Leth's Glow/Job Thread

A wild debate was being ferociously argued in leveled voices, the clips of each syllable laced with callous venom. Kol had paid close attention to the heated discussion, letting his mind wander when the argument failed to reach blows. Beside both irritated patrons sat children - toddlers -- three of them in total, jumping harmlessly on some of the cushions scattered about. They giggled easily, a heavy contrast to their parents who bickered for foolish reasons. While Leth's Glow was more relaxed than his first night, it was still busy, with the alcohol flowing and the drums pattering softly. As usual, he stayed to the shadows, eyes scanning for the first signs of trouble.

He was vigilant. He was focused. He was alert. He was-

"Hi."

Kol lifted his arms in response to feeling the hem of his shirt being tugged, staring down blankly at a little girl who looked up at him with a toothy grin. She was perhaps four, lower halve covered with a linen covering and no shirt. Under her tiny arm was a deflated canvas sack that, judging by it's worn state, Kol would have guessed was a makeshift stuffed tiger replica. Her brown hair was a mess and some kind of food, perhaps banana was smeared across her mouth. She patted his knee, "You big."

Yes.

What did she want? She continued to watch him, her expectant wide eyes making the Myrian uncomfortable. Kol had only dealt with his sisters, and for the most part, had been left alone when it came to their younger care. He still remembered running away from Peia when she crawled after him hastily as a baby. Kol understood fear and respected it, but not much in every day life made him nervous. Very few things, in fact.

Children he was not well acquainted with were one of those things.

Perhaps it was the idea that he would break them, or their fickle nature... They were bound to burst into to tears, alarming everyone in a short radius about his own mistakes. Kol did not like that. Kol did not know children wanted and tried to avoid them. For some reason, they always flocked to him instead.

"Wha's name?" Another pat to his knee. Another smile. Kol remained tense, lips pressed tightly together. He ran his hand over his hair and took a step back to reestablish personal space.

"Kol."

The girl took a step forward, much to his dismay, "This is Chupa". The stuffed animal was held out, its head sagging to the side and one of the stitches for its eyes frayed and hanging. It was stained and dirty. Kol's thoughts kept flickering to images of the toy begging for mercy; to be put out of its misery.

'Kill me, please.'

The girl brushed some bangs from her face, breaking her eye contact and going to continue with the explanation, "He's lucky. But sad." She ran her hand over the toy's head to comfort it. "Chupa likes rice." The facts given were laced with innocence, earnest and sweet. A child was a child, Myrian or not. There was a quality of youth that could not be mistaken. When Kol did not grab the animal, the girl pouted, taking his hand in her own and pressing Chupa in the bouncer's large palm. The fabric was softer than Kol would have guessed, some of the scratchiness faded. To amuse the girl he held it up, turning it over in his hands.

When he attempted to return the doll, another child had appeared, crouched and poking at his boot. It was a boy dressed similarly to the girl, dirt smeared across his forehead like a circlet, "You have big feet." Kol lifted his leg, hoping to deter the child from scratching at his shoe. He balanced on one foot, unable to move backwards as the wall was behind him. He searched for an escape route, Leth's Glow fading in the background as he was cornered by youths. The third nearly made him trip when it ran at him from the side.

"Stop."

Kol kept his voice stern, waiting for the kids to back up and resume what they were doing, on the other side of the room. They ignored him and continued to poke, prod, and share the joy of Chupa.

Apparently Chupa liked flowers, too.

They were everywhere. Like leeches, the children clung to his body, each seemingly talking about something different. Poking, prodding, preaching. Kol groaned, stepping over the girl who had handed him the stuffed toy. He needed to be moving, not babysitting babes while their parents fought over drinks. Handing back Chupa, Kol moved along the walls, changing his location so he could not only get away from the situation, but to focus on his job. He faintly heard the children behind him, laughing raucously and running after him, thinking his escape was a new game.

It took a lot of patience not to smack one of the boy's hand's away when he grabbed Kol's arm and hung from it. "Stop it." The kid was giggling, looking up at the Myrian bouncer with big, brown eyes under thick lashes. He had dirt in his hair and his clothes were worn. The other boy had coiled himself around Kol's left leg and was squeezing his calf tight, ready for a ride the next time the man tried to escape. And the little girl, she reached for Kol's hand patiently, snuggling and talking about the canvas sack.

Kol sighed deeply.

"You protect Leth's Go?"

The little girl sloppily pushed more hair from her eyes, pulling Kol slowly over to a pile of cushions. The boy's hanging from him cheered. She sat down, patting the oversized spot next to her but Kol only stared back. He did not know how to answer her question that she would understand. "Yes."

"Ya? I protect Chupa. From the bad stuff."

Kol furrowed his eyebrows. What stuff? Children lived simple lives. It wasn't any of his concern. The two boys had unlatched themselves from his body and began to wrestling, screaming in delight as they pushed each other into the pillows. Kol used the break to look around, eyeing each table and then to the bar. The bartender, Taquil, was watching Kol and the children, smirking and administering his drinks.

When Kol looked down again, the girl was still talking, "...and lotta punches. But I bite." He was lost. What? The Myrian children seemed content, and when the girl continued to pat the seat, Kol caught Taquil nodding in approval. Was he being allowed to sit down? Kol sighed, glancing over his shoulder as he lowered himself. He was tense. That was obvious. The kids cheered again.

