1st of Winter, 514 AV

Organization is not a difficult skill to understand, though its usage proved to be a grueling task for some. Kaik was one of the some who must undertake such a grueling task, since his teacher simply did not care for organization. His teacher, Maeki Cho, sat in her desk, a cluttered mess of paper piled on it. That day was a rare occasion Kaik decided not to bring any of his animations to the studio, to Maeki’s disappointment.

“Kaik, please come over here,” she begun to write directions on a piece of paper as Kaik arrived in front of the desk, “I need you to escort a new student to the studio, his name is Perrin. He seemed new to the city so I rather he not get lost once again reaching the studio.” She passed the instructions to Kaik.
“Of course,” he said as he peeked at the instructions, “okay...I’ll be back in a bell.”
“Okay, I expect your safe return.”

Kaik wrapped his scarf tighter around him as he made his exit from the studio. He looked down at the instructions constantly as he walked the streets of Lhavit. Eventually Kaik arrived at a normal Lhavitian house and had made his way to the door. He gave the door a few solid hits before waiting. As he waited Kaik became much more aware of how cold it had become since leaving the studio, which made him the all the more eager to quickly return. Still the door did not open.

Now what? I don’t have the slightest idea where he- perhaps I can follow his footsteps!

He looked down on the snow footprints that lead into the main streets.

The other footprints are gonna cover up his! I can only hope I can follow the right one. I can’t see what else I can do.

Kaik followed the footprints as best he could and soon found himself at the entrance of an alleyway. It was then he heard faint shouting coming from deeper within. It was not in Kaik’s nature to leave the issue alone, so he rushed forward listening closely to where the voices were coming from. In no time he had arrived at the scene, two young men beating up another kid as he laid on the ground. The sight resonated with Kaik as he recalled a similar event happening with his friends, he yelled out to the kids, “Hey!” Upon spotting Kaik the two hastily made their escape while Kaik himself swiftly made his way to the injured boy.

“A-are you okay? Um is...there something you need me to do?” Kaik said.
“Fine...I’m fine...thanks,” he said sitting against a wall.

The stranger looked to be still in his teens, he had short brown hair and blue eyes. Kaik offered a hand, but the boy refused the offer as he slowly got up with help from the wall.

The boy looked at Kaik, “Name?”
“Kaik...what’s your’s?”
He waited a chime before saying “Perrin.”

Oh! So he’s the one I needed to find. Why was he in a fight? I probably shouldn’t ask about it...none of my business.

“I-I was sent to find you. Um so...the Animation Studio isn’t far from here...let’s go?” Kaik said.
Perrin simply nodded his head as the two exited the alleyway.

Kaik led the way to the studio while Perrin trailed behind him.
“So, Kaik. You study Animation?” he asked.
“Yeah...um so...how much do you know about it?” Kaik said.
“About Animation? Just the basics. What exactly do you do for work at that place?”
“Oh, let’s see...um...organization, errands, and on rare occasions I help out with teaching.”
“Is that so? You don’t seem like the type to teach.”
“Y-yeah...I guess I’m not...but work is work,” Kaik said with a sigh.
“Aren’t you treated like royalty though?” Perrin said.
“Huh? Royalty? What are you talking about?” he asked confused.
“Isn’t your boss a well renowned mage in the city? Which would make you assistant to said well renowned mage.”
Kaik couldn’t help but laugh, “Maeki is certainly not the most famous wizard in Lhavit. She just lives a simple life in an even simpler house. Nobody really knows that an Animation Studio actually exists.”
“Wow, really? That’s surprising.”
“Well...I’m...sure you’ll find more surprises in this city of magic.”

After the conversation was finished it took only twenty chimes to return to the Animation Studio. Upon entering the studio Maeki stood up from her chair to greet the guest, “Ah! So you’ve returned. Welcome to the studio! Now we mustn't delay. Shall I begin the lesson?” she said enthusiastically.
“You will be teaching me?” Perrin asked.
“Yes! Is there something wrong?” Maeki said with concern.
“No. I’d actually prefer Kaik to teach me,” he said.
“M-me? No no no I’m still a novice when it comes to teaching and and-” Kaik said surprised.
Maeki simply grinned, “Oh? Is that so. Okay, Kaik, would you please teach him?”

