Sunberth.

The city of anarchy according to some. For Shakune, there was something familiar about the lawlessness of the place. There was always someone who could pick your pocket, stab you in the back or rape you, but it bought comfort to the half-breed. Sunberth had been the first city she had seen beyond Zeltiva, when she was a young girl of fourteen. As soon as the Lady Luck had docked, she had explored the city accompanied by her on-board family. Pa Salt, Leonard and Percy -- the three men she had met in Zeltiva and who had taken her away from the place. Only the former still remained in her life: Percy had left two years later, when the ship had docked in Riverfall and he had met a woman who was apparently the love of his life. Leonard caught a fever somewhere in the Ahger Ocean and now lay on the bottom of the sea, whatever the fish had left of him.

His death had been the first Shakune had experienced, and whenever she thought of her first time in Sunberth she couldn't help but mourn the scrawny, ratty-looking man.

She shook off the thought of death and climbed out of bed. She guessed it was close to midday; she always slept for a long time when on land, with a proper bed and proper covers. Pa Salt had given each of the crew enough mizas to afford four nights in an inn of their choosing. They had all agreed on the Drunken Fish, near the docks where they could socialise with their fellow sailors.

Her head ached, and Shakune counted back the number of pints she had drunk the night before; three, four, five, six... She stopped counted at eight and instead gulped from the tankard of water that stood on the floor beside her bed.

A tentative knock on the door distracted her, and Shakune pulled away from the tankard, water dripping down her chin. Gulping, she gave a mangled "come in", expecting one of the crew to appear at the doorway.

It was, in fact, a complete stranger.

"Shyke" Shakune muttered, suddenly aware of her nakedness. The crew had all seen it before; there was no such thing as modesty on a ship, but she knew that strangers were less comfortable with casual nudity.

The young girl blushed and turned sharply away, showing Shakune her back whilst the half-breed covered herself with the bed covers. "Good afternoon, Miss Shakune. I have something for you." She leant out the door and to Shakune's horror, a huge brute of a man stomped into her room, carrying a small chest. He dropped it to the floor with a metallic clunk.

She inspected the chest with a frown, trying to recall whether she had won it in a drunken bet last night. When the girl nor the man explained further, Shakune gave a dazed "thank you." and they both left.

Standing, Shakune returned to her naked form and padded to the chest. It was simple, with no elegant design to it, and not even a lock. She lifted the lid, and almost fainted.

"Money." Her fingers traced upon the surface of the coins, shifting a few so they rubbed against each other with a faint steely noise. She had no idea how many mizas lay in the chest, but as Shakune plunged her hand into the coins to check the depth, the number in her head doubled, then tripled. Never before had she seen so much money in one place.

What happened last night?

There was a piece of parchment lying on top of the coins, and only now did Shakune notice it. Picking the piece up, she inspected it carefully. One side was blank, but the other side had two letters written in neat handwriting:

P. S.

Pa Salt, without a doubt. The old man had always said that he could barely write a sentence down, so his signature was a simple P S.

Still feeling a little drunk, Shakune stumbled out of her room and into the hallway. She had fortunately remembered to wrap the bedcover around herself, but that did not stop the young boy sweeping the floor to give her a strange look. After reaching her destination - room five - Shakune pushed the door open.

She greeted by a bare, hairy arse.

"Russell."

Her shipmate stood up straight and turned to face her, equally as naked as she was under her cover. His face was bright, like a child's, with a smile so wide it looked as if his face might split in half. At his feet was a chest exactly like Shakune's, also packed with gold coins. "Shakune. I'm rich!" His voice cracked with laughter, and he jumped around delightedly, cock flapping noisily against his thigh.

Shakune's frown deepened, her stomach twisting -- though whether from the alcohol or the growing unease, she wasn't sure. "Yeah, me too." She replied faintly, which caused Russell to stop celebrating at once.

"Y'what?"

"I got a chest too," Shakune snapped, finally closing the door and allowing the cover to drop from her bare shoulders. "Did that girl drop it off?"

Russell shook his head, shaggy hair brushing his shoulders. "Nah, it was here when I woke up, which was about twen'y chimes ago. I've been countin' it."

The explained the small stack of coins to one side of the chest, which Shakune now eyed. "And? How much?"

"I lost count--" his admission came with a grin that the half-breed did not understand until he finished his sentence, "--after one hundred and fourteen."

