Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Aoren had never been rendered breathless before. He had never really felt the fluttering of butterflies in the pit of his stomach but as Caelum leaned forward pressing the kiss to his cheek it took a moment for him to recover from every thought in his brain being scattered into a hundred different directions. Even as the towel was handed to him Aoren only stood there for a moment holding it against his chest. Gingerly he reached up to brush his fingers across the surface of his cheek where Caelum’s lips had rest upon his skin. Warmth began to gather in Aoren’s face. The bath was already warm but he suddenly felt several degrees hotter. He knew without having to look that redness was flushing his cheeks and the tips of his ears. He was pulled from his dazed state when Caelum began talking again. Shaking his head, which seemed counter-productive in the effort of collecting his thoughts, he rose up out of the water stepping up onto the ledge of the bath.

He made no effort to hide himself this time around. He ran the soft fabric of the towel over his body listening to Caelum’s words but only partially hearing them. His mind was still focused on two simple words precluded by a kiss.

Welcome home.

Home. Until that moment Aoren had never, in the whole of his life, felt as if he’d been welcome anywhere. The caretakers at the Welcome Home orphanage in Syliras had once said it was the echo that all orphans grew up with. Outcasts every one of them, alone together in a sea of strangers.

No more.

Whether it was the warmth that he felt coursing through his body or simply because he had made up his mind, Aoren felt emboldened. Wrapping the towel about his waist he glided across the tiles of the room stepping up close to Caelum even as he was busy fiddling with the locks of hair he claimed as payment. With a sureness that he had never felt before in getting closer to another person Aoren brought a hand to Caelum’s waist before pulling him close. With his other hand he caught Caelum’s chin between his fingers and tipped his face upward so that their gaze met firmly. Eyes the color of Laviku’s deep waters searched the honeyed fields of Caelum’s gaze. Aoren’s heart rate picked up. He felt as if he were shaking but when he spoke his voice was steady and strong.

I’m done searching.” The hand that gently grasped Caelum’s chin slid to cup the side of his face before Aoren leaned in pressing his lips to the Ethaefal’s. What Aoren lacked in the way of finesse or experience in being intimate with others he made up for in simply giving in to the emotions coursing through him. For the first time in a long time he felt no doubt. He didn’t feel the bitter tang of fear, fear of rejection or the ache born from a hole he could not fill. He felt the weight of so much loss, so much pain and suffering from the trials in his life, abate. The phantoms were still there but for the moment they could be pushed aside. Here and now the whole of who he was, was focused on Caelum.

What he wanted. What he needed, for the first time he felt as if he had finally found it. It was a liberating feeling so intoxicating that Aoren nearly felt like weeping. Almost.

The kiss was not a short one for what meaning was there in stolen pecks? When finally Aoren broke it he did not jump back like a shy boy but stood there waiting to accept the consequence of his action. His hand remained upon Caelum’s cheeks, the thumb gently rubbing across the Ethaefal’s cheekbone. He said nothing. He merely studied Caelum. He studied the strands of his hair. He studied the lines of his face and the tone of his skin. He felt as though what could have been said with words, he said enough with his actions. When his eyes met Caelum’s again he did wonder if the Ethaefal would do the same.

[Alements] An Open Door

Caelum swung up an eyebrow when Aoren stepped toward him, instantly curious to see what this was about. The little packet he had made of the man’s hair stilled in his hands, far more than mere hair in his possession. They were his, and as such they were keys to the chavi of Aoren Skycrown.

When Aoren reached for him, he went still with surprise, the warnings drying up in his mouth. It was to make room for sudden breath as he was kissed and ranuri twisted powerfully through him. It pulled greedily from Aoren’s desires and came back with handfuls of itself. This was because Aoren’s wants were turned toward Caelum. He wanted to be close to Caeulm, to support Caelum, to reciprocate how Caelum had just made him feel…

Welcome.

The kiss was returned, effortless. Caelum had been kissed a thousand times if once, and gifted at least as many in return. Lips and cheeks, hands and hair, eyelids and collarbones and tender places best left for bedrooms and dreams. Since the goddess Nikali herself had kissed him in a five-fold blessing on the edge of a world’s end, he also saw all of the kisses coming. This one was different, and it took him entirely off guard.

“I mean, that counts too. Saliva,” he muttered after a long moment when the kiss broke and they stood there, intimate and warm. He was referencing previous his warning about Aoren leaving pieces of himself behind for Caelum’s own enemies to use again them. It was completely ridiculous, but for the first time in a very long while Caelum had not the faintest idea how to react to being kissed. The desire behind it was not sexual, but it was deeply personal. In ways, it was almost more personal than anything else.

For a space between heartbeats, he was dizzyingly homesick.

A breath left him, defeated, and he reached up to grasp Aoren’s wrist and gently pull his hand down. It was so Caelum could press a kiss to his palm, a smile ghosting up under the curl of Aoren’s fingers before he stepped back.

“Since you’re, ah, done searching and all. Which is good, I’m saying. That’s all. It’s good. You should stay here with me and, ah,” he waved a hand distractedly. Simple pleasure was beginning to buoy through him and he struggled to regain his composure.

His smile deepened, entirely of its own accord, and he met blue eyes.

“You should do that again sometime,” he invited at last. He recovered his aplomb and tried very hard not to wear it like the wall it so often was. He tilted his head bemusedly toward the stack of Aoren’s discarded clothes. “Let’s get out of here.”

Aoren couldn’t help but laugh at Caelum’s reaction. Still, there was something impossibly endearing about the way Caelum stammered on. Before the Ethaefal could step away Aoren drew him closer gently resting his forehead against Caelum’s. He ran his hands up and down the length of Caelum’s back closing his eyes simply basking in the feel of the other man’s presence. Releasing Caelum he made his way over to his clothes and began dressing himself. He was feeling very good about himself at the moment. He knew exactly the reason why he was in such a good mood but it didn’t need to be stated out loud. As he tugged on his boots and dried off his hair with the towel he tossed Caelum a more intimate smile.

I have every intention of doing that again. As often as you let me.” Now that the wall was down, now that the door was open Aoren intended to keep it that way. There was a time when he would have backed away or closed himself off to what he was feeling right then and there. He didn’t feel that way now. Quite the opposite, he felt compelled to make his feelings known. The walls he normally would have put up with a person Aoren couldn’t fathom erecting with Caelum. It just seemed…wrong. When he was finished fidgeting with his boots he met the Ethaefal’s gaze.

Lead the way. I will follow.” Isikai trot over to Aoren nudging his knee with his nose. Until that moment Aoren had nearly forgotten the dog was present. He felt a little guilty about that for which he pet the dog affectionately. Rising to his feet he gathered up his dirty clothes and belongings accompanying Caelum out of the bathhouse. Aoren walked in step with the Ethaefal an easygoing gait to his stride. He took no liberties he wasn’t granted but he couldn’t deny that the dynamic of his relationship with Caelum had changed. He saw the man in a different light, it was a brighter light and it was also a light in which he felt a stronger attraction to him.

I want to build a life here, Caelum. I would hope that life includes you.” As they made their way back into the city Aoren thought on the road that lay ahead. For the first time in a long time it looked as if he wouldn’t be walking that road alone. The thought made him smile. Avalis had not blessed him with the ability to See the future. At that moment in time though? Aoren didn't need it. To him, the future couldn't have looked brighter.
