30th Day of Spring, 506 AV

"It's heavy." The boy said, his voice pressed by the heft of the thing he was trying to swing about.

"That's the weight of responsibility." Came a husky tone in response.

Elias cocked at eyebrow at the man, then at his sword, turning it over in hands and inspecting it. "What? how did that get on there?" He smirked.

"I was being philosoph- shut up and put it down, and be careful."

The lake was pretty today. The quiet hue of the lazy, gentle waters was a sight so peaceful and serene that poets and artists alike only dreamed of such inspiration. Set beneath an afternoon sky of blue, Syna, in all her glory, left a cascade of brilliance for all of Ravok to behold. When one united the glorious day with the cool, swift breezes that shook the budding trees and renewed natural spirit around the lake, it was as if Rhysol himself had taken a day off bless the land with a celestial nature. Birds called for mates in a cacophony of beautiful choruses, and it was all set against the fresh smells that spring brought in its wake. It was just... nice.

Elias did not have time for nice.

A small, frail thing in comparison to his uncle, the young boy made for an odd sight. His clothing was dirty, ruined from the day of toil and hardship, and his hair was all a mess, long enough to hide the bruised cheeks and tired eyes underneath. They had been running and exercising for a good bell before now, and he had all too often found himself slipping in the mud, or just being impatiently pushed into it by his mentor. He knew it had all been a test, though it had gone unspoken since they began. He put the elaborately decorated sword back into its sheath with a small pout of disappointment, and handed it back to the man who then promptly put it aside. It had been a gift from Torian and Elias's eyes could hardly ever look away since first laying his gaze on it. The man had finally relented after their run and showed it to him as they rested.

He looked at the old man now, big, strong and with a perpetual look on his face as if he had just caught a whiff of shyke. Elias hadn't let his uncle perturb him, regardless of how hard he had pushed to anger the boy. He was excited for this. His father had been hinting at this day for weeks, and after his mother had explained she needed to know he'd be more than ready for the real thing, she had summoned Torian's brother to help him learn the things neither parent had time time to impart at the moment. He knew, now more than ever, that he was finally going to get his chance, and it all started with impressing his uncle.

Caiden Caldera produced two wooden shields and a set of dull, iron blades. "Your mother tells me you have been pestering them for your chance to take the petitioners test since you were eight." He said with the typical rasp in his voice that Elias had grown accustomed to. He tossed one of the blades to the boy and followed it with a shield, the result of which ended in a loud clatter and a grumble from the twelve year old.

"I've been swinging a sword since then, uncle, I am ready." The man smirked and raised his weapons just as soon as Elias had armed himself. "No, you've been playing sword. Don't think what you've done so far makes you at all ready for the real world, Elias." The boy scowled. "I'm going to train you as my instructors trained me and all the other hopefuls who come scratching at their door. For your sake, I hope you're folks taught you something at least."

"I won't fail, Uncle, I won't-" Elias was interrupted as the action that followed next took the boy by surprise. Stationed as was he was on the rocks by the lakes shore, he figured he was safe. How wrong he was. A sudden flurry of movement from Caiden caused Elias to panic and in the course of the next few seconds he felt a shield slam into his own, the force knocking him off his feat and sending him tumbling into the water.

"I was just as cocky once..."

Callow Convictions

"You're wasting time." The harsh voice came, cold and rough.

Elias gritted his teeth as he pulled himself to the shore. Of course his uncle would not aid him as he flailed in the waters, striving to not lose his sword and shield while at the same time not drown. He of course knew how to swim, and in the end, after swallowing quite a bit of lake Ravok, managed to keep himself alive. Something told him his suddenly not so loveable uncle would not allow that to last long. With a grunt, Elias lifted himself out of the depths and took in a deep breath, ignoring his soaking wet clothing. At least he was clean now. Sort of. He hefted both the sword and shield up and, much to his dismay, caught some movement from his peripheral. He turned just in time to find iron as it struck his arm. Pain seared across his flesh from the blunted impact, that which he had not been prepared for.

