The Pig's Foot Tavern

There was a note that had been caught in the wind and latched onto a branch of a nearby tree. At first Lenz had scrounged around her campsite desperately trying to locate any sign of a letter.

Finally she had come to the conclusion of trying to look upwards only to meet the piece of paper with familiar calligraphic scrawl marring the page.

At first it was challenge to read, the scarlet haired woman’s eyes darting across the page and attempting to pick up any recognizable words. It took her man tries before she reached the possible wording of each individual sentence.

She read it aloud to herself before doing anything else. It read,

“There was a man who came to be in the late hours of the night the other day. He claimed allegations that were bewildering even to an individual like myself. I am not stating that I believe in these accusations, merely that because he cornered me and proved his worth with more than just vast amounts of currency he has deemed fitting to achieve what he had paid for.

He came to me with the request of the assassination of a young woman. She lingers near the Pig's Foot Tavern many nights out of every week simply barding her way into money. She is a seductress and an avid body reader, so be careful for she can lure you into her trap whether you find interest in the feminine beauty or not.

This is a task for you to finish, nothing more. There is no need for overly thought out interrogation schemes or torture inclined plots. You uncomplicatedly need to waltz into the tavern, seek out the designated target and successfully complete the mission.

Her name is Caela Dorin.

After letting her eyes drift carefully and cautiously over the page of paper, she crumpled it up into a ball and began to shred it to pieces so that it littered the forest floor and blew away in the slight breeze that wafted nearby.

She lowered her head and pivoted on her foot, ignoring the ever raising questions that bored holes in the back of her head.

It was invigorating just thinking about being assigned yet another mission. She had conquered two in the last three days and to her and plausibly everyone else that seemed like very often.

Usually people in her line of work only received assignments once every seven to eight days or so she assumed from her time spent observing and interrogating other assassins and interrogators. An idea popped into her mind- a rather naughty one.

What if her employer, this shadowed man named ‘A’ found Lenz valuable and even possibly more than just an interest for the caught eye? What if he liked her not only for her studious displays in her profession but also because she was someone one could look at and not turn around scathed.

She held back a blush like a child. What a daft thing to even ponder! She was simply doing her duty, something she had been given on a whim of shared intrigue from a man cloaked in the black.

She traipsed back into her tent only to retrieve her double bladed dagger. She would not use her axe, at least not for this mission, besides it was incredibly heavy and a challenge to conceal in such a skeptical and conspicuous town as Sunberth.

She would use it for times when it was needed but for now a tactic slipped into her mind and expanded out both ears. She would slit the woman’s throat- an easy demise for an easy target. She would follow through and make her superior proud, maybe even earning more trust and honour from him.

She might even toss in a flourish or two and start creating a signature, a name for herself other than the tedious, dry and even dreary name of Lenz. Something more ominous and mysterious would better suit her, but for now she needed to be off.

The sun was slowly dipping into the horizon; painstakingly slow was it drawing out past the lowest of clouds.

She zipped her tent’s flap back up before turning to follow the thinning of tree branches out of the wilderness. Once she had arrived in the depths of Tent City, she took a hard turn to her right and followed an elusive pathway towards the city’s middle.

Emerging from the wreckage of even the poorest of souls, she finally came across a building that was all too familiar. She had shared dark and morbid times outside these doors.

One occasion had been the impending disaster of rape. She had murdered the man out of survival instinct with both her bare hands and the dagger she now held sheathed under her shirt. The other time she had been met with the situation of killing a man, but she ended up refusing to upon considering the youth of the child and the future he might have held.

Later did she know he felled dead due to a cough that wouldn’t concede.

The images would never cease no matter how hard she shook her head.

She took one final step before her boots clunked hard on a wooden floor. She was inside the cavernous disparity of the establishment that sold drinks and sex if a fee was well exchanged.

She immediately began to scan her surroundings, taking in every face her eyes glanced over including the various objects that furnished the walls and tainted the floor.

She nearly stepped into a puddle of vomit before catching herself and hopping daintily over the vile substance. This was when her eyes locked onto someone familiar, yet completely foreign to her.

A young woman was held in the centre of the tavern, a large mass of manly bodies surrounding her. She was dancing for them, wearing semi-revealing clothing. For some reason Lenz instantaneously knew that this woman was the exact woman she had been sent out to execute.

