You don’t need a silver spoon to eat good food 002. Personality Likes: Food, learning new recipes Dislikes: Meeting new people, social interactions Ethics: Lawful and good His heart is in the right place Orin is an aspiring chef. He has always been fascinated by food. While he isn’t always the best with other people and he’s certainly not close to being bright intellectually speaking, he takes a joy in cooking and the ability it has to bring others together. Naturally shy and a little self-conscious, he only really comes to life in the kitchen. However, other than this, he is socially awkward and has trouble connecting with people. His friendship, once earned, however, is almost never lost and he is fiercely loyal to his few friends. Orin does his best to avoid confrontation, especially physical confrontation. He is afraid of breaking the rules and obedient even to a fault. While some people tease him for this, he is unwavering in his belief in the laws. He is generally a morally good person. While he doesn’t always get along with others usually due to his shyness, he almost never says an unkind word and shares what little he has with those in need. He is extremely slow to anger, and often lets others insult him more than would be expected. He is also quick to forgive. All this combined made him a favorite target of bullies, since he would never be able to effectively respond back. He is a bit naïve in the ways of the world, but he has seen more than his share of tragedy. Orin's natural optimism and general mental health took a severe blow after the severing of his Kelvic bond. While he does his best to remain as stable as possible, anything other that work and trying to numb himself through physical training so his emotions are less palpable has lost its appeal. Still, given time, he may regain his once sunny disposition, perhaps even stronger than before. The people who give you their food give you their heart 003. History He never looks back only forward Orin was an only child whose mother died in childbirth. His father, a farmer, was heartbroken after she died, and couldn't bear Orin, seeing as Orin reminded his father too much of his mother. Therefore, he never interacted much with his father. He ended up being basically raised communally, as he was foisted off on whoever had the time and inclination to babysit him while his father was working. This occasionally caused resentment among the other children, who didn't see why he deserved such treatment. Being naturally shy didn’t help much either. His favorite memories are from the kitchens of the women looking after him. While he was usually too small to do much, he did what he could. He washed dishes, fetched pots and pans, and ran small errands. He was often asked to taste the dishes and soon began making small suggestions and additions of his own. This made him very popular, and soon he was being taught many of the local recipes. However, his father disapproved of his budding interest, and did his best to make his disapproval known. Usually this resulted in beatings, partially mental, but mostly physical. His father also took to drinking after his mother died, which certainly didn’t help matter. His father felt that cooking was not an appropriate activity for a boy or man. The women took pity on him, and continued his lessons in secret as much as possible. His father’s actions were overlooked since they took place in the privacy of his own home and he never beat Orin so badly that he needed medical attention. When Orin was 13, his father came in stinking drunk one evening. Unfortunately, Orin had been experimenting in the kitchen and hadn’t heard his father coming in. He was caught red handed. In a towering rage, Orin’s father gave him the worst beating he had ever given Orin, and threw him out to sleep outside that night. In an ironic twist of fate, this ended up saving Orin’s life, since his father passed out without banking the fire, and Orin’s house burned down. Orin had to watch this happening in front of his eyes, and despite the best efforts of the neighbors and the authorities, Orin’s father died in the fire. For a few years after that, Orin was passed from household to household. However, it soon became apparent that this arrangement could only continue temporarily. Eventually, Orin was deemed old enough to make a living on his own, and gently, but firmly, sent out of the outpost with just the most basic of supplies. Having no where else to go, Orin made his way to Syliras with a friendly group of travellers where he hoped he could find a place where his skills would be appreciated. Orin spent several seasons in Syliras, starting in Winter 515, building friendships, honing his skills, and even eventually bonding with a Kelvic, Sylvette. Unfortunately, tensions came to a head at his work, and Orin decided to leave the city, traveling to lands unknown. In Spring 515, He boarded a ship to Abura, along with a contingent of Syliran Knights. Unfortunately, not only did the knights abandoned their quest, Orin was eventually forced to sever his bond with Sylvette, leaving him stranded and alone in a land that didn't appreciate him or his skills. Having his bond broken, along with the traumas of his past, has left him severely mentally unbalanced. Moving to Riverfall in Summer of 516, Orin attempted to make a new start for himself, even landing a dream job at the prestigious Almond Blossom. But, his depression and mental instability, as well as his difficulty in forming new friendships after losing Sylvette, has made it difficult for the chef to establish Riverfall as his new home. |
