blond shipwright once again dug his paperwork out from the inside pocket of his leather vest, letting the Port guards give it a once over as he stood there under their glares, feeling their eyes judge him by his Oceanus and the Laviku-glorifying inked lines that marked him as a Svefra.

Oh well.

They let him pass anyway and he was free to explore the city once again.

Once he had climbed his way up from the docks, which was a fairly steep accent to be sure, he simply picked a direction he hadn't been before and decided to walk.

He wandered past store fronts and other important-looking buildings, knowing well enough he didn't have enough Mizas to scrape together for anything anyway. Not that he felt in want, either. If he really needed something, it seemed to always find its way into his hands … somehow. Laviku took care of his own, and Ian trusted in that on a daily basis.

The itinerant shipwright and his tavan eventually found themselves in a more residential area, and Ian was curious about these land-locked, unmoving houses and apartments. Everything looked the same. Nothing moved. Everything was on top of each other, on top of the ground, far from the comforting sway of the waves and the constant motion of the ocean. He had no desire to live trapped in such a building. It looked so boring.

Eventually, Ian stopped paying attention to where he was and lost himself in thought, his studies of land-locked life leading him to daydream about building ships instead. Once he realized he'd gotten himself thoroughly lost, he found himself squinting at signs for any sense of direction.

One finally caught his lagoon-blue eyes:

Cliffside Grotto, Park, This Way --->

Well, something like that. Ian's Common was sub-par at best and he only pretended to know enough words to make sense of the sign. There was an arrow and some interesting, intricate drawings of flowers and trees. That was enough for him at the moment, considering he wasn't really doing anything but passing some time by himself.

The blond Svefra followed the sign, trudging through a few puddles just for his tavan's pure enjoyment along the way. The both of them were already thoroughly soaked, not that it mattered. Water of any kind almost felt more like a first home than a second one to someone who spent their whole life at sea.

The gates to the park were open, though it looked like it should have been closed in the weather. Trees were heavy with buds, so close to blooming. Flowers were sprouting, green curls poking up from the ground all over the place. Shrubs and bushes had recently been neatly trimmed to prepare for new growth. Stairs led downward along a series of cliffs and terraces, all overlooking the bay below. Finian was hardly familiar with land vegetation. He had no idea what the trees would look like once in bloom or any of the flowers. He wasn't even sure what was a flower and what was a weed and what was a shrub, for that matter.

It was all just green-growing stuff to him.

And most of it wasn't finished growing yet, so he was only left to guess at what he was looking at.

The park seemed almost deserted. Either it was too cold for most. Or too wet. Or too close to evening. Or it was just an off-day. Ian still had no idea what time it was, though the clouds were getting darker as the rain was getting lighter … so it may have been late afternoon.

Waverly splashed and rolled in the slick grass and little puddles while the two of them wandered aimlessly. Ian could learn to enjoy places like this on land, he thought to himself, even though it still didn't move and sway with Laviku's breath and the tide.

[Cliffside Grotto] Where sea meets sand. (Shijara)

Fresh flowers were blooming, and the scent of freshly fallen rain on renewed soil lifted into the air, giving the Cliffside Grotto a crisp aroma. It was a smell Shijara had not experienced since coming to Riverfall, where water was abundant and budding flora was ready to sprout color. The scent of spring a brand new experience to the Chaktawe and she loved it. It cleared her mind.

It was the reason she was out and about on a day that should have been considered dreary to any other. In fact, the sight of fat, grey clouds was captivating. When she had left the desert and entered the winter of Cyphrus she had been surprised, and she embraced these new experiences.

Her footfalls fell rhythmically, landing solidly on stone walkways as she ran, letting her mind wander and daydream. Her hair bounced around her shoulders, curling more than usual from the humidity, and she lifted a hand to brush it absently from her face. Shijara was not a runner, but like most things in her life lately, she lived by impulse.

She had not been jogging long before an unfamiliar stitch in her side appeared and caused her to suck in deeper breaths, slowing slightly, but she attempted to push past it. She didn't want to stop yet. She decided to opt for a brisk walk, using it as an opportunity to let her heart beat slow down and catch her breath. Her face was warm and she knew she must have been flushed. She continued at this pace for a few more minutes before a white lily caught her eye. It was large and open, the others around it not quite ready to blossom.