You say ‘please’ but all I’m hearing is ‘you must’.

“Okay,” Kaik said defeated.
“Good. I’ll leave the studio your hands then. I have some things I need to take care of,” Maeki said already heading toward the front doors, “oh, and Kaik? I already have some things you may use for teaching, though they’re scattered about. Good luck!” The door shuts leaving the two to their own devices.

Where to begin? Perrin said he knew the basics, but I’m not really sure how you expand on the basics. It took me years to get to that point, though that was through reading those absolutely useless texts about Animation.

“May we start?” Perrin said politely.
“Y-yes! I’m just...sorting my thoughts...I was not expecting to do this,” Kaik said.
“Sorry,” Perrin said genuinely guilty.
“Oh! N-no no nothing for you to be sorry about. I’m uh...happy you wanted me as your...teacher? I suppose that’s what I sorta am,” Kaik said as he scoured the room for the ‘teaching supplies’ Maeki was talking about, “what...exactly do you understand about Animation?”
“Soulcore, persona, directives, animation circles, and astral body.”
“Okay, so have you actually created anything yet?”
“No.”
“Okay, right! I think-...well if you know the basics it should be fine to try,” Kaik picked up a seemingly unanimated stuffed bear, “I think this will do...hopefully.”

Now that a shell was found all Kaik needed now was an animation circle, but to make that he would need chalk, which seemed like a daunting task given the amount of clutter filling the room.

I really wish Maeki would just hire a maid or someone to clean this place up. How she manages to find what she needs astounds me.

With Kaik searching for the needed supplies Perrin sat on a nearby wooded chair and surveyed the room.

“Hey...Kaik?” Perrin said with a question in mind.
“Er...yeah?” Kaik said as he was searching through a pile of books.
“Why Animation?”
Confused Kaik turned to faced to Perrin, “I...don’t understand. What do you mean?”
“Why did you choose Animation as your main magic, why not shoot fireballs? Or summon monsters?”
After a few moments Kaik came to an answer, “To create life from where there was none, fascinating isn’t it? In truth I-...wanted to bring the dead back to life...but eventually I gave up on such vile ideas...for what we lose can never truly be brought back to us,” staring at the floor for another few chimes Kaik finally said, “well...I think found it...the chalk.”

Finding an empty spot on the floor to work on Kaik motioned Perrin to follow him. Giving Perrin the piece of chalk, Kaik began his instructions.

“So...do you know how to draw a basic animation glyph?” Kaik said.
“Two triangles connected by a line?” Perrin said unsure.
“Um...close. Two circles connected by a line, one circle should be slightly larger than the other.”
Perrin drews a simple layout slowly, “Like this?”
“Yes. Okay...er...just show me what you know...and that will be where we start,” Kaik hands him the bear, “er...you know the safety procedures right?”
“I think. Don’t move out the circle. Don’t touch the chalk.”
“Yeah, though feel free to um...move? When you’re done with a sitting.”
“Sitting? How much is a sitting?”
“It’s like...just finish a task you had in mind...don’t just stop while you’re doing a task.”

Perrin nodded and stepped into the circle. He began to focus his mind on the Animation, but of course nothing happened.

“Did I do something wrong?” Perrin said perplexed.
“Just give the circle a drop of your blood,” Kaik said honestly.
“Huh? Blood? Oh...alright.”
“Oh! And something else I should mention. You understand what happens when you use yourself as the source right?”
“No, what happens?”
“Well...usually you tend to feel a sort...attachment toward the golem.”
“I didn’t know that. Hm...still I want to use myself as the source.”

Kaik unsheathed his dagger and placed into his student’s hand. Perrin winced as he let a drop of blood hit the circles. After returning the dagger he began to once again focus and this time the circle glowed red.

