Port of Avanthal

Image

The Port of Avanthal is the main way into the waters from the city. It was from this port that Captain Kenabelle and her crew docked at when they were sailing the seas of Mizahar. The port is guarded by the Coolwater branch of the Icewatch. The Sulnara of the Coolwater branch, Coren, is almost always found guarding the port making sure that everyone entering the city is not a threat to the citizens. At his side is his mount Fianna who serves with him at the port. Coren is kind to everyone who comes to the port but don't let his kind demeanor fool you. If you are a threat to his city he will make sure that you do not get anywhere near it.

The docks are available to any boats that need to be docked. Almost all of the boats at the port are the property of the Coolwater Hold because they are the fishers and boaters of Avanthal. Envan Coolwater, the Pavintu Janta of Coolwater hold can usually be found at the port everyday fishing with his sons and friends or just going out for a leisurely ride in his boat. For visitors who want to take a ride on a boat or go fishing they can head over to Lasheela Coolwater's shop where one of the on call members of Coolwater can take them out on the ocean. The prices can be a little lofty depending on the expertise of the boater but if one really wants to have a safe ride through the rough northern waves they need one of Lasheela's boaters.

(NPC) Coren :

Coren was born to the Coolwater hold and was convinced by his father to join Icewatch. He was very hesitant at first to join but he wanted to do what his father asked. When he joined he trained alongside Jedara for a while. He was actually quite good at unarmed combat and soon he was going onto getting his own mount. He bonded with Fianna quite easily because both of them had very calm and easy going personalities. Because of the great skill of Coren and Fianna the two were promoted to the rank of Sulnara in the year 509 AV.

Fianna is Coren's mount. She is a very sweet girl but she can be very brutal in battle. She is very protective of Coren and would give her life to protect him. She is very beautiful and a little shorter than most of the other mounts. She is often treated like the little sister of Icewatch but she doesn't mind very much. As long as she is fighting alongside Coren she is happy.

[Location] Port of Avanthal

Slowly a slick, finned head rose out of the water pupilless, dark plum eyes scanning the surface above for any dangers which would prove to be a problem. Not sensing anything, the Charoda dove beneath the surface once again and swiftly, yet cautiously, swam closer towards the docks and the shore. When the ground was within an appropriate distance, Ardra stopped swimming and let her lithe feet touch the earth, using the surface to propel her forward.
The calm surface was instantly disturbed as her head rose up from beneath the dark, cold depths of the sea, her body followed in quick succession. Ardra shook the excess water from her body, not wanting it to freeze on her skin and prevent her from being able to breathe properly. Fixing the large, water proof pouch which rested on her hip, Ardra stepped out of the water. There were many ships around and the land dwelling people who were present stared at the foreign girl who now stood on their frozen land. Her tentacles twitched in nervousness as her eyes darted about her surroundings, finding each and every possible escape route incase someone came at her in a threatening way. Ardra hadn't had contact with overworlders, as she liked to call the land dwelling people, so she wasn't exactly sure what to expect when adventuring outside of her home for the first time.

58th, Fall of 511 A.V

Alea Davenport was filled with excitement as she hopped of the boat that had brought her from her hometown of Denval into strange and new lands. No longer would her parents be able to make her scrape fish guts! She took in a deep breathe of fresh new air and looked around...
...and had no idea what to do next. Leaving home had been a glamorous idea, but now that she was here, she realized how remarkably unprepared she was. She almost turned around and got back on the boat, but she slapped her face and said, "No Alea, you can DO this." She just needed to find somebody to ask for help. But as she looked around the docks, she suddenly became shy. She knew the Common language of the outside world, but only enough to get by; she was hardly comfortable speaking the foreign tongue.
Just as she was working up the resolve to ask the nearest passerby for direction, she heard a meow from inside her pack. Oh, great, she thought, the cat is hungry. She opened the flap of the pack, but before she could do anything else, the cat she had impulsively brought for a companion on her journey jumped to the ground and took off down the pier. "Oh no, come back!" she cried in her native tongue as she took off after him, hoping to catch the cat before he cause any damage, or got lost, or hurt... The possibilities were endless and too horrible to imagine.

69th Day of Spring, 513 AV, Morning

Slipping through the crests a mistral blowing against her exposed forehead as she broke against each wave to gaze at the glowing dome of light that was Avanthal at this distance. Slowing she squinted upward watching the shorebirds diving jubilantly before rising on an airstream. The air licked its cold tongue over her moist forehead and the wind stung her eyes.

The djed storm last spring had changed the currents and she hadn't been far from her home since Cys' death and the destruction of her home so the days swim had been a struggle, the new currents having set her off course numerous times turning an eight hour swim into twelve. Despite this the day had been delightful, leaping over waves with a pod of dolphins and exchanging strange whistles with a beluga, just for the joy of making noise. She had felt like a child again and despite the ache in her legs she felt it worthwhile.
The wind had blown against her and slowed her already feeble progress the whole day and for once she was anticipating traveling through the less resistant air.

Built more for the acrobatic movements needed for weaving through coral and evading predators the straight path to Avanthal had been taxing. Cy had been born in Avanthal and was familiar with the gleaming turrets and would often visit to steal poems and other shreds of books for her delight but every time they had approached his wings would whistle louder as he dove and his honks sounded very much like the delighted screams of a child. Over the years she had found even in his animal form she was able to sense the humanity in his calls and movements. Closing her eyes she tossed herself into the air, flipping through the air in delight. Momentarily feeling the overwhelming happiness he had felt in the air. Being so near his past home made his absence less acute, the weight lifting made her vocal in her jubilation.

Quieting as Avanthal came into sight she slipped beneath the surface of the oil black water and approached the port. Gulping anxiously she reached out to surface and slid into a dark corner watching the shorebirds descend landing awkwardly and waddling among the dead fish innocently before glancing around and gobbling one up. Laughing quietly she slipped the white dress and cloak on slowly lacing the cotton boots up to her thighs flexing her feet experimentally in the leather soled bottoms. The fabric rubbed uncomfortably against her skin making her wrinkle her nose distastefully. Knowing that moistening it would only make her colder she tolerated the scratching with only moderate amounts of complaint.

Tense, Una slipped from their hiding place feeling awkward in her clothes and extremely light. Movements that took more force underwater were faster and sharper here making her feel like a moving icicle, her every movement graceful but deliberate and aggressively sharp. Paving her way with each step through the snowy city she forced herself to push out her chest and forced confidence to the forefront like a woman ringing every drop of water from a moist towel.

Una approached the two and paused gazing up at Kelvic and Vantha silently. They smiled warmly and curiously at her, there had never been a Charoda this far North before in their experience. Her parents and her had lived in Thunder Bay and doubtless they had never strayed far enough away from her as to visit Avanthal. She gazed back at the Kelvic and smiled, though she had never followed Cy into Avanthal on their visits she had tremendously enjoyed watching the Polar Bear Kelvics at play in the ocean and they had captivated her instantly. They were, like Cy, everything she was not; powerful, full of the djid of the icy land, and at the same time they could play and dance as gracefully as dolphins in the water. Una loved the paradox.

Reaching out to touch the Kelvic her hand was gently caught by the man, he smiled kindly at her and gestured to the city, "You may enter Avanthal miss but please respect the Iceguards on duty." She nodded quickly and exchanged a smile with the Kelvic. The man had been so gentle and she entered the city feeling at ease.

Peering around she spotted the tavern Cy had so loved, and the last place he'd been when she had first met him and he'd fallen drunk from the sky while she was watching the bears. Una slipped into the building excited to see, hear and smell all that she'd been told of.