"Pay attention!" Caiden yelled, "An enemy will show you no mercy!" The clack of wood on wood echoed across the rocky shore as the paladin sent his shield forward to be met by his student's. A heavy push sent the boy back and the two of them disconnected just long enough for Elias's eyes to well up with potential tears. His arm was wracked with pain. Holding the shield was almost torture, yet he had no time to console his wounds. Caiden charged the short distance and lead with an over-hand swing, his sword slamming into a now-dented wooden shield.

"Wait!" Elias called out, annoyed. "Aren't you even you going to tell me when you're attacking!" The boy felt himself waver as Caiden's shield caught him in the side. The force of the impact sent Elias to the ground where he rolled over his own weapon and ended with his face in the dirt. He coughed violently and struggled to regain a semblance of reality. What the actual petch?

"Now" Caiden said, "I'm attacking you now."

Callow Convictions

Postby Elias Caldera on May 9th, 2014, 2:23 am

"Oh. Ok. Thanks." Elias hoisted himself from the ground. The moment he was standing he assumed a hesitant, wary poise, the shield held close to his body as if it was his last bastion of defense. His father had been rough, but it was if Caiden was actually trying to kill him. Was this his mother just trying to scare him away from his destiny?

At least this time he expected the attack. The sword came at his head now and so Elias raised the shield high, almost attacking the blade as he knocked it aside. Wrong move. He underestimated his uncle's strength as the man pushed forward, his own wooden slab impacting the boy's chest with a sickening thud. Elias stumbled backward and gasped for air. He dropped his weapon and grabbed at his body, too distraught to even think. He couldn't believe it! This wasn't fair. What came next however, was worse. He felt something behind his calf and without warning his balance was gone. The sweet sensation of pain returned and the boy realized he was on his back. From his new position he stared up, the silouethe of his uncle blocking his gaze from the sky. He groaned something that might have been a question... or a plead for a merciful death, it was hard to tell.

"Never drop your weapon, Elias. Ever. Your shield and your sword must always be raised." Caiden took a few steps back. He knocked his blade against the edge of his shield and waited, patiently. "Rise. There will be time for sleep when were done."

Rage replaced pain, and it showed on his dirty, wet face. Of course he was losing. Caiden was a giant and he just a kid, how was he expected to beat him! Elias pushed himself off the ground. He could feel his heart beat as he reached for his equipment, the adrenaline pounding in his veins. With a lowered shoulder the boy charged his uncle, shield held out in front while the sword trailed behind. If Caiden thought just because he was bigger and scarier that Elias would just give up, he was wrong. He would force the man to face the fact that he was ready for the Ebonstryfe, and he would do it looking up at Elias from his back while he lay in defeat. The young Caldera could feel his moment of victory coming. Each step brought him closer and closer. He would best this tired old man and send him back to Ravok with his tail between his legs to tell his father and mother how badly he had been beaten by their son!

Or... or maybe not.

Elias's eyes widened in fear. Caiden moved aside and took his blade with him, sweeping about and slamming the weapon into the back of the boy's knee. The shock was enough to break the charge and Elias found himself on one leg and with a vague idea of just what was about to happen next.

He landed hard.

"You've got spunk, that's cute. So does every other little girl. It takes more than that to join the ranks." Elias raised a hand to halt his uncle's advance? "Maybe... I'll allow you just a s-small break. So... so you can catch your breath."

"... because the rest of Mizahar are idiots, that's why." Caiden spat, nearly losing the cattail root he was chewing on. Elias didn't like cattails, but he chewed his anyway. He didn't want to let his uncle think he was done resting. "They call him the a monster because they are naive. They fear him because they are fools. Rhysol is as loving and necessary to this world as the moon and the sun. But they will see, soon, I pray, they will all see." Elias nodded. He had heard this a thousand times, but he was just stalling. His head still stung and so to did the rest of his body. "But you didn't ask about that, you asked about the shard." had he? He couldn't quite remember, but nodded his head anyway.

