15-33 Summer, 514AV

Aran frowned, looking at his Ankhal. "You're certain that this is where I am meant to deliver these?" he asked, gesturing towards the bags that would be strapped to Anyalvis's saddlebags-- the bags contained scrolls and arrows, and Aran was not sure he wanted to know what the scrolls said. "Traveling to Kenash... I know it is the beginning of Summer, and we are not too far from the city, but I had thought we would travel closer if there were to be goods delivered to the city."

Sirot looked at Aran like the answer was stupidly obvious; it was a look that made Aran's hackles rise, although he tried to keep his expression neutral. He was already on shaky enough footing with his pavilion for his refusal to simply marry the first vaguely-interested girl, he did not need to make his standing any worse. "The need for these to be delivered did not arise until we had passed Kenash. Nykya said that these must be delivered as quickly as possible. Anyalvis is one of the fastest Striders we have-- you will take the job."

Aran briefly considered baring his teeth or at the least commenting on Sirot's presumptiousness, but he didn't dare. "Very well," he said stiffly. "I will pack my bags and gather the food. Urgency?"

"Not very, but the faster the better."

Aran nodded. He would push Anyalvis a bit faster than he normally would, then, but he would not exhaust his Strider. "We will leave shortly."

It didn't take long for Aran to buy his supplies, and he spent a few moments fussing with the arrangement of the bags, making sure that everything was securely strapped, before he mounted Anyalvis. Sirot was standing beside him, and Aran looked down at his Ankhal as he said, "Expect me back after the 30," he said, waiting for Sirot's nod before he nudged Anyalvis with his heels, encouraging the Strider to jog easily through Endrykas. It was early enough that Aran probably could have gotten away with cantering through the tent city, but he didn't want to take the chance. Once they were clear of the city, then Aran leaned low over Anyalvis's neck, holding himself in place with his knees, and murmured softly to the stallion, allowing the horse to stretch his legs into whatever gait he felt most comfortable with.

This was the part that Aran enjoyed the most about his job-- being alone on the grasslands, nothing but him, Anyalvis, and the wind for as far as he could see. Aran had never been a sociable person, much preferring the company of horses to that of his fellow humans; horses never lied, never misled. Horses were honest, and one did not have to sift through their actions for ulterior motives if one knew how to read the language of horses. A flick of an ear could convey entire sentences, the baring of teeth could state a warning more clearly than any words. To horses, things were fairly clear-cut, and Aran wished that humans could be the same. But no, humans lied, cheated, stole, seduced, and murdered to obtain their goals. Sometimes Aran thought that perhaps humans were the most dangerous creatures on Mizahar, not the glassbeaks, Zith, or any other predator.

Horse and rider continued their journey, Aran trusting Anyalvis to read the terrain and not trip and fall-- that would hurt both of them severely, and Aran did not have sufficient knowledge to deal with anything beyond cuts. Anyalvis was an experienced traveler, however, and Aran trusted him. The horse would not let him fall.

The first night, Aran and Anyalvis camped out next to a stream; Aran set up his tent and then quickly built a fire, boiling a pot of water to begin making a stew from his rations. The Drykas didn't bother with hobbling his Strider; the stallion would not wander too far, and would bed down beside Aran's tent. Aran made certain that the wind would not blow his fire into the grass-- he didn't fancy trying to put out a bushfire in the dry Summer grass-- before he started scouting around for some fresh berries to add to his meal. It never hurt to save a little bit of rations where he could. Aran managed to find some berries, and after a few moments of internal debate, the Drykas made what was possibly the stupidest decision of his life-- he ate one.

Of course, he promptly felt incredibly stupid when he recognized the taste of juniper berries, and rolled his eyes at himself. Really, he should have remembered to crush the berries-- juniper had a very distinctive smell, like resin, when crushed. Gathering some more berries, Aran was careful to keep from crushing them just yet-- if he dried them out, he could add them to his meat to give it more flavor.

