Short/Medium Term

Maintain friendships: Devi makes acquaintances very easily but tends to drift from people just as easily. One of her goals is to not only meet new people in Syliras but to actually maintain friendships with a few of them.
Questionable Ethics: I'm not entirely sure how yet but I want to throw Devi into situations which causes her to question her ethics. Possibly...
Combat: Devi's a doctor so she's used to healing and preserving life. She's edged into training her martial skills as a bit of a challenge to herself, to try something different, but it would be good to put her into some actual combat so she faces the possibility of taking life.
Get Religion: Obtain lores about Priskil.
Obtain some kind of apprentice or assistant: Devi needs more sleep and possibly an extra set of arms. It would be beneficial for her to have some form of help in her current day-to-day.
Medical records: Devi has started keeping detailed journals on any medicine/herbalism/poison related information she comes across in her day to day with a mind to build up a comprehensive record of doctoring over her lifetime. Any contribution to this, in any form, would always be appreciated.

Longer Term Goals

These are likely to be amended the further Devi develops, as her path and priorities change.

Devi's Clinic: Devi wants to be able to open her own clinic so that she can more easily treat longer-term conditions and so that she can offer surgical services when required to.
Push for the creation of Syliras Hospital: Devi feels that it's vital for the city to have a centralised medical facility, something capable of dealing with widescale injury and disease. She also feels it would aid in improving the overall health and longevity of Sylirans.
Romance: It doesn't need to be love but Devi's unlikely to encourage a purely casual relationship. IC she's convinced that she'll never hold someone's affections long enough for anything meaningful to cement. She'd never admit how much she really wants that for herself.
Have a child: Devi doesn't know this yet. She would be horrified at the very thought of being responsible for the full time care of a tiny person. Again, it doesn't have to be textbook-happy-family. She's going there eventually though.
Expansion on medical records: Create a medical library in Syliras - when Devi gets to the point at which she has a number of journals and her home is overflowing with bits and pieces of information she's picked up then she'll up her ambitions from simply keeping medical records to pulling together a medical library. Such a task will require more in depth study, travel and more expensive/dangerous undertakings in order to fulfil.
Learn more about healing non-humans: Devi likes learning anything new, particularly when it is related to her native field. However her supply of non-human patients in Syliras isn't especially prolific. She may well need to travel in order to come across her counterparts in other races.

Personal Relationships

Special
These people don't fit into any pre-determined group. They are who they are - I don't think my life would be the same without them in it.

Ronan - NPC - Brother

Ronan is just about the warmest person I've met. He treasures his family and would give anything and everything to keep them happy and healthy. I will always owe him a debt for that, for keeping me on the right path when our father died. I repay him by adding a little mischief into his otherwise responsible and tidy little life. He's far too serious sometimes...

Image

Marianne - NPC - Sister-in-Law

Mari isn't exactly someone I'd choose to have in my life if the decision were solely mine. She's a lot of work (Yikes... don't tell her I said that.) and doesn't appreciate a lot of the decisions I've made about my life. Even so, in recent years I think the kids have tempered her a bit. We've had occasional moments in which I think I might actually be starting to like her (Don't tell her that either.).

Image

The Kids! - NPCs

Nieces and Nephew - Florinne, Marcus and Serina

These three are my world, from Flo-storm running around the city with me and leaving mischief and destruction in her wake, to Marcus sitting quietly and dreaming away, to tiny little Serina, who looks so much like her mother already. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Image ImageImage

Nate - NPC

Image

Rhavu - Nightwalker Horse

Rhavu is an incredibly intuitive companion. His previous owner trained him well but pulled him around a little too much for his liking it seems - he prefers signals from his rider's body rather than being yanked this way and that by his bit. This Nightwalker has a presence and a half so you'd better believe he'll let you know if you're doing anything he doesn't like.

Friends
These are the few people that, despite my expectations, have grown in my heart to the point that I call them my friends.

Sayana

Sayana used to be the very definition of vibrant. So full of life and love and laughter. With everything that happened... I'm not really sure who she is anymore. I have to believe that some echo of my friend is still in there though. I owe her that much at least, don't I?

