In Shai’s experience with human men she knew of only two ways to deal with those which perceived themselves as powerful; pander and play to their ego, or subvert authority and leave no room for refutation. If, although, the man Antar was playing his assassin’s gambit against was at this table neither option would work. To pander would make her even more suspicious but to domineer would see her bloodied. With no avenues left in her limited acting repertoire the thief saw only one clear path, be Shai. They would not know the difference between reality and a façade, especially considering one of them probably thought her Antar’s mistress.
Her lips painted a pert smile upon the exposed lower half of her visage, the rest still covered by her hood. “There is a more appropriate question. What is in it for you gentlemen to play a game with me?” In essence, the very question every one asked in Sunberth; what’s there to gain? “Surely I arrived in this place somehow and what are the odds that I managed to walk unmolested down the streets in silk on the arm of a man who paled when you snapped? You are betting men quite obviously. I am sure you can guess.” As she spoke Shai took her time examining the hands of each player at the table, from these appendages she could learn more of these men than any story their eyes might tell. Additionally, looking them in the face would require her to show her own, she wasn’t yet ready to play that card.
“The next step is obvious, but I will give it voice for continuity’s sake. Either I am able to protect myself in my own right or I have a benefactor.” The spider shrugged in a less lady-like fashion than her dress implied, “But that is only for theory’s sake. I know I have the mizas, several untapped assets at my disposal guarantee it.” In this line there was no lie at all and her confidence shown through in her voice. What she failed to mention is the ‘untapped’ assets were simply the goods she hadn’t yet decided to steal. Rearranging her skirts might have looked like the prerogative of a woman concerned with her elegance but Shai’s aim was to make sure if she had to run they wouldn’t hinder her first vital steps.
Just find the book, that’s all. Do not over complicate this woman. Sternly she planted the reminder firmly within her thoughts.
The Spider came upon a sudden realization, they’d demand to be able to see her hands if she played cards. Her carefully picked draped sleeves would count for very little, but she could wait to reveal that advantage until the very last moment. “There is nothing you might lose any monetary wager regardless, it is not as though I could slip by Tall Johnny if you gentlemen wanted me stopped.” She laughed affably, with a lilt of harsh cynicism. “I correct myself, right now you are losing something; time. So how about someone deal?”
