Location The Terraces

A segregated community for Freeborn.

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

The Terraces

When one imagines the Terraces, what they initially see is not what one expects in the city proper. Where Kenash is built onto the last unspoiled reaches of land set within the swamplands, the Terraces take an opposite route. Swamp trees and overgrowth were cleared entirely in the area adjacent to Shipwreck Beach on the East Bank, creating a dip that reached into the shores. It formed what could be best equated to a groove, though on a much larger scale. Pure, flowing sea water was left, sandy shores dipping several hundred meters into the shoreline.

And this was where, in 465 AV, Sorin Maller, a wealthy Freeborn architect, decided to make his home. He had spent years studying, and by looking at both the Konrath media for architecture and the house boats that the Draer favoured, he devised a floating house that remained so, anchored to the sea's floor. He created a floating path to lead into the shoreline and East Bank, finally creating his home for himself. When other Freeborn saw the way that Maller lived, they wished to emulate it, commissioning Maller to construct second, third and fourth houses, all linked to one another and to the East Bank itself.

This continued, and the small, singular trail leading into the East Bank was no longer enough. Houses began to shrink in size to accommodate the paths, and Maller created plans for an actual community. A dream rose into being, and The Terraces was born. Housing is readily provided to Freeborn in the terraces, from small, 20 x 20 basic villas to much larger, floating estates. By the year 490AV, the Terraces was a full-fledged community, welcoming Freeborn into its embrace and with each one, growing in size. The community holds more than two-hundred houses in it, a total of three grand paths leading to the shores of the East Bank. Shipwreck Beach, as a result, has become the backyard of the Freeborn community, and as such, fallen into disrepair as the Dynasties left it to the 'second-class'.

The Terraces are sectioned off from Kenash proper, three paths hitting the shore just outside of the limits of the East Bank, and the Dynasties are content to leave this area alone so long as the Freeborn do not cause trouble outside of the small, but sturdy gate that was built to keep the separation intact. The gates are closed off after the 22nd bell, and left so until the 6th bell of the next day. Guards watch the gate on both sides, hired by and maintained by taxes imposed upon the Dynasty members who make their businesses on the East Bank, the peace preserved by the investment.

Layout :
ImageCommunity Layout: The Terraces would, from an aerial perspective, almost seem to be set like leaves on branches, though most will never see the connection. The following image will provide slight insight into how the community looks. The image is small, please forgive me.

The two top paths are set to connect north of Shipwreck Beach, and the last (the southernmost) will just meet Shipwreck Beach. There are a small collection of estates that brush against the overgrowth of the swamps that border the shores of East Bank, and these houses will generally be considered Starting Housing, but a Freeborn wishing to live on the water can also choose the deepest, furthest houses from the shore. All houses that a Freeborn starting PC take will be a 20x20 villa, as is dictated by the starting package. Please ask your local storyteller for more information if needed.

Name: Pascus Maller
Race: Human
DoB: 12th of Summer, 483
PoB: Kenash
Title: Freeborn, Sole Proprietor of The Terraces.
Skills: 63 Business Management, 56 Architecture, 52 Mathematics, 47 Organization, 35 Leadership, 28 Persuasion, 23 Rhetoric.
Gnosis: Unknown.

Pascus Maller is the heir to the Maller name and the sole proprietor of the Terraces. His father, who passed in 501 AV, raised him to be a worthy successor to the name, instilling into him the ambition and generosity to maintain and expand a community where the Freeborn of Kenash could live without the consistent ridicule of the Dynasties interfering with their lives.

Though most of the Freeborn work for or are otherwise entangled with Dynasty members, with Pascus' and his late father's contribution to Kenash, they can now build a semblance of separation from their benefactors. Pascus has an extremely keen eye for business, a powerful talent for architecture and mathematics, and the vocal and social prowess that make him a powerful and appreciated name in the city of Kenash.

He has been offered, multiple times, the title of Tutor in the city on the condition that he repeals his ownership of the Terraces, but he has, without fail, refused. He, in his own way of spiting the Dynasties and their progeny, offers tutelage specifically to Freeborn. Despite this, a large enough bribe will encourage him to accept a Dynasty student. However, due to pride this is an unlikely scenario.

Pascus lives out the majority of his days in the Terraces, his personal slave seeing to his needs for sustenance, though he will commonly be seen frequenting notable Freeborn establishments, such as Towery's Gambling. A born son of Kenash without the a Dynastic title, Pascus is seen by some as a Dynasty member in his own right, though he will never have the status or political sway to legitimize such a claim, nor does he want it.
