His skin is as pale as his mother's, and with the freckles of his father. Yet his body has seen seasons of sickness. Loess lacks the stamina typical of an Inarta, the rugged energy Wind Reach requires of its people. He has short, auburn hair and light blue eyes. Beyond that and his average height, friends recognize no other similarity between him and his family. Many who know Loess consider him a runt, prone to exhaustion the body and mind.Character Concept and HistoryDue to Loess' small frame, he was not as suited to life in Wind Reach. The harsh, frigid elements of Wind Reach drained his stamina regularly, and he worried for his ability to provide for himself in the future. Inartan caste is decided on strength, most notably acknowledging those who survive well and master their lives. A anxious child, Loess adopted the cautiousness of his tripling sisters. He even avoided riding eagles. When other boys played daredevil, he learned glasswork from his uncle, or explored caves with his sisters.
On his eighth birthday, his mother gifted each of the triplets a family heirloom. Loess received his great grandfather's looking glass. Crafted from volcanic rock and some foreign metals, the mirror has seen over 100 years of . Its original masterwork, though, has been significantly weathered.
By age 15, he was quite proficient as glasswork. A relative offered him an apprenticeship in glasswork at the age of 13. But, over time, the three quarter year winters put him into a chilled depression. Lung disease's early stages started around the start of his apprenticeship, and Loess struggled to stay motivated in further developing his profession.
Loess holds on to one distinct, fond memory. The day after his 9th birthday, an eccentric trading vessel visited Skyinarta's single main port. It was highly decorated in sunny colored tapestries. A crowd of Inartan people traveled to exchange refined glass, and in many forms. This memory is still clear in his mind, partly due to the six-armed merchants on the boat, partly due to the enthusiasm of the Wind Reach artisans, and partly due to the fact that a young Inartan man begged to be taken on the vessel as an apprentice. The pale youth kneeled to one of the Eypharian merchants, and was surprisingly let aboard. Although permanently leaving Wind Reach is taboo among its citizens, Loess knew he someday might make the same choice as that young man. Let his sisters freeze on this rock.
Summer of 514, the sunny vessel returned; Loess abandoned his home. He offered the captain work for food and rest, even if that meant being a slave. Luckily, that wasn't necessary. The ship's Eypharian owner and Svefran captain allowed him to board. He would accompany a the team of merchants, helping seal deals and studying trades in his spare time. No wage was promised, as his residence would only be allowed if in a year's time he was up to the owner's standards. For now, Loess would be warmer, healthier, and, for the most part, safer.
