81st Day of Spring, 514AV
(7th Bell/sunrise)

Nayato had to admit that this was not how he had imagined his morning to be going. He had not anticipated that he would feel so uncomfortable with his own body, but it was his first time wearing Full Plate Armor. The armor was neither shining or gleaming, only scuffed and battered from signs of previous use. Despite appearance the armor was in good condition and fitted snugly enough by a smith to accommodate him. Even though he had only awoken a bell ago to make the trip from the Squire dormitories to the Antinous Training Grounds atop the First Tier. He was already sweating. Heavily if the clingy feeling of his linen shirt under the steel suit was any indication.

As he wandered the training grounds in search of his Patron, he lifted the visor to his helmet to take a better look at his surroundings. Image

He found his Patron Knight, Ser Cagus Brimholt, standing within a grove of trees that eerily emulated the bronze wood on the castle roof. Where Nayato was tall and athletically lean, Cagus was a slightly shorter man with a broad chest and sturdy build. He stood in full armor true of his standings as a real knight. "Hello, Nayato!" He was happy to see the Chaktawe again. The knight was very busy with his own duties the previous day to properly welcome Nayato into the order, so finding time for the two of them to spend together training today was easy. "How are you doing?"

"The morning goes well." He grinned, shifting his body from side to side while slowly growing comfortable in the armor. "I am excited, nervous, and ready for what the day may bring." The lead knight nodded happily. "We will start from the beginning. Today we shall review your combat skills." The knight said with a smile to Nayato, before he held up his left arm where a buckler shield was strapped to his forearm. "Of all the skills I will teach you honor will be your greatest shield. When all is said and done, I'll have taught you things that will spawn temptation to follow a darker path. As a knight you will one day wield great skill and weapons, and you should be prepared to use them only for good. So are you ready to learn?"

Nayato listened attentively and nodded his head in response. "I am ready." Cagus lowered the visor on his helmet as he chuckled. "As a Chaktawe, I am safe to assume you worship Eywaat of Ingenuity?" He asked his squire curiously. "You would be correct, Ser." The intrigue in the knight's voice when he asked the question was enough to make Nayato arch a brow. "And what of the gods we in the Order Worship? Tyveth, Sylir, Yahal, and Eyris? Do you pray to any of them?" He shook his head in earnest. "I know of them In name only, I only heard of Yahal from the Benshira and the rest in conversation. But, no. I have never prayed to them."

Cagus expected as much, only letting out a chuckle which Nayato noted as a quirk the man did quite often. "You will come to know them in time. However, I want you to know of Tyveth today. He is the god of Honor, Justice, Valor, Chivalry, and Truth. Also known as the 'Lord of Honor'. To worship him is to live truthfully. To always do what is right, always speak honestly, and always stand for justice. Remember, a man without honor has nothing."

The spark of a new faith was kindled within Nayato's soul. Walking an honorable life was now a path he wanted to discover or craft if need be.

"Now defend yourself." The Knight lashed out with the back of his leftarm to bash the Buckler shield into the breastplate of Nayato's armor. It wasn't a powerful bash. Its full force only enough to cause the squire to back peddle a few steps. The act effectively pulled Nayato out of his deep thoughts about religion into a combative mind set. Sliding his left foot forward, Nayato kept his feet apart and his breathing steady, knowing that the Knight was much better at martial combat than he was. He lowered his own helmets visor before lowering his gantlet covered right hand to grip the hilt of his Khopesh. After drawing it from its scabbard he held the blade high. Nayato had sparred enough in his life to already know a few counters and feints, but now was that time to prove it.

Once Nayato had removed his sword, Cagus drew his own Gladius sword, neither of the men holding practice swords as both held keen edges. Just like his Patron, Nayato too wore a Buckler Shield strapped onto his left forearm. It was a shield Cagus recommended the squire to use during the brief moment when they had spoken the previous day. In truth, Nayato found the mans recommendation to be a perfect one for him.

His midnight black eyes watched through his helmets visor as he watched his Patron lung at him. gracefully, Cagus aimed a direct blow at his squires' left arm to test his shield hand strength. Taking the initiative, Nayato braced in defense. The blades and shield caught together in a a rattling of metal, which the squire assumed would surely have been more intense, had the knight wanted to use his full strength. He could feel somehow that the advantage here was Cagus's own, and decided to do as he was told. Defend himself.

Moving his left foot backwards, he edged away from the knight to give his sword hand lead. During the switch, he slashed downwards with his Khopesh. His aim was not for Cagus, but rather the Knights sword. In a swift and easy move to come down against his Patron's blade. Yet, he didn't force it and instead of pushing against it, he made clever use of the impact of his attack to redirect it, pushing the blade away.

Cagus was impressed and it would have showed if his smirk wasn't hidden by his helmet. Although, his satisfaction in his squire was short lived considering he was taking it easy on the Chaktawe. Nayato's parry did nothing to open up his opponents guard, however it did give him time to retreat backwards to take up his defensive stance again with his shield arm up.