Image

More :
Met: Winter 18, 514AV at her apartment. Garland sought Devi out when it became clear that Sayana would need medical assistance in order to heal.

Garland

Garland is exactly what I don't expect of the Syliran Knighthood. He's an big kid in a suit of armour with a penchant for mischief and mayhem. That said, he can be incredibly responsible when he needs to be. He cares deeply for the important people in his life and is loyal as anyone I've met, to a fault at times. Our respective duties keep us each busy (his now including some very active kids) but I would always consider Garland to be a friend.

Image

More :
Met: Winter 11 415AV - Garland sought Devi's assistance to treat the children of the Syliras Orphanage (Ailing, Tiny and Tireless)

Acquaintances
A meet a lot of people in my day to day life, as is natural in the city. There are some that stand out though, some that might turn out to be something more (or indeed less).

Elann

Elann is a beautiful young Benshiran woman who sought my help with an old burn scar. Although she must have been quite daunted at the prospect of living in Syliras after a life with her family, she seemed quite eager to embrace it.

More :
Met: Summer 30, 515AV. (Travelling Doctor) Elann sought out Devi's services to tend to an old burn wound.

Old Acquaintances
Though I remember these people for one reason or another, memory of them fades as I see them less and less.

Rhov
Rhov was... interesting. A prickly conversation partner to say the least. I hope his forays into the cage don't offer him a trip to the undertakers rather than to my doorstep.

More :
Met: Spring 12, 515 A.V in Devi's apartment when Rhov turned up seeking medical attention.

Orin Fenix

Orin was sweet and honest, though he apologised far more than was good for him. I hope that wherever he is now, he's happy. I miss him.

More :
Met: Winter 92, 514AV at Sayana's New Year's Party. Orin was the chef and later that evening suffered a bad knock to the head.

Sylvette Sciath
Considering she was naked the first time we met, I think I handled the situation quite well. No - considering she was a ginger cat when we first met and then a naked woman I think I handled the situation quite well.

More :
Met: Evening of 41 Winter, 515AV in Soothing Waters with Orin.

Lorden Ladis
Lorden is unusual. Having met just the once I couldn't say I know much about him yet, other than that he has a great deal of faith in the Knighthood. To listen to him speak he's idealistic, for a knight. Nothing he has done so far has been contrary to that at least.

More :
Met: Though they saw each other at Sayana's New Year's Party, Winter 92 514AV, they only really spoke the day after, Spring 1 515AV, whilst they transported a semi-conscious Orin to Soothing Waters for treatment.

Autumn Wilde

Autumn was beautiful and full of life even when she was bed-bound with illness. She seemed a little naive perhaps but I enjoyed talking with her. I hadn't seen her for a while but a chance meeting in the theatre district gave us plenty to talk about.

More :
Met: Winter 22, 514AV. Ronan helped Autumn, who collapsed in the street from illness, to get back to her apartment and fetched Devi to treat her. (A Helping Hand)

Devi's Plotnotes

Character Development Questions

General Information :
1. What is your Name? Deviana Helena Blackwood. Mostly just Devi. Or 'Doctor, help! So-and-so's coughing up his own lung!'

2. Do you go by a nickname or pet name? None, or at least none that I know of…

3. How old are you? 23

4. What is your height? 5ft 4 / 157cm

5. What is your weight? 120 pounds / 8 ½ stone / 55kg

Aesthetics :
1. Describe yourself as you see yourself - I’m fairly petite I suppose. Slender. Pale as anything with auburn hair and dark green eyes. I’m not really certain what else to say - I don’t really pay much mind to my own physical features.

2. Describe yourself as others typically see you - Probably far too serious. I’ve heard I look quite different when I’m not working or studying. There’s just something about encountering bodily fluids in my day to day that does not make me want to smile though.

3. What is your favorite body feature? My hair. It’s long, thick and I wouldn’t change the colour for the world.

4. How physically fit are you? I probably spend more time walking around the city than actually treating people in it. I’m not in fighting shape or anything but I’m certainly not soft.

