Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

The Captain and the Cards

Eselle set the kettle over the stove to boil. She was making tea for Dandi while she worked on a new deck of Tarot cards. Last the Konti had seen the Priestess was working on the suit of Wands. Without any prompting she felt today would be a good day, if only because wands were the topic of the day. The suit wands was generally a happy suit, one that inspired contemplation. Eselle toed back down the stairs to freshen the display case while she waited for the water to boil.

The Inner Eye was quiet yet, even the early morning sun was blocked by curtains giving the shop the eternal glow is mysticism. Eselle hadn’t worked here long but she found the peace enjoyable and the work not strenuous in the least. She slide the dust rag over the wood, there was no noticeable dirt but now there wouldn’t be next week either. The seer looked down over the hand-painted decks and the lovingly card gem runestones. They were beautiful in a way she had not seen on Mura, they style was so vibrant. There was an ephemeral beauty to the Konti and that translated into their art in Eselle’s opinion. The pastels were enchanting and haunting; a style all their own. These cards though, were wild and fierce, their colors splashed and clashing against each other. There was personality to them and perhaps someday Eselle would purchase one of Dandi’s decks to have a deck for different occasions. She smiled and headed back up the steps.

The Konti made a point of not dawdling in her employer’s living area, it wasn’t her business and she didn’t snoop. The only time she came up here is when the Priestess was hard at work and required refreshment or lunch. Eselle was an assistant and she had no problem with that. She lacked the artist abilities of her employer and had no experience with palm or crystal ball reading. She doubted either would be an avenue she would explore soon. With her tarot card reading growing in strength and understanding, she had begun to look towards two other sources of fortune; Augury and tea leaf reading. She had only began to notice omens and symbols in these two sources recently and had been working off instinct. In one case, the flight of birds had led her to meet the Benshiran man Hirem who had indeed needed her aid. There was something within these two sources to augment her fortune telling, of that she was certain but she had not yet found any resources to further her understanding.

Tiny fragments of tea escaped the silken bags as she placed them into the cups of boiling water she had poured. She had never heard of people sewing the tea into little silk pouches before but it was certainly easier than using a cloth to block the leaves. Not to the threading could be pulled out of one corner of the little pouch, emptied and clean so it could be used again. Eselle found the tiny floating fragments exciting, She would get another chance to read the tea leaves, to expand on her knowledge of the new art.

She carried the cups down stairs,, one for each them. As she took dainty steps to avoid undue noise and spilling the tea, she heard of the muffled noises of the outside world a stranger’s voice. A customer had come into the Inner Eye for a reading.

The Captain and the Cards

Her steps tapped faster, failing to hide her excitement. Dandi had asked her to take any readings today that were not of extreme significance. This was her chance.

She smiled demurely at the customer, it was a man. Her had dirty blonde hair and eyes bluer than her own. She could smell the sea air and sweat from the stairway. A sailor beyond a shadow of a doubt, and if he could afford to buy a fortune then likely a captain. She set one cup of tea by Dandi and cupped the other in her palm.

The seafarer, perhaps Svefra, was already watching her. His common was little better than her own but they would manage. “The Seer says you will give me the best fortune today.” He said, his voice gravelly like an old injury had never healed properly.

Eselle nodded, “Please, follow me. Let us see what the cards have for you.” The konti lead the man back towards the entry room and the sitting alcove. This was where fortunes were told in the Inner Eye. It was not her first fortune here but it was one of the first. Gently she placed her tea out of the way. She already had her cards near at hand, stowed away in the alcove for elegant access. At this distance she could feel the Captain’s desire for answers, it was strong but by no means dire. He sought advice, was her guess. Her hands ran over the cards, slowly shuffling them reverently. “What is it that you seek to know, Sir…?”

The Svefra looked at her briefly, “I am Shelden, I want to know the best cargo to take to Alvadas this Fall.”

Eselle nodded, “Very well Shelden.” She finished shuffling and offered him the deck to cut it. After he had done so she lifted it back into her hands and dealt out five cards. They were not perfectly aligned but still in a semblance of a line. It was on purpose. Just as symbolic as the images on the cards was the spread. How the cards were arrayed and read could mean many different things even though it was only the same five cards. “With this spread we will see the different options for your voyage.” She reached out to flip the first card.
