Character Concept


 
General
Ornea is Inarta; and an Artisan. She is in her thirties and has two children who have moved to the youth section of Mount Inarta for traditional Inarta upbringing, away from the parents.

In fall 514 AV she moved from Wind Reach to Lhavit. She aims to deal with her addiction to magic and start a new life as crafter. She rented the spatious attic room at Solar Wind Apartments and found a job in the highly interesting Lucis and Lucis. Now she works as metalsmith and becomes more and more involved in the brilliant inventor Edward Lucis' visionary projects. Threaths, trouble and obstacles has however already started to brew.

She also hopes to visit Wind Reach once in a while, and maybe also meet some of her old friends and aquaintances from Wind Reach if they visit Lhavit.


 
Interests
Like most people, Ornea also likes to learn to know other people and expand her social circles. She want's to stay in touch with people she knows in Wind Reach by meeting them when she goes there or when they are in Lhavit, and by letters.

For a start her main interest is to settle into Lhavit and establish herself and belong to the society there as far as it's possible.

Ornea likes to create things and is interested in crafting and art. She also likes intellectual topics.

Strenghts
Stamina: Inartan Mindset of Toughness - Ornea grew up in Wind Reach. She is used to soldier on under taxing conditions sometimes, and is tough, hardy and enduring. She will not easily be conquered by circumstances like physical hardships and hard work, periods of starvation, crowded places, danger and threats around, shut in places, strict and rigid hierarchies with limited roles and little room for individual freedom.

Loyalty and solidarity
- Brought up in the Inartan society in Wind Reach, the importance of loyalty with the people she belongs with is deeply ingrained in Ornea’s soul. It’s important to her to stand by her friends and support the ones that support her. Cooperation and concerted efforts for the benefit of all in a team is important to her. Once you are counted as in same community as her she is totally loyal and you can count on her to stand by you.

Straightforward and honest
- (This can also be a weakness as in “Brutally blunt and undiplomatic”) The Inarta are known for being straightforward and speaking their opinion. Ornea acts like this, mostly. And when dealing with other Inarta it’s perfect, as they expect and prefer this way of behaving. The same goes for other people with same preferences.

Basically friendly and good humored
- Like so many other Inarta her attitude to life is positive and she isn’t prone to get depressed by hardships. Ornea is hearty and stays on the sunny side of life, puts in effort and tries to solve problems and isn’t whiney.

Can speak Nari - Ornea is fluent in this complicated language which is very hard to learn for people who aren’t from Wind Reach. This gives her a considerable advantage when she is in Wind Reach and when she meets Inarta in other places.

Good at common - Due to constant education in common, by a Lhavitian woman working in Wind Reach these during Ornea's yasi years, she had the opportunity to learn common at more than just the simplest basic level. She could also practice the common during visits in Lhavit when she was grown up and thus she got a good start with the language at early age and is able to improve it furhter when she is living in Lhavit.


 
Flaws
Permanent overgiving injuries - Having overused fire reimancy, Ornea has permanent overgiving injuries in form of oversensitivity - she will overgive more than average and is hardly able to use magic, bar very sparsely and with nearly immediate light overgiving symptoms. The lighter symptomes will be quite instant and are similiar to allergy reactions to something one is oversensitive to. Medium symptomes are a higher than average risk, as she has alreasy had one long period of time when she suffered from altered mental states, delirium, dream-like experiences, convulsions and epilepsy.

Addiction to magic
- This doesn’t stop her from feeling the constant temptation of the magic that has become her drug, the “Sweet Whisper”. The overuse was major. But she is still a wizard and she still feels an overwhelming desire for the enticing prospect of discovering more, knowing more, crafting more. Forced to abstain from personal magic, Ornea turns to the comfort and inner development of meditation and delves into art and crafting. At longer term perhaps also into new forms of magic that aren't personal.

Compassion is conditional
- Ornea has a pretty unforgiving attitude to herself as well as others and is a true believer in the Inarta view on human value as defined by how important they are for the society and it's survival. This stern attitude can make people from other cultures find Ornea merciless and void of compassion for people in distress. And this is also true, if people have caused their own situation by being slackers or criminals. She can be compassionate and helpful too, but this is if people are innocent victims of something outside their control, in particular if they have sacrificed themselves for a family, team or faction.