After he ate, Aran sent a prayer to Zulrav for fast and safe travel the next day before he settled down to sleep after checking one last time on Anyalvis and banking his fire so that there would be embers for him in the morning.

the next several days continued in much the same way, until at last Aran arrived in Kenash. He had been told that he would be met just outside the city by the man who was going to accept the delivery and give Aran the note that confirmed the receipt of his delivery. Aran and Anyalvis slowed to a walk as they approached the delivery point, and when Anyalvis started walking tensely rather than with his usual loose stride, Aran picked up on it. Something was not right.

Still, Aran had a job to do; he continued onward. Just outside of the city, Aran came upon three men; two of them had bows trained on him as he approached, and the other wore a large sword strapped to his side. Aran himself had his shortbow, but he didn't draw it, opting instead to approach with his hands in the air, using only his knees to guide Anyalvis. "I'm delivering something," he called in Common, hoping that these men spoke Common. "I do not wish to fight."

"Dismount," the one with the sword answered. "And bring the bags."

Aran hesitated for only long enough to ask, "Are you Haldeer?" and receive a nod in response. Then he dismounted and brought the bags with the scrolls and arrows with him, Anyalvis following a few steps behind him.

The bags exchanged hands, and as the man passed over the receipt note, he asked, "Why is there no bows in this delivery?"

Aran shrugged. "I do not know. I was told merely to deliver these bags. I have no interest in what they contain."

"Really? Because I do. Tell whoever gave you these bags that we expect the bows as well." The man had a hard look in his eyes that Aran did not like; even though Aran was taller than the other human, Aran felt vaguely intimidated, no least because the other man was much better armed than he was.

"I will make sure to do that," Aran said, backing up a step and mounting Anyalvis. As he turned, Aran caught a flash of movement from one of the men with bows-- he was drawing his arrow, and Aran decided that pride really had no place in this situation: He urged Anyalvis into the fastest gallop the Strider could manage.

It took Aran another nine days to reach Endrykas. During that time, he had been thinking over what had happened, wondering what, exactly, those scrolls had contained-- and why was it so imperative for those men to have Drykas-made bows as well? The implications weren't anything good, but unfortunately, Aran did not have the knowledge or skills necessary to try to figure everything out. As such, he elected to just leave them be for now-- he was paid to deliver the goods, nothing else.

When Aran re-entered Endrykas, however, he took only long enough to take care of Anyalvis, ensuring that the stallion hadn't strained anything. The claybank horse wasn't as young as he'd used to be, and while Striders were hardy creatures, Aran still worried. After he was certain that Anyalvis was all right, the Drykas sought out his Ankhal. Cornering Sirot outside of their tent, he said, "You will not arrange any more jobs for me. If someone has things they want me to deliver, then you will tell them to speak to me. Do I make myself clear?"

Sirot looked taken aback for a moment before outrage took over his expression. "You dare--"

"I dare to keep myself and my horse safe," Aran interrupted, glaring at his Ankhal. "I am no child, Father. I can conduct my own business. Should you force me, I will move out. Would you care to explain why your son moves out to his own Pavilion with only a slave and no wife?"

Aran could tell from Sirot's expression that no, no the other man would not care to explain why that happened. The younger Drykas didn't stick around for the argument to continue, instead ducking inside of the tent, pressing a quick kiss to his mother's hair and then retreating to his cot. There would be Hell to pay later for his insolence, Aran knew, but at the moment he could not care about much beyond the fact that he and Anyalvis could have very easily been hurt by the men who'd taken the goods.

OOCI'm not entirely certain where I'm going with this-- mostly I just figured that there would be factions out there who would want weapons for one thing or another, and I just picked a city with a reasonable travel time from the Endrykas summer grounds. I think I'll elaborate a bit more on this in my second job thread.

Notes

An interesting encounter! I look forward to the sequel.

I did not award Riding XP because Aran is Competent, and for what is described here, not enough detail was presented to progress in skill. I think the rest of the award should be pretty self-evident. One note: When you add Wilderness Survival to your skill list, be sure to mention Aran's primary environment (plains) somewhere.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your grade, please PM me. Also, please edit your request to show this thread has been graded.
