62nd day of Fall, 514 AV
The Communal Kitchens.

The place have been recently bustling on a very busy pace since the eleventh ring of the bell. Cooks kept themselves on a constant hectic pace while the rest who worked at the kitchens wavered at the tasks that needed to be done. It seemed that there was a vast number of hungry stomachs lining up judging from the size of the queue. Most of which might have departed from their recent work shifts to have themselves feel the relief given by good food. Some just wandered elsewhere in a hope that there might be leftovers littering on top of the recently occupied tables. Deks would mostly be in that unfortunate situation and in some occasions, a few number of Yasi children. For those who ventured to the Communal Kitchens just to seek some sort of respite, it would certainly be a bad place of choice seeing that the crowd waiting in-line just raised a chaotic atmosphere.

Demands sprung out wildly from the words of hungry individuals while occasional grunts and brawls took place in some segments of the monstrous queue just to let each other know who lined up first. The head of the kitchen somehow managed to raise a system where the upper castes were prioritized to have their meals served. But unfortunately, it only made matters worse as it angered most of the people lining up. The system was eventually upheld and went back to the 'first-come-first-serve' method. Still, the chaos continued and not a single attempt of the kitchen workers to restore peace have worked properly. The worst was, some of the hungry individuals started to lift violent terms just to get what they wanted.

Thane had found yet another unlucky time to let himself rest while there was still time for him to take a break. It could have been elsewhere where there were only a few people lingering around but he was hungry first and foremost and there was a need to pack up some energy for the next following shifts he'd take. Time was but a common enemy as he walked to take the last spot at the queue. He sighed with complete frustration, knowing that it might possibly take a day for him to get his meal. Miracles was something he currently needed. Perhaps he could just walk past the line and see if there were open spaces to let himself slip in. But he knew there were risks to it as it may fuel the impatience of the people lining up if ever they took a notice of his sneakiness.

He then lowered his head down, eyes peered down the ground as his mind refused to come up with ideas. There was nothing he could do but to wait along the line and miserably sniff the savory aroma of steam puffing from the kitchens. If only there was someone within the crowd who could let him join at the nearest part of the line. If only. Somehow, Thane went to that thought and hoped it was possible. There could be someone out there. Out of the many people around, he felt certain that there might be a friend of his lining up. His sights sharpened as he started to glance over to the farther points of the line. He bent sideways, scrutinizing to spot a familiar face, hopefully. Afterwards, he tried veering from a view above, taking a few hops to see if there was any hope. Still, none came to his view but the determination to eat had himself constantly trying.

"Thane!" Suddenly, Thane took full notice of the abruptly spoken word. His senses jumped into a series of excitement as his stomach grumbled grotesquely upon realizing how hungry he was. Without taking a quick glance of who it was, he slipped away from his line and walked hastily to where his name was uttered. It was as if his movements were being involuntary. He felt completely stupid once the realization came that he went out of his line.

"Over here, Thane!" The voice again spoke to him and was surprisingly clear in the midst of a noisy crowd. Thane began to think if it was a trick played by his ears. He certainly didn't know how much his desperate hunger for food could take him.

"Over here, you metal-headed idiot!" Perhaps his ears weren't pulling some tricks off. The voice seemed to be closer while he walked beside the nearest part of the line. Thane turned his head to his left where it sounded and saw someone strangely familiar. He squinted, rubbing his eyes afterwards just to confirm. Orange hair, golden eyes. All seemed to be ranging from a typical Inarta. He just wasn't sure who it was. "It's me, Kelan! Now get over here so you and I can have some pie."

Kelan? Strangely, Thane didn't know anyone with that sort of name. Perhaps his memory with people was just in a terrible condition. But after pondering through it again, he realized that the person was a friend of his mother. "Kelan!" He repeated, shamelessly sounding childish. "I'm so glad that you're here." A few grumbles of his stomach followed by, telling him that time shouldn't be wasted any further. Thane rushed towards him and inserted himself in a spot of the line just behind his friend. Luckily what was behind him was an old woman, clearly safe from having some misunderstandings rising.

"It's been a while. Your mother is doing great by the way." Kelan complimented but Thane didn't bother to respond. They were almost near the serving counter and waiting would be just in a matter of minutes.

It would've taken them a minute or two to get by the serving counter but unfortunately, an argument just recently heated up from the person lining up before them. The reason wasn't quite known, though there were hints springing loudly from the bickering about how terrible the meal was served. It was an excruciating wait, Thane's hunger was almost unbearable judging from how his stomach growled. It seemed that it was a huge mistake to sacrifice breakfast just for the benefit of his work progress. Kelan waited patiently despite having his ears thudded by the noises of the heated argument. He tried several attempts on giving Thane a slight glimmer of relief as he clearly knew how hungry he felt.

