The thirty-seventh day of winter, 514 AV

Keene moved over the uneven ground at a steady rate, breath moving through him in a heavier fashion than it had at the beginning of the day when he'd set out for the bazaar. With how many times he'd been in and out of the citadel, Keene had grown a bit more accustomed to the taxing journey to the point where, if he maintained an even pace without pushing himself too hard, he could make it to the citadel in a little under three bells. The docks, however, were still a task. The slope was enough to made things difficult without the added, ridiculous distance. From a tactical standpoint, the obscene journey from the docks to the vestibule was well designed. There were not enough trees to provide cover to anyone approaching, and the expanse of the inclined land and twisting path was more than enough to deter any sort of a attack, should anyone be daft enough to even consider it. Still, it didn't change the burn in his legs or the stick of his sweat to his back as he pushed through the strain, clearing a rise to stare out into the grey expanse.

He could see people milling around both the docks and the ship that carried with it the supplies he'd been sent to fetch as well as those that he wished to purchase on his own. With a controlled inhale and exhale, Keene started down the final leg of the journey, adjusting the straps of his nearly empty backpack as he neared the stony beach, feet displacing the stones to create a muted crackle of stone against stone. The port was, as always, quieter than most everywhere else on the island. Even with those who populated the area spoke in hushed tones if at all, save a few frustrated looking nuit who seemed to be bickering over who was to purchase a sheep that stood placidly between them, oblivious to the fight over its fate - of which Keene assumed ended in something worse than death. The animal was so perfectly content, Keene found the situation fitting for most who arrived on Sahova, himself included: unaware, unassuming, only to be cast into the crucible to emerge either reforged or ash.

Avoiding contact with anyone else, Keene perused through the shops, stopping to purchase food and spices Atziri had requested along with several other things. Ink, rapprochement, and quills were among them, items that he found to be of a more personal nature than he had first thought. Coin exchanged hands quickly and efficiently as he made his rounds, and his backpack grew heavier, his steps slowed some, allowing his eyes to catch on whatever he thought might be useful. Living in the cavern, Keene had found there were things that were inconvenient to be missing - windows aside - and had already taken steps to procure the necessary adjustments. A hatchet was one of them. While his magic could rip through trees easily enough, Keene found that mundane tasks were better left to mundane devices. His reimancy had progressed to the point where he was able to wield a vast amount of power. Using that power for something so simple pushed beyond the line of efficiency into foolishness. When he had started his training, the work had been good for control and mastery. Now, Keene was perfectly happy to learn how to chop down a tree and cut the wood as well. The physical labor would do him good, as well as condition him for the rigors of the island. He wasn't as weak as he had been in Zeltiva, but his strength was still laughable.

A sewing kit was also purchased for practical reasons. Several of his garments were neatly folded in his room, torn in all manner of places. While he had no idea how to sew, the man with the kit had assured him there was a small pamphlet within that would allow him the basics of the craft - something that he requested to see much to the chagrin of the shopkeeper. Repairs were necessary, but elegance was hardly an issue. If he could maintain his clothing to make them last longer, it was well worth the coin. And, magic was something that he could only do for so long before it began to tax him, other hobbies were not something to be shunned. He purchased a sizable strip of cloth to use for patch work in the future, reasoning that if cloth was removed from a shirt, it would have to be added back to be repaired.

With his shopping taken care of, Keene lingered about the ship, resting against the hull and watching the exchanges of Pulsers and nuit a like. It was hardly a picture of the Zeltivan market, but the Scars had only recently departed, leaving Keene with a loneliness that did well to have a little time in the company of others, though not in interaction. He was well aware he would be used to his mostly solitary life soon enough again, but having little else to do other than to start back on the lengthy journey to the cavern, Keene allowed himself the small leisure of people watching until it began to grow late enough that he was prompted back for fear of walking in the dark, burdened by his purchases.

A Trip to a Ship

The eightieth of winter, 514 AV

The Baradobal was much different from the ship that housed the seasonal bazaar. For one, the deck wasn't nearly as cluttered with makeshift shops, rather it was more filled with bodies searching among the collections of books and journals for anything of use or value. Keene hadn't expected things to be quite as oppressive until he'd stared up the gangplank and was met with the milling crowd. It was similar to the Gug Andjak in terms of activity: a bustling but efficient flow of motion. There was a glimpse of a bushy headed woman to his right, which gave him inclination enough to move towards the left to inspect what wares he could find.

Having spent much of his time in the Wright Memorial Library as a child, books were hardly a novel thing, but to find them in a place where he could purchase them for his own, Keene found even the most meager of journals to be seen a new light. Hands and eyes moved over leather and paper, searching as intently as those around him for things of use. There were letters, journals, grimoires, even massive moth-eaten texts in Nader Canoch glyphs that didn't quite follow the common rules of the language as it was presently understood (though the older the book, the more disrepair and lack of legibility). Maps were plenty in supply as well, though Keene's interest was focused more upon intellectual pursuits than perusal of geography.

His search eventually landed a leather bound, battered looking book filled with intricate, detailed drawings of bodies, organs, muscles, and bones. The space that was not given to the diagrams was filled with notations. Many of the words near the edges of the pages had been smudged from time and wear. As he fingered through it, he found several pages to be missing, as well as a several different sections that had been obscured by the rusty color of blood. Still, the content was fascinating. It seemed Keene's interest, even muted, was enough that the man selling the thing wouldn't take less than one hundred golden mizas. Keene wasn't much for bartering, nor did he have much else of a reason to spend money, and parted with the coin with little issue, slipping the book into his backpack for later reading.