"The shard was what drew the first priests to this lake. It was what protects the city from the elements and sees its people safe and comfortable all year long. It is but a drop of our god's blood, sacrificed by Rhysol in his mercy to see his people safe in the chaos following the Valterrian. With his guidance, the Voice was first to find it, and with her druvin, she built the first temple around it so as to allow all his followers a place of worship and reverence."

Elias bobbed his cattail up and down carefully, noticing how fervent his uncle's words were. The boy already knew this all to be true, but the way Caiden looked as he repeated the history showed more admiration and devotion than he had expected from a simple history lesson. "That is why Syliras will fall, and Ravok will bath in her ashes." He said, rising from his seat and his hand falling to the scar upon his neck. "Our God loves us, theirs is dead. Now get up, you've rested long enough."

Callow Convictions

Postby Elias Caldera on May 9th, 2014, 2:23 am

"Now lean into the strikes before they hit, interrupt the motion!" Caiden spoke as he raised his blade into the air and brought it down with his full power. Elias could swear he felt his shield shatter as he defended himself from the strike. His muscles ached, but he did not care for a repeat of the day previous. His breathing heavy, Elias found his footing again. He dug his left heel into the ground and put his right foot forward, his weight set back until the moment of impact, then he leaned into the blow and raised his shield in defiance. Fortunately his uncle had allowed him to forgo the sword in the spirit of training, allowing him to trade off arms when one hurt too much to use. Sweat and bruises covered his flesh.

Strike. Block. Strike. Block. Elias felt the rhythm of the assaults as they came, his body set in a sway of motion. His current arm was numb, a blessing in disguise as he felt little pain when Caiden brought his sword down. Strike. Block. Strike. Blo- Where was the thud? Elias appeared confused for a brief moment before he felt a solid impact on his back. He yelped and stepped forward. A snap brought him around to face his uncle and he glared at the man, fearing that this would happen.

"You know who gets complacent? The dead. Be aware, be focused. Again!" Caiden yelled and stepped forward. He brought his sword down and Elias felt the troubling crunch as the weapon hit wood and was buffeted away. Yet this time his uncle did not let up. The man pushed back and with his greater strength and forced Elias to put all of his weight into his lean. Devious as he was, Caiden forced the shield upward and raised his foot, slamming his heel into Elias's belly. There was a cough, then defeat.

Caiden watched as his nephew withdrew and attempted to regain hold on of his breathing, the pain clouding his ability to act. Perhaps the old man, for maybe a moment had considered a brief allowance of pity, but that would have defeated the purpose of the training, wouldn't it? Of course it would...

The sword came back. In a desperate flurry Elias flung the shield around and bashed the side into the blade, it's course knocked far from his body. Relief washed over him. Finally, a reprieve, brief however it may have been. In his stupor the boy remained stagnate after creating his small opening, only to have it filled with a fist from his uncle. At first he spun, then he collapsed to the ground yet again, a companion Elias found to be a common acquaintance these days.

"When you're finished crying, get up and go again."

Callow Convictions

Postby Elias Caldera on May 9th, 2014, 2:24 am

"Stop thinking of your shield as just a shield. The thing is more a weapon than you know." Caiden shouted between impacts. He took his own shield and thrust the wooden frame forward. The high velocity clack of wood screamed across the clearing as both shields met in contest. Only brief moments passed before the next assault and both Ravokian found their arms to be weakening, though Elias was only assuming that was the case with his much larger uncle. He didn't quit know how much it took out of a man his age to beat up little boys, but something told him it wasn't much.

Both would lean back, set their heels, then snap forward, shields collided and bouncing off one another only to repeat the process again and again. Time seemed to have drifted from concern a while ago. In fact, neither could remember where the sun was when they began. Perhaps only seconds had passed, minutes maybe. However long it had been, it felt like centuries for Elias.

