Barlaam Bakara Appearance Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 20 Birthday: 4, Winter, 494 Birthplace: Sunberth Appearance: Barlaam is, put quite delicately, a runt. From a young age Barlaam knew that his fate was never to be one of the hero of old or a master thief. Barlaam was small as a child and, unfortunately, small as an adult, his height being a not so intimidating 5'8" (even then only on his tip toes) with a slim almost sickly looking frame. Despite his best try, Barlaam never gained muscles like the other boys his age or the grace of those with thin willowy builds. Barlaam was built like a reed: thin, yellow, and likely to blow over in a strong breeze. Even more unfortunately Barlaam's family was never known for their overwhelming attractiveness, a trait that bred true into Barlaam. Not exactly an ugly man, though by no means attractive, Barlaam's features tended toward the mundane. Plain with stray colored hair, the young man never woo'd a young lady and, in fact, most people that met him had a tendency to forget Barlaam soon after. The only good thing that Barlaam has going for him is his smile. Always his best feature, Barlaam's smile seems to shine through a dingy window pane and warm those around him. Barlaam's smile is the kind you automatically respond to by smiling back, never really knowing why and never giving it a second thought. Keeping in line with his plain appearance, Barlaam's clothes are just as simple and unremarkable as the individual in them. Consisting of simple tans and browns, along with a little dirt, Barlaam follows the traditional style of other denizens of Sunberth. Character Concept Barlaam is quite simply a man who wanted more. More power, more luxury, more fame. Always something more. A man who views himself as inherently better than those around him but the wisdom to keep such a fact to himself. Life is cheap and people are disposable, the only way to secure your future is to make yourself irreplaceable through any means necessary. For Barlaam, that path is one paved with blood, pain, lies, and truth. Whatever needs to be sacrificed will be and it is only a footnote in the margins of the future. Character History Barlaam is the classic example of a man dealing with the cards that life has dealt him. Instead of stunning looks, big muscles, or fast hands; Barlaam was blessed with a sharp mind. In any other circumstance it could be said that Barlaam would become a scholar, a man of great knowledge the world could have learned from. But no, instead of being born in Zeltiva, Lhavit, or even Syliras, Barlaam was born in the city of Sunberth. Quickly the young man had to learn to survive in a city were the only person who looked out for you was you. In such a situation Barlaam learned the status quo and tried his best to stick to it, living alongside the thugs, prostitutes, and thieves; never aspiring to a higher life if he could help it. But a man can only fight his nature for so long before it takes over. Slowly Barlaam began to despise himself and those who upheld the status quo, the people who just wanted to survive. He wanted more, Barlaam wanted to rise up out of the mud. Knowing that he would never be strong enough to make a life as a thug, attractive enough to manipulate others, or subtle enough to be a thief; Barlaam turned to his mind, the only weapon he had. The young man sharpened his mind and tried to develop skills that would make him a useful allies to the higher ups. Questions and Pain became his bread and butter as Barlaam learned the ways to make a man tell the truth, skills that attracted the attention of various individuals in Sunberth. Slowly Barlaam was able to etch out an existent on the fringes of Sunberthan Underworld society, sharpening his claws for the moment to strike.
