The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

NOTE FOR THE GRADERI got permission from Mirage to do this thread. :)

Kesu was uncertain as what course to take. She was low on money, and didn't have a job at the moment. Now, the obvious decision would to try and find one, but that was harder than it sounded at first. A lot of jobs were very specialized, requiring a distinct set of skills. And in addition to this, she wasn't good enough with auras or glyphs, (even though she was still learning), to get a job in a laboratory somewhere. So she had to look around for jobs that were for those generally unskilled people, drudgework, essentially.

However, most of the basic, monotonous tasks were menial, requiring a lot of strength and heavy lifting. In these, Kesu would be crushed beneath her load in an instant. So, there were two decisions left. One, find a job somewhere where she managed papers and such, in essence, a scribe. Two, find a job at someplace like the Red Lantern, which she did NOT wish to do. So, the course should've been relatively direct, or so she thought. Apparently, no one wanted a clerk or scribe, and could fulfill these jobs by themselves, without having to pay an unskilled, fiery Inarta to do it. And so, she had been left wandering around Surya Plaza, asking to no avail.

She had just come from a small, out-of-the way, probably largely unknown bookshop, inquiring within for a job, when she was rejected, once again. Stomping angrily into the street, she huffed, and looked around, and slumped, angrily dejected. It seemed that no place would have her work for them, and she didn't know where to go next.

Kesu

Aimlessly wandering the plaza now, wondering where she would go next, Kesu sat on a bench, sitting just outside the gardens before the steps of the Koten Temple. Thinking hard, she stared at the gardens, lost in thought. Suddenly, a young man, fit and trim, sat down next to her. Turning to him, she glared at the man with slight annoyance. She grimaced, and said in Common, "Excuse me, but who are you? I don't remember speaking to you before. So why are you speaking to me now?" The man's grin faded slightly, but he regained his cocksure smile as he began to speak again. "So I've heard that you've been asking around for a job, eh?" Casting him a withering glare, she crossed her arms, and said, "And what if I am? What could a total stranger offer me? Unless, of course, you were going to give me a job." The tanned man winked, and said, "Actually, that's exactly what I'm doing. Name's Anand. I'm not the one who would hire you, but I could point you in the right direction." With a snarky, pointed look, he continued, "That is, if you're interested in accepting help from a total stranger."

This sudden offer left Kesu struggling for words, and a flushed face. She was just so rude to this man, when all he was trying to do was help her. Trying to justify her actions, she thought, Well, if he wasn't so arrogant towards me, then I wouldn't dismiss him like that. Her pride satifsfied, she answered in common. "Well, I guess if you're willing to help me ... I suppose I can hear you out." The man smiled, as if he was waiting for this, and stood up, offering her his hand. Accepting it, she stood up, and removed her hand from his, "Let's hear it."

Kesu

With a jerk of his thumb, Anand pointed upwards at the Koten Temple. "I'm a Shinya guard, and I hear that Hanei Fen, up in the Registry, is looking for some kind of assistant." Curious, Kesu asked, "But tell me, why would you offer help to a complete stranger?" And raising her eyebrow quizzically, she said, "Are you some kind of .... uh, what's the word?" She frowned and thought for a moment. "Al-tru-ist?" The way she said it demonstrated that she didn't have a total grasp of common, even though she was proficient enough to hold a conversation. Anand looked surprised for a moment, then laughed uproariously, causing Kesu to flush bright red. "Hahah! No, miss, I'm not an altruist. I'm just trying to help you out. And even then, most of my help is up to you to accept!" Stroking his chin, he looked at her thoughtfully. "By the way, I didn't quite get your name, Miss..." He trailed off, looking at her expectantly.