Even Shakune staggered backwards. She mouthed the amount again - one hundred and fourteen gold mizas, and still counting... or not, as it turned out. With a little shake of her head, Shakune tried to stop her mind floating away to whatever land Russell was clearly the king of right now. He was dancing again.

She was about to tell him stop, when the door opened and almost knocked her over.

"Russell? Guess what the fuck's happ- Shakune! Guess what?"

Richard's chubby form stood at the doorway, thankfully dressed. He was younger than Shakune by three years, but the lad could make a meal out of practically any selection of ingredients. He'd been with the crew for two seasons, and they had never eaten better than in his company.

"Money? Me too!" Russell gestured down to the chest, bent over - Shakune looked sharply away from his drooping testicles with mild disgust - and began to throw gold coins in the air. Richard joined him in dancing, potbelly jiggling along with their imaginary music.

Shakune watched them both, feeling strange and uncomfortable about the whole situation. "We should find Johnny." She muttered, and then repeated the order louder. When neither Russell or Richard reacted, she stomped her foot demandingly. That caught both men's attention, and they looked at her with questioning expressions. "Johnny." The name was spoken dangerously slowly.

The three of them left Russell's room and marched down the hallway, Shakune wrapped tightly in her covers whilst Russell continued to dance energetically, every so often revealing his genitals and wiggling them.

Their fourth shipmate was still asleep, but the chest lay beside his bed unopened. To Shakune's relief, he seemed equally perturbed by it all. "I don't understand. If it's from Pa, why give it to us now?"

They discussed the possibilities; the old man had always been an enigma, with strange habits and thought processes that nobody quite understood but everyone appreciated. Once, in Riverfall, he had given a young mother enough money to open up her own bakery. Three years down the line, and he still received all the free bread and cakes he could ever want. Perhaps Pa Salt had made far more profit from his business dealings in the past year than he had expected to, and shared the surplus with his crew?

"Wouldn't make sense," Johnny dismissed, "it would take a lot of muscle to shift that much coin from the dock to our rooms. Why bother when we're leaving in a few days?"

Something made Shakune's spine tingle, but she ignored it. "Good point." She said stiffly, chewing her lip as she thought.

The three men eventually came to the decision that their minds would work better once they'd eaten breakfast, which Shakune was forced to agree to. After Russell left to get dressed, and Richard departed to investigate what type of sausages the inn would be serving, it was only Shakune and Johnny left in the room. He was approximately forty-three years old, though the Vantha stated that he did not know his actual birthdate. He had been with Shakune and Pa Salt for nearly five years; the longest anyone had stayed, second only to Shakune as far as she knew.

They were silent for some time, with Shakune wanting to pick his brain for more ideas but fearful of what he might say. Pa Salt reckoned that Johnny was one of the smartest men he'd come across, and Shakune did not disagree. But he had a habit of saying his thoughts without consideration of what others might think. The reason that Lya, the last female member of the crew, had left was because of Johnny's severe tongue. Regardless of his brutality, Shakune knew that if any of them were to be able to guess the truth, it would be him. "What do you think happened, John?"

He shot her a rue smile, as if he knew what was on her mind. "Who says anythin' about sum'it happenin'?" He stretched noisily and began to dress himself. Shakune's black eyes did not leave him. "I dun'know any more than you, Shaki. We'll have to see."

His soft tone, the use of his pet name for her - Shaki - returned Shakune to the past, on that first night together when Pa Salt was occupied with business and had left the two of them to watch the ship. They had jumped onto each other almost as soon as the older man had left, as if some unspeakable law had finally been withdrawn. Their sexual relationship had been dirty, almost incestuous, and unfathomably desperate. It broke Pa Salt's only rule; sex and love on the ship never ended well for those involved. But it hadn't been love, would never be love. What happened between Shakune and Johnny was nothing but animalistic, pent up tension that had finally been released. Of course, it did not happen on just the one occasion. They could not be left alone together without ripping and scratching at shirts and belts, and if one of them were angry, depressed or stressed, the other would become their metaphorical punching bag. Shakune was a therapy for Johnny, and vice versa. The extremes of any emotion were resolved by their desperate fondling of each other in search of some answer.

