Potentially stupid question: Svefra swimming racial

Postby Roderick on February 19th, 2015, 2:21 am

So first I'd like to apologise if someone has already asked this question before.

Now while reading over the Svefra race lore it clearly states that they practically throw their children into the sea right after they are born and that they are all excellent swimmers. The issue here though is that from what I've seen Svefra PCs still have to have points in swimming. While I can understand something like that, it stops making sense when you take into account the fact the Charoda are automatically considered to be proficient in swimming. Since both of these races spend so much time swimming and are both stated to be very closely linked to the sea, why does one of them have to practice their swimming skills?

Again I'm sorry if I missed a previous post about this or something the founders have posted regarding it.

Potentially stupid question: Svefra swimming racial

Postby Matthew on February 19th, 2015, 2:36 am

This thread may shine some light on it. I have awarded swimming XP to a Konti before without knowing about this and she pointed out my mistake. So, instead of awarding swimming, I just awarded Endurance. With the way she had described the swimming, it made sense that it would increase her Endurance. This way, you award them something that is appropriate for what the character performed. Obviously the Grader should use good judgement, and not just hand out Endurance or Acrobatic XP for a Charoda who puts basic, instinctive swimming skills to use.

Even if points in Swimming slip past, I've always reasoned that two Charoda or two Konti could determine who was the better swimmer by comparing their two Swimming skill levels. Therefor, it still has some meaning when it comes to mechanics.

When it comes to the difference between Charoda and Svefra, I would say that it is because one has the skill born into them and a body designed for it. The other, although normally forced to learn at a very young age, is still forced to learn.

Also, in the future, I would use this forum for questions. This forum is more for the discussion of lore articles in an early development phase, if that makes sense.