Caste thinking - The chain of command is clear and crisp in Wind Reach. The caste mentality makes Ornea prone to divide people up depending on their jobs. She can tend to somewhat uncritically obey orders from people who seems to have higher rank in the Inarta way of thinking, and expect obedience from those she thinks of as lower rank people. This works out excellent in Wind Reach of course. But it can sometimes cause trouble in other places.

Volatile Inarta temperament
- Ornea has the whole fiery temperament of the Inarta and can be quick to get angry once in a while. This is however balanced and dampened by her practicing meditation, which can help her compose when she doesn’t want to hurt others. This depends on the situation, how serious the issue is, and the people she is interacting with.


 
Artisan
Ornea's main profession is metalsmithing. She is aiming to develop as artisan by adding knowledge in crafts and arts that supports this. This can be direct things like like carving, drawing, painting. But it can aslo be more intellectual things which she can use as inspiration for new items to design and craft. Gadgeteering is also a possibility. Nature can give her inspiration too, and so on.


 
Wizard
Years 503 AV to 514 AV ; Novice fire reimancer
The Reimancer can only use one element, in Ornea's case fire. Res production is rather slow, and control is limited; Res can only be controlled within a couple arm's lengths of the caster, though the fire can be thrown farther than this.

Special limitations for Ornea: Oversensitivity
After an overuse of magic in winter 513 AV she experienced a long time of medium overgiving, in form of altered mental states, delirium, dream-like experiences, convulsions and epilepsy. As a permanent consequence she is now more than average sensitive to overgiving and will be cautious with using reimancy. There will be no tons of great balls of fire ... instead one of Ornea's challenges is to strive for self-control and abstain from using magic if it's not absolutely necessary.


Character History; Birth to Summer 514 AV

 
Child age 0-7
Ornea was born Day 46 of Winter 483 AV, as the daughter of an avora glassmaster in her early forties, Mereth. Ornea was a single child, which is unusal among the Inarta who mostly. This was maybe because of the mother’s age.

It’s unknown who exactly fathered her. But Mereth was pretty biased about race and had kept exclusively to Inarta when she picked her lovers (chiet, mostly). So she knew for sure that Ornea is pure Inarta. Until age eight Ornea stayed with her mother. This his meant she was often watching the avora working and learnt much about working moral and glass in passing by. Her great interest and fascination for the craft made her mother think the girl’s special feeling for fire meant her daughter might follow in her footsteps and become a glass master too. This would however not happen, but it was one of Mereth’s favorite daydreams when the girl was small. She was proud of the girl, who would turn out to be her last child, and gave her lots of time and attention.

Ornea returned the love in children’s unconditional and unquestioning way; this forged a stronger bond than usual with her parent, for Inarta standards. This strong and true affection from early childhood, and the safety it made her feel, gave Ornea a basic mental strength, stability and empathy that would become a main asset for her during her whole life.


 
Youth age 8-15
At age eight, Ornea like all other Inarta children, went to live in the youth section of the city under the supervision of commoners, in order to learn to be independent. Classes intensified and Ornea learnt many things. Temperamental like many Inarta she was involved in quite many fights with other children. But she also found the ones who liked and loved her and made close friends with them.

Little Ornea performed well in training and in academic studies. Her mother, Mereth, got her hopes up and was expecting to take her own daughter as glassworker apprentice. This parental dream didn’t come true though. Albeit Ornea was very interested in all sorts of art and crafting and definitely showed talent for it, she had more talent for metalsmithing than for glassworking. Also, it was believed that Ornea might eventually be reimancer material,as her longstanding interest in everything that had with fire to do started to include a passionate interest in intellectual and spiritual aspects.

At age 15 she was assigned to the avora caste, but instead of being trained as glass artisan, she became the apprentice of a metalsmith and started to learn this craft. Metalsmithing became Ornea's profession.

But she was also taken on by and elderly female wizard named Ritva, in order to find out of the girl could eventually become useful as wizard. She started to study fire reimancy. This wasn't going fast and in the start it seemed to have little importance in her life. But later on it would affect and change her life much more than she could even guess at.


