Appearance
Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 21 Birthday: Fall 13th, 492 Birthplace: Syliras
Appearance: Jad is a little on the tall and thin side, with brown eyes, black hair and perpetual stubble that never seems quite willing to develop into respectable facial hair. His skin is pale, which follows suit with vague look of that he may have just been ill, though he's never had any real history of frequent or excessive illness. It's not that he looks weak, he simply doesn't look like he could pack on muscle even if he tried. He has the bearing of someone trained in obedient discipline, but with an air of wonder as well.
Character Concept
Jad is a young man robbed of a childhood. So, many things that would be mundane to others are wondrous and new to him. All he known, until very recently, is servitude, as both a guard/slave and a source of djed for wizards. Hypnosis was used to modify any memories that might have given him cause to leave this emotional bondage. He was freed when the villains keeping him were arrested for a number of crimes. He was introduced to several disciplines of magic during his captivity, and is both awed by, and apprehensive of them. He has now been given a lead on a family he may have in Zeltiva, and is making his way there, taking in the wonders of Mizahar as he travels. What he will do when he gets there will undoubtedly define the next stage of his growth as a young man.
Character History
Jad was not aware of what his own history truly was. He was born into captivity, his mother intending for him to be a djed battery for the wizard cult she served. The sailor, Burten Maze, is his father, but neither he nor Jad know this. Jad's oldest memories are not much different than his recent ones: serving as a guard, servant and djed source for people whose dispositions did not appeal to him. It was only recently that he became troublesome to these people as his independence finally began to assert itself. Yet he always found himself back at his post, unaware that he had ever questioned it.
Being subjected to frequent djed drains by a leecher, during his early growth, resulted in him developing an affinity for the skill. When this became apparent, his value to the cult increased and he was taught to use this skill, but only to further their agenda. Hypnotism was used to distort his perspective of this. They also taught him Projection, thinking he might be able to leech enemies from a distance using this technique.
There was a man, named Morliss, that taught Jad shielding, to give him something to use to expend this leeched djed at once, so it did not cause greater corruption to his body. At first the cult approved of this, thinking it made him someone they could use as a guard, since he would be learning a basic protection against hostile magic. This then prompted them to allow him to learn to fight with a weapon as well, and with his fists, to complement his defensive abilities. He learned to fight with a skirmish sword, a glaive-like weapon with a spear-head point at the opposite end.
But the cult still clouded his mind with distorted loyalties, convincing him that his greatest use in a fight was to leech djed from enemies and hold it, so his masters could then leech it from him to use. Fortunately this did not go on long before his situation changed permanently. One day, the building the cult lived in was raided by soldiers and he learned it was a covert cell of Sagallius worshipers. Without the hypnosis to beguile his senses, he realized how he'd been used all his life. His testimony was instrumental in obtaining solid guilty verdicts. And since he was ultimately viewed as a victim as well, he was allowed to go free.
But before he left, he was given a ring, featuring only a large "M". A woman told him that "the Lykata" had said it belonged to his father and that he should go to Zeltiva to find him. He wondered why a ring with an "M" on it should be his, given that it did not match his name. Thinking this "Lykata" was a person, he asked the woman to thank this "Mr. Lykata" for the ring and the information. He was puzzled by her laughter, though not offended, and took to heart her advice to travel by ship as opposed to overland. This was where he learned what he knows of sailing.