Still a bit pink from her display of ignorance, Kesu grumbled and said, in Nari, "Kesu." Switching back to Common, she said, "Kesu, formerly of Wind Reach." Anand looked interested at the possible story behind this, but didn't pry, instead heading up a path towards the steps of the Koten Temple, Kesu following. "So my comrades who work in the Temple, they say that Hanei Fen is looking for some sort of scribe, or clerk to help him out in the Registry. And I have to admit, he's been doing a good job, but the records keep piling up. Apparently the backlog, or so I hear, is about thirty pages long." Wincing at the high amount, Kesu said, "So how do you know Hanei? And if you're a Shinya, why aren't you on duty?"

Anand's face brightened as he answered her question. "Well, you see, I don't actually know him all that well, but I do know a guard who is oftentimes posted by the door to the Registry. So I think that maybe if I introduce you to Mahavir, you'll have a reasonable alibi to talk to Hanei about the job." Raising her eyebrow, Kesu said, "You make it sound so sinister, like something that should be done in darkness, rather than just asking for a job." Anand laughed and replied, "No, I just don't think that you'd enjoy embarrassing yourself overmuch, now would you? And as for your second question, I'm not on duty right now. Tonight marks the first night I work the Leth shift on patrol! I'm excited to see how it'd work out!"

Frowning, Kesu asked, "Isn't that supposed to be pretty dangerous? Working the night shift?" Anand nodded, but laughed. "I might be young, but I'm still a Shinya, after all! We're the protectors of Zintila and her wondrous city! I can handle myself! Thank you for asking, though. Not many people appreciate how dangerous the city can be at night." Kesu shook her head and shivered. "Yeah, well, not long after I had arrived in Lhavit for the first time, it was night, and well, some unsavory characters were about. Lucky for us-" The word caught in her throat. Devon wasn't here. She shook her head vehemently. Back to talking. "Lucky for me, the Shinya were around to save me. Even so, I wish that the Shinya weren't needed." Anand shrugged, and said, "Unfortunately, that's not how the world works. In a perfect world, maybe, but this world is far from perfect."

Looking up at the steps of the Koten Temple, Skyglass shimmering in Syna's light. Turning to Kesu, Anand said, "The rest is up to you, now. Look for Mahavir. He's the one with the big scar across his face, and as bald as a baby's bottom on top. You can't miss him." Thanking Anand quietly, Kesu tensed. This was going to be hard for her. She'd have to mind her tongue, lest she not get the position. And even then, Hanei might choose someone more qualified, rather than a generally unskilled Inarta. But it was worth a shot, anyways.

Kesu

Walking up the stairway to the Temple, Kesu looked at the large, shimmering doors uncertainly. She didn't know if they would eject her from the temple on a minor detail, but hopefully this wouldn't be the case. Opening the door, and pushing it open, she stepped into the wide hallway, awed by the sight. She had seen it once before, when she registered herself, but it was still quite beautiful. Sighting the Shinya that Anand had pointed out, Kesu walked up to Mahavir, saying in Common, "Um, excuse me, sir. Is your name Mahavir? Because Anand told me to look for you, and said that you could introduce me to Hanei, and maybe help me get a job in the Registry."

The bald, scarred Shinya displayed no surprise at this. "So, he sent you, did he? I suppose it's about that assistant that Hanei's been needing, eh?" The Shinya guided her to the door of the Wizard Registry, smoothly gliding over the cold floor, heavy boots making no more noise other than a soft padding sound. Taking her past the line to Hanei's desk, Mahavir motioned at Kesu, and spoke in soft, clipped tones, "Hanei. This young lady is looking for a job. Please interview her, and either accept or reject her. I don't have any more time to spend helping her.

Hanei glanced up from his paperwork, mildly annoyed at the interruption to his work, but then smiled, and said, "Oh, alright, Mahavir. I'll take care of the woman after this line clears up. You know how it is, around this hour." He said this with a conspiratorial wink to Kesu, blatantly stating how he would 'take care' of her to the entire room. Motioning to a seat placed next to the desk, Hanei indicated Kesu to sit, and went back to his work, coolly and efficiently. Kesu, sat there flustered and angry at the man's flippant innuendo, steaming in her silent wrath, and barely keeping herself under control.

