Monster of a Thief

Postby Matthew on June 1st, 2014, 3:23 am

45th of Spring, 514 AV.

Syna had just vanished, leaving Leth to take over and bring out the night. Stars glittered in the sky as Matthew swept through the thick forest, blue eyes shimmering a bit in the dark as he studied the surrounding trees. There were plenty of low-hanging branches and high ones, perhaps something that would be perfect for what he was going to try and do.

The Harlot normally took his bath in the morning, after he had finished his daily work-out routine. Today he had decided to try something different, visiting the Hot Springs near nightfall to take his bath and spending a bit more time soaking in the steaming waters. He was curious if the soak would help loosen up and relax his muscles, perhaps allowing for a more effective work-out. He has halfway home now, quietly making his way back through the southern hills. He wore an open white shirt that was fitted to show off his slim lightly-tanned muscle, no matter if the shirt was buttoned up or not. A simple necklace hung from his neck, an inverted cold-iron triangle dangling from it, glittering a bit in the light of the night sky. Simple black britches clung to his defined hips, Matthew always making sure that he was something of a walking advertisement for his profession of choice.

He hopped from foot to foot to begin the process of loosening up his relaxed muscles even further, and then slowly went into a small series of stretches. When it came to acrobatics, one of the things he wanted to work on was his flexibility. It would come in handy both when swimming and doing his regular bodybuilding and running exercises, so he tried to fit in some flexibility training whenever he had the chance. He stretched his back with both arms in the air, and then slowly stretched his body down to touch his toes. Both hands crept toward one boot, but were only able to make it to the knee before something of a stretching sensation in his lower back began to ache. He only held the position for a few moments longer before stretching back up, then back down and to the other knee. He held that one for a few ticks as well, then went back to bouncing from foot to foot. He was slow and methodical with his motions, oddly comfortable in the starlit darkness just outside of Sunberth.

Next came the exercises for his muscles. His arms and shoulders would quickly start to ache as he dropped to the ground, lifting and lowering himself in a series of ten push-ups. Another ten sit-ups followed, and then was finished off with a plank that lasted for about a minute. Then he allowed himself half a tick of rest, then once more repeated the entire sequence. He repeated it all for three sets in all, then slowly rose and leaned against a nearby tree, body shimmering with a bit of sweat as he caught his breath. He didn't really feel a difference in exercising now and exercising before his bath. He just felt sticky and messy.

Monster of a Thief

The sunset bathed the city, likely the only bath Sunberth had ever known. It was Shai’s favorite time of day, if she had a favorite time of day. In a season or maybe a stretch more the night bugs would chirp songs to one another at this time. For the spider it was morning.

When she had awoken the tent city had been too active still and so a jaunt through the trees had felt like a nice start to her night. Tonight she had to work so it would behove her to stretch out. She had chosen a long hanging thick branch and tossed her cloak over the end of the limb. Sure someone could snag it but they would be hard pressed to outrun or lose her in the woods and if they headed for the city there was a wide open stretch she would get a very good look at them. Such a look would not prove healthy.

Turning from Syna’s early slumber, Shai snatched up her cloak again folding it as tightly as she could to push the bundle into her belt. It was an awkward lump at the base of her back, but better than wearing the bundle. The one thing she had learned about tree paths in the wilderness was that the cloak was a hinderance. For a better stretch than just a walk the Symenestra had to find a small clearing or even better an old ancient tree. The enormous rounded limbs were exceptional for testing her balance and reactions.

As she leapt from limb to limb, utilizing her full body to move. Her lengthy arms came in especially handy. Between her limberness and frame, the cilia rippling out of her palms and soles kept the Symenestra inline in the upper roadways of the woods. One particularly high limb gave her a great view of the forest before her, and she found what she had only hoped for,an old soul. The tree almost certainly required hundreds of years old to grow to such a girth. Then again she had seen trees much greater in her travels, one that perhaps twenty men couldn’t encircle in their arms. This tree was not quite of that caliber.

Shai soon found two very different surprises though as she made her way for the grandfather tree. At its base stood a small clearing and in it a sweating human. Beyond him her tree swayed at a breeze, it was not terrible giant but the limbs were big enough to do. As her entirely inhuman eyes began to adjust to the steadily darkening world, the spider couldn’t help but wonder why this man would dare the hills at night. She watched quietly from the cover of leaves and deepening shadow as the man performed his exercises. As he curled into a ball repeatedly, Shai couldn’t help but notice a pendent swing back to hit him in the chest. Perhaps tonight she could work while stretching. Demoya might find interest in that little piece.

