The Communal Kitchens.
The place have been recently bustling on a very busy pace since the eleventh ring of the bell. Cooks kept themselves on a constant hectic pace while the rest who worked at the kitchens wavered at the tasks that needed to be done. It seemed that there was a vast number of hungry stomachs lining up judging from the size of the queue. Most of which might have departed from their recent work shifts to have themselves feel the relief given by good food. Some just wandered elsewhere in a hope that there might be leftovers littering on top of the recently occupied tables. Deks would mostly be in that unfortunate situation and in some occasions, a few number of Yasi children. For those who ventured to the Communal Kitchens just to seek some sort of respite, it would certainly be a bad place of choice seeing that the crowd waiting in-line just raised a chaotic atmosphere.
Demands sprung out wildly from the words of hungry individuals while occasional grunts and brawls took place in some segments of the monstrous queue just to let each other know who lined up first. The head of the kitchen somehow managed to raise a system where the upper castes were prioritized to have their meals served. But unfortunately, it only made matters worse as it angered most of the people lining up. The system was eventually upheld and went back to the 'first-come-first-serve' method. Still, the chaos continued and not a single attempt of the kitchen workers to restore peace have worked properly. The worst was, some of the hungry individuals started to lift violent terms just to get what they wanted.
Thane had found yet another unlucky time to let himself rest while there was still time for him to take a break. It could have been elsewhere where there were only a few people lingering around but he was hungry first and foremost and there was a need to pack up some energy for the next following shifts he'd take. Time was but a common enemy as he walked to take the last spot at the queue. He sighed with complete frustration, knowing that it might possibly take a day for him to get his meal. Miracles was something he currently needed. Perhaps he could just walk past the line and see if there were open spaces to let himself slip in. But he knew there were risks to it as it may fuel the impatience of the people lining up if ever they took a notice of his sneakiness.
He then lowered his head down, eyes peered down the ground as his mind refused to come up with ideas. There was nothing he could do but to wait along the line and miserably sniff the savory aroma of steam puffing from the kitchens. If only there was someone within the crowd who could let him join at the nearest part of the line. If only. Somehow, Thane went to that thought and hoped it was possible. There could be someone out there. Out of the many people around, he felt certain that there might be a friend of his lining up. His sights sharpened as he started to glance over to the farther points of the line. He bent sideways, scrutinizing to spot a familiar face, hopefully. Afterwards, he tried veering from a view above, taking a few hops to see if there was any hope. Still, none came to his view but the determination to eat had himself constantly trying.
"Thane!" Suddenly, Thane took full notice of the abruptly spoken word. His senses jumped into a series of excitement as his stomach grumbled grotesquely upon realizing how hungry he was. Without taking a quick glance of who it was, he slipped away from his line and walked hastily to where his name was uttered. It was as if his movements were being involuntary. He felt completely stupid once the realization came that he went out of his line.
"Over here, Thane!" The voice again spoke to him and was surprisingly clear in the midst of a noisy crowd. Thane began to think if it was a trick played by his ears. He certainly didn't know how much his desperate hunger for food could take him.
"Over here, you metal-headed idiot!" Perhaps his ears weren't pulling some tricks off. The voice seemed to be closer while he walked beside the nearest part of the line. Thane turned his head to his left where it sounded and saw someone strangely familiar. He squinted, rubbing his eyes afterwards just to confirm. Orange hair, golden eyes. All seemed to be ranging from a typical Inarta. He just wasn't sure who it was. "It's me, Kelan! Now get over here so you and I can have some pie."
Kelan? Strangely, Thane didn't know anyone with that sort of name. Perhaps his memory with people was just in a terrible condition. But after pondering through it again, he realized that the person was a friend of his mother. "Kelan!" He repeated, shamelessly sounding childish. "I'm so glad that you're here." A few grumbles of his stomach followed by, telling him that time shouldn't be wasted any further. Thane rushed towards him and inserted himself in a spot of the line just behind his friend. Luckily what was behind him was an old woman, clearly safe from having some misunderstandings rising.
"It's been a while. Your mother is doing great by the way." Kelan complimented but Thane didn't bother to respond. They were almost near the serving counter and waiting would be just in a matter of minutes.