Shakune was touching him now, her fingers tracing his scars and muscles, seeking out that familiar therapy. She was anxious, perturbed by what had happened this morning and there was only way she knew how to deal with such emotion. He responded, as he always did, and mere ticks later they were grunting and moaning desperately together, toes curling and eyes rolling in pleasure and relief. When it was over, Shakune left without a word. For once, sex had not been the cure.

"The ship's gone."

When Richard first said it, Russell elbowed him sharply in the podgy side. But the larger man did not let up; he repeated the gloomy sentence over and over until the four of them stood at the dock, staring at the crowded docks and into the sea beyond, where white sails peppered the sea spray.

The ship had gone, and Shakune subsequently wanted to vomit up the greasy breakfast she had just ingested. The eggs and bacon swirled in her stomach and she staggered to one side, catching her breath by clinging onto a nearby barrel. "The ship's gone." She told herself, words barely a whisper.

Johnny was at her side, with the other two. All three looked concerned, by Johnny the most. He was running his hands through his greying hair; a sign that he was stressed. "It can't have gone far"

"It's a ruddy boat, mate." Russell muttered quietly, earning himself a hard stare from Johnny.

"Why would he leave me?" Shakune begged the question, staring at the faces of her comrades with desperation. They had all somehow depended on Pa Salt - namely by their income and attaining food - but she needed him for other reasons. He had been the absolute centre of her existence since she met him as a girl on the docks of Zeltiva. He'd been kind, giving her a loaf of bread even when she told him that she wasn't hungry and was just naturally very skinny. Their friendship had progressed quickly, and within days Shakune was familiar with his boat and his current crew. There had never been anything uncomfortable about their relationship, despite the raised eyebrows and nasty rumours. She had finally found some to parent her, not like her mother when she passively told Shakune Chaktawen stories in hopes that her daughter would learn their meaning on her own. Pa Salt had filled that void that Shakune had always missed: an active parent.

So he couldn't have just left her, not when he had practically raised her. It was out of the question, beyond reality, and most of all it went against his promise to always be there for her: "I'm not going to leave you, Shakune. Dira herself will have to drag me away."

It was then that the quiet reality dawned on Shakune. For several chimes she remained silent, numb and very raw. Then finally, she decided that she needed to tell the others: "He's dead."

They all turned towards her, surprised but not completely shocked. They had come to the same grisly conclusion, but what had startled them was that she had been the first one to say it. Regardless of what they said about her rough nature, all her fellow shipmates knew that when it came to Pa Salt, Shakune was vulnerable. He was her ultimate weakness, the entity that had always kept her strung together.

Now she finally understood Pa Salt's mind. "He'd rather die than leave his boat. You all know that. But he wouldn't want us to see him die, especially me. But he couldn't leave me on land and go on with the rest of you because he'd know that would destroy me." Her voice cracked and Shakune frowned, determined to win out over her own sudden grief. "He knew that he was dying, and soon. That's why he gave us the money. So we wouldn't be lost without him. But he couldn't leave her, not the Lady."

In the silence that followed, all three men came to terms with the truth that Shakune had just spoken. Everything had come together and made perfect sense: Pa Salt was generous, loving, but proud. He would never have allowed anyone to see him at his weakest moment, but he would not want to abandon his crew either. He would meet death on his own terms.

"Well." Richard said at last.

They all echoed him:

"Well."

"Well."

"Well."

They must have sat in the tavern for bells. When Shakune looked out of the window, Syna was beginning her slow descent. The sky was pink and orange. It looked pretty.

Four tankards sat on their table, almost all untouched. She could not remember the last words that were said, or who had spoken them. The tavern waitress had given up on asking whether they wanted anything a while ago, and now she watched them with an even gaze.

Richard stirred, picked up his tankard and put it straight back down. "What now?" He sounded exhausted.

The others all looked at each other and shrugged in unison. "I dunno." Russell replied quietly.

"I'm going to buy a house." Shakune barely recognised her voice, but when she repeated her statement her words sounded more sure and clear, "I'll buy a house with my share of the money. Here, in Sunberth."

She expected the others to join in with the sentiment, but Richard looked terrified at the mere idea of residing in Sunberth. Russell and Johnny's reactions were no better. "It's where he lived." She deplored, now worried that they would leave her too.

Now Russell looked guilty. He gave a crooked smile and patted her hand affectionately. "I know it is. But... what does it hold for us here?"