Several bells later of searching, Keene had let his eyes wander through autobiographies, travel logs, terrible terrible poetry, a recount of the Valterrian from the perspective of what he imagined to be a five year old, basic techniques for baking, hundreds of letters, and what looked to be a lexicon of some sort detailed two different languages he'd never seen before. When he finally found something of more than simple, novel intrigue, the crowd had shifted and thinned some. Those who had found what they thought of value had left, and those that remained were those unfortunate enough to have either missed the opportunity for a fantastic find or were, like Keene, engrossed in their own subjectively valued investigations. The book in question was bound in a curious conglomeration of wood and stone. The cover was embedded with what seemed to be gems, their facets warping the image behind through the imperfect translucency.

On the first page was a detailed print of a etching. Tall towers, all of which seemed designed by a completely different architect, broke the skyline, sweeping, jutting, and rolling over a barren looking landscape surrounded by a lightly depicted ocean. In a large, sprawling scrawl, the words "Abura Around Afternoonish" followed by an illegible signature. The rest of the book was poetry, but poetry of a flavor akin to the books from Abura, only there was a twist to them. They were heavy with meaning and philosophical investigations, more of an investigation into life than anything else. He found the word play engaging, and the lack of rhyme yet still the feeling of poetry to be wholly present, gave the entire thing a feeling of avant guard that was more than enough to push him towards purchasing it. There were, throughout the book, several more prints of etchings on various pages, each of different subjects like headings for the poems beyond.

There were several writing related supplies he also purchased, chalk being one of them. Glyphing was easy enough on his body, but he wanted to begin practicing in more expansive ways and creating sigils on the ground within the cavern seemed a practical enough place for that, and chalk was a satisfactory medium. Fortunately, most of the shopkeepers were content to allow him his time with their wares, though he stuck to those he had made purchases from. There were several interesting finds still, though none of them were worth the coin. Instead, he let time pass as he read through them, already deciding he would spend the night in the Quarters to allow him extra time to read. The Sahovan library was a awash with complex codes, Nader Canoch, and subject matter of a dense and difficult breed. While Keene enjoyed being mentally challenged, it was another thing all together to sift through the endless mental acrobatics of the Gug Andjak's stores of leather bound knowledge.

His final purchase before he reluctantly left the ship was of a journal in language he didn't recognize. Whether fiction or truth, the pages held many different images and notes about animals both familiar and unfamiliar, most of them scaled, aquatic looking things. It was also one of the more expensive things, but Keene thought it might be useful. Part of his interest in the diagrams of humans and creatures alike was the magic of morphing. He had seen the prairie wardens make use of it, and while he had not been in control of the magic when it had affected him, it had led to one of the most memorable nights of his life. Something so available - but certainly no where near simple - made little sense to avoid attempting to learn. While he wasn't sure about Kinapak, Keene imagined that Daren had the potential to tutor him, or at the very least explain the basics. He knew what it felt like to be transformed, and while he was positive such drastic changes would take time to master, it was something he was set on exploring.

Since coming to Sahova, he had been exposed to more magics than he ever could have dreamed existed. There was so much he didn't know, so little he was currently capable of. Every day he strove to better himself, to gain mastery over the skills he continued to collect, plucking the stars of wisdom from the cloudy skies with as much effort as it might have taken to claim the true things. Every step was taken in a direction towards that end of understanding, of power. The books he had collected - the Aburan poetry aside - were to better understand the path towards that goal. Adjusting the pack on his back, Keene started towards the citadel. The long journey ahead of him stretched upward as the light slowly began to fade.

1 Anatomical Studies Co-authored by Hethe and S'Vanka, the journal contains diagrams and discussions of various parts of the body, proposed effects and functions of various organs, as well as the locations of muscles and bones as detailed in dissections. Only the first three-quarters is legible with stains obscuring about half of the notes. Blood stains mar some of the pages, making them difficult to read. A discussion on theoretical function of muscles, bone structures, and organs is the most notable of the information. Diagrams of the human body in terms of skeletal and muscular structure are accurate. Functions of organs are suppository. 150 GM
1 Lost in the Quiet of the Mind's Rage Against Impotency Under Omniscience Written by the Akvatari author Claegeen, illustrated by the Akvatari artist Mipersinso. Bound in a combination of pseudo-jewels embedded in a wooden binding, courtesy of Mipersinso, the collection of poems takes an existential approach to life through poetry. Major themes revolve around "society", "godlessness", "nature", "hope and despair", and "love". Most of it is written in free verse and blank verse with the occasional sonnet in semi-iambic pentameter. It's in good condition, easily readable. 50 GM
1 Aquatic and Amphibious Creatures Written entirely in Kontinese, the book provides detailed (though not necessarily accurate) depictions of various water-related animals. Some have been diagrammed after dissection while others consist of only subjective interpretations of bone structure and musculature. All notes are in Kontinese which outline the various names of the creatures, their natural habitats, and various blurbs about how they can be utilized (including whether they are dangerous/hostile or not). 100 GM
4 Quill (feathered) 2 SM
1 Wood-bound Book Blank 3 GM
1 Scrollcase (leather) 1 GM
25 sheets Parchment 5 GM