The entire day passed without Elias's hand even so much as grasping a sword. In truth he was not sure he could even hold the weapon let alone swing it. Another loud clack brought him back to reality and the boy reset himself, focusing the best he could on his uncle's movements. The slightest irregularity and Elias would spring into action, prepared against some kind of underhanded assault. Already he was conditioned to respond. At first with fear, then with action. The steady barrage of pain was the best teacher of all. Still, he could not help but fall into a pattern. Strike. Reset. Strike. Reset. He found a strange symphony to the action, like a hymn of battle and war.

The idea of that sent images of himself adorned in the black of the Ebonstryfe, much older than he was now, and much, much more impressive. Soon, he thought between bouts. Very Soon. Somehow Elias found the strength. He thought himself to be too tired for such daydreaming, let alone the training he was being tormented with. His muscles ached and his head pounded, but in a single moment of clarity he felt a rush. With the next set Elias brought his weight around with a reckless abandon. He mustered every ounce of his strength and spun, his shield colliding against it's nemesis with the force not unlike that of a bull. A sickening snap replaced the usual sound and Caiden quirked a brow. The man looked over his own shield and glanced down at the two neat wooden pieces that lay at his feet.

"Well done. You've broken your shield."

Was that a compliment? Elias almost smiled, but found that he was in no such state of safety. The boy prepared himself as Caiden's shield came around and whipped him in the arm, one that Elias had placed there to prevent the inevitable strike at his side. He had saved himself the fall, sure, but he was not so sure he would be able to use that arm again. Caiden's foot came next and Elias found himself leaping back, more out of animal instinct than anything else. He stumbled and fell, but he survived. He decided he would lay there for some time, decided being a strong word considering his body gave him little choice in the matter.

"I liked you better when you were just the uncle who drank too much, and brought me presents."

"And I liked you better when you were an adorable little babe too young to talk back."

... I was never adorable.

Callow Convictions

Postby Elias Caldera on May 9th, 2014, 2:24 am

Elias awoke the next day screaming and flailing. Suddenly being introduced to a face full of water while you lay in bed had a way of doing that to a person. He jolted up right and his eyes flew open, confused and furious. At first he was not so sure where he was, but once his muscles started to ache the boy was quick to recall. The soft embrace of his bed had done little to ease his soreness. He looked up at Caiden with confusion. "H-" he coughed and sputtered water. "How did you get in my room?!"

"Your mother let me in. Get dressed, we've got more training."

"Mom!"

-------

Elias didn't mind running. Sometimes he enjoyed it really, but he figured that was just because in a place like Ravok, so congested and packed in tight, were was a boy supposed to run? The roof tops? Well he had tried that once and the guards had caught him, so that had put an end to that. Maybe there was just a freedom in it that he was denied on the lake city that had an allure. Running with Caiden however... Those little strolls often ended on the bad side really bad, and it was hard to find any peace in his uncle's regime of terror. The length was undetermined, most likely whenever Caiden felt Elias was quite done dying, and the boy found himself out of breath the entire way. It was worse than yesterday. His legs burned with each step. His knees ached. His chest felt tight and constricted, like had was wearing Dhani for a corset. Caiden reminded him to breath, in through the nose, out the mouth. How very generous of him, Elias had thought, Teaching me how to breath. Maybe next he can take a dip in the lake and explain to the fish how they were swimming all wrong too.

-------------

"I love your mother and Torian to death, but good god, son, they did not teach you a damn thing."

They had taken a respite from the exercising after they had made it back to where Caiden had established their little boot camp for his victim. "You can hold a sword, maybe even a shield, but you've got not talent for it." Elias fumed.

"I do to. You're just too big. I can beat any other boy my age."

"You won't be fighting children when they take you as a petitioner, Elias... I don't think you're ready for the Eb-" Caiden was cut off as he watched Elias leap to his shaky feet and sprint off towards to where the swords and shield lay. The boy armed himself without another word and tossed the old Stryfer his own. In fact, he didn't make a single peep. He just attacked.