5. How do you typically dress and what is your style? My clothes are usually practical, out of necessity than anything else. Still, I try and make sure whatever it is, it’s figure-hugging. Curves are one of the only things that make me feel especially feminine and I don’t regret taking advantage of that fact. Frequently.

Family :
1. Who are your parents and what are they like? My mother died giving birth to me, my father committed suicide when I turned 13. My father became more and more distant later in his life. We'd have moments where he could make me laugh and seemed more like the father that family friends have described to me but for the most part he just went through the motions of living. My mother I've only really gotten to know through her herbalist's journals. She's very special to me though - she seems like she was a wholly caring person. I feel like I'm starting to understand why my father missed her so.

2. Do you have any brothers or sisters? One older brother, Ronan. He's a blacksmith in the small family smithy. He had to grow up pretty quickly, with our father acting as he was. He always took care of me though, always knows the right thing to say. He's so warm with his family, with everyone, that you'd never realise what a short childhood he really had. I trust him implicitly.

3. What is your extended family like? I don't know if we even have any to be honest. My father never spoke of siblings or cousins, on either side. As far as I'm aware any grandparents have already passed. It's not something I've ever really pursued to be honest - Ronan is all the family I need.

4. Do you consider close friends as important or more/less important than family? Noone is as important to me as Ronan is. Still he is the only family I really have (his wife and children aside) so I would consider close friends as important. Well, I imagine I would if I had any close friends. I'm not really coming across well in this, am I?

5. Do you treat animals like family? No. Especially not cats. Who likes cats?!

Location :
1. Where were you born? Syliras.

2. Where do you live now? Syliras. Are you sensing a pattern?

3. If you could live anywhere in Mizahar where would that be? I... honestly don't know. I think my only prerequisites would be somewhere warm. Possibly also somewhere I can ogle Akalak without too much stigma (though I've heard Riverfall's seasons are much the same as Syliras').

4. Do you have a favorite place to vacation or spend leisure time? I'm sorry, vacation? Leisure time?

5. Where do you fear to be? Caged. Out of control. Physically? I haven't really come across anywhere I'd truly fear to be. Not yet in any case.

Traits :
1. Do you have any physical weaknesses (disease, scars, and missing limbs?) Not yet.
2. Are you right handed or left handed? Right
3. What languages do you speak? What do you sound like? Do you have an accent? Common and Tukant. I'm fairly certain I butcher the Akalak accent but I would consider that their fault for having such a complicated dialect.
4. Do you have any odd mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics? Depends who you ask. (Don't ask Ronan.) I clean a lot, that tends to annoy people. I tend to get caught up in my own thoughts too, just going through the motions whilst something plays around in my head.
5. Do you have (or want to get) any tattoos or piercing? Why do you have them (or will get them)? Even the thought makes me shudder. I've seen far too many infections from dirty needles to consider that.

Occupations :
1. What is your occupation? Doctor
2. Do you like/dislike your work? Why? I love it. Sometimes I hate it. They say love and hate are equal passions. Either way it's my life. It's holding someone else's life in your hands, keeping families together or watching them fall apart. It's powerful and humble all at once.
3. If you could be anything you wanted to, what would you be? Honestly? A doctor. Possibly a doctor with her own extensive and well-equipped infirmary.
4. What occupation do you admire the most? Why? My own aside, I think blacksmithing. It seems a strange answer but it holds a special place in my heart. Ronan makes it an honourable occupation, a simple one. A good day's work to him means sweat and hard work. The things he helps make keep people safe, structure buildings, keep everyday life going. I guess all those long speeches he gives about it really have sunk in.
5. What occupation do you least like? Why? Any that involve the intentional pain or death of another, particularly where they do so for no other reason than money.