"I don't know!" Her reaction was explosive and she retracted her hand away from Russell's gentle touch. Shakune had no clue what was to happen to her now, but she did know that she had to remain to Sunberth, at least for the foreseeable future. But what life would she make for herself? The idea of finding another captain, another ship, was abhorrent. It made her want to vomit. Such an act would be blasphemous. "We can do whatever we want."

Their smiles told Shakune that 'we' no longer existed. Her heart pattered pathetically in her chest as for the second time that day, Shakune realised that she had lost her family. "You're not going to stay, are you?" Her black eyes endlessly searched each of their faces in turn: Russell, Richard and finally Johnny.

"I have a sister in Syliras. It's about time I visited her. This money could do her family a lot of good."

"Riverfall is meant to be a good place, with nice restaurants and inns. I could get a job as a chef there."

Finally she awaited Johnny's response. She had known him the longest, and even ignoring the more complicated aspects of their relationship, she could not imagine being without him. "And you?"

He was going to leave too. She knew this as soon as he smiled falsely at her and promised: "I can't leave you all alone, can I?"

Richard left first. He caught wind of a horse cart travelling to Riverfall within three days of Pa Salt's death and joined the brigade. Whilst he promised that any of the crew (the crew that was, Shakune started to poisonously call them in her mind) could visit him, she doubted that she would ever see Richard again. Would she even want to?

She purchased her home in the Sunset Quarter five days after Richard left. It was a modest, shack of a place really, but Shakune took to it happily enough. Russell and Johnny resided in the tiny place with her, and with no Pa Salt to observe their closeness disapprovingly, Shakune and Johnny made their alternate relationship public.

To their surprise, Russell merely shrugged. "Yer not exactly quiet during those intimate moments, Shakune."

He left half way through the season, on a cargo cart to Syliras to reunite with his long lost sister.

Shakune thus found herself in a strange limbo. She and Johnny lived together, slept together. They explored Sunberth and even went swimming together. It was on one such occasion, when they were shoulder-deep in the ocean water, that Johnny finally made his admission.

They were naked, her long legs wrapped around his waist whilst Shakune's upper body floated serenely on the water surface. His hands were scooping water and washing handfuls of it over Shakune's sleek body as he spoke hesitantly, "I think I know what I'm going to do with my share of the money."

Shakune's back curved up sharply and she faced Johnny, legs still entwined around him. He had been trying to bring up this topic over the past few days, and each time Shakune had silenced him with some type of sexual activity.

If you think coming out here is going to stop me....

She began grinding herself against him, smiled when she felt his body stiffen in response.

But Johnny's expression hardened as well. "Shaki. I've found another ship. Come with me, to Avanthal." Silence. Shakune continued to rub and grind, and when his body was fully ready to, she slid herself onto him. Immediately they both moaned. If the tide were any stronger, they'd practically drown.

"Shakune." He spluttered, between aroused gasps and mouthfuls of saltwater. "You can't just stay here. How will you survive?"

She moved faster, more determinedly. With all the stubbornness and desperation in the world, Shakune willed for their conversation to end, for time to stop moving. Whatever boat Johnny had discovered, she wanted it to sink. She wanted Avanthal itself to crumble into the sea. Her fingers clawed down his back deeply.

"Please. We can't stay here. I have to go back. You know why. It was always my plan to return."

Ah, yes. Johnny's wife and two children, who all predated his time aboard the Lady Luck. Shakune had started out denying their existence whenever Johnny shared her bed, but over the years she came to regard them like pests that simply refused to leave. Why would he invite her to Avanthal if he was returning to his family? To be his dirty mistress?

"Shakune. I'm leaving in two days time." His sentence was mangled by his orgasm, and those final words were spurted out just as he pulled Shakune close to him and shivered inside her.

She allowed him to hold her for several chimes, until the bottomless pit in her stomach had been filled with rage and upset. When Shakune pulled herself away, Johnny's face was creased with anguish. No words were exchanged between them as they swam to the shore, dressed, and returned to Shakune's home.

In fact, they barely spoke to each other for the next two days. When Johnny departed for his homeland, Shakune went rigid as he hugged and kissed her lips.

OOC :
Pa Salt is based on a character of the same name in the book The Seven Sisters but Lucinda Riley. It was pretty good, I recommend it :)
