Your Words I My Words I My Thoughts

28th of Summer, 514.

It was bright and early, just a few bells after sunrise and the castle was yet relatively quiet, as its citizens were just beginning the day’s activities when Balian arrived at the training grounds. There were already a few people around; some knights, but mostly squires being supervised either by their patrons or one of the few weapon masters that walked about. No doubt they were here for the same reason he was, to practice and improve his skills. He had hoped to catch one of the weapon masters free, to help him in his small personal quest, but seeing none did not discourage the young squire. He walked past the different types of terrains; the boulders and fields, past the constructed rooms to simulate indoor fighting, past all of that to possibly the simplest piece of training equipment there was; a training post.

The post itself was nothing more than a log wrapped in rope and stuffed with straw, a poor substitute for a real person but for his purpose today, it would do just fine. He stood infront of it, making sure to widen his stance so that he didn’t swing himself out of balance, remembering one of the few maxims that his father had taught him about fighting…Lose your balance, lose your life. He grasped the hilt of the sword that hung at his waist and drew it forward, the sound of the steel sliding out of its scabbard ringing in his ears. He had become more accustomed to having the addition weight at his side, but the weight of the weapon in his hands was still unfamiliar to him. He gripped the hilt with both hands and held it in front of him perpendicular at an angle to the ground. With a cry, he hefted the sword over his head and swung downwards at an angle. The blade dropped more out of its own weight than any force that Balian had put into the swing, being able to do little more than attempt to guide its path. As a result when the blade hit the post it did not sink in to the rope, but bounced off instead. The resulting shock of the impact prevented Balian from bringing the sword back into position quickly. If this were a fight… I’d be dead he thought grimly. He repositioned himself back infront of the post and tried again, this time swinging from the opposite side. The result was largely the same. He went at the post for several more chimes, repeating the swing from either side. Sometimes the sword would find its mark, but the majority of the time it did not. The temperature was still relatively cool, however with his armour on and the efforts of the morning, beads of sweat were already trailing down his forehead and neck. Maybe if I swing like this... he swung from a lower angle ..No, they same blasted result. Can’t seem t’get the damn thing to do what I want. Balian switched up his attack; instead of swinging it from overhead, he now attempted to thrust the blade forward in a stab. He drew back his arms, the sword now parallel to the ground. He had to hold the hilt with both his hands in order to keep the weapon as steady as it good, however it still managed to waiver a good bit. He pushed his arms forward, aiming for the centre of the post however he was unable to hold it steady enough and the blade dropped. The attack ended in his blade sliding against the side of the post, instead of the point embedding itself in the rope and straw.

Balian let out cry and pulled the sword back, frustrated at his own inability. He had no idea that he was this bad with a sword. At this point he had stepped out of his stance and swung at the post furiously from the side, not really expecting to accomplish anything other than release his frustration on the post. Amazingly however, this time the swing connected; it even seemed half way decent! His ire was quickly replaced with excitement as he got back into place and attempted the swing again. He swung from the side, however the attack seemed to carry less strength, and the blades weight carried it downward. Balian let at a sigh and returned to his original position; sword out in front of him at chest level. By this point his arms, particularly his shoulders began to burn under the weight of the sword. Not one to give up however, he rose the weapon above his head and attacked from above, as if to cleave a man’s head. This time the sword was compliant, and the resulting swing was successful. This kept him motivated, and he was able to push past the burn that his arms felt as he continued to practice with his bastard sword. So focused was he, that he didn’t even notice that he had drawn an audience, that is until the man spoke.

[Antinous Training Grounds] How to Swing a Sword

Your Words I My Words I My Thoughts

“You’re new.” The statement startled Balian out of his concentration, causing him to jump slightly and drop the sword. He turned to see who had spoken and saw a knight standing to the side of him. He wore the plate armour that had become standard to the Knights, and it shone brightly as it reflected Syna’s light. He was taller than Balian, sporting a thin beard that outlined his face, which currently bore a disapproving look at the dropped sword. “Is it that obvious?” asked Balian guiltily. “Pick up your sword, and get in position”. Balain followed the man’s instructions, picking up the sword from off the ground and getting back into his original position. “You’ve held a sword before…”It was a statement, not a question, “but your stance is too brittle.” Balian held the position as the knight took a few steps around him, taking stock of what he saw. “Take a step back with your right foot, but keep the distance the same. That will let you add more power, as well as brace against the weight.” Immediately Balian did so, noticing how it was more comfortable now that it previously was. “Bend your elbows slightly more, loosen them up a bit. Now, swing.” Balian took a second to prepare himself before lifting the sword. He could tell the difference immediately. When he swung, he was able to add more strength to it by pushing off his back foot, and with his body twisting as a result of the stance, the swords path seemed more effortless. The post let out a solid thunk when the blade landed, this time hitting its intended target and sinking into the straw. “Better. Again.” His voice was stern, one to be obayed without question, yet it still carried the tone of some one who cared enough to teach. Elated, Balian pulled the sword out and resumed the new stance; sword perpendicular to the ground at his side. Once more he swung, and once more the blade landed where Balian wanted it to. “Good, now follow me.” The knight turned, and started walking, not even checking once to see if Balian was walking begin him. Not being one to disobey, Balian followed a few steps behind, with his sword still in hand. They walked for about half a chime, to edge of one of the clearings at which point the knight turned to Balian, who stopped a few paces behind.

