Ain't No Rest For The Wicked

5th of Summer, 514 AV

They could see it from the docks, a dozen tiny tendrils in the distance, like black little fingers waving at them as they crested over the blur that was the lakeshore tree line. That had been hours ago. Now, as the boat slid unto shore, no grace or decorum in its muddy and rough docking with the beach, those tendrils had turned to plumes, and that “little fire out on the shore” like they had called it, was now an inferno.

Elias arrived at the forest only to find it engulfed in raging tongues of orange and red. In their crackling embrace, the flames licked hungrily at even the tallest of the trees. The heat was intense and blistering beyond words, enough to send waves of searing wind that slammed into his exposed skin and nearly sent him stumbling back. It was those very winds generated by the flames that made them all the more dangerous as they whipped wildly back and forth.

Thank Rhysol the Ebonstryfe were here. He had come in on a barge full of them, all armed to the teeth with swords and bows and all the ill will the iron fist of Ravok could bring to muster, but against the fires that now threatened Lakeshore, no sharp blade or tempered zealotry could help them now. Luckily, there were mages among troops, both on the boat and already on the shore as well. Those who were attuned to the earth flung sand and dirt into the heart of the blaze, their attempts to stifle it seemingly inconsequential as the blaze jumped, burst, and spread through the forest with a terrifying voracity. There were several reimancers who had managed combine their efforts and attack the fire with numerous and massive gouts of lake water, showering the flame with a steady downpour. He could practically see the res draining from their armored bodies, the amount of djed needed to maintain the downpour too great and too tiring, even for them. The wildfire was simply too much at this point.

Readying his own body for the toils of the monumental struggle that lay ahead, he was interrupted by a hand on his shoulder. Flinching away from the unexpected thing, Elias twisted around to stare back at the face of a tall, young man glaring down at him. He had dark eyes, a dark, twirling mustache, and a gloomy expression that spoke volumes about the displeasure he felt at what was happening before them. "You’re not one of mine. Which company are you with? Who are you soldier?" His words were spoken in an explosive, thick accent that made Elias recognize the man’s apparent experience despite his apparent lack of years to accompany it. Piercing dark eyes stared into Elias's with an urgency that helped draw his response.

"Elias, Commander." He screamed back, struggling to be heard over the roar of the towering flames. He had noticed the pin and markings that went along with the rank, but had thought it best to not bother explaining the man error in judgement in thinking him a solider. The man gave the answer a condescendingly incredulous sneer, prompting the young mage to finish more quickly. “I was sent to help deal with the wildfire, sir.” How strange it was the ease in which he fell back into the old tedium of rank and file. ‘Sir’ this and ‘commander’ that, one would think so many years apart from it, instinct would have at least faded away by now.

A testament to how thoroughly the Stryfe drilled it into you, the ex apprentice mused sourly.

"Fire?" The commander’s eyes widened in surprise and annoyance, then he turned to glare at the various other soldiers about, his low opinion of them worn clearly on the frustrated grimace that marred his handsome features. "Son, this isn’t just some fire, you’ve just stepped ass backwards into a God’s damned battle!" Elias’s confusion was palpable, and he tried to shout something in return to be heard over the roiling inferno, but his words were as lost as the serenity of the lakeshore had been. An explosion rocked the very ground as if on cue, shaking the earth beneath Elias’s feet and nearly sending him toppling to the ground. He could feel his stiches from earlier that day tearing already.

Returning his attention to Elias with an agitated and impatient stare, Leonis continued, his thunderous barking the only voice he could make out amidst all the other distant screams and shouts. "They should have debriefed you at the docks. Petch it, listen up: There's a pissed off mage hiding somewhere behind that petching wall of hellfire, cutting us off from the rest of our men and launching all manner of death and dangerous bullshyke at us in the mean time. If you want to fight, I ain’t got time to stop yah, just find your commander stay the hell out of the way!" A gauntlet hand pounded against Elias chest as another explosion deafened him. He thought he saw the flash of lighting streaking overhead, but by the time he looked up, all he could see was a sky full of smoke and ashes.

