Physical Information

  • Age: 217
  • Race: Akalak
  • Gender: Male
  • Height: 7'5"
  • Weight: 300 lbs
Injuries and Scars

Appearance

As is the case with the totality of his species, Dor'gen is a rather intimidating sight to behold. Towering at well over seven feet, the Akalak is characterized by a finely sculpted physique; honed over decades of training. His age, amounting to just over two centuries, is reflected by the silver locks of hair which cascade freely down his back. This hue also defines his eyes: which are dual pools of shimmering silver. Occasionally, he will add trinkets in the form of bones or beads into his locks; with this being a common trend of fashion amongst his Myrian fellows. As a whole, Dor'gen is of an incredibly dark skin pigmentation of purple hue. However, this color is nearly deep enough to be confused with ebony at a glance. Next to his pigmentation, one of the most striking features about Dor'gen is the number of scars which characterize his body. From his face to his torso, he wears the marks of battles past with immense pride.

In terms of clothing, Dor'gen's "fashion sense" is identical to that of the Myrian people. Like any warrior, he owns and wears a suit of leather armor. However, depending upon the season, he might go bare-chested or incorporate a fur-trim cloak into his attire.

Personality

Being that Dor'gen was born leagues away from the homeland of his species, his characteristics are vastly different than that of the average Akalak. Most notably, Dor'gen's upbringing in the midst of a matriarchal society instilled in him an enormous respect of the female gender. Unlike the native occupants of Riverfall, he views women as more than simply a means of continuing his species. Instead, he highly respects and reveres them; for he has learned his place in Taloban society over the course of two centuries.

Life as a Myrian-raised Akalak was challenging, but it also instilled in him the spirit of a warrior. While in his youth, his fervor far surpassed savergery, time and age have afforded him wisdom and calm. Of course, it goes without saying that he would gladly raise his sword in the defense of his home, people, and Goddess; and that he has not abandoned the warlike tendencies of his people. However, he does not prowl the world seeking conflict with all that moves. In fact, Dor'gen lives by an unspoken code of sorts: one defined by personal honor, integrity, and the utilization of common sense. What's more, he looks upon the younger generations with the eyes of a mentor and protector; and actively seeks the steer the troubled to a sound path.

Of course, that is not to say that Dor'gen is a saint. At times, he is passionate, jovial, and prone to drink just a touch too much. He is brave and may sometimes throw all caution to the wind whilst succumbing to anger. Indeed, he is a stark contrast to most Akalaks...and the darker sibling that shares his mind and body. Known as Goa, this "dark" manifestation is the Leth to his Syna. Where Dor'gen is passionate, Goa is calm. Where Dor'gen is explosive, Goa is level-headed. Where Dor'gen favors the mundane, Goa favors the Arcane. Where Dor'gen quick to anger, Goa is slow to enrage. Although as vastly different as night and day, the two siblings share a common respect and friendship that has grown over centuries. In fact, Dor'gen has no qualms about relinquishing dominance of the body to his sibling on the regular; especially during times of danger or combat.

Beliefs

Although Dor'gen pays homage to those deities often worshipped by the Myrians, his primary focus is reserved for the Goddess-Queen. Having spent two centuries in the bosom of Taloba, he has developed a powerful devotion to the warrior that is the definition of piety. All that he does is in the pursuit of bringing glory to her name and in the hopes of being pleasing in her sight. Despite the fact that Dor'gen is not among her full-fledged children, he has adopted the worship of Myri with the same diligence and passion as any Myrian. To date, the vast majority of his prayers are devoted solely to the Goddess-Queen; with a respectable sum being devoted to the commonly praised deities of Taloba and his own ancestors.

Likewise, Goa shares in the same passionate worship of Myri...but has devoted most of his heart to the worship of Leth. Being that he is considered the "darker" sibling, Goa was naturally attracted to the moon deity since the moment of his emergence. His affection of the arcane and things requiring deep pondering over sheer force only strengthened his budding adoration towards the god. Over time, has come to place Leth second in his heart, only inches behind the Goddess-Queen; for he eptiomizes all that he cherishes.

Dor'gen of the Tempered Steel

History

Centuries ago, when Dor'gen was but a glimmer in his sire's eye, a duo was formed in the midst of dire circumstances. Two sellswords became embroiled in a job that saw their backs up against the wall; and only through working together did they evade the clutches of death. Thus began a partnership, first out of necessity but soon out of mutual respect and friendship. These two, unlikely comrades eventually came to rely upon one another in the matters of the heart, falling deeply in love. The romance they shared was not exactly the definition of conventional, for affection was often given in the midst of battle! However, the duo cared for and protected each other for several years...yet change came in the form of a surprise.