The crimson and indigo fans, which were usually concealed by her cloak, sat in the open on her narrow hips. Careful to move only as the breeze rustled the leaves the thief made her way closer to the beautiful young man. He leaned on a tree to rest and this was the spider’s chance. Crouching down in the same tree, so low she was nearly upside down already. She pulled an unripe nut from the tree limb and hurled it an opposite tree’s roots, making a small crash through the brush. Fully inverting herself now she reached forward and attempted to snatch the necklace right over the man’s head. Sure of her success she skittered higher up the trunk, well out of his arm reach. Shai opened her fist to check if she had been successful.

Monster of a Thief

He was able to climb up to one of the low-hanging limbs, standing straight and balancing on it, bouncing just a little bit to test the weight. It seemed sturdy enough, only shuddering a bit underneath his weight. He lightly hummed to himself as he glanced around, searching for another nearby limb, spotting another low-hanging one that was only a couple of feet away. He paused and studied it for a bit, trying to tell by appearance alone if it could hold his weight as well. It was hard to tell. It wasn't that high though, so if he did end up breaking the branch under his weight then he was fairly sure the resulting fall wouldn't injure him in some brutal fashion. He took a breath and bent at the knee, then threw himself forward and outstretched his hands. He was able to catch the limb, his momentum naturally swinging him forward, giving him the idea that he could probably continue leaping to another branch if he had the skill. Sadly, he did not, leaving him dangling and swaying side to side.

Would it be possible to pull himself up? In a move that his bodybuilding training had recently started to include, Matthew slowly flexed the lithe muscles in his arms and tried to pull himself up. He only managed to get about halfway before his shivering arms gave out, causing him to fall slack and just dangle there for a moment. Catching his breath, the Harlot eventually gave up and just dropped to the ground. Studying the surrounding limbs and branches, he went through another series of stretches while he plotted out his next move. He ended up leaning on a tree again, not at all aware of the presence of the approaching woman. He started to work on summoning his djed, swirling it up through his veins, beginning to put his auristics skills to use. Perhaps the aura of the limbs would help him decide which were the sturdiest.

That was about when the noise caused his head to curiously turn to the side, blue eyes studying the opposing tree, looking for the source of the sound. The cold iron left his neck suddenly, causing the Harlot to blink in confusion and stare down at his chest. It was gone. Stolen?

The world lit up in the bright colors of all the surrounding auras, Matthew checking for the source of his newest problem. It was the aura above him that stood out like a sore thumb, sounding like thousands of tiny little limbs skittering over wood and stone, tasting foul and glowing with rather pretty purple tendrils of smoke. He couldn't see the actual owner of the aura very well at all due to her height. Leth and his accompanying stars provided some light, but his tormentor had managed to keep to the shadows.

Djed buzzed in him as he fully turned to face the tree trunk, voice carefully pronounced and somewhat cold. Normally, he wouldn't care if something had been stolen from him. Normally, he would commend their skill. That pendant was important though. It was the only link to a certain someone who he owed a visit. Without it, he had no doubt that he would be turned away. "I will need that back, please. You can certainly have coin if you so wish. But not that necklace."

Monster of a Thief

“If I had wanted your coin, would I not have taken that instead?” Shai sounded genuinely curious, wondering what else the young man imagined. Her speech held all the qualities of a whisper but the volume; raspy and rolling, yet loud enough to be heard at the base of the tree. OUt of all things, her voice gave her away as foreigner more than anything else. The Symenos always leaked into her Common speech.

Running her fingers along the edges of her prize, she considered how to handle this. The thief could just cut and run, take her meager earnings. On the other hand, she might be able to extort something out of this stranger, he was quick to offer trade. Inwardly she spoke to her Irylid, Chell, keep a vantage point for me? You know how humans like to run in packs in this city.

The familiar didn’t reply immediately, it was a silence Shai had come to interpret as agitation though she couldn’t be completely sure. Acceptable but do not go within his reach.

Shai nodded thoughtfully, I may have to but we will talk first before I do. She had been making a concentrated effort to make Chell feel like a partner rather than a pet. So far it was working out better than their previous seasons together, less hostility in general. Someday the two might be a formidable pair. She opened up herself; laid her mind bare. Her least favorite of activities was letting Chell draw from her because it meant she had to acknowledge even the parts of herself she didn’t care to dwell upon. Staring at the corner of her mind that held back the beast was ever unpleasant. A constant reminder that one day she might be nothing more than the monster that human stories painted her kind as. Drawing from all of who she has been, is , and ever will be a tiny tendril of djed connected into the ice crystal.

As if melting outwards, the Chell released his mooring on Shai’s necklace and grew into an orb. He settled upon the crux of a branch to watch over the scenario.

