Winter 513 AV 65th

Ildi pulled his warm patchwork cloak tighter around him as the cold wind picked up and snow continued to fall from the sky. The mush seeping into his shoes. If the cold wind hadn't been bad enough. When he went to the market the few morsels of food that had still been on sale were out of his pricerange and were watched by merc's and the merchant's like they were priceless diamonds. To be honest though, diamonds were most likely cheaper then food at this point.

He took a turn into a smaller alley, trying to get out of the cold wind. His feet would still be freezing from the snow and his stomach would still be growling from the lack of food. But at least he would have one problem less. He continued to shuffle through the thick layer of snow. His mind numbed from the cold, the only thing keeping him moving was the thought of a warm fire at his home. he didn't see the lump in the snow until it was too late. his feet hooked underneath something hidden by the layer of snow and he fell face first into the snow. The snow creeping underneath his clothes.

“The petch!” The small boy scrambled back on his feet and shook the snow off him. Trying to get the snow out of his collar and britches before something important froze off. He turned around as well. trying to get a look at what the petch he stumbled over. He froze in place for a few moments as he saw an unmoving female body. Before he had stumbled over it and disturbed it it had been covered in snow. Unlike the other corpses that had already been rapidly rotting since the plague had hit sunberth. This one was still, for a lack of a better word, fresh. He gave it a solid kick, to check if it was really dead, instead of a rather thick girl trying to do some kind of ambush and botching it completely.the woman didn’t react and Ildi crouched down next to her. Starting to look for anything valuable that he could snatch up and take home. Those clothes she was wearing looked attractive. He could cut them up and stuff them in his boots or under his own clothes to trap some extra warmth. He turned her over on her side so he could root around in the pockets of her cloak. Nothing, it seemed he wasn’t the first person that had noticed this victim of the harsh winter. and they already had stolen the mayority of her valuables. All she still had were the clothes on her back. What a bloody waste of time. He let the woman roll back on her back.

Ildi scowled, he was cold, hungry and thanks to this bloody corpse there was freezing water soaking into his clothes. His stomach growled loudly and he was suddenly reminded of the rumors he had heard. About people running out of options and starting to eat each other. Living or dead. He pulled out one of his daggers and carefully poked it in the upper part of her arm. the meat didn’t look rotten, the woman didn’t look as if she died of sickness either, having probably died of frostbite or something and if he boiled or grilled it very thoroughly he doubted he would get sick of eating it. He started to cut of the woman’s clothes.Looking around and keeping his ears open for any other sounds. From the tone of disgust those rumors were usually told, he was risking being lynched if anybody found out what he did.

He put aside the strips of clothing, he was going to use them as packaging for the meat. Prevented him from grasping the cold meat with his dirty fingers as well. After cutting of her clothes he started cutting the meat of the bones. He mostly went after the flesh on the arms. He didn’t know if the guts of a human were edible.. he doubted stuff that shyke went through was healthy to eat though. Either way, he knew for sure the muscles on the arms and thighs where edible. He only could drag that much meat with him back home anyway.

He didn’t flinch at the bloody or grisly work. Whenever his concience or stomach threatenend to turn over he just thought about the warm meat he would be eating back home. When most of the flesh had been scraped of the legs and arms of the woman he tied up the corners of the cloth. Making a makeshift bag filled with meat. He got back up and slung the bag of meat over his shoulders. Just as turned around and wanted too make his getaway however

“What the petch happened here!” A disgusted voice cried out. Ildi could have sworn his heart stopped for a split second… He needed to get this guy of his case.

them man noticed the blood on the hem of sleeves and the bloodied sack he had slung over his shoulder. A glance to the butchered arms and legs of the corpse and the stranger managed to put two and two together.

“You filthy vulture!” The man growled out and his hand went towards his weapon. Ildi’s hand darted underneath his cloak and grabbed one of his throwing knives. Took a few moments to aim and then threw the knife at the man. The man had already drawn his weapon, a crude club, by the time he drew and threw his knife. It was a shoddy throw, not much power behind it, it was wobbling and instead of the middle of his chest, where he had been aiming at, it glanced the man’s shoulder. Falling somewhere behind his attacker.