Childhood :
1. What sort of child were you? A boring one, apparently. I spent most of my time following Versin around asking endless questions about diseases. I found it interesting at least but that's not a popular opinion. I liked to explore a lot, liked being outside and in the open whenever I could, as little open space as there is around Syliras. Ronan always said I aged him, all the times I would disappear with him worrying about me. He exaggerates. Maybe.
2. What is your favorite memory from childhood? There was a spot I used to hide out a lot, near the Maiden district so not too far from home. Lots of people set up market stalls there that spilled into the open street. I used to like sitting there, watching people coming and going, buying and selling wares of all kinds. Ronan would always find me and together we'd just sit and point out any unusual people we could see. Sometimes he would tell me what he remembered of our mother, which admittedly wasn't much. Every detail was precious though.
3. What is your worst memory from childhood? I was the one that found my father when he... decided to end things. He had been drinking a lot then, more than he had been before. Judging by the number of bottles scattered throughout the apartment this had been a particularly bad day. I had been out with Versin for hours, far longer than usual. Ronan was always home late - he always got us food and supplies after he finished up at the smithy. I found him curled up on the floor, pale as snow in a large pool of his own blood. I suppose now that the initial slice could have been an accident - there were utensils off the shelves as if he had been preparing to cook. Still the end result was- Well. Let's just say there's a reason I have a strong stomach.
4. What sort of relationship did you have with your parents? I never knew my mother but what I could gain from reading her journal. Her personality bled through the words written there though. She seemed to me to be utterly selfless. I suppose part of that is my own idolisation of her but still, it inspires me. My father was distant. I don't think I ever really knew him, despite the years we lived under the same roof.
5. Who was your most influential rolemodel? I would consider Ronan to be the most important person in my upbringing, though I suppose the person who had the most impact on my life and who I am is Versin. He fascinated me from the first conversation we had. I dogged his steps for half a season until he finally gave in and started actually answering my questions. He taught me how to heal people without any special abilities, with just my own two hands and what I could pack in a bag. He gave me a different perspective of things than Ronan had. More cynical perhaps but no less relevant.

Education :
1. What sort of education do you have? A fairly good one, considering. Ronan was always bright at school so he helped me as much as he could whenever I had questions growing up (and I had a lot of them). Versin was a stickler for details and dedication though - it's him that's primarily responsible for my fair standard of education.
2. Do you like/dislike learning? I love it. I think I reached a point where it became apparent just what might have become of me without the knowledge I have today. It made me appreciate just how precious even small details are.
3. Where or how did you learn most of your skills/abilities? Versin - the man had a mind like a sponge and a tongue like a whip. You got the answers to his questions right or you heard about it in every scathing remark he made for the rest of the season. And the next.
4. How do you learn best? I can learn a certain amount by simply reading or listening but better by actually doing something or applying it to a real situation. At the very least I need someone as a sounding board for discussion when I learn.
5. What are your educational goals for the future? I'll always be a student of Medicine and then, naturally, of herbalism and poisons. Otherwise it would depend on what I'm aiming for. At the moment I'm not really sure what that is.

Relationships - TBC :
1. Do you form close bonds with people? Why? Why not? I tend not to, though not really out of choice. I'm busy, people drift. Noone but Ronan has really seemed to stick.
2. Do you trust people easily? If not, why not? Hm. Interesting question. A skin-deep level of trust? I suppose I believe that everyone deserves at least one chance. Beyond that, no. A lot of the time I'm an utter cynic about trusting people.
3. Do you consider yourself straight, gay, bi, or something else? Straight.
4. Have you ever been kissed? If so, describe the first time. TBC
5. Have you ever had sex? If so, describe the first time. TBC

Drugs and Alcohol :
1. Have you ever been drunk? If so, describe your first time. Honestly? No. My father drank, Ronan and I never did.
2. Do you like to drink on a regular basis? Funny.
3. What sort of alcohol do you prefer? The non-existent kind.
4. Have you ever tried drugs (mood altering substances)? If so, which kinds and what did you think of them? I don't think this set of questions is quite suited to me - do you?
5. What do you think of drugs and alcohol? Be specific. That wasn't specific enough for you? Ok. I don't judge other people for partaking, unless they indulge a little too much and ignore the impact it has on their lives. I don't touch it.

Likes and Dislikes :
1. What are your hobbies? Having hobbies would imply I have free time (and we've already covered that).
2. Do you like to read? Absolutely!
3. What annoys you more than anything else? Stupid people. Seriously.
4. What do you find the most relaxing activity to do? Does sleep count?
5. What kinds of things embarrass you? Why? Mm.. well I don't like being the sole focus of other people's attentions, particularly if it's unexpected. Hell my own embarrassment embarrasses me. That's what you get for being born with fair skin.