He returned his attention to the commander as the man shook him back to his senses. Leonis pointed, and Elias, not knowing what it meant, what was there, or what he was meant to bloody well do, nodded his head and ran off at full speed towards where the commander had directed him.

What a day this was turning out to be.

No Rest For The Wicked

Elias gathered his djed, letting it trickle out of his skin and float into a number of slithering serpents that extended out alongside his outstretched hand. Whipping one of his limbs around in a cutting gesture, Elias sent three of the creatures hurtling at the blaze. The res that traveled towards the heat thickened and extended into much larger beasts as they landed at the base of the fire. Clenching his fist, the res was transmuted into water next, muffling the flames beneath the sudden deluge and sending billows of steam up into the air as fire gave way to water.

The success was marginal considering what he faced, and literally no one took notice of his tiny victory. That was fine though, Elias was no soldier, despite what Leonis believed, he was just a reimancer who put out fires. This wasn’t his fight, it was just his job, and with Lakeshore in danger from the encroaching inferno, it was also his duty to see it stopped long before it reached the town.

Soon, there were more attacks to follow; balls, puddles, and rivers of his res that were all sent crashing downw at the fire. While it was an instantaneous solution, the areas that were able to be reclaimed stayed wet enough to stave off the heat for only a few chimes before it dried under the intense flames and was enveloped once more.

Elias groaned and launched several more thick assaults of water out over the flames, the usual sizzling of steam that came with employing the element against its opposite working devilishly well against the intensity of the conflagration, but only in make the young man feel even hotter than he already did. It was obvious they had a ways to go, but with a noticeable adjustment of tactics by the other mages on the shoreline, things seemed much more promising after a while. Those who had previously been drawing up the earth and casting it into the blaze had now begun to shower the slowly increasing areas with sand and lose curtains of mud and dirt, keeping the fire from jumping back to its original location. While Elias was no expert, he was still quite aware that pushing the fire back into the heart of the woods was not the most advisable course of action. That said, he wasn't sure how practical it would have been to try to navigate from within the scorched trees to catch the flame in a pincer. They would have to push it back like one line of infantry clashing against another on the front line, nothing more, nothing less.

There was a small explosion from deeper in the trees, the blaze swirling with an especially powerful gust of wind that sent burning debris scattering in all directions, reigniting what few areas they'd managed to clear and catching several of the mages on fire.

Much to his dismay, Elias realized he was one of them.

No Rest For The Wicked

The rambunctious flames stung and gnawed at his clothes, tearing into them to get at the flesh beneath like a rabid animal. He dropped to the ground with a suppressed scream, slapping at the fire as he rolled about in the ash and dust until, thank the lord of Chaos, they finally faded away.

Elias grimaced and his lips pulled tight as he found his footing again, brushing himself off as as best he could, but only managing to spread sooth and foulness all over his face and neck. Luckily, he didn't feel any of pains that told him he had been badly burned, but what he did feel, almost as fiercely as the heat from the firewall, was anger. He set his focus back at the blaze, glaring at the thing as if he wanted to just punch it for what it had done. With the rush of wind that had nearly burned him alive, the inferno had gained even more ground, if that were even possible. Elias knew these winds weren’t natural, and that this ‘mad mage’ whoever he was, was fanning the flames of his inferno barrier. What was worse, masses of burning refuse hurtled outward from within the heart of the wildfire, rolling across the ground and directly into those trying to combat the heat. The staggering curtain of fire bucked again, swelling outwards as another gust of wind rushed out. Searing branches and scorched debris flew towards him, though this time Elias saw them coming long before they were upon him. Striking out with one of his arms, he sent one of the remaining balls of res forward, transmuting a layer of the surface into water which promptly crashed into the incoming projectiles and brought it to a halt before it rolled, wrapped in steam, harmlessly to his feet.

There was a sharp whistle from somewhere behind him then, drawing the young mages attention back to the sculpted, mustachioed face of Commander Leonis. The man shouted and waved him over, and Elias hastily obeyed without hesitation. Racing over to where the man in black knelt, Elias sled to an abrupt halt and quickly huddled himself behind the erected barrier of stone that the stryfer had either commandeered or created himself. Catching his breath from the short, hectic sprint it had taken to reach the respite of the bulwark, the young mage knew it had been mostly luck he had to thank for his ability to avoid any more of the flaming projectiles or lightning strikes that now filled the air. Another small prayer went to Rhysol for that, but Elias was starting to suspect the great god was merely laughing at him at this point.