Ser Cagus smirked. He could feel Nayato's dedication to his training from his body language alone. He wanted that spark to remain. He was a squire once before so knew a squire required confidence, and needed to strengthen his bond with Nayato. This was why he, even though Nayato was a novice, took a defensive stance with his shield held up, the Gladius held with is point held forward. “Good, good. You have some small skill with a sword. Although, if that is how you use a shield we have a lot of work to do. Now, Attack.”

While he was a very reserved or quiet person, timidity was not in his nature. He knew what he was capable of and that was a great strength in his opinion. It was the attitude had needed to survive and he knew that it was the right attitude to have as a Squire. The blood of the hunter ran deeply through his veins and he was always a doer rather than a talker. He moved froward with his shield facing forward, ready to block if he needed to. When Nayato was in striking distance he raised his Khopesh and brought it arching downward to his patron, speed controlling him as his arm followed through with the attack with no finesse.

In response Cagus slammed his sword into Nayato's, For a moment, he kept his own weapon locked with his. Due to the Khopesh's crescent shaped blade, Nayato unknowingly had the advantage in the struggle. It was something that the Patron pointed out to the squire. "That sword. A Khopesh. Its hook shape means it can grip at large shields and pull at them. The same can be said about weapons. You could out press me if you wanted to." Nayato was so busy pressing his blade against the other that when Cagus spoke, he noticed the advantage and turned his wrist slightly. His sword arched around his patrons gladius sliding the curvature of his blade while still pressing against each other. The point of his sword edged itself closer towards Ser Cagus's body.

"Thanks."

"Don't thank me just yet."

A loud clatter of steel sent reverberations through Nayato's entire body. It was a shield bash stronger than the last, the squire realizing that the other man's Buckler shield had slammed against the side of his helmet and rocked him to his core. Nayato toppled to the side where he fell to one knee.

Ser Cagus's smirk turned into a wicked smile once he stalked forward towards his student. "That looked like it hurt. You should pay more attention. While small, the buckler is light and can equally be used to attack. The sword and shield is a deadly combination that every knight should know how to use. You would do well to remember that, Nayato."

Nayato shook his head in an absent attempt to focus his thoughts. "Get up Squire. We aren't done yet."

[Antinous Training Grounds] A Shield of Justice

Morning/8th Bell

Using the brief respite Cagus gave him, Nayato stood up to his feet to take a defensive stance with his sword arm aimed at the Knight. It went unspoken, but the spar turned into a lesson of controlled movements. The sequence of motions went blow by blow, Nayato defended then attacked, defended then attacked. Hopefully Nayato was starting to have it all sink in.

Ser Cagus held his shield up then thrust high with his sword towards Nayato's heart. In response, Nayato moved his arm inward to block the thrust with his buckler. Once the stab was blocked he lashed out with his Khopesh to slice towards his Patron's heart where the knight repeated the same block Nayato had just preformed.

Each time Nayato would move his sword in the same repetitive motion from his shoulder diagonally across his body, downwards and right to left. Each time the steel blade and shield would connect they would pull away before returning to his defensive stance and striking again. His pace was slow, purposeful and with method but with each passing blow the last seemed sluggish while the newer Patron's strikes remained agile and elegant.

The sequence of attacks lasted for so long that his arms arm tingled from the repeated reverberations of metal against metal. Finally after what seemed like bells Ser Cagus stepped back, held his shield hand up and indicated it was time to stop. "Rest for a moment. Calm yourself the day has only just started and we have much to do."

Nayato happily let his arms fall to his sides after lifting his helmets visor when he was told to rest. Walking to his new squire, Cagus lay a hand on his shoulder and lifted his visor so that he could lock eyes with him. Full of pride, he paired deep into his trainee's eyes.

"For a novice when using a buckler, take a left foot forward stance and hold the shield at chest height out in front of you. You seem to have already be doing that simply because hiding behind a shield makes sense. But, I don't want you to hide behind the shield. It is your defense not a place to cower. The sword and shield are brothers in arm, one protects the other. The buckler parries and you follow up with a thrust or slash. Likewise, bash with the shield if it beings advantage... You are doing well, and I am happy to say that your break is over."

The knight chuckled. It was now a laugh that would forever be burned into the Squire's mind. "And they say Kenash is full of slave drivers." The sounds of both men lowering their visors rattled out into the near area. "You have no idea. Now attack!"

The practice sequence was over. Now it was time to spar, and with tired arms and a vigorous passion he shouted. "Yes Ser!"

Nayato took the initiative to slash down at his patron, his blade arching through the air in a sudden slash directed towards the other mans body. Neither of the men wanted to avoid the attacks, but rather block them. When Cagus blocked the slash with his shield it sent the sounds of heavy metal clashing together into the early morning sky.

It was then that Nayato knew It was going to be a long day...
