Character ConceptWynn is a high spirited, optimistic individual. Lacking both a naturally sharp intellect and a dexterous hand, Wynn makes up for it in attitude. Of course, a would-be knight can't survive on smiles alone. Wynn combats his clumsy nature and dull wit with hard work and extra effort. Things come slowly to him, but they still come. His steeper learning curve aside, Wynn is loyal, warm, and friendly (though he speaks very little). Social interactions, especially with women, intimidate him, but not to the point where he avoids them. Instead, he'll often spend more time thinking about what he should say than actually saying it, casting him in the light of a fool more often than not.
Character HistoryWynn never had much of an aptitude for anything specific. His father was a metalsmith, and though Wynn expressed interest in the craft, his father was too impatient to teach Wynn anything beyond the warning "If it's red, don't petching touch it!" His mother, a barmaid, had even worse luck when it came to teaching her son what it meant to be a functioning member of society from a social standpoint. Her interactions with him usually ended with an exasperated sigh of frustration followed by a sad smile. No, Wynn was no wonder child.
Despite his drawbacks, Wynn was a amiable and agreeable child. When told he'd done something wrong, it was not uncommon for him to reply with a determined smile and nod before reattempting whatever failed feat again and again until he either reached success or told to stop (more often than not, the latter was achieved). His hardworking spirit and sunny outlook on life did, to an extent, make up for some of his shortcomings. If nothing else, he was a happy and easy thing to take care of, even if he happened to break or spill something on a regular basis. Both his father and his mother loved him, though neither felt they could ever truly be proud of their clumsy little fool.
Wynn, however, did not share the depressing sentiments of his family. He understood things were not as easy for him as others, but that only meant he had to work a bit harder to get on the same level as everyone else. Nothing was ever impossible for him, at least not from his perspective. Thus, every task no matter how menial was always approached with a determined curve of the lips. This tenacity and resilience was fostered by his parents, one of the few things they truly ever impressed upon him.
During Wynn's twelfth year, he was approached by a knight, a distant friend of the family. Most of his life, from the time he could walk and talk, Wynn had worked in the tavern with his mother, cleaning and washing. There were other children there who were much more rambunctious, raucous, and surprisingly misbehaved (though most, if not all, were constantly reprimanded). Wynn was one of the few who was quite the opposite: quiet, industrious, and determined. The knight, Ser Normit Brock, frequented the tavern on account of his interest in Wynn's mother (purely social interest, of course). The two would often chat, and more often than not, Wynn's name would inevitably rise to the top of their topics. It took several years of both playful pleading and genuine supplication for Ser Normit to seriously consider his friend's offer.
At first, Wynn seemed a hopeless case. He was completely illiterate, and though he tried very hard to keep up with the other squires, it wasn't long before they scoffed at his rudimentary abilities from behind their own leather covers. Were that he lacking only on the literacy front, all would not have seemed a lost cause. Sadly, Wynn was also rubbish with sword, shield, and especially bow (while he could draw the string with little issue, his aim was so poor some thought him blind). Even simple tasks were, for the most part, merely avenues for new forms of mess and disaster. Ser Normit, a patient but stern man, kept Wynn on as a squire for only one reason: his dedication. Knighthood was many things, but above all Ser Normit valued loyalty and hard work over any other knightly virtue. Yes, Wynn was certainly a mess of a squire, but his heart was set on becoming a knight. Not for family's sake nor privilege, but because of the pact he had made with is patron knight. Thus, Wynn continued on as a squire, learning and growing slowly but steadily.
Most of the other squires did not share Ser Normit's ideology regarding knightly dedication. "Wynn the Wreck" or "The Squab Squire" were commonly used to address him by his peers. Their jests and jibes only grew in intensity as Wynn continued on in his training. Girls were the worst. Few ever missed a chance to call him out on his shortcomings, and though many of the worst were soon dismissed or reassigned, Wynn developed a wariness when it came to females. He trusted them with his life, for no squire would let another come to mortal peril if they could help it, but his heart found it much preferred to be intact rather than pierced with shrill laughter or poisonous words.
Were it not for a handful of the more soft-hearted children, Wynn would not have been quite the cheery fellow of today. The majority of these squires came and went, rising into knighthood at a much faster pace than both Wynn and the other more crude children. Only one squire, an Abathur Nigriso, stayed on the same level as Wynn. Were it not for Abathur's abysmal swordplay and horsemanship, he would have become a knight long before Wynn, along with the others, but Abathur was content to stay alongside his childhood friend, coaching him during their late night reading sessions and keeping Wynn company for their even later night conditioning. Both Abathur and Wynn possessed the sort of heart Ser Normit had allowed to be tempered under the heat of the cruelty of humanity, and both had been found worthy.
Ser Normit had, at most times, anywhere from five to fifteen squires at a time. Some he interacted with personally - those squires who were promising in both skill and heart - while the others were often left to other knights to preside over. Wynn and Abathur were usually left on their own, as many of the knights thought the two of them a waste of time. Neither Wynn nor Abathur allowed themselves to be left out in the cold. Each and every time squires were training with swords, given a new set of political information to memorize, or quizzed over the teachings of Sylir, both of the boys would inevitably be found somewhere in the group. Some of the knights thought them funny, and though initially they were agitated when the boys showed up, they began to become welcome guests as they were the few who remained calm and collected (aside from combat practices during which both seemed to be inadvertently trying to kill everyone).
As time passed, Wynn became better and better at the things he'd once done so poorly at. Reading was no longer a challenge, given that he was allowed to read aloud, and he'd found the great axe to be a weapon more to his liking. His archery skills were still terribly lacking, but after five years of training, Wynn was finally able to both mount and ride a horse without falling off. Abathur too had improved to the point where he was knighted, a bittersweet occasion that left Wynn with an even greater resolve to catch up to his friend.
It is now Wynn's eighteenth year, his fifth as a squire, and while he has made leaps and bounds from where he stared, he still has a good way to go. No longer does he actively seek out the instruction of the other knights, as Ser Normit himself has finally taken it upon himself to personally train Wynn. At the moment, only Wynn and two other women are under the tutelage of Ser Normit. Never more determined than now, Wynn struggles to become the knight he decided he'd become several years ago.