Kisala, a Myrian of the Tempered Steel, began to feel...off. Sick, even; and Jaster, her beloved Akalak, had minimal clue what to do. Eventually, it dawned on them that they had been blessed with a child; and thus a serious discussion took place. The life of travel and blood that they led was no place for a pregnancy, let alone a child; that much was absolutely certain. However, when it came to where to settle down with their newly formed family, tensions flared. Jaster insisted that they settle in Riverfall, where their child would be fully embraced by the Riverian culture; yet Kisala was adamant upon returning home and having her child born in the midst of her kin. Despite the fact that there was no question that their child would be treated differently in Taloba, she was hellbent on returning home...for she hoped that maybe, just maybe, they might accept him just a shred.

Ultimately, Jaster relented; but only after making a hefty deal. At the vital points in their unborn child's life, where Akalak Rites of Passage were to take place, he would be permitted to take their child to Riverfall to participate. Having this accord, the pair made the journey to Taloba...where the welcome was significantly less than welcome. From the instant that he entered the city, Jaster was treated like dirt. In fact, he had spears and swords thrust into his face upon setting foot in the city! Sure, the Myrians were not fond of outsiders...but this surpassed all expectations! However, despite his own personal treatment, Jaster was content to stay in the company of his Kisala and their unborn child. For him, all the cold glances and muttered insults were worth being amongst his newly formed family.

When the fateful day arrived, Dor'gen was born into the Tempered Steel Clan. However, unlike most births, there was not tremendous joy that permeated the entire Clan...but instead the silence of curiosity. Most present were simply there in order to see what sort of spawn the monstrous Jaster had placed inside Kisala, and to their surprise it was purple! Regardless, the newborn Akalak was afforded the rites of his people and ultimately "chose" the Bastard Sword through the first "ceremony" undertaken by his clan. Having only been three days' old at the time, his hand was dipped in blood and held over a variety of weapons. When he stirred, the droplets of blood landed upon a Bastard Sword. This came as an immense source of pride to his mother, for she was known amongst her kin for her prowess with the blade.

Growing up, Dor'gen knew only the love of his parents...and the coldness of his "kin". He was not especially well liked in the whole of Myrian society, but because he was raised to do his part, life was not too difficult. His earliest years were spent being trained at the feet of his parents and grandmother; who took the time to capture his curiosity through her Malediction. Kisala imparted to her son her prowess with a blade and filled him with the culture that surrounded him. She told him of the triumphs of Myri, the goddess for whom her people were named, and encouraged him to cultivate his instincts. He was to be a weapon, forged to be wielded by the capable hands of their goddess...Yet, Jaster offered a different perspective.

He instilled discipline and integrity within his son; qualities upon which Akalak culture was founded upon. Throughout their training sessions and talks, he showed his son a different way of thinking...one where he was accepted and not subject to cold glances. One where he would be considered an esteemed equal should he prove himself. These teachings would become more than just words when Dor'gen reached the age of twelve. This marked the year that his "darker" self manifested...and also was the first time that Dor'gen was taken out of his Taloban home. True to their agreement, Kisala allowed Jaster to take Dor'gen to a trip to Riverfall so that he might participate in the first of his Akalak rites. This called for him to put all of his training to the test in order to fell a Glassbeak alongside Akalaks of his age.

Upon arrival, Dor'gen was shocked to see the warm reception afforded to him. He was more than simply an outsider to the Riverians...he was one of their own. Sure, his Tukant was broken and he was not exactly sociable; but the Akalak he came upon showed him courtesy, kindness, and above all else, acceptance. When the time came for the Glassbeak hunt, Dor'gen did his absolute best and succeeded in bringing down the beast alongside his fellows. For his exceptional performance, and scoring the killing blow, he was permitted to claim a trophy off of the beast. He chose its talons, for they had left a nasty cut upon his chest...which he would wear with pride from that point forward.

There was reluctance when the time came for Dor'gen and his sire to return back to Taloba, but Jaster promised his son that they would return someday. Heartened by this, the young Akalak proceeded through the next few years with a pep in his step; for he eagerly awaited the next time he could go to Riverfall. However, before this opportunity would present itself, he had to triumph over the tests of his own Clan. Upon reaching sixteen years of age, he was blindfolded and marched out into the heart of the jungle...where he was then abandoned with the most basic tools. His mission was to navigate his way back to Taloba within two days; lest he bring immense shame upon himself. By the skin of his teeth, Dor'gen managed to reach the city in time.