She tentatively slid closer to the female, unfortunately having to brush past several fairly intoxicated men and women. Finally she had slithered past the bustling and hustling bodies of various drunks only to be located near the front of the crowd. Her eyes danced in sync with the female’s bouncing body.

That was until she stopped dancing.

Today dancing was a torture. The heat in the tavern was unbearable and made more so by the crowd. Today it truly was a crowd. Rising temperatures led to hot blooded males. Such men chose to indulge in certain brands of entertainment. Such entertainment involved a certain... appreciation of the female body and watching Caela was a very cheap sort of appreciation but still high quality entertainment. It had attracted many men who had chosen to crowd the floor space that she chose to dance in. Worse, when she began to dance they surrounded her, penning her in so that she had limited space to dance in.

The young woman had had to resort to dancing higher up on a tabletop although such an action made her uneasy. Wearing a ruffled skirt with its many thin layers was torture enough and so she'd refrained from wearing stockings, unable to bear the additional warmth that the layer would provide. For the same reason, she'd refrained from wearing a corset. The material would have pressed tightly to her skin and overheated her quickly. Passing out in the middle of a crowded tavern wasn't the best option.

Even without the extras that she normally wore it didn't take long for sweat to bead across her skin. It slid over her skin, leaving her bare flesh glistening with moisture. She still managed to shake her hips all the same, keeping her body moving invitingly despite the heat that coursed through her veins. She had most of the attention of her audience despite the drunken state of many of them and not all of them were male either.

Before she finished dancing, she noticed that a young red haired woman had pushed her way through the crowd and was watching her with rapt attention. The stare was oddly disconcerting, strange considering how often she was stared at. She just wasn't used to that level of attention.

The dancer stopped her movements and bowed to her appreciative audience, her eyes flickering to the attentive young woman before she stepped off of the table, her movements careful as she tried not to fall over. Steeping off the table was the easy bit however as she was faced with the wall of drunks who did not really want to let her pass. The heat was also worse in amongst the crowded bodies. She hadn't realised the air was slightly cooler up on her tabletop dance floor. There was no way for air to circulate on the ground though, the press of bodies too tight to allow any gaps.

The heat made her want to swoon but she fanned herself with a hand to cool down a little before trying to shove her way through. It wasn't something that she felt comfortable doing, still uneasy about touching others after the near rape that had almost occurred earlier in the season. It had made her paranoid about even the slightest touch and as a result, she flinched away from every touch, shaking by the time she managed to emerge from the slowly scattering crowd. She went straight to the bar, opting for warm, dirty water rather than alcohol. She needed to quench her thirst rather than dulling her senses. Drinking to forget wouldn't solve anything, perhaps driving her to alcoholism instead.

She propped herself up on the bar, sipping at the water that Merv had given her. It wasn't pleasant, tasting of silt a little, but it was refreshing. As she sipped, her eyes roamed over the room, looking for the redhead who had been watching her dance. She didn't know why she was doing it but there was just something about the girl that made her feel... strange. There was just something wrong with the way that she'd been watching her and Caela found herself wanting to check up on her.

Disobeying Orders (Caela)

The Pig's Foot Tavern

The beat of the bass, coming from an unidentified source, and the melody from various men and women humming had caused Lenz to somehow get in sync with the rhythm. Before she knew it she had subconsciously allowed her left foot to bounce with the beat. Once she realised what she was doing, she shut the motion down by applying more pressure to her foot.

She wasn’t going to act like these peasants around her. She wouldn’t slip below the level of insecurity and give herself the permission to be one with them.

She didn’t fit in and she rather preferred it that way. It gave her some feeling of comfort to be considered so introverted. It gave her the ledge when everyone else was falling head first over the cliff.

Undeniably, she would too fall into the chasm and break her neck like all the other poor souls of such a putrefying city, but today wasn’t her day. It might have been the guy standing next to her or the elderly looking woman squatting behind her, but she wouldn’t perish for a long while to come and she liked it that way.

It was an abrupt notice of attention, but one that made the redheaded woman’s heartbeat skip a beat. Eye contact was met between the two ladies and Lenz’s brown and green orbs fluttered over hers just long enough to have caught some flecks of blue that even Caela might not even known she had.

It was startling what feeling she had upon glancing into the dancing woman’s eyes. It made her stomach double over, summersaulting into never ending acrobatics. It was almost like she felt guilty; caught in the act as if her mother had found her hand sniffing about in the basket of cookies carefully placed on top of the highest counter in the kitchen.