"Are you lonely?"

Shijara was not familiar with many flowers other than the few hardy stock that grew in the desert, and so she went over and delicately touched the soft petals. She beamed, plucking it from its place. She brought it inches from her face, inhaling its scent and then lifted it to tuck it into her hair, just behind her ear.

Now you're with me.

Puddles reflected distorted images and glimpses of her appearance, and soon she jumped in the shallow water, shattering the peaceful surface and sending splatters of mud and liquid around her and all over her black boots. She could feel the water seeping into her soles. This was fun.

Shijara looked up, spotting someone not far away, also walking within the park. Brief thoughts regarding whether or not he had seen her jumping around flickered in her mind and she tried to act unassuming. Shijara glanced downward, a white flash squirming around on the ground. She paused, an unsure grin spreading across her face. Was that creature... an otter?

She quickly shoved the memory of Kel from her mind, staring openly at the animal. She was delighted to know exactly what kind of creature it was. And... if it was following the man, was it his...

Shijara struggled with the memory, now of a different Svefra. What was the word...? Her face lit up in realization and she raised a hand to wave at the man, speeding up to approach him. "Excuse me," The petite female cleared her throat, looking down at the otter and back at him, "Is that a - I mean, are you?..." Shi chuckled at her sudden lack of communication skills, "Are you a Svefra?" She looked up, searching for his eyes to make sure, nodding in pride when she saw their color, "I saw your otter. Tavan."

"I kind of just learned about... that kind of stuff. I guess I was curious."

[Cliffside Grotto] Where sea meets sand. (Shijara)

Waverly noticed her first, of course. Someone else approaching, making their way through the puddles even as the rain began to lighten up and dissipate. The young albino otter stopped his rolling in buddles and fresh greenery to stand up and cock his head at the Chaktawe, pink nose wiggling with curiosity. The tavan's pause was enough to catch Ian's attention, distracted as he'd allowed his thoughts to become in their wanderings.

The green growing stuff was kind of interesting. Everything had a season like I did at sea, though it was incredibly different. Laviku's realm had just as many colors, just as many small creatures, but he still missed the motion of the waves.

He turned in time for the woman's interruption, a tinkling of sea glass and platinum braids preceding his look of surprise. If he'd ever seen one of her race, he couldn't remember. She was a tiny thing, asking him about his own race, and he visibly tensed. What did he do now? Was it someone else suspicious of him wandering about the city? He hadn't borrowed anything recently that he could remember …

At least she was smiling, and her tone didn't seem to be accusing.

The blond shipwright slowly relaxed as the woman's head tilted towards his otter. He found it hard to follow her dark eyes, which were a curiosity indeed.

"Am I a—oh, uh, well." He blinked before nodding, "Aye, that's m'tavan. His name's Waverly. Watch'er fingers ... he's a nipper." Saying the word for his animal friend mixed with common felt strange on his tongue, but he managed it nonetheless. The white creature obviously knew he was being discussed, and he was happy to sniff Shijara without any trepidation, little wet paws on her legs and a few snorts and whines in her general direction,

"I'ma Svefra, aye, but if you're missin' somethin'," He grinned, mostly joking as a calloused hand rubbed the freckled back of his kneck, taking a moment to study the woman who'd found him. Her hair was the opposite of his, as dark as any night at sea, but not so different, littered with a few feathers and beads. The young Svefra just found it difficult to read her expressions because of how much darker her eyes were, pools of black without any visible white to let him know which way they were even looking, "It weren't me."

He laughed then, shrugging his shoulders even as his tavern may or may not have found something worth nibbling on attached to her person,

"So, uh, are y'lookin' for a particular Svefra or will any'f'us do?"

Her smile lowered to a knowing smirk when she heard his words, "Sticky fingers, eh?" Shijara had not stolen anything before, nor had much experience with thieves. There was no judgment. In fact, the opposite happened. Something about his words interested her, "I won't tell." She winked, her eyes lowering to the tiny white otter giving her attention. It was difficult to deny the urge to try and pet him, but she took Finian's warnings to heart and kept her hands to herself. Even after the animal began nibbling at the laces to her boots.