“You carry a bastard sword, which can be usefull.” Began the knight “It will let you fight with a shield, or you can use both hands to add more strength to your attacks, but that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to use it. Practice your swing once more, except this time, instead of the post, imagine an enemy charging at you.” He stepped to the side to allow Balian ample room to practice. Balian assumed the stance he was just taught and held the sword out infront. It took some ticks, however soon enough a figure formed in his mind. A large man, grotesque in his features, his face snarling as Balian imagined him charging. He prepared his swing and aimed to hit the shoulder. With another cry, Balian swung. The sword arced downward at his imaginary target, using his back foot to add strength to it. The blade sunk at imaginary flesh and the figured vanished, but the sword continued downward with all its momentum. If it wasn’t for the position of his left foot, which allowed him to brace, he would have been left unbalance by the swing. As it were the blade still continued downward and bounced off the ground. The knight merely nodded “Strength alone isn’t enough.” Balian quickly recovered, “you also need control over the blade. Don’t just stop when you think you have hit the target, make sure to follow through with the swing.” Balian listened with rapt attention as the knight imparted his wisdom, “let me show you.” At that knight drew his own sword, a standard longsword if Balian had to guess, and get into a similar position. Then in a swift movement, he swung the blade downward. His movement was graceful, and it seemed effortless to Balian. The tip of the blade stopped a few inches short of the ground, and in the span of a breath he turned the end of his swing into a new one, this time from the side. The movement was so fluid that to Balian it seemed as if it were not two separate attacks but a single one. “With enough control, you can chain your attacks, and overwhelm your opponent” he said solemnly, before cracking a smile “but before then, you need to work on your swing."

Your Words I My Words I My Thoughts

Balian focused one the knight’s words as he prepared himself. Not just strength…also need control… He breathed in deep as he once more took up the position; right foot slightly back, shoulder width apart, sword held in both hands. His shoulder muscles were already aching from weight, but Balian was determined to get at least one good swing in under the knights direction. …control… he kept repeating to himself, inculcating the word into his brain.

His next movements were measured. His goal here was to keep his form rather than just swinging the sword. He raised the sword at an angle, the point of the blade pointing away from him. After a brief pause in order to brace his muscles, he swung down. This time he, at the protest of his muscles didn’t just let the sword fall. Adding some resistance to the swing, he found that he could more easily control the speed and path of the sword. He turned his body along the path of swing, pivoting off his back foot which gave him even further movement, until the blade rested a few inches above the ground. In current position, he realized that he could actually maneuver into a second swing. Trying his best to mimic the knight, he took a step forward with his right foot while at the same time turning his wrist and slashing the sword upward, this time pushing off his left foot. With a great cry he completed the swing, his shoulder and arm muscles now quivering from the effort. The weight of the sword plus the exertion of the day was finally too much and Balian had drop his arms. The sword now hung clutched in his right hand low, pointing towards the ground. Despite his weariness, a smile adorned his face.

Balian looked over at the knight, who offered an approving nod. “Not bad. You still need to work on your overall form, and you need to gain some strength. But at least, you seem to understand the basics and the importance of form.” Balian glowed at the praise. He knew that he had much work to do, but now at least he knew he was on the right track. He took one more deep breath and lifted the sword to put back into its scabbard, his muscles burning with the effort. In his enthusiasm and concentration, he had forgotten to introduce himself, and to ask for the knight’s name. After all, he had taken the time to teach something to Balian, he felt that he deserved that respect at least, not the least because he was also a knight.

“I thank you for you’re help, Ser knight.” He said bowing his head in respect. “I am Squire Martell, from the Outpost, and Sera Lin is my patron.” The knight bowed back in return. “Well met Squire Martell, I am Ser Quintyn.” He straightened his back and sheathed his own sword. He gave a smile to Balian, one that his father would aften give him after he managed to do something right. It was an approving smile. “I think I have seen Sera Lin training here.” He cocked his head as he gave some though to the matter. “Any who, I must be off to see what other squire needs help. Just remember what I told you and you should do fine. Take care, Squire Martell.” He bowed once more in farewell, and walked away to another section of the training grounds. Balian stood there for a second, watching him go, before he too began to make his way out of the training grounds, a satisfied smile decorating his young face.