 
Teens age 15-20
Ornea was now a member of the second highest cast of the Inarta, the artisans, but she had years to go to develop future mastery in her profession. She worked hard put in enormous effort, under guidance of her master. This did however not stop Ornea from learning a few things about crafts and art too, when she could. Much of her leisure time went into this.

She was energetic, dynamic and active. Ornea did lots of things during these years, though the professional life was very much in focus. It was a time of intense expansion and learning.

When it came to magic, there were intellectual studies and meditation training to do before the reimancy initiation. Her master, Ritva, was of the opinion that a wizard should have all the theory in place and understand what she is doing before initiation. In addition she said that she wasn’t going to put dangerous weapons in the hands of a temperamental young girl , so Ornea had to wait until she was considered mature enough to handle the responsibility.

The reimancy initiation finally took place in year 503 AV, when Ornea was twenty years old. This all seemed very sensible and well planned; the hatch was that the elderly Ritva didn’t live long after this and the new fresh reimancer was now free to explore and develop her new abilities her own way.

This was done with more enthusiasm than caution. Ornea focused on magic only and neglected and postponed meditation. Her ability to use magic didn't develop much, as she didn't have a teacher anymore; instead of progressing the ability to use magic, her use of it progressed addiction. And being an addict, Ornea didn't want to be stopped from using magic ineffectively but frequently. She didn't seek a new teacher, but dabbled with it on her own instead. This was mostly when other's weren't watching. The magic that had been meant to be an asset would instead become like a curse to her.


 
Adult life age 21-30
Ornea’s history also includes a few passionate love liaisons - it was perhaps more passion than love though. At this age Ornea’s generally fiery temperament and her youthful impatience made her prone to get overwhelmed by desire, jump straight to passion and not really give love any time or chance to grow. Sometimes being singled out by people of higher rank wasn’t a problem for Ornea; it wasn’t anything special with this in Wind Reach and besides she could sense strong desire, and there’s actually few things as alluring as sure knowledge of being wanted.

Her liaisons during her twenties were intense, hot, consuming and fairly short. Ornea was still quite self-centered during this period of time. She thought of love and passion as something she wanted to get from others, in return for her own warm feelings for them, like it was emotional trade. More than one time, liaisons ended in short fused rage over something stupid. Most of them didn’t result in offspring, but Day 10 summer 506 AV, when Ornea was 22 years, she gave birth to two children, a boy and a girl. Being avora, she kept the children with her and raised them until it was time for them to join the yasi caste in year 514 AV. Ornea didn’t have the slightest idea who their father might be. And she didn’t care so much about that, but she cared very much for the children, and formed strong bonds with them, just like she had done with her own mother.


 
514 AV age 30+
In the beginning of year 514 AV her mother Mereth was over 70 years old. The old glass master died in her sleep peacefully. A brief Departure Ceremony was held, which acted as a funeral. After this, a Death Rider and his bird delivered the corpse to the Tomb of the Fallen and dropped it within the molten depths, thus sending the mothers spirit back into the mountains themselves.

As Ornea had stayed emotionally close with her mother all her life, this was a period of mourning that other Inarta could find it a bit hard to understand. Ornea often thought of Mereth and how the glass master had continued to love and care for her daughter. A feeling of selfless love that Ornea had always taken for granted and basked in as a natural thing that had always been there, wasn’t there anymore.

Little did she know that her own life in Wind Reach, as she had known it, would soon end too. Ornea didn’t die, but she overused her magic greatly when she was with a group of hunters who were trapped by an avalanche in winter 513 and she used the fire reimancy as part of the efforts they made to dig themselves out through the snow.

Ornea's magic wasn't strong, so overgiving was not of the deadly kind, and there didn't seem to be any physical wounds or bleedings. But there was more than just mild overgiving and she experienced altered mental states, delirium, dream-like experiences, convulsions and epilepsy. Long convalescence followed during spring and summer 514 and finally Ornea had to face it : she couldn’t go on using reimancy.

The meditation she had neglected and postponed must be done now, in order to heal her and make her able to withstand the sweet whisper of magic. But Ornea was also feeling unsure about how well she would succeed to improve if she stayed in Mount Inarta. In the hope that it would be easier for her to change her old bad habits in new place she decided to move to Lhavit. There she would work at getting control over her addiction and start a new life.