As the person before them calmed down, it was safe to say that the argument was over. The man slid past them, turning to his side to deviate from the line while carrying a tray of his meal along. Kelan sighed, knowing that the wait was over and at last, it was finally their turn. An average-looking female Inarta approached him, striking a radiant smile despite being fully occupied by the chaos. She tossed some strands of her hair which seemed to be blocking her right eye. Heaving a breath, she gestured Kelan for his order. "Yes?" The girl asked, still maintaining her smile. He would've wished the girl knew automatically but of course, the real world certainly does not work that way.

"One order of your special blueberry pie please." Kelan responded, adding a pleasant tone to his voice. Something bothered him though. With having Thane around, his decision of the order might have a slightly different impact towards him. Thane, on the other hand, reached towards his pocket, fishing through a few coins he had contained inside. While the coins clinked, Kelan suddenly took notice of it and immediately intervened, turning his head towards Thane and reaching his hand to stop. "I'll pay." He said, smoothly. Thane was left puzzled and as he freed his hand from his pocket, Kelan suddenly drummed his fist on the counter. "And one lemon pie, please!" He asked back, raising his voice slightly. Thane was even more puzzled. How could he know his favorite pie? Perhaps the man somehow established a decent relationship with his mother and going through the specifics would be clearly understandable.

"You don't have to." Thane empathized, though honestly, he was overjoyed that Kelan offered him a treat. There was no doubt that Thane would decline an offer most especially if it would be pie. Kelan chuckled, seemingly clueless of what Thane's words originally meant.

"Oh, don't worry about it. Just don't forget about breakfast next time." Suddenly, Thane's mind was struck by complete bewilderment. How the petch does he know? Clearly, he would've thought that it was a wild guess, a coincidence coming out of the blue but what if it was possible that he actually knew? If it was, there wouldn't be any reason he could think of to support it. Was this person capable of something peculiar? Perhaps magic? Whatever it was, Thane shook the thought of it away. His focus shifted back on waiting. In his current state, it seemed to take a very long turn even when it was only a minute passed since they took their orders.

A graceful sway of the female Inarta breezed at the counter, catching both Thane's and his friend's attention at an instant after giving time to wait. She went back with two small, wooden trays each lazing what had been ordered on top. As the girl handed them, it was immediately exchanged by a handful of coins and briefly, Kelan and Thane swerved from the line. Finally. Thane's thoughts swarmed with complete joyfulness, the aroma of the pie seemed to sate his hunger. It was as if he haven't eaten in a very long time. He glanced at Kelan while they marched to find a seat on the stone tables. "Thanks, by the way." Sincerely, he thought if the actions of Kelan may actually have been influenced by someone close to Thane but then again, he would've been thankful since it paved a sooner time for him to have his meal. Kelan didn't respond.

In the midst of the crowd which flocked the Communal Kitchens, there have been several Yasi children circling wildly, running to where their attraction took place and walloping through a few individuals who were then infuriated by their unwanted presence. Most of their purpose was to beg for whatever people could give them, mostly food or just a few coins just to have themselves purchase what their stomachs needed. A few fortunate ones were successful while others received harsh rebukes for being complete pests.

Kelan's sights turned suddenly, catching a view of what seemed to be the one they were looking for. He nudged Thane's shoulder with his, forcing to let his attention veer on what was seen. Both of them glanced at the two empty seats just after seeing two people leave. It was perfect. They marched swiftly in order to prevent anyone from occupying it, Kelan took a lead since Thane's movements limped the moment his stomach growled. "Come on!" Kelan scoffed. As Thane regained his footing, he slowly resumed his pace, balancing himself with the tray that he carried. However, something was bound to his left as it was running at a rapid haste. Thane quickly took a notice of the presence and turned to take a glance of it. It was a Yasi running blindly and it seemed that the he was escaping from the arms of an individual: an angry man which might have been infuriated from being begged constantly. By the time Thane could muster up an action to deflect the child, it was too late.

"Stop....Stop!!!" Thane yelled but it was no use. The Yasi ran continuously, and as he turned to where he was going, his force knocked Thane off his balance. With a slight falter, and some numerously quick attempts to maintain himself and the tray that was being held, Thane thought he would've fell but thankfully he didn't. However, he failed to realize that there was a man following the Yasi and all of a sudden, before he could even move towards the table Kelan had spotted, the man pounded him with his bulky body along the way, knocking Thane off the ground.

Thane fell, unable to take a grip of his meal. It was tossed in the air but his eyes didn't see where it landed. All of a sudden, his thoughts wondered aimlessly. His consciousness felt like fading. He turned to wherever the tray landed and then spotting the gruesome sight of it squashed on the ground. All of his waiting, The times where he suffered with an unbearable hunger, just seemed to be wasted by a few nuisances. He sighed angrily but he couldn't somehow express it in a verbal manner. Petch it all. The man and the Yasi didn't even bother to apologize and realizing that just fueled Thane's frustration. "Petch!" He growled.
