This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Roaring laughter escaped Cass' lips as she listened to the Chaktawe's retort. He seemed cautious, which was on the right path. It was the right way to respond, but in light of the situation, it was simply amusing.

"No need to pretend you know what the petch is going on, kid. Get off the horse, and I'll be asking the questions, alright?"

A momentary pause as Cass stepped forward, her smirk growing wider with each moment as she called out,

"So, black-eyes! What're you running from, eh? Murder? Looks like you're coming from one of the plantations... Don't see a brand on your face. Who the petch are you? Who'd you kill?"

Curiosity was abound in the Rujaro woman's face, and her posture indicated that she demanded an answer immediately. Cass was curious as to whether this one would fit in... Slaves were usually the sole target, but anyone on the run from the Dynasties worked well enough for the Rujaro.

FootnoteSorry, there's not too much to reply to! But this should decide things a bit.

The woman burst out in laughter, which Chayton had no idea of to why she thought he was so amusing. He was being serious, was he not threatening enough? He kept staring at her, waiting for the laughter to die down. "No need to pretend you know what the petch is going on, kid. Get off the horse, and I'll be asking the questions, alright?" Fair enough, he skimped her questions so she skimped his. He would have to let it pass for now. Perhaps if he revealed a sliver of information, she'd reveal the same amount back. If not, he'd have to be careful. There was something this lady was hiding and he wasn't about to drop it. "So, black-eyes! What're you running from, eh? Murder? Looks like you're coming from one of the plantations... Don't see a brand on your face. Who the petch are you? Who'd you kill?" The woman stepped forward, her eyes searching for answers upon his face. Chayton licked his chapped lips, adjusting his grip on his knife but keeping it tight in his fist.

Of course... How would she even find him if she wasn't spying on him earlier? Why was she sent to spy on him? What was her motive? He stood up, revealing his full height. His head peeping over the grass like a tree. "That's because I'm not a slave." He replied curtly to her inquiry of branding. He couldn't help but chuckle, she had no idea who he was and she might not ever find out. He restrained himself from moving at all, a bit fearful he might reveal a glance or a movement that might suggest checking his hand. No, the gloves hid his hands well, there was no need to be afraid. "And I didn't kill anyone. I was trying to free someone, but it didn't end well. Are you going to kill me now?" He kept a straight face but his body quivered slightly. There might be a chance he could take a leap to his horse and hightail it out of there without getting smashed with her giant weapon, however, they might be able to catch him. After all, they probably knew this swamp way more than he did. They'd seize him instantly and put him to death.

OOCIt's fine. I post pretty short myself, haha. Let me know if something needs to be changed. Thank you! :D

Trying to free a slave? The words immediately set the Rujaro to attention, each one of them looking to the Chaktawe in turn with a curious expression. It was a very uncommon occurrence for a person in Kenash to stick their neck out and attempt to free a slave. And beyond that, to live to tell the tale.

Cass looked the man over with a curious grin, a laugh welling in her throat as she realized the pleasing irony of the events. A perfect encounter. They had been attempting to recruit a slave to do a slave's resistance, but... this could be much more useful.

"Ah! Well, then! We have a friend in you, it seems. Anyway, black-eyes, you like freeing slaves? Well, the Rujaro, that's us... we're all about that life. All about it. All of us are escaped slaves that got tired of the shyke that Dynasties subject us to. The crazy tyranny of it all... It's maddening. We thought you were a slave, so we were going to ambush you and question you. But... this might be a better thing to just ask you straight up."

The smile was gone. Cass' eyes darkened as she spoke of the Dynasties, her gaze cast off in a different direction as her hand instinctively reached to her spiked club before she forced herself to look back at Chayton.

"Would you like to help us, then? We'll set you right up to help out some slaves once you prove yourself to be as capable as your are useful."

The woman was instantly intrigued with his answer, much more than he thought she'd be. It actually confused him very much so. She stared at him, casting a curious look as she trailed him with her eyes. She even tried to stifle her giddy laughter. "Ah! Well, then! We have a friend in you, it seems. Anyway, black-eyes, you like freeing slaves? Well, the Rujaro, that's us... We're all about that life. All about it. All of us are escaped slaves that got tried of the shake that Dynasties subject us to. The crazy tyranny of it all... It's maddening. We thought you were a slave, so we were going to ambush you and question you. But... This might be a better thing to just ask yo straight up." Chayton listened carefully, can't really help the fact that his face went from stern to complete and utter shock. Did he really hear this correctly? Rujaro? He jerked his head around, now knowing that there really were indeed people around him. They were watching him. All about freeing slaves? He had no idea that there was such an organization. The whole idea was appealing to him. They had to be good people then, to do such a daring thing! These people probably risk their lives every day just to free one slave at a time!

