Stretching northward along the coastline of the Suvan Sea, the Cobalt Mountains are the home of the Bronze Wood, numerous ruins, and creatures both strange and fantastical.

Wildwalkers II Spring 514AV
The southern edge of the Bronze Wood rose tall and green with new growth in the valleys and foothills, backed by the mighty Cobalts in the distance. The sky had cleared of all clouds, and the earth smelled of freshly wetted dirt. Yet Marrick had marched from Mythrins gates, with a dark cloud over his head. Not only had he left Mithryn with a busted nose, and an ache in his ribs. He’d left with the cause of his condition. They had walked for the better part of a day and he still couldn’t bring himself to even cast an evil eye in Sei Tendo’s direction. The urge to leave him busted and bleeding in the freshly planted fields still writhed in his belly, but their Patrons orders had been explicit.
“You two will learn to work together, and you will have to be more than just savage beasts. Regardless of the fact you’re Kelvics, you live amongst men! And you’re both squires to boot. Maybe even Knights one day. Savage brutality is not the way of the Syliran Order, and you both need to learn that. As men, you will go into the Bronzewood and kill a buck. And you will bring it back together. If one of you returns without the other, you’re out. If you fail to return without the stag, you’re out. A Knight of Syliras is wrath and serenity in battle, Honor in victory and defeat, and you two make me disappointed to say the least. Now get out of my sight, and come back when you’re ready to be squires again.”
David Whitevines words cut him deeply. He’d spent the first part of the day contemplating why he was still part of the order. Yet, strange as it might have seemed, Marrick didn’t want to let his patron down. He felt guilty, yet determined to bring back that deer. Somehow, he had to learn how to trust his fellow squire. For the time being, he was busy grinding his teeth into powder. |

Sei couldn't believe his ears. He was being paired with the idiot Marrick in front of him. The guy he'd been fighting with seconds ago. Could this get any worse? And it did. He had to hunt with him too? Yep, the tiger Kelvics mood just got worse. But then again, it was already pretty bad, but back talking his patron would get him nowhere fast.

The Raven Kelvic’s grind stopped as he heard Sei’s words, yet it did nothing to halt his gate as they walked north toward the wood. A long sigh escaped Marrick’s nostrils almost as if the tension of the morning had bled away. Even through the aches and pain that his opponent had given him, he found the Tiger Kelvic’s words comforting.
They were no longer opponents. They were stuck in the same boat. Regardless of whose fault it was.
“Oi have teh say, that is loikely the most sensible thing Oi’ve heard yeh say all morning.” Marrick quipped back with a tone of neutrality. The Raven Kelvic had to admit that it was a bit snarky of a response. Though, aches and pains had a way of coloring peoples moods.
The fields were tilled, and planted at this point which made traversing their dark and earthy muck no less frustrating and exhausting. Marrick felt he’d give anything for a lance, spear, or walking stick. It was hard work, but the Raven Kelvic was too proud to speak his frustrations choosing to soldier on.
It went on like that for a while, the pair marching together in silence through the mud. Doing their best not to disturb the various food crops sprouting their little desperate existences out of the dirt. |