“Petch.” He cursed and threw another knife, this one missing completely. The man charged at him and Ildi didn’t manage to come up with a better plan then to throw the sack of meat at the charging man’s legs. His running already hindered by the thick layer of snow, getting a few kilograms of meat thrown at his legs was enough to send the man sprawling into the snow. Ildi could take this chance to get the hell away, but that would mean leaving behind his food and after all the effort he went to get it that would be a damn waste.

He pounced on the downed man before he could get back up. Landing on the intruders back. the man below him groaned in pan as his knee rammed against it.

“Get off you filthy vulture!” the man snarled beneath him and began to struggle. Trying to throw the smaller boy off his back. With one hand Ildi held on to the man’s collar Ushing the little weight he had to keep the man from getting up. With his other hand he pulled out one of his daggers and held it at the back of his neck.

“Why don’t you start to shut up.” Ildi said in an icy tone. “I didn’t kill the broad I just cut of some parts so I didn’t starve!” He shot back, pressing his dagger harder against the back of the man’s neck. Drawing a bit of blood.

“You’re sick.”

“No I’m hungry.” He simply shot back. Killing the man right here and now would solve a lot of future problems. He would be able to get away without a lot of problems. The man wouldn’t go after him and try to murder him as soon as he let him go. He doubted he could take him, getting the man on the ground and his dagger up to his neck was just pure luck. So it came down to a simple choice. Either let the man live and maybe get killed. Or kill the man and get away safely. It was an easy choice.

He drew his dagger across the back of the man’s neck, scraping over the bone. The man screamed bloody murder and with strength borne of pure desperation threw him off him. clutching the bleeding wound in his neck as he screamed in pain. Now Ildi didn’t know a lot about medicine, but the wound wasn’t bleeding hard enough to really look lethal. So while the man was still screaming in pain he grabbed his meat and ran as fast as he could. Not looking back, he just ran through the winding streets of sunberth and he didn’t stop till he was right in front of his house.

His heart was hammering fast enough that Ildi was fearing it would spring out of his chest any minute, his lungs were burning from the cold air and his legs felt like jelly after running through the thick carpet of snow without slowing down or stopping for fear he would be caught. But here he was, standing in front of his home with his bounty of meat still intact. He quickly unlocked the door and got inside of his shack. slamming the door shut behind him and dropping the sack of meat next to the small hearth and grabbed some firewood. With one of hsi daggers he slowly began to whittle away at the wood, letting the wood shavings fall into the heart. when he had a small pile of them he put the wood away and pulled out his flint and steel. The wood shavings were the easy part, making them catch fire. That was something that always took him ages.

He fumbled with the flint and steel. Trying to light the wood shavings. It took a few tries, but on the third time he finally managed to keep the spark lit. He watched it grow and slowly began to feed it larger and larger pieces of firewood. Till he had a fire he knew he could fry some meat on. It would warm his home u as well.He then took the sack of meat and put it on the table untying the rags of cloth. He grabbed one of his daggers and began to cut the meat into small strips that could be fried easily and quickly. He was actually quite surprised at himself at how easy it was. He was eating a human, was he just wierd to just think of it as if he was just eating pork?

His stomach growled hungrily and he decided to push those philosophical questions out of his mind. He slid the strips of meat on a metal spike and held it over the fire. Slowly rotating it over the fire. His mouth watering as he smelled the slowly roasting meat. After a few chimes of roasting he lifted the metal spike out of the fire and pulled of a piece of meat and ate it. It was overcooked and as though as boot leather because of it. But when you hadn’t eaten anything in day’s that didn’t matter and he devoured the meat like it was the most delicious food he had ever eaten. After his pike was empty. He slipped more slices of meat on it. Today he wouldn’t go to bed hungry. He thought to himself with a smile and that was all that mattered to him.

Notes
Thanks for the therad, Ildi. Dark subject that I don't see often. Keep up the good work. Just a note on your writing, every now and then you have an incomplete sentence that throws off the flow, so try and check for that. Look at your first two sentences for what I mean. Additionally, make sure you pay attention to your skill levels when you're writing and make sure to display the process of learning.

PM me with any questions! :)