'Twas from this point that the young Akalak began his mandatory service within the Taloban Army...and quickly found himself surprised by what he saw and felt. Despite being considered lesser, despite being of a different birth, there was a camaraderie between Myri's soldiers that surpassed his origins. His duty was to defend them, just as much as it was to defend Taloba; and in vice-versa. This was the catalyst that shook Dor'gen from the "clutches" of his Akalak heritage and set him firmly on the path of becoming a weapon for the will of Myri. When his mandatory service was done, Dor'gen immediately continued his time within the service; pausing only to fulfill the second, and final rite of passage demanded by his father's culture.

This time, he did it not because he wanted to...but because it was the sole desire of his sire.

Their voyage to Riverfall this time was not as mirthful as years prior, for Dor'gen was now a entering his third decade of life and had all but become a savage soldier. He was leaps and bounds away from what a typical Akalak resembled...and Jaster blamed himself. He believed that he failed as a father to impart his values into his son; but at least took heart in the fact that he managed to bring him through both rites of passage. Immediately prior to the Zith Hunt, Dor'gen underwent the taxing process of having a Lakan forged before venturing out into the Sea of Grass. There, he patiently stalked the foreign grasses until he came upon his prey...The Zith did not anticipate facing a wild, practically feral Akalak; and was torn to shreds because of it.

The battle was far from easy and left Dor'gen with plenty of new scars...but when it was all said and done, he immediately returned home to Taloba. Jaster, defeated, decided to tarry in Riverfall; where he remained until the day of his passing.

Upon returning to Taloba, Dor'gen immediately resumed service within the Taloban Army. He fought in the name of his goddess and imparted what knowledge he possessed to the younglings which entered after him. Even after his mother and immediate kin passed on, Dor'gen remained a member of the city's armed forces. Change came solely through something that Dor'gen did not even realize: loneliness. Sure, he felt as accepted as he would ever get within the Army, but that did not stop the memories of his childhood from plaguing his mind. His parents were happiness and shared a love that had cultivated him...and it left a lasting impression upon him. Dor'gen began to crave what his parents had: the love and acceptance of another.

Yet he knew he would never receive that at the hands of his fellow Myrians.

Shortly after passing the threshold of his second century of life, Dor'gen assembled what little belongings he owned and made a reluctant departure from Taloba. His intention and promise was to return to his home someday...but this time, in the same manner as his parents before him. This time, he hoped to not be alone.

Heirloom

ImageCenturies ago, long before Dor'gen had lived past his first half century, his sire attempted to impart in him the ways of the Akalak race. To this end, he briefly took his son out of the bosom of Taloba and introduced him to Riverfall: home of their species. Being that Dor'gen was of age, his father both pressed and encouraged him to take part in the first Rite of Passage which characterized their culture. With minimal choice in the matter, he participated and ultimately succeeded in felling a Glassbeak alongside his peers. In order to commemorate this momentous occasion, Dor'gen's sire claimed the talons from the fallen beast and bound them together in an impressive display of craftsmanship. To date, Dor'gen still wears this necklace; not as a reflection of his Akalak heritage, but as a mark of pride for felling such a beast at such a young age.

Prowess I (Received: Starting)
Dor'gen received his first Gnosis mark directly from his patron deity: Myri. Upon successfully completing his Trial, he was anointed with the first mark of Prowess in lieu of contributing to and drinking from the Blood Chalice. Located upon his forearm, the Gnosis itself appears to be in a constant, waving motion. Furthermore, it bears the resemblance of a Myrian warrior garbed for battle. The first mark of Prowess bestows upon Dor'gen enhanced speed; especially in the context of weapon utilization and general combat. Personally, this mark is of immense value to Dor'gen; for it represents that he is a child of Myri...but is also a constant reminder that he will never be fully accepted within Myrian society.
Gnosis Story (Prowess) :
Winter 26, 283 AV

He had done it.

Despite the shallow looks and demeaning slurs. Despite the doubt and feeling alone. Despite the very challenge in itself...Dor'gen had succeeded in his Trial. As a rite of passage, each and every child of Myrian blood is presented with a trial when coming of age. For those of the Tempered Steel, this meant being left alone several miles away from Taloba. The expectation was a swift return within two days, lest shame be brought down upon the individual's head. Many had doubted that the half-breed would be able to accomplish this task...and there were even those who hoped that the Jungle would eat him alive...yet on the afternoon of the second day, Dor'gen emerged from the brush. He was battered, cut, and bruised in several places, yet he had arrived before nightfall.

He had done it!