Chayton had to be cautious though. The fact that she admitted to a planned ambush and the scorn in her voice towards the Dynasties were questionable. Was this group really all about freeing slaves? Or was it much more than that? It could quite possibly be just one big plot for revenge. He could see why they would want revenge, it sounded delicious to witness the fall of the Dynasties and be a part of the slaves that free themselves. To become a normal community, a normal town, a normal place where everyone could have their own rights and freedom... It all sounded too good to be true. The woman was no longer smiling, more of looking off into the distance of the setting sun. It looked as if she were traveling back in time to a place much worse than this one. What was she thinking about? Chayton was just about to speak up when she returned her attention back to him. "Would you like to help us, then? We'll set you right up to help out some slaves once you prove yourself to be as capable as you are useful." Chayton closed his mouth again, thoughts running through his mind at the possibilities. He could either agree and enter through this journey blind... Or disagree and possibly be executed for knowing about the organization. Both had their bad sides.

With a humble bow he replied, "I accept your offer."

OOCLet me know if something needs to be changed. Thank you! :D

Let Freedom Ring!

Immediately a grin set upon the Rujaro's face as she looked upon the Chaktawe again. She looked him up and down once before motioning for her companions to leave one by one. They slipped through the foliage and the framework of trees in the distant swamps in a matter of chimes as Cass outlined exactly what Chayton needed to do.

"We've got other stuff to do for now. What I suggest is that you get rid of your horse. Sell it back in the city, whatever. No one's going to remember your face if you cover it with a hood. You're no slave, so you'll be fine. Sell off your horse, then when you feel like actually making a petching difference in life, find your way back to the swamps. Survive there for a few days. We'll be watching. We'll know you're there. And when we can accurately make the conclusion that you won't slow us down by dying in the place right away, we'll take you in. Sounds good?
"

Cass did not wait for him to answer.

"Good. We'll see you then, Black-eyes. Take your time, too. Lay low a bit. The Loraks will probably be looking for you again pretty soon, so double back or something. Go through a different plantation. Definitely get rid of the horse."

And with that, the Rujaro turned and made her way, as her companions had, into the swamp.

Chayton

The woman grinned immediately as the words left his lips. She waved for the others that hid away in the tall grass. So that's where they were... They were basically right behind him, ready to pounce at him. He could hear the fauna rustle from their movement, causing his horse to scrape at the ground nervously. The woman's voice brought back his attention from the horse. "We've got other stuff to do for now." Probably searching for more runaway slaves to recruit. Chayton still had a hard time believing that there was an actual hidden society just to free slaves! If they had just been here a few more minutes earlier... They could have saved Ross from Chayton's failed attempt... "What I suggest is that you get rid of your horse." His horse? Chayton's eyes darted over to the beastie, it's ears still twitching for the calvary slinking away. "Sell it back in the city, whatever. No one's going to remember your face if you cover it with a hood. You're no slave, so you'll be fine." That's what she thought anyway. He tentatively listened, forcing his body to avoid his own hand. Don't scratch it, don't look at it. He nodded slowly as she also started to walk backward. "Sell off your horse, then when you feel like actually making a petching difference in life, find your way back to the swamps. Survive there for a few days. We'll be watching. We'll know you're there. And when we can accurately make the conclusion that you won't slow us down by dying in the place right away, we'll take you in. Sounds good?" He didn't hesitate, hastily nodding in agreement. And the lady kept speaking.

So this is what his father wanted to run away to. Not this specific location perhaps, but to run away with a bunch of other escaped slaves to make a living... To make a living and to be free. The next generation from them, not to be slaves but to be born free forever. Chayton was beginning to understand why his father trained him non stop at night, and why he craved so much to run away. Chayton fell in love with it, the fantasy was real. "Good. We'll see you then, Black-eyes. Take your time, too. Lay low a bit. The Loraks will probably be looking for you again pretty soon, so double back or something. Go through a different plantation. Definitely get rid of the horse." She eyed the beastie again before turning away and headed into the tall grass back to wherever they made camp... Probably deep in the swamp where death likes to roam. Chayton sat in the silence, the sounds of the Rujaro sounding more far away until silence washed over him like a black wave. Chayton was alone again. And soon, he would be completely alone as soon as he sells his horse. Chayton sat down again, his hand sore from clutching his eating knife so tightly, dropping it beside him. He rubbed his face and sighed, thoughts running through his head again. Mother, Father, Nani, and now Ross... Those people that were involved in his life great or small, were now dead. All he had left was his horse... And Shaba, but even she was gone. He wasn't sure if she got out or not, but everything inside him begged that she was alive.

Chayton took a few moments to rest, rubbing his aching muddy feet. He would have to start moving soon. Even if he felt a little attached to the horse, he would have to rid of it anyway. The Rujaro would probably kill it if he kept it, use it for meat or something. Either way, there was certainly a reason why his horse could not stay, and Chayton rather share his life with a society, never alone again, than with a horse that he can't even converse with. He would sell it tomorrow maybe, since he was scared to death of running into the Loraks in town. He wasn't sure if the beefy man that had killed Ross was still alive, since the other guard was terrified and pointed his arrow at him. But there was still one witness of his appearance, and that was the same man that had held the longbow. He must have took off once he noticed Chayton's disappearance. Good thing Chayton wore his mask. That's all they could go off of. The mask, and probably his giant size. However, when he was at the plantation, it appeared that he had short hair, from tying it in the back and tucking his long hair with the mask, now it was free and flowing. There was only one witness... Yes, he would never be identified except by the very same person. He would be safe... He hoped.