"Although, you shouldn't act so suspicious. If you want something, you could always ask," It wasn't like Shijara's possessions were of much worth. She had the trinkets in her hair, the clothes on her back, and a few mizas in her pocket. Everything else was packed away with her horse at the stables. Casually, Shijara brought up a hand to her hair and plucked one of her hair pieces free. It was a white, braided rope with wooden beads and a tiny round bell laced into the threading. A black feather that would have a blue tint in a brighter sunlight hung at the end, unblemished. There was a small clip that would attach to the hair and she bounced it in the palm of her hand, before leaning forward and dangling it, keeping her hand safely out of reach of the otter.

She straightened back up, her voice light, "And that depends. Are you Svefra all the same, or can you surprise me?" She was testing him. If you wanted to know about a person, you needed to challenge them, to see how far they would go, either verbally or in their actions. It was a way to test limits, to get a foundation. She had been pushed a lot since leaving the desert and had learned a lot about herself. Why couldn't this work with strangers as well?

"What is your name, yellow hair?"

"It ain't stealin' if no one's usin' somethin', anyways." Ian replied simply with a mischievous sort of wink, chuckling while knowing full well he wasn't quite able to explain in words, especially in Common, his very, very loose views on personal property. It was more of a worldview, anyway, and one that was better lived to it's fullest than entirely explained.

His lagoon blue eyes followed the movement of her hands even as she was busy teasing him about the racial stereotype he was most used to rubbing up against. Were they trading? Was she trading right now? Did she want something from his hair? How fun! Ian's creativity took many forms, and though shipwrighting was primary, it was hard for the Svefra to resist interesting trinkets, shiny or not. He was still laughing despite her chiding, his own wood-worn hands moving to mirror the dark-haired woman's motions. He began to untangle a strand of green and blue sea glass beads from his platinum locks, though his gaze didn't leave the lovely dark feather the dark-eyed woman was waving dangerously close to the pink nose of his albino otter.

Waverly soon realized Shijara would be keeping the dangling curiosity just out of his reach and quickly resorted to curling up into a ball of pathetic cuteness at her feet instead, paws in the air in an almost begging motion even as he snorted with disappointment.

The blond Svefra nudged the white creature with a sandaled foot, not looking down at him, "Jus' like e'ry wave on th'sea ain't the same, neither are Laviku's children at all like each other all th'time. We're all dif'rent, last time I checked. If'n one'f us has gone an' rained on your sunny day, I can't change that. But—"

He grinned and held out his beads in his calloused palm in trade, his left arm inked with stylized wave tattoos running from wrist to shoulder and disappearing underneath his still-moist cloak to wind over the rest of his left side, tangling somewhere over his ribs with his Oceanus mark and ending somewhere over his shoulder in the large sea hawk that marked him true to his pod's name. He held out the sea glass beads, hoping for the lovely dark feather in return. He hadn't noticed the feather until she'd removed it from her equally dark hair. It was somewhat like magic, but not quite.

"—But, my name's Finian Truewind, an' I'm pretty sure we ain't met b'fore. You'll have't make yer own mind up as t'if my folk're all the same. I'll jus' be m'self an' we'll see what happens, eh?" If the smaller woman was indeed willing to trade hair accessories, the Svefra would spend a lot of time examining the feather, admiring it's faint shine by running a finger over the delicate barbs before looking up again,

"An' what can I call you, o'dark-eyed, lass?" Ian added warmly, still finding it strange to meet the Chaktawe's gaze. Her eyes were like the ocean on a cloudless night without Leth's face, shiny but unfathomably dark. He found it hard to read her expressions well, but the itinerant shipwright wasn't one to let that get in the way of his friendly curiosity. If he'd never met one of her race before, which he was sure he hadn't, he'd have to find out what she was.

The blue and green sea glass was beautiful, even in the dimming light of the day. The Chaktawe straightened and plucked the offering from Finian's calloused fingers, holding it up for a good look. She liked it. Handing over her own hair ornament, Shijara smiled in acceptance. This would do just fine. The colors would look vibrant in contrast to her black waves, and she did enjoy trinkets. It was perfect!