It made her want to come out and announce her wrong doing, but that was a small section in her soul; it was quickly snuffed out by the every growing symphony of screams and groans from the more demonic and devious side of her.

Without warning a middle aged woman stepped onto Lenz’s foot, bring much pain to her toes. The lady with the terrible walking technique ended up tripping on someone else and falling into the Lenz before she had any idea what was happening.

The two hurtled over other individual’s legs and finally collided into the wooden floor. Lenz’s head careened off the ground whilst the other woman’s elbows and knees slapped into it.

There was partiality amongst Lenz at that particular moment in time. One half of her wished to split open the clumsy lady’s skull to reveal her membranes had she any. She wished to carve into her spleen and disembowel her with her own fingernails, but the other half of her was too embarrassed to even move. She felt no remorse for the woman, only hatred but that hatred was evened out by her feeling of anxiousness.

Why had this happened to her of all people?

Pushing off the woman with faltering feet, she hoisted herself to her knees before bracing herself to stand. Upon balancing on her own two feet and after trying her best to ignore the incessant staring faces that swarmed around the two of them, she attempted to focus her attention on finding her target once again.

Where was she?

“Can’t you walk?” Lenz snapped, but her voice was hardly audible amongst the clapping and ‘ooing’ of the crowd.

A sight that wasn’t hard to miss was the moment when the dancer stepped off the table and bowed to her audience. Lenz didn’t clap, for the mage was too busy trying to plan her attack.

What was she going to do? Who was this woman and why did she need to be executed? Why was she even questioning ‘A’s sensibility? She had been given an assignment and had been told the day she met him that no inquiries were to be given, therefore she would refrain from giving them.

However, that didn’t mean that she still wasn’t curious as to why she was assigned to do the things she was to do.

Her eyes finally adjusted to the raging crowd. They were savages the way they moved and begged for more. An encore was what they were cheering, but the woman who had given them the show proved that she didn’t wish to do another. She made it clear and Lenz picked up on it too.

She observed fairly closely as Caela cringed at the sight of an incoming pat of the back or a handshake or even a hug from a dying fan. It was strange, but not unreasonable. Still, it made questions continue to bubble up inside her mind.

Her line of sight wavered slightly as she scanned the area, watching avidly as Caela traipsed towards the tavern’s counter. She requested a drink before sitting down and growing still. This was Lenz’s moment and she inadvertently took it with open hands.

She gracefully weaved her way around the bustling bodies before finding a seat herself. Coincidentally it was right next to the dancer and she couldn’t have been more thankful either.

Although she despised conversation and because it not only posed great threat to the job but also interfered with assignments, Lenz made an exception.

She leant over and instead of requesting a drink, she sighed loudly before tilting her head and looking Caela straight on.

“You were wonderful up there,” she said after clearing her throat. “You have exceptional talent. If only I was graced with such power as you virtuosos are- clearly.”

And then she feigned a smile no matter how much it pained her to do so.

The young woman's gaze fell upon the red head weaving her way through the crowd and looked away. She was making a beeline for the bar and the dancer didn't want to be caught staring at her. If she could avoid it, she didn't want to make eye contact with her again. It had been too much of a shock to her system, sudden like a jolt of static electricity had passed between them although they hadn't touched. Just because she'd wanted to know where she was didn't mean that she wanted to acknowledge her.

The movement of air beside her told her that someone had sat down next to her. She didn't look around because she had a strong hunch that it was her. Her body tensed, fighting the urge to look around and see for certain whether her hunch was correct or not. She was wound up so tightly that when she heard the sigh Caela nearly jumped out of her skin, head instinctively whipping around towards the direction of the sound. It was indeed the fiery headed woman who had watched her so intently from the front of the crowd and she was far, far too close for the dancer's liking. The blonde leaned away from her, trying to put some distance between them without getting up and moving away. Again her eyes met the other's but this time her own gaze lingered.

The young woman was younger than herself perhaps, late teens although Caela couldn't be sure. The boldness of her gaze was accentuated by the striking appearance of her eyes. They were green mostly, bright, lively but there was a ring of brown encircling her iris. It was a peculiar feature but it added to her strangeness. She was out of place in Caela's mind but she wasn't sure if it was her appearance or something else that she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Her attitude, perhaps? Her bearing? The dancer didn't know.