From his new vantage point next to the other man, he could see Leonis gazing into the fire, his skin glowing with the flushed illumination of the massive blaze. He barely moved, the burning winds dashing past him, only narrowly missing both he and Elias as he took the most minimal movements necessary to avoid them. He barely seemed phased, which compared to Elias, who was panting and wide eyed, was sort of impressive. To avoid danger with such calm efficiency was something Elias had never been quite so exceptional at, nor as inclined towards. Leonis, however, held his ground with a fluid sway, his focus placed with heavy emphasis on the crackling waves of heat and hunger that flickered in the smoke filled sky.

Elias continued to steady his breathing before cautiously poking his head around the side of the wall to gauge the dangers of that which he had come to extinguish. He pulled his head back just in time to avoid the shimmering wave of crackling fire that whipped past where his had had been a moment before. “Rhysol preserve us.” He breathed out loud, tasting the ash in the air with every lungful. “I think the good lord is enjoying himself far too much for that to happen, soldier.” Leonis was looking at him now, though the man’s attention was divided between Elias and the hell fury the barrier of stone spared him from.

This is madness.” Elias moaned. “I’ve never seen magic as strong as this.” Leonis turned to him, finally resigning himself to a seat against the barrier as the sight of a fireball exploding amidst another group further along the battle line sent a shiver down his spine. “I told Carsis to be careful, I told him these damn Nuits spend centuries honing their skills, making themselves as dangerous as they can for the day they can take back their fallen empire. He didn’t listen. He never listens!

Carsis?

The Paladin in charge. He planned this whole thing; the raid on his hideout, letting the nuit escape the city so we could take him in the woods without collateral, the ambush, all of it.

Where is he? Why isn’t he leading his men? Its bedlam out there, and no one knows what the petch they’re doing. He’s picking us off one by one while we run around like fools.

I haven’t seen Carsis since the debacle that started this whole thing. That was hours ago…” Leonis went on to curse the fools who had missed their shots during the ambush, blaming them under his breath for the failed assassination and the entire crapshoot that had followed as a result. Quietly, Elias blamed them too. “We’ve been trying to wear him down, let him waste djed on taking potshots, buts it’s not working. We’re going to have to act.” Elias knew instantly where this was going...

This was crazy. This was Chaos. He hated it and he hated being here in its midst of because that’s what three years in Zeltiva had taught him to think, yet at the same time, he loved it and he reveled in it, all because he knew his God was watching him this day.

We have punch a hole in that wall and cut down that mage, sir.” The commander’s eyes hardened in appreciation.

Glad to hear we agree. You’re with me from now on Elias, and until you’re dead or I find someone better to replace you, you follow my orders when I tell, how I tell you, understood?

No Rest For The Wicked

When they were close enough to the fire to control their res well within the range of the flames, the heat had grown to such a point that Elias had difficulty holding his eyes open, let alone take another step forward. The air itself felt as if it were on fire, and even as Leonis erected another stone barrier to aid the first, Elias felt the troubling sensation of having his sweat evaporate at a rate faster than he could produce it. The two men were moving up, a fortress of stone and water encircling them as they battled their way through the fire and magic. Through the cracks and the haze, Elias could see others making their own push to the wall all along the fiery line. As the two reimancers marched, the two suddenly became three as another mage joined them, and then the three grew to five as more and more Stryfers began to gather and reform behind the commander. With the mages spearheading their trajectory towards the wall, anyone who didn’t get with the picture was quickly left behind to fend for themselves. The more time they wasted, the more of the forest was lost and the closer the flames encroached upon the town. Those that had joined them had ceased casting against the fire, letting the monster rage on unimpeded as they focused instead of protecting themselves and their groups.