Favorites :
1. What is your favorite color or colors? Azure blue - like a really bright, clear summer sky.
2. What is your favorite time of day? Morning, when it's light enough for the world to be colourful but before the rest of the world gets out of bed to appreciate it.
3. What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? Sunrise from the roof of the Stronghold. The sky was every colour you can think of, all mixed together. Best of all, there was absolutely nothing between me and the sky. It was just endless streaks of beauty, fleeting, like beauty tends to be. Just don't ask me how I got up there.
4. What do you like to eat? What do you hate to eat? My favourite treat has always been roasted hazelnuts with honey, though otherwise I'm not too fussy. I hate eating anything I cook. Things I cook should be incinerated and buried with the dead.
5. What is your favorite type of weather? Does any kind scare you? Thunderstorms. I love summer, long warm days with balmy breezes but there's just something about storms that's entrancing, especially at night. The air becomes thick with it - I sit up for hours watching them when I can. As for the other question, there isn't a weather type that scares me though I'd be a much happier woman without ice in my life.

Outlook :
1. Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Hmm. I think I come across quite pessimistic but that's just cynicism in disguise. I'm an optimist at heart.
2. What are your religious views? Religion and I keep a respectful distance from each other.
3. Would you be able to kill? I honestly don't know. Sometimes I think yes, sometimes the idea of it horrifies me. I hope I never need find out.
4. What are your views on sex? I don't get enough of it. It's the side effect of working too hard, apparently.
5. What, in your opinion, makes a successful life? To be all you can be, whatever that is. Those who spend their lives just dreaming may as well sleep and live in their fantasy. It takes a brave person to draw their dreams into their waking lives and live them. Oh hush. I can be poetic when I want to be.

Actions :
1. What is the worst and best thing you’ve ever done? Hmm. The best thing I've ever done was becoming a doctor but you probably could have guessed that. The worst I think was letting fear get in the way when Versin was killed. The thought of it stings just as much now as it did back then, as much as the words of the man himself could.
2. What is your greatest regret? Not preventing Versin's death.
3. What is your best/worst memory? My best memory I think is Ronan's wedding day. He spent his entire life caring for other people, it was nice to see him taken care of for once. Marianne and I may not always see eye to eye but she staggers Ronan with the love she holds for him. I don't think he would be satisfied with anyone else. My worst memory? Oh take your pick, I'm sure you know the plethora of bad memories my mind stores away in its corners by now.
4. If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be and why? I'm not sure if I would want to. If I somehow prevented my father's death, or Versin's, for example, then I wouldn't be the person that I am today. How do I know that the change I made would be a good one? I'm satisfied with who I am. I learn from my mistakes. I don't waste time lamenting all that I should have done differently.
5. What are you the most proud of doing in your life? I think it would have to be delivering my niece and nephew safely into the world. That may seem strange coming from the future spinster that everyone assumes I'll be but they are both the most precious things in Ronan and Marianne's world and I made sure they survived to see the world.

Emotions :
1. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings with others? It depends I suppose. For the most part I think I'm fairly guarded. Keeping all that locked in does take its toll though. Close friends and family may see the floodgates opened from time to time.
2. Do you have any biases or prejudices? I don't like lazy people. Or stupid people. Seriously. Do you know how hard it is to have a conversation with someone who fails to grasp even the most basic of intellectual concepts? Otherwise I'm fairly open-minded. You have to be, as a doctor. The desire to help someone heal isn't hampered by race or colour or the myriad of other differences we assign to each other. Pain is pain and it's clear in any language.
3. What makes you happy? Sunshine, laughter... flowers. A challenge. My brother, my few friends. Corrupting my niece and nephew. The colour blue. More recently - archery. Who knew?
4. Who or what, if anything, would you die for? Ronan. Honestly, I'm not really sure what else. Ronan would say stubbornness. To be fair to him, I do stick to my principles like there's no tomorrow though I think he's being a little dramatic to say that it'll kill me one day.
5. What makes you angry? Pain caused for pain's sake. Unwarranted imprisonment, in its myriad of forms. A man who keeps his wife living in fear. A woman who keeps his husband living in guilt. Slavery doesn't have to be obvious to be wrong.