The Symenestra began to shimmy through the tree tops, poking in and out of line of sight. It took a few chimes for the ash-skinned woman to find a new perch, a few trees away but no more than twice present company’s height from the ground. “I do not desire your coins, I need jewelry. Unless you have more I cannot see a reason I should trade.” Although her eyes were near full dilation, edging out the ring of lavender it was still an uncanny color, especially in the dark of the night. Shai eyed her claws pulling out small pieces of splintered wood from the sharp nails. For all the world she look unconcerned, but that same distance she kept from his reach belied the truth, she was ever cautious.

Monster of a Thief

Postby Matthew on June 18th, 2014, 9:50 pm

The Harlot couldn't help but slightly furrow his brow as the aura of Thief (now named in his mind) seemed to morph, twist, and then seperate. The original aura still remained, though something nondescript was now missing. Whatever that thing was, it had somehow taken form in the shape of a small orb of aura. Magic of some sort? That was the only thing he could think of. Magic or the touch of the gods, both of which had the ability to do things that he no doubt would not understand. The odd aura settled upon the crux of the branch and just sat there, Matthew wondering if he should try to understand the aura. He could expend a little bit of his djed, burn off just a bit to try and meld his mind with the occurance in front of him. He didn't really have the time, though. There was something more pressing at hand. Thief was scurrying away, climbing through branches and treetops in a way that seemed elegant and insect-like. He wasn't sure if he had ever combined those two concepts before. He nipped on his lower lip but refrained from turning his head to follow the aura, keeping his eyes pointed forward as if he was still under the impression that her location was up on the original tree.

Only when her voice softly whispered out did he turn, head slowly tilting towards hers, blue eyes shimmering in the light of the hanging stars. What was she? Something he had never encountered before, that was for sure. He had no idea what to make of it. In a different time and place he would have been eager to find out, eager to learn about this new and undiscovered thing. He had plans though, and part of those plans hinged on that necklace. Her terms were interesting, but it caused him to wonder if he should approach taking the necklace back in a different way. He certainly felt that it was possible.

"What if I take you on a date right now and buy you jewelry?" His soft words slipped out, the proposition probably coming totally out of left field. Apparently he was asking her out now. There wasn't a hint of malice or mocking though, nor did he sound like he was trying to be particularly clever. He just sounded curious, like she did.

He stepped toward her current location, just a single movement forward and then stopped, just getting her rather interesting aura a bit closer to him. It made his skin crawl, though not out of fear. He didn't think it was out of fear, at least. It had been a rather long time since he had been afraid. Did he even remember what it felt like?

Shai’s lip quirked into a smile, a facade while she interpreted his offer. A date, clearly in this context did not mean the day that was signified by a number. She considered her rogue-ish partner, he had used the word a few times to imply an outing. Her brows rose slightly in surprise, the, albeit rather handsome, human wished to take her to purchase jewelry? Either he was a brave man to dare the streets of Sunberth at night with Symenstra or he didn’t know what she was. Still she entertained the idea, if only for the look on Silvertongue’s face when her own thief walked into the shop to purchase jewelry on a mark’s money and then promptly return the trinket to its display place. It wasn’t strictly within the parameters of her job though, so who knows. Maybe Demoya would decide it didn’t count and wouldn’t pay her. “So this necklace is special then? It is not a love of jewelry that makes you wish it back?”

Rolling over reasons in her mind, the spider tried to decide why she even gave the man a chance. Perhaps because she didn’t want him finding her later, that was a rational reason. More likely she was curious, a trait that had been known to get her into hot water a time or two.
“I do not spend my nights with humans unless they are of great value to me. You flatter this woman, but I will not accept.” Not to mention Antar would be less than amused, she imagined but kept it to herself.

Shai, I can see a light in the distance but its moving towards us. In response to Chell’s warning the Symenestra jerked upwards, for all the world looking like an alert animal.

“Something is coming human, if you want your trinket back I will wait near the Knight’s Armory for two bells. Bring something to trade and it is yours.” Turning back on to the tree limbs the spider traversed back to her original tree. With another draw of her essence the familiar regained his sealed form and tumbled from its perch. The spider snaked out a pale hand and snatched the falling gemstone. “Two bells, and then your necklace is mine. This is more fair than I usually offer to a mark.”

Turning to leave the Spider thought it best to leave a name, she had to make her alias known somehow and this was yet another chance. “I am Saris, and thief is only as good as her word.. If you must there are those with could tell you the same, but I don’t know where you could find Bitzer or Zandelia at this time of night.” Shai shrugged using Bitzer was a stretch but they were the only two Sunbertherians she had met since returning to the city. It was Shai’s experience although than Zandelia knew everyone who was anyone and if the man could simply offer to purchase her jewels as if it was of no consequence he was someone. “And if I was you, I would run.” She certainly took her own and advance and dashed off through the treetops. Displaced leaves occasionally fell to the earth as she made her path.

oocNot to worry she will still teach him acrobatics, I promise!
