Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

72nd day of Summer, 514 AV

Tonight was Alaia’s turn to cook meals for any of those living at the Sanctuary and she wasn’t entirely sure what she was going to make or how she was going to make it. Cooking wasn’t her best skill just yet; in fact it was probably one of her worst so all she could pray for was not making something utterly terrible. Currently the Konti was curled up in the middle of the garden with her sketch pad on her knee and charcoal smudged on her hand, face and even on the back of her neck where she had an itch earlier. Her steady gaze was fixed on a plant, the name of which she was unsure of just yet, and she was drawing the curve of the one of the leaves when her stomach growled in protest. Time had slipped past her faster then she had thought and the grumble of her hunger jolted her from the trance she always got in when she drew. She wasn’t done with her copy of the plant and just as she placed the tip of her charcoal back down her stomach gave another lurch.

With a sigh the healer rose to her feet, stiff in all the right places that came after sitting for so long. Slowly she stretched from her webbed toes all the way up to her hands which were still holding the sketchpad and charcoal. Giving the plant a farewell nod Alaia moved to head back down into the lower portion of the Sanctuary and put her drawing away in her quarters. It was different here from living at the Pearl House full of other Konti’s and right on bustling docks of the city. She hadn’t been here long but she already found her feet carried her around the grounds and through hallways she didn’t think she’d ever get used to. Her body was getting used to the twists and turns and she was sure she could probably navigate some parts blind folded now.

After dropping off her sketchpad to her room Alaia made her way to the kitchen, which wasn’t far off, and ran a charcoal stained hand through her hair getting some of the dust into the light golden strands as well. The scents that always seemed to linger in the kitchen greeted her nose and she smiled despite her trepidation for cooking. There had to be a cookbook somewhere in the kitchen, Kavala couldn’t expect everyone to know how to cook when they came here could she?! No, Alaia doubted it though she was convinced her dear friend would pick on her if she messed this meal up beyond any recognition.

With a deep breath the Konti spent the first few minutes opening cupboards and prodding her nose into drawers trying to learn the layout of the various utensils, plus it took up more time this way and put off the disaster that was sure to be made with her hands. Maybe she should have asked someone for help but she was too stubborn and wanted to show her worth to the Sanctuary too much to lean on someone for such a menial task. A hum formed on her lips, it was slightly off tune but the melody was sweet and carefree – something her mother hummed when she was in the kitchen back on Mura. Alaia wondered if humming it would actually help her cook better though she knew realistically it wouldn’t there was still that childhood hope it would.

Finally she turned her attention to look for a book of recipes, anything that might guide her hand because that had to be better than her just mixing random things she didn’t know the name of. Shaking her head to herself it took a moment before a book was noticed and she trotted over to give it a peek. Lifting the cover, only wide enough to let in some light on the pages within, Alaia bent at the waist and peered at the text on the page. The last thing she wanted was to start reading something only to find out it was a personal journal of someone’s, she invaded people’s privacy enough for that.

“Cooking Fish.”

The words were scrawled in a neat hand and she smiled before pushing it open all the way open. Fish was something she knew, even if she didn’t know how to cook it she at least knew how it should taste. She could handle fish, or at least she hoped she could. With careful fingers she turned the pages as if any sudden movement would mar the book and leave it ruined, it wasn’t hers so she handled it with the utmost care. Most of the recipes were complicated, they spoke of various heating tools and herbs and spices and to be quite honest while she could understand obscure medical terms in common that talent did not seem to translate to cooking terms. Half of some of the pages were gibberish and she just let out a frustrated sigh.

[The Sanctuary] The Spices of Life.

"Whatcha doin'?" A shy voice wanted to know from the vicinity of Alaia's elbow.

When Alaia looked, she would find a tiny konti peeking over the lip of the counter. Lillian's hair was braided in an intricate crown about her head in the style of the horselords and a few swiftly withering honeysuckle blossoms straggled from them haphazardly where the toddler had no doubt stuck them at some point earlier in the day. Having met Alaia and drawn pictures with her before, Caelum's daughter was still reserved but not painful in her shyness. She was nosing at the counter, standing on the tip toes of bare feet. She wore a simple cotton dress the faded color of the sea that tied in the back in a big bow. There was also a sun painted in bright orange on her left cheek by what appeared to be someone's fingertip. Someone small, so probably either Cadra or Tasival.