By the time their numbers had risen to more than a dozen, the small, humble shield of stone had since involved into a titantic fortress of water, ice, mud, and layers upon layers of shields. To say they hadn’t garnered the attention of the nuit would have been a lie. Within only a few ticks, the Caldera had lost count of how many lightning strikes and fireballs had bombarded their bulwark. The titan suddenly came to a halt.

Ready!” Leonis cried, res pooling between his hands. Elias and the other mages mirrored him, the five of them twisting their res around the others in a twirl of shimmering pale blues, greens, and reds. The commander turned back to his men, conviction and courage gleaming in his eyes like the inferno itself. "We cleave through the fire! We kill this petching bastard! We claim our glory!" The sons of Ravok rallied behind him, letting out a choir of hoots and hollers as they banged shields and weapons together. It was the only thing those of them who weren’t mages could really do at that point. The waiting, the helplessness, It must have been excruciating. Luckily, Elias wouldn’t have time to consider it. As one, the ball of combined res rose up into the air under the guidance of five separate modes of casting. Leonis muttered under his breath, the unintelligible chant mixing with the low hum the other reimancers employed to manipulate their own res. Elias joined them, his hands making subtle gestures to help influence his power even further. “For Ravok!” He heard someone shout from behind him. “For the Voice!” Came another.

Flinging his arms towards the sky, the dome of rock above Leonis gave way to reveal the nightmare of fire in front of them. The res rose, like a storm cloud of untapped magnificence to face it. Once it had reached its peak, the whispers of the mages broke the threshold into the audible, signaling the approaching moment of truth. Half of the res turned into a maelstrom of fire that blasted apart the wall, and the other half, with a mere flick of their hands, had become a gusting tornado that pushed and pulled the firewall outward in a large circle of flame before the elements faded into the darkness.

They were through…

All at once, in thunderous unity, every man there roared and charged into the breach. “For Rhysol!” They cried, and for Rhysol they attacked.

No Rest For The Wicked

As the flames faded, the Ebonstryfe sprang into action. They rushed forward in a tidal wave of black armor and shining swords, jumping over or breaking through the obstacles and barriers that had once protected them. Elias followed just behind Leonis even as the others wisely scattered and made room. No need to make themselves an easy target anymore, after all.

More res than he had ever before seen in his life hung uncomfortably close in the air just above his head. The translucent, glowing substances spreading out and filling the air as it shifted and morphed as every reimancer there began to formulate their next arcane assault. Elias’s attention was elsewhere than on the spectacle above however, as his eyes finally fell upon what it was the fire had been hiding from him. He was aghast to find so many bodies, scorched and broken, lying on the ground. More shocking yet was the fact that many more were still alive and already fighting, and the mage realized at that point the scale and epicness of the struggle he was apart of. There had been an entirely different war being waged on this side of the inferno than there had on the other. One man… One man did all this?”

It was then that Caldera finally noticed the enemy that had wrought all this devastation and bloodshed. Standing upon a hill of blackened earth and soot stained bodies, he flung fire and death from his hands at the soldiers that swarmed upon his position, their numbers newly reinforced by those that had broken through from the other side. Wrapped in a dark cloak, the creature's pale features were merely flashes and subtle glimpses as he whirled and raged from his hilltop. Lightning, summoned from his fingers, cracked through the midday air so heavy with magic it was almost as stifling as the smoke. Arrows and fireballs flung at the nuit in response bounced off uselessly as they met the powerful shields the corpse had thrown up around himself instead of tender flesh protected underneath.

The sight of a lightning bolt crashing into a man not five feet away from him snapped Elias out of his stupor, and with a shake of his head, he reminded himself why he was here.

The ravokian’s own res rush forward, becoming water with a splay of his hands that sent it crashing into the flames of a fireball aimed at another one of his compatriots nearby. He wasn’t the only one attacking and countering with magic either. The sheer weight of the their multitude of attacks dampened the fury of the Nuit bastard, forcing him to reign back his own offense and focus more on preserving himself from the onslaught. They beat the fire back, and now they were going to beat back its creator as well was all Elias could keep thinking. Many of the men had formed into groups led by mages, falling into an alternation of casting and advancing that protected their compliments of soldiers from being picked off. For the Ebonstryfe, this was how it was meant to be; an impressive, unstoppable war machine that knew no peers. The fires began to sputter, receding into the forest with nowhere to go, just like the one who furiously continued to spur them on.