Relationships :
1. In general, how do you treat others? As they deserve. If they're honest and honourable then that's how I'll treat them in return. If they're not then my reactions vary from calling them out on it to utterly dismissing them. It's more often the latter. I don't have time to spare in my life to waste on those who don't deserve it.
2. Who is the most important person in your life, and why? Ronan. The reasons for that should be obvious by now.
3. Who is the person you respect the most, and why? Respect? I suppose that person used to be Versin. As strong as my memories are of him I would say it's him still.
4. Do you have a spouse or significant other? If not, describe an ideal lover. No. Men tend to find me either intimidating or just plain strange. I tend to find that they're idiots. Physically I'm not sure if I have a type, other than taller than me (though that's not difficult). Otherwise I want someone who challenges me, someone who will tell me when they disagree with me whilst still supporting what's important to me.
5. Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why? No I don't think that I do. I trust that Ronan would try, just as I would for him but in truth we'd be poor protection for each other from the dangers of this world.

Group Situations :
1. Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict? I suppose it depends what the subject is. I will quite happily avoid conflict where there's no gain in proliferating it. Would I walk away from one man berating another for no reason other than he enjoys it though? No, I wouldn't. Ronan seems convinced that stubborn streak will get me into trouble one day. He's probably right.
2. Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations? If I'm confident enough to. In medical situations, absolutely. There's no room for hesitation or indecision when a patient's health is at stake and panic can elicit all sorts of reactions in people.
3. Do you like interacting with large groups of people? Why or why not? Not especially. The kind of subjects I enjoy talking about don't tend to entertain others for too long. I enjoy solitude or the company of a few close friends.
4. Do you care what others think of you? For the most part, no. If I did then I would have taken drastic measures to cope with it long ago. I care what people think of me as a doctor, I care if a patient loses faith in me. People can call me a spinster with an icy soul for all I care, so long as they acknowledge my particular skills in one way or another.
5. What do you think of others, in general? I think 'others' are far too diverse to be generalised in that way. I like paying attention to the details of other people. Everyone has their little quirks and foibles, things they do or things they have in appearance or personality that in combination are unique to them.

Self Image :
1. What is your greatest strength as a person? My ability to cope under pressure. I've seen any number of horrors in my life, from the obvious to the societal. I've grown adept at tempering my emotions when needed to accomplish what needs to be done, no matter the circumstances.
2. What is your greatest weakness? Stubbornness and an overt curiosity. In combination these facets of my personality can land me in trouble. Nothing ventured, nothing gained?
3. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Nothing. That's not to say I'm completely happy with myself but if I change anything then I wouldn't be me. Ok, I might be a little taller. A little added height couldn't change too much right?
4. Are you generally introverted or extroverted? Introverted certainly. I'm not afraid of speaking out but the dialogue in my own mind is a lot more prolific than it is spoken from my mouth.
5. Are you generally organized or messy? Organised. To a fault.

Beliefs :
1. What God or Goddess do you find most appealing, if any? The Gods and I have a bit of an arrangement. I leave them alone and they don't come wandering into my life triggering strange events.
2. Which God or Goddess do you fear, if any? Same answer.
3. Do you have any Gnosis Marks? If so, how did you receive them? No, I don't.
4. What lengths would you go to to please your deity? I'm fairly sure a deity would find me annoying rather than pleasing.
5. Where do you draw the line at pleasing your deity? What is too much? You see this is exactly why I don't get religious.

Life & Death :
1. What do you absolutely live for? I suppose I sound like a bit of a workaholic by this point but, healing people.
2. What is the best part of life? Family, even if it's just a little one. Especially if it's a little one.
3. What is the best part of death? Strange question. That life is finite? I suppose we wouldn't appreciate as much as we do if we all lived forever.
4. If you could choose, how would you want to die? In my sleep, old and happy.
5. What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death? Helping people.