She'd acquired a fan it seemed and an avid one at that. She was very, very interested in her, complimenting her dancing as she sat smiling at her. The blonde managed to smile back faintly. "Thank you. I wouldn't say that I have exceptional talent. I can dance for entertainment, all right but that's kind of it," she replied, sweeping a lock of hair behind her ear.

She didn't like the way she was smiling at her. There was something off with that as well, something off with her altogether. There was no easy way for her to extract herself from this situation. The girl had followed her from where she'd danced after all to here so who was to say that she wouldn't follow her again if she moved.

I don't know that she came over here especially for me. It could be a coincidence and she just chose to talk to me while she was over here, the dancer thought as she regarded the girl. Her gaze flickered to the bar and recounted the last couple of chimes in her mind. She didn't order a drink. If she didn't come over here to get a drink then why did she come? The young woman couldn't shake the feeling that she had come over specially to see her. It certainly seemed to point that way. Getting away probably wouldn't be easy then. Maybe she should just talk to this young woman.

"I have a talent for dancing, yes but not everybody does. I'm sure that you have talents for other things," Caela told the red head. "There are things more useful than dancing although I've been told that such entertainment is better for the city than fighting. I don't know if that's true. I'm not sure that anything is good for Sunberth but I'll take the woman's word for it." The young woman shrugged, taking another sip of her water. She hadn't said anything yet that could really draw the other into conversation, or so she thought. Could she ask her something to get her to talk more?

"Do you excel in anything in particular? Have a talent for something?" she asked, allowing the right amount of interest to enter her tone to sound like she wanted to have this conversation. "I'm Caela by the way."

Disobeying Orders (Caela)

The Pig's Foot Tavern

Someone seems to be a little on edge today.

You’re assumptions would be correct. Who knew someone could be so frightful towards the sound of someone sighing?

The conversations that were going on inside her head had been becoming more frequent lately. She couldn’t tell whether or not she should be fearful of this fact or joyous that she wasn’t alone and had someone to talk to. But it was a voice inside her head.

To anyone else, anyone normal that is, that simple statement would be considered one of insanity and without much reasoning. Just the obvious idea of having talked to someone who wasn’t visible scared the skin off of her, so with that being made clear she opted to stray from the latter and smite the former with her brain.

Her heart was quivering all the while she was speaking the demonic presence within her. Was it waiting; was it formulating a plan to finally avenge its vessel-less body only to take hers? Was she simply a figure without a soul; someone to observe and take notes on?

She writhed at the thought of being examined and judged. The in depth personal experiences she had been thrust into made her want to strive to regain her master appearance even more so now. This is exactly what she would do, but not now and not for a while.

This woman whom sat before her, the woman with the stunningly bright blond hair and vivid grassy eyes, this individual indeed was on her kill list.

She didn’t know why that was the case, but then again she wasn’t one to open her mouth and question the orders of someone with more power than herself; someone she respected yet had only met one other time.

She is playing coy, obviously humble in her ability and talent.

The conversation continued and Lenz persisted to keep her mind was quieting. There was something disquieting about the fact of having a silent mind. More thoughts and more images of the past or the future would annihilate the rationality within her and that made her wriggle with discomfort.

Are most people not? she asked with a hint of sarcasm to her latent tone.

Her attention had been so out of focus on the woman that she had missed over everything that came after her acting modest. When the next words that lingered off her tongue came she was almost startled, but didn’t show anything besides a simple blink of her eyelashes and expel of her breath.

“I'm sure that you have talents for other things," said the woman beside her.

I have talents for losing people I care about, she muttered inwardly. I have talents for gaining friends who know one can see besides me. I have talents for following orders to murder those that need to be murdered without hesitation or question.

Sadistically brutal would be a great synopsis of what she was clearly showing. In no way was it obvious and in no way could it have been easily detected by those enticingly perceptive.

Instead, it was an aura that was wavering off of her body and she only hoped that Caela didn’t have the talent of hypnotism like she had the talent of dancing and swinging her hips on top of tables.

The woman with scarlet hair was quickly becoming bored. She had no interest in learning about the woman and her view on dancing. She could have cared less whether she was an avid learner on techniques and flawless motions. She was sent to do a deed and that deed would not go without doing.