Four Bells Later...
After an inordinately long wait time, the last person in the line signed the document necessary for registry, and Hanei put down his quill pen, taking off his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. Putting them back on, Hanei turned to Kesu and glanced at her curiously, as if he hadn't expected her to wait this long. "So do you really need this job as my assistant that much, or is this just Inarta obstinacy?" Sputtering angrily, Kesu said, "Wh- why you- you little-" Growling a little, she then sighed, and said, scowl on her face, "Yes. I do. I need this job. No one else has an opening, and I'm NOT going to work in the Red Lantern." At this, Fen's eyebrows raised suggestively, and Kesu said, "Though, you'd like it if I did, wouldn't you?" Hanei laughed, and said, staring into her eyes, "I don't need to go to the Lantern to get my women."

Kesu, angered by this statement, said, "Are you some kind of... chao- chu-" Frustrated, she kicked the floor. "You know, that kind of man who doesn't hold any regard for women?" Grinning at the flustered Inarta, Hanei offered up, "Chauvinist?" Winking, he said, "And that doesn't mean what you think it means." Straightening the papers on his desk, and smoothing his clothing, Hanei said, in a silky smooth voice, and a slight grin on his face, "Shall we get started with the interview, miss?" Startled by the rapid change of pace, Kesu simply nodded, anger disappearing.

[The Wizard Registry] Time to Work

Kesu

Hanei dipped his quill in the inkwell and, in sweeping, fancy cursive, and wrote Kesu's name on the very top of the paper. Directly below it, and on the left side of the paper, he scratched out a stylistic '1'. Smiling at Kesu, he asked, polite and down to business, "So why do you want this job?" Shifting in her chair, somewhat uncomfortably, she said, "Well, either they already had a person doing the job, or they didn't want a woman as an assistant." Grumbling, and with a frown, she said, "I think it's because they didn't want an Inarta, really."

Smiling at her contritely, and marking something down on the paper, Hanei said, "Well, do you think that they might have a reason for that? Inarta are known for making a mess of things. I think it's due to all the fire in your blood." Growing red, she replied curtly. "I think it's because we don't tolerate stupidity in Wind Reach." Realizing that he was trying to bait her, she refused to say any more on the subject, and closing her mouth with a snap, she tried to put a blank look on her face. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction of getting a reaction out of her any more. Looking at Hanei, she saw he had a knowing smile, as if he had been waiting for her to figure it out.

Scribbling a few notes, he looked at her and said, "I know you have a decent signature, and passable handwriting." Holding up the papers she gave him last season, when she registered as a wizard, he let her glance at them before tucking them back away. "As soon as you came in for a second time, I looked at your Registry file." Hanei flashed a brilliant smile. "While there are quite a few Inarta in Lhavit, not many become wizards. From my first impression, you're a very down-to-business person, who is impatient with frippery from anyone." Kesu nodded, not trusting herself to not say anything foolish, but Hanei saw it in her eyes, grinning. "And you think that I'm a facetious ponce, don't you? Flushing, Kesu said, "Well- Hanei laughed, and said, "Don't worry, you can be straight with me. I don't need to hear anything less than the truth."

Marking something down, Hanei looked up and smiled, and held out his hand for Kesu to shake. Confused, she did so, and asked, "Why... are you shaking my hand?" Hanei just let go, and said, "Work starts on the Eighth." Even more confused and shocked, Kesu said, "Wait, what? You're hiring me?" This made no sense to the Inarta. They had barely started the interview, when he- "I needed someone honest with herself, and honest with others. Also, while you don't seem like the scrivening type, your handwriting is alright, and it isn't that hard to help with filing. Also, you'll most likely learn quickly." Another smile, but this time, it made her nervous. "Otherwise, I can't use you." Standing up and nodding, Kesu affirmed, "Yes, I will. I won't let you down, and I won't lose this job. Work starts on the Eighth. Got it." Nodding at Mahavir as she left, Kesu frowned as she thought of Hanei's cocksure attitude, but allowed herself a small, quick grin.

She had a job.