Languages

Languages :
Fluent Nari: Nari is her mother's tongue

Good Common: Common, which she got education in during six year in the yasi due to this being an important language for Wind Reach trade with the nearest city, Lhavit. She learnt common from a Lhavitian woman working as teacher in Wind Reach, which means Ornea got a good start at common at early age. After this she has also practiced the language a lot during the years; as an avora she has been involved in the trade between Wind Reach and Lhavit and participated in trade trips. This means that albeit she's a foreigner in Lhavit and speaks with Wind Reach accent, common doesn't cause her any major problems; minor misunderstandings can occur and she may need to ask for explanations when people use Lhavitian idioms or speak in a very complex way.

Poor Vani: Vani; a language she has picked up a bit of due to the sometimes contacts between Wind Reach and Avanthal. As Ornea didn't pick vani as her main foreign langugae in the yasi years, but put all her effort into learning common, her knowledge of vani is poor. It's a struggle to communicate, with a mix of single words and signs that isn't useful for much.

Heirloom: “The Philosophy of Transparency”, a handmade copy for Ornea, of a book written by Ornea’s mother, the Glasswork Master Mereth.
Description :
Made by a master crafter of high skill as a gift for her daughter on her 30th birthday, the book is of exquisite quality, with beautiful illustrations and calligraphy as well as interesting content. The author outlines her thoughts about crafting at esoteric level, including things like the nature of glass, light, fire and translucency, and more. This book is a personal keepsake and naturally never for sale. Not being a glassworker, Ornea can’t use this book for her mother's craft. But she likes to read in it and look at the pictures, and some of the theory can maybe be useful for other things. The affection value is infinite.

Description of the apartment :
Lana Winterflame seemed to hesitate a bit. But then she said : “There’s a room at the top floor. Well, an attic room actually. Quite spacious, a two bed room, but it’s a bit unpolished. I can show it to you, but it’s not the most convenient room we have. You would need to walk the stairs all the way up there and I can tell you the roof logs are visible and some walls are raw stone with no wall papers. Well there’s a canopy bed for two, a heart and so on like all the other rooms, you have all the things you need there, but it’s ...I can show it to you if you want to see it. “

She sounded like she found it unlikely that Ornea would want to have a look at the room she had described. But the Inarta immediately said yes. Climbing a few stairs didn’t deter her. Raw stone walls didn’t deter her either; she was used to caves in Mount Skyinarta.

They went up. There was only one door at the top floor, and while Lana opened it she told Ornea that there was only one room at this floor, and it hadn’t been there from the beginning. A few years ago the owner on Solar Winds had the idea to make a room up here; Lana had never figured out for what reason, but he had wanted the room so it had been built. But then he had changed his mind, also for unknown reasons, and the decorations had been left half finished, as they didn’t really need one more room to rent out. It had become a kind of emergency extra room, and they had furnished it, but in practice it had never been rented by anybody.

Behind the door was a room that looked like Lana had described it, yet Ornea found it much better than the description had hinted at. There were wood tiles on the floor and the “raw stone walls” meant the skyglass showing, which Ornea found nice. The canopy bed with it’s white draperies looked good enough in the light that came on through several big windows. The logs in the roof weren’t as bad as Lana had seemed to paint them out when she described the apartment. The style was definitely a bit rougher than the rooms Ornea had been showed downstairs, but the space was generous and thought it still wasn’t the cheapest room they had, she felt she would get much for the money.

Lana was utterly surprised when Ornea took the room, but she adapted quickly and they went down again and Ornea signed a contract and paid the seasonal rent in advance, 21 Kina, and received an ornate key made of brass, the length of half a hand.

I really enjoyed the thread! I thought you captured the Inarta attitude rather well! GASP theres no way that person was a Chiet, the nerve!
I also liked that you managed to find something neat. I love it when that happens, I think its how Miz goes round! Please understand that creating this lock will be very difficult to do. You will not only need to thread about figuring out what the plans are of, but also how to create a lock, how to recreate a lock and key and then the actual creation/repair. Whatever you do with this I suggest having me, or another St grade teh lock related threads rather than a normal grader.