But then came few inquiries that sent a tumult to excavate the inner regions of her soul. She despised having the attention plastered onto her. She wasn’t interesting and if she was, she wouldn’t want to announce those interests for all listening ears to hear.

She would always try to incinerate the focus from off of her and expel it onto someone else. However, she was in no situation to do just that, for there were only two females sitting nearby at the bar counter. There was no one to eviscerate with queries.

She was inevitably stuck in a predicament of which there were no clearly marked escape routes.

Petch.

"Do you excel in anything in particular?” she asked with almost a skeptical tone of voice. “Have a talent for something?"

“I excel in many things,” she replied thoughtfully. She was mentally planning each and every word individually so that she would give away nothing important or memorable.

“I am a very superior writer,” she lied. “And I have often enjoyed exploring the wilderness when I am allowed the chance to.”

Where was this conversation going exactly? She needed to get on with the mission; the assignment clearly stated that no social interaction should occur. That is when she formulated a very decent plan.

“It’s very loud in here,” she shouted. “Would you care to join me just outside?”

That was when she recalled the woman mentioning her name. The words flew from her lips in a memory and infiltrated her skull. I’m Caela by the way.

“I know exactly who you are,” she mumbled almost inaudibly as she awaited a reply.

Disobeying Orders (Caela)

This seemed to be an unusual conversation. Caela was doing a lot of talking but she wasn't sure that the young woman was even listening to her. There was something about the look in her eye that suggested that her mind was elsewhere. She almost looked like she was deep in thought, perhaps even deep in internal conflict with herself. It was an odd expression really. There was no reason for her to be arguing with herself. Such a conflict would be unfounded. She had said nothing that would cause indecision so perhaps she was just reading her expression incorrectly. Even when she seemed to acquire the girl's attention, she remained silent.

Why did she start to talk to me and then stop talking when I talk to her? The dancer was left wondering what the red head was doing. Maybe she was a little bit funny in the head. There wasn't anything that could point in that direction, at least not yet. She seemed normal enough except for the intensity of the red haired woman's gaze. There was certainly something abnormal about that. It wasn't necessarily a sign of insanity. Her eyes were just a bit wild that was all. She'd just have to watch her and see if she turned out to be more eccentric.

At last, her words caused a reaction. The girl finally decided to speak to her once more. There was a chance at least that they might be able to get a conversation going that might actually develop naturally. As long as the girl was willing to talk rather than letting Caela ask her question after question.

"I excel at many things." The red head's answer sounded somewhat conceited to the dancer's ears and she had to stop herself from making a sound of skepticism or rolling her eyes in reply. She wanted this conversation to flow more naturally so she was going to have to bear with whatever the girl said especially as she could sense an explanation coming. "I am a very superior writer," the youth began, "And I have often enjoyed exploring the wilderness when I am allowed the chance to." Caela understood what she meant by the second part. She was one of those outdoorsy types, the sort who liked to wander around out in the forest. It wasn't something the dancer saw the point in doing. Nature wasn't her cup of tea. She was definitely a city girl to the core.

What did she mean about the writing though? Did it mean that she had very good handwriting, or that she was good at writing things down? Caela didn't know as she could do neither. She couldn't read, let alone write, had no idea of her letters at all and so she couldn't write things down. If she saw something written down then she could try to copy it but she had never really bothered. If she copied words then she still wouldn't be able to read them so it was a pointless exercise. Either way, the girl possessed two skills that were entirely new to the dancer.

She waited to see if the other would give her her name but when no such information seemed to be forthcoming, the blonde went to comment on what the red head had said. The other woman spoke before she could say anything however, calling over the noise of the tavern to ask her to step outside. The suggestion made her go cold. Was this the reason why she had approached her in the first place? Was she here to lure her outside? She had no idea if those men had been killed by Merv's mercenaries, or if they might have survived and come back for revenge. Could this girl be some way to lure her outside, someone to make her feel safe because she was female? Her breathing accelerated at the prospect of what might be coming until reason began to creep its way in.

Those men wouldn't dare try anything again when they would risk Merv's ire. A second attack would certainly result in their deaths for sure this time. She was just overreacting. Still her hands gripped the bar so tightly that her fingers began to ache. She let go and managed to nod a few times before she found her voice.

"I'll go outside with you if you want. I mean it's not like you're luring me into a trap or anything," she replied, giggling hysterically. She placed her hand over her mouth to trap the nonsensical laughter before making a move for the door.