Staggering forward, the young Akalak was, strangely enough, received with open arms by his Clan. There were smiles all about, occasional pats on the back, and even an aunt who placed a kiss upon his brow. He was afforded a few moments of recovery before the most momentous occasion of his life was set to begin: the Blooding. All those who successfully completed their trial were to undertake this ritual that forever marked them as amongst Myri's children. For years, Dor'gen had hoped that contributing to the Blood Chalice and drinking from its depths would be that which inspired acceptance by his people. After all, he had known nothing but lonliness for all the years of his life...but perhaps this would be the key in changing it all.

Having consumed a few bites of food and several heaping mouthfuls of water, Dor'gen was hoisted to his feet by those near. Surrounded by his clan, he walked in a procession of sorts into Taloba proper; where he was promptly escorted to the temple. Dor'gen had been here many times before, yet not in this capacity. As he gazed at the stairs leading up the terraced pyramid, a flood of butterflies assaulted his stomach. However, despite the onset of nerves, Dor'gen steeled himself forward. He half expected his clansmen to keep in step with him as he ascended the steps...yet to his surprise, he ascended them alone. Regardless, he set his gaze upon the top and continued along until there were no longer any more steps to climb.

At once, he was greeted by the sight of several torches dotting the walls: each revealing a portion of the mural detailing the history of Taloba. Swallowing, he stepped forward whilst returning his attention straight before him. There was an alter of sorts, upon which stood the unmistakable form of the Chalice...and behind it was a throne. In that moment, the horde of butterflies seemed only to multiply; for the silver eyes of the Akalak met those of the Goddess-Queen. There were no words that could accurately describe the tsunami of emotion that struck the young man. Yet as he stared, his body lowered out of reverence. In silence, he knelt before Myri and did not move until she addressed him.

"Rise Dor'gen, son of Kisala."

The sheer power of her voice caused the Akalak's heart to quicken to a thunderous pace. However, despite how nervous he was...despite how sweaty his palms were becoming...Dor'gen obediently stood to his feet. Myri joined him in this motion and ascended from her throne. With long strides filled with purpose, the Goddess crossed the room until she stood only a pace away from the Akalak. "I have been watching since the day you were born." she began, extending her swordhand. Her fingertips lifted his chin until her gaze locked upon his own; an act that caused his heart to thud away even faster. "Within you is my blood, yet it has been tainted by the blood of your sire. Such is unfit to be added to the Chalice."

In that instant, Dor'gen's heart sank. His dreams of finally standing as an equal amongst the Myrians...of being accepted...all hinged upon taking a sip from the Chalice. He had come so far, and now it was literally within a few paces' reach...but his blood was unworthy. He was unworthy...Even the goddess thought so. If not for her fingertips holding his chin aloft, Dor'gen would have lowered his head in shame. Myri, however, was not done. "However, despite being a halfling, you have lived and bled in my name. Your piety has never been called into question, nor your loyalty to your Clan." she began. "Even now, you have completed your Trial and brought honor to the Tempered Steel...All of this has led me to have a single question for you."

Despite feeling shaken to the very core, Dor'gen nodded slightly and managed to say: "Yes, my Queen?" Without a moment's hesitation, the deity began once more. "I know that you have tread upon the shores of Riverfall and seen the people that you resemble. I know that you have witnessed a world ruled by the hands of men who are warriors like yourself. There, you would find acceptance...So I ask, would you cast that chance away? Would you sacrifice a life amongst the people of your father and live as one of my children?" Surprise washed over the young man's face in that instant...and he began to carefully consider the answer to this question. In truth, he had thought about what life with his father's people would be like...

...But at the end of the day, this was all he knew. At the end of the day, he was a child of the Tempered Steel; appearance be damned! "Yes!" he all but yelled. "I would cast that chance aside gladly! Taloba is my home and these are my family! For you I shall fight and die. For you I shall live! This I swear, upon my life!" Once the words escaped him, Myri's fingers released his chin from their touch. For a moment, the Akalak sincerely thought that he had...disappointed Myri somehow; for a quiet had befallen the deity. However, this silence was broken when her touch was felt upon his right forearm. Warmth bled from her hand and infected the surface of his skin, then spread deep into his arm.

The sensation was the definition of strange, yet it did not frighten Dor'gen at all. He simply stood fast and looked upon his Goddess, who in turn looked down upon him. "Then live, son of Kisala, in my name. Bear my mark and spill the blood of my enemies. Stand amongst my children and bring glory to my name!" With that...the warmth receded and the deity retracted her hand. She stepped back and allowed Dor'gen a moment to look upon her handiwork. There, upon his arm, now resided a mark...one that would set him apart as a servant of Myri forevermore. "Now go. Celebrate. For this day is one to be remembered." she said, turning about to return to her throne.

"Yes my Queen." Dor'gen began, rendering a bow. "And thank you."