"I can help?" Lillian turned the biggest pair of blue eyes on Alaia. "I'm hungry."

From one of the doorways to the open kitchen and living area came a sigh as the child's father came ambling in, loose hipped and smelling all over of horses and grass and salt wind. In a sleeveless undershirt, worn riding leathers, and tall riding boots, he looked every inch of him the long dead Drykas Ankal he had been once upon a forever ago. Dark hair was braided back in a more masculine version of Lillian's own braids and the hems of his trousers were only partially stuffed into halt buckled up boots, too long for these ancient bones. They were meant for the sun lord, not this altogether too human creature roaming his way toward the pantry.

"She's not hungry," Caelum grumbled, apparently a bit out of sorts. He knew his daughter wasn't hungry as fact thanks to ranuri after all. "She's curious. Curious as a cat."

"As Cadra." Lillian claimed, smiling a little.

Caelum hooked two fingers and jerked them in a bouncing motion that was Pavi for pounce. Lillian erupted into giggles.

OOCAnyone who is joining, I know there are a couple of you out there who plan on it, just jump in whenever you want :)

The mounting frustration that was seeping through the Konti’s pores evaporated when the sounds of a sweet voice she hadn’t even noticed approach greeted her. “Hey Lil.” Alaia breathed out, a grin forming on her lips as she shifted her weight to peer down at the sweet child Konti. “I’m trying to cook dinner and not have everyone choke on my lack of cooking skills.” A laugh framed her words, soft and sweet filling the room with an ease that was starting to settle into her day by day. There had always been a tension in the healer, discovering others intentions when she was fixing them up and treating them had not been a favorite pass time of hers, but her gift didn’t seem to work on animals and it was slowly relaxing her despite the horrid events of the summer.

“Of course you can help.” The grin on her lips spread to her eyes, making them glitter in amusement “Would you like to sit on the counter? You will probably be my good luck charm in making this actually edible.” Alaia reached down to pick up the toddler when Lil assented to her boost into the counter. The older Konti grunted slightly and her frame bent a little to manage the task considering her own height impairments but when she got the little one settled her eyes slid up to the sound of Caelum’s voice. Alaia’s smile softened seeing him in his night form; it was how he looked when they first met and she enjoyed the lay of tattoos over his features and the hang of his braids.

At the motion of the unknown word in Pavi Alaia’s smile only widened listening to the child’s laughter. “Well cats are very smart creatures so clearly your daughter is very smart if she is acting like a cat.” She teased lightly and slid the book closer to her and Lil as she leaned an elbow on the counter “Lil do you know how to read?” She tilted her eyes to the girl sitting beside her and grinned mischievously “Or should we get your daddy to help us, we can make him read to us while us ladies get to do all the fun work?” Alaia’s grin slid towards Caelum then and she nudged the book his way and blushed with embarrassment “I don’t know half the words in this book. How am I supposed to cook something that won’t make everyone throw up if I don’t know what the words mean? It should have a Kontinese translation or something.”

Her look was almost desperate before she spotted an apron out of the corner of her eye. Turning from the annoyance of the book Alaia grabbed the apron and moved back to Lil with a grin “Queen chef Lillian, I present you with your gown to rule the kitchen in.” In a curtsy the older Konti laughed softly and draped the apron over Lil’s head and then tied it around the girl so she wouldn’t get her clothes messy. “How are you Caelum?” Her eyes drifted over the horselord trying to get a sense of his mood though a smile remained faintly on her lips as she dug out a wooden spoon to give to Lil as a scepter so she could truly rule over the kitchen. “Were you two out riding? How was it?” Alaia asked with a nod to his outfit and the fact that the closer he came the more she picked up his scent of barn and grass, it was actually a smell she was beginning to find comforting the more she was around the horses.