"Let's make a bet," Shijara lifted her hands, beginning to separate a lock of her dark hair from the rest, working the decoration into the strands, "If you make a good impression on me," Finian's beads took to her hair and she gave them a small tug to test the durability of the hold, "Then I'll tell you my name and never question Svefra individuality. But if I hate you..." The female smirked, "I'm taking my feather back."

It was an innocent wager. A bet she felt confident in. "Don't worry. I'm easy to get along with. Of course, we could always play a game. Do you like games?" Shijara sidestepped, placing her hands on her hips, twirling around and moving up the pathway, "I have an idea, Finian."

Shijara emphasized his name, a subtle teasing that he still didn't know hers. She turned her head towards him, something in her body language that was similar to a cat. She waited for his response, flashing a glimpse of white teeth in the late afternoon. It was up to him.

His fingers had already forgotten where the feather had ended up in his platinum hair, though it stood in stark contrast to the lightness of his locks. Give what back?

The freckled blond couldn’t help but let a bit of a wince cross his features as the woman said the word hate. His otherwise bright blue eyes clouded, and her words briefly overshadowed the entertainment he’d begun to take at watching her weave his seaglass into her black hair. He’d run into plenty of ignorant outsiders before, but he’d always chalked it up to being stuck on the land for their whole lives. Without the pull of the tides and the motion of the waves, no wonder everyone was so uptight and unforgiving. Another reason living on the Suvan was the best kind of life as far as he was concerned.

Whatever one of his kind had done to this dark-eyed lass had apparently been unkind, and while he couldn’t possibly change or make up for that, he wasn’t too keen in being thrown into the same casinor as whoever that individual had been. He was captain of his own ship, thank you very much. Finian wasn’t sure how to respond to such a thing, as cruelty wasn’t part of his nature. He could be rough and often came across as rude whenever his creative idiosyncrasies flared, but he was otherwise a buoyant sort of man.

”A bet ‘r’a game? Those ain’t so diff’rent, lass. Mayhaps I can win at either one, though, sometimes, losin’ can’t be that bad either. Sometimes.” The itinerant shipwright laughed to shrug off any further darkness that had surrounded her words, cautioning a new, crooked smile. Ian wasn’t going to lie. He liked easy … to get along with. Yes. That. Wait … what were they talking about?

He studied her carefully, still completely unsure about her race. Almost human, but not quite. Her dark eyes like tidepools on a night without Leth’s face in the sky. Small enough that he felt he could pick her up like so much lumber, but not delicate so much as confident. She taunted him like she knew what he was doing, and that was enough to make the Svefra curious about what kind of game she could possibly want to play with the likes of himself.

Laviku-born eyes blinked and he shrugged, rubbing the reddish stubble at his chin, ”Oh, aye, I like games sure’nough. It ain’t gonna be a drinkin’ game, so let’s see what you’ve got in mind.” With a smirk, Ian added with no small hint of coyness of his own, willing to rise ot the challenge with his sails full in the wind, “Keep in mind ‘ere, I ain’t got much coin, so hopefully you’ve got another kind’o’wager we can play for.”

"Well, how about we see who can get their hands on the most interesting item?"

Shijara turned and was grinning at him. Something in the way her lips were slow to fall gave something a little mischievous about the smile, "Winner gets a prize." In all honesty, Shi was kinda interested in if he would take the deal. She was by no means the law. She abided by it, but there wasn't many strict rules out in the desert. "Unless you have something better in mind?" While she had told Finian that she would stop grouping the Svefra together, it was hard to resist. Most seemed up for a little fun, even if it meant it wasn't all allowed. The way he carried himself made her think so. It was exciting to meet a daring figure who hadn't made her groan within the first five seconds of knowing them.

Her voice raised at the end, indicating her curiosity. She moved towards him and held out her hand. It was soft and small. Feminine. Yet to see hard times, "Is it a deal?" The two strangers could leave the park or stay there. It was up to him, but she was interested in his answer.

oocOMG. So short. Sorry. Mind died. GAH. I couldn't remember my original plans for this post.