Seeing his opportunity, res began to pool around Elias in straining quantities. Leonis noticed the sudden surge of magic around him, and looked over his shoulder. The commander seemed to understand immediately when the Caldera made a motion with his head at the Nuit. The Stryfer nodded in return, drew his sword, and motioned for his partner to go right while he in turn began to swing left.

The two broke off from their group, the snapping, cracking rumble of a forest on fire following them with every inch they drew nearer to their prize. Syna was beginning to fall away, and the cover of darkness threatened to take hold of the world even as the battle raged on. Elias swore he would see the Nuit dead long before Leth arrived. Rushing by charcoal trees and corpses, Elias spotted a sword upon one and scooped down to grab it as he sped by. The hilt burned in his grip, and if it wasn’t for the intensity of the moment absorbing his entire frame of mind, the young man would have likely screamed from the pain. Instead, his face remained placid and grim, and his whole body focused on one singular goal.

Victory.

No Rest For The Wicked

Lightning and fire, gusts of wind and spears of earth, everything was thrown at him as he ran, his speeding figure an obvious target among the more cautious soldiers who were taking their time withering away at the mad mage’s defenses from afar. It would be either Elias or Leonis however, that claimed his head, that was obvious. The nuit was tiring, his spells coming much more slowly than before, and even his form slouched and seemed haggard from the fight. Leonis reached the hill first, and the Caldera was hot on his trail, racing up the slight incline and clambering over debris as quickly as he could. He didn't realize how hungry for this kind of action he had been until now. It was like a drug, and either he would die in agony, or he would be plunged into glory. Either way, there was no stopping now.

He heard the chanting as he grew closer, low and ominous, it seemed to come from everywhere at once, but its source was clear. Leaping over the ruined remains of what was probably a cart and the horse that pulled it, Elias raised his sword and charged. The nuit had obviously seen him, but with the mage rushing at him, sword drawn and cloaked in res, his attention never returned to the other problem he had coming up the hill from the left.

The undead creature turned just in time to meet Leonis’s blade as it sliced through his desperately outstretched arm. There was a shattering, crumbling sound that reverberated through the air as the blade struck home, and Elias realized it was the Nuit’s shield finally giving way. The monster’s arm went flying, a pale, ghastly thing that still continued to wriggle and resist death even as it fell to the floor. The mad mage let out a horrifying shriek, clutching at its arm as Leonis rolled away with the momentum of his swing and barely out of the path of a lance of lightning that sundered the ground he had just been occupying a tick before.

Elias followed through as the commander cleared the kill zone, stretching his hands out and unleashing the entirety of his built up res at the back of the walking corpse. The gaseous substance ignited into a terribly inferno, engulfing the Sahovan in a point blank firestorm that ushered in a second shattering crescendo from within it's burning depths. Another shield, Elias gleefully mused as he used the flame to cover his approach.

When it died down, the Nuit lay at the epicenter, a freshly blackened ring around his smoldering form. When the beast, burnt and bloodied by the relentless assault, finally managed to look up from his decrepit state, his dead eyes found only Elias and Commander Leonis standing above him, swords raised. Swords falling.

---------------------------------------------------------------

In the end, it was the revered commander who claimed the master mage’s head for his prize, and it would have been a lie to say Elias was not at all jealous of the victory the man had garnered. It was however, not his place to have such things for himself he took note. He told Leonis that much when the man asked him who his commander was, promising to sing the young Caldera’s praises to the fellow and earn him a reward or even a promotion. Elias was already walking away at that point unfortunatly, his weary feet taking him towards wherever the last remnants of the wildfire still thrived.

Where are you going, soldier?” Leonis shouted after him.

I’m not a soldier anymore, sir.” He bluntly told the man at last. “I’m just here to do my job.” And with that, he left the Ebonstryfe and his comrades in arms for a second time.

It wasn’t nearly as painful to leave them as it had been the first time.