If there was a reason the kids were drawn to Kol, it eluded him. They chattered and cheered, all the while he remained silent and stiff. Perhaps it was the way he refrained from showing emotion, allowing the children to believe what they were doing was acceptable, or maybe they didn't care. It was possible they could smell fear and were attracted to it, wasn't it? As he sat awkwardly on the cushion, Kol silently prayed for help from his goddess.

Myri, is this a test?

"Chupa is nice but will growl. He likes stories too."

"Stories?"

"Yeah! Tell us a story!"

And then they flocked, their large eyes continuing to silently plead with the looming figure, climbing onto his own seat, on his back, nearly in his lap. And then silence. They waited quietly, blinking. Kol coughed. This was a test. Myri was testing him, or laughing at his incompetence. Only fate so cruel would put the silent male up to the task of occupying three children with words.

Kol internally panicked and ran a hand over his hair. Twice. His thumb twitched and he looked around stiffly, hoping for any sort of distraction to get him out of the predicament. A group of warrior woman played a drinking game but all appeared to be holding their liquor far too well for him to intervene. An older man in the corner was joking and attempting to woo some of the younger audiences, but appeared fine. Nothing was knocked over, being disrupted or drunkenly debated other than the couple who were still shooting daggers at each other over a Syna's rise. The sharp sounds of the Myrian tongue would sound like battle in itself to any outsider who happened to listen to the argument.

Kol finally groaned and returned his attention to the children who were eagerly waiting. A moment of suspense as the male racked his brain... A few thoughts fluttered as he creativity began to stir.

"No."

A unison of screeching disappointment rained upon him. Patrons turned their heads in response to the cries, and a noticeable wince crossed his face. Kol resisted the urge to bolt, staring blankly forward. The little girl waved Chupa around wildly stumbling over her words as she tried to explain why 'he had to', and Kol searched for the parents. This would be a good time for them to restrain their kids, and luckily they were both on their feet, but they didn't even give so much as a glance in any direction but themselves. Their voices raised in loathing, curses and harsh insults flying through the air. Kol swiftly held up a hand, his attention now caught.

The children followed his eyes and a hush of quiet fell over them. The yelling rose higher, with the male's voice resounding clearly, "Sha'lokk!"

The bouncer pushed himself off the cushion and began bounding towards the two. Kol knew. The body language screamed aggression. He picked up his pace, crossing the room almost instantly, watching as the woman slammed a fist onto the table, shaking it. She continued to scream, laughing bitterly as she made a chopping motion to her lower body, "Ma'khan'um, Shurak."

And then it began. Kol grabbed the table as the man tried to flip it, and when he came up unsuccessful, shoved it forward, slamming it into Kol's abdomen, weaving around to the other side and deal damage to the woman. Kol grunted from the impact, as it had caught him off guard. The children screamed, begged for their parents to calm down.

Kol needed to get a handle on things. Bent over, clutching his stomach, the young girl ran to her mother, yanking on her leg in hopes to stop her. The brothers seemed frozen, watching in fear as their family exchanged blows. Finally, after slamming a few fists into the father, the woman shot a look of disgust and irritation, and a sharp 'slap' was heard as the little girl was backhanded backwards.

Her tiny form stumbled back, falling onto her back as Chupa flew from her hands. She whimpered and began to cry. Kol was disciplined often as a child, but there was something different here, something that sparked an anger in the bouncer. Pain forgotten, Kol shoved the man backwards, snarling and in the same motion, spun and returned the favor, hitting the woman solidly across the face to stun her. He threw his arms around her waist and hefted her to the door ferociously. The man was in hot pursuit and Kol shoved him out there with her. They could fight, but not here, and they certainly weren't going to hurt their children without proper cause.

The image of having seen the child being slapped... Kol's anger was dark. If that had been one of his sisters... The arguing of the couple faded and he turned to see a few other patrons on their feet, nodding respectfully. Kol went to the little girl, and crouched before her. The brothers had since snapped out of it and were wiping away their girl's tears, making forced funny faces in an attempt to make her laugh.

Kol scooped up the lost toy, seeing the animal in new eyes. But it was more than that, it was a comfort given when there was none in sight. A light of hope in the form of a child's toy. This was the bad stuff that Chupa was being protected from. He understood now. He went to give it back to the girl, the boys looking up to him for help.

Crouching, Kol went to hold out the ratty tiger, ignoring the sound of names being called from outside, or the look of dread the crossed the young faces of the children. The little girl struggled to wipe away her tears, a very small smile peaking through when she saw him with her toy. Their names were called again; a detail that Kol wished her could remember later on.

"Here."

The activity of Leth's Glow melted away, leaving him and the children he had once silently begged Myri to be taken by their parents. Now he regretted his prayers. The three children, edging towards the door in fear that they would get in trouble for disobeying. The little girl paused, wiping her face a last time instead of taking the toy.

"You protect him and Leth's Go, okay?"

And then she ran towards the door with her brothers, out into the night to a fight Kol couldn't stop. He was left in the beautiful restaurant, the memory of the harsh reality struggling to fade.

Chupa made it real.