Am I doing this right? I think I am. This is the right way to teach, I think. It’s glowing. That’s good...then again that could be a bad thing.

“Okay, so...do you know what’s next?” Kaik asked.
“Create the soulcore?”
“Yeah. Just focus on the...identity you want. It’s like-...don’t worry about the specifics. When you’re done you’ll...feel it be done.”

Sitting at a spare chair Kaik waited patiently for Perrin to finish the first step. After a short moment Perrin breathed a sigh of relief signaling he had finished the first part of the Animation.

“Done,” Perrin said with satisfaction.
“That’s good...ok, next would be?” Kaik asked to be sure Perrin knew what to do.
“Persona, which also means the directives.”
“Yup. Just keep all of it simple and short. Actually just use one directive.”
“Understood.”

I never realized how long the Animation process was. Maybe it was because I was too preoccupied with the actual animation? Oh well. At least things are going fine for now. Maybe I should’ve let one of the dolls come with me? May have been a good example for Perrin.

“This is hard. I don’t really know what I’m doing,” Perrin said with his eyes closed.
“Um...okay...how to explain...er. What exactly are you trying to do now?”
“I’m trying to create its personality.”
“Hm...okay...you that may not be possible at your level. Emotions are complex, it’s not exactly easy to teach a person how to be happy or sad. Let’s just work on a directive.”
“Okay...and how do I do that?”
“I think we can work on the killphrase. Focus your mind on the djed inside yourself and in the object. Direct the information from yourself toward the other circle. Do you understand?”
“Yeah, I think I’ve got it.”

Ten chimes go by till Perrin finished the second phase of the project.

“Right. I think I’m done,” Perrin said with a smile.
“Next step. Let’s see...hm...I think...okay I want you to teach it to jump when it sees a person clapping. Don’t actually teach it to jump through, just teach it what it should do. Teaching it to jump will be included in shaping the astral body.”
“Sure. Sounds simple enough.”

In order to pass the time Kaik decided to organize the book scattered throughout the room. He planned to pile them up alphabetically. By the time Perrin was finished Kaik had organized at least a fourth of the books.

“Final step, almost finished. Okay so, Perrin all you have to do now is the astral body. You don’t actually have to teach it to move, simply teach it to stand and jump.”
“I’m not completely sure I can do that.”
“Don’t worry, it’ll be fine I’m sure. It may help if you jump, sit, and stand back up while you do it.”
“If you say so.”

Once again Kaik continued his mission to completely organize every single book in the room. When Perrin had finished his work Kaik had organized about half of the room’s books. The glow of the circles faded while Perrin lied down on the floor. Kaik quickly went to his side to ask if he was alright.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Not really tired but...I don’t know...I just feel so...satisfied.”

Leaving Perrin to his rest the teacher walked over to the other circle to retrieve the stuffed bear. As Perrin rose from the floor his teacher handed him the bear who then sat on the palms of its creator. Making sure it could see his hand Kaik clapped and in response the bear jumped up. A wide smile grew on Perrin’s face before he began to laugh. Kaik soon joined after him happy for his student’s success.

“Congrats Perrin. Your first animation. I’m uh...happy it turned out so well.”
“Thanks....Kaik. I’m really grateful for your help,” he looked toward the window, “it’s almost sunset, I need to get home. Really...thank you Kaik.”
“Your welcome,” Kaik led him to the door, “I’m sure one day you’ll become an amazing animator.”
“Heh...maybe one day.”

The door closed leaving Kaik alone in the animation studio.

“Back to the books I guess,” he said with a sigh.

KAIK LEYR

XP:

  • Observation +2
  • Socialization +3
  • Tracking +1
  • Teaching +2
  • Organization +1

Lore:
  • Tracking : Following footprints
  • Perrin: Kaik's new student of Animation
  • Teaching Perrin to animate a stuffed bear
  • Teaching: explaining the steps of the animation process

Notes:
A bit short, but rather enjoyable... Though I suppose I'd like to see some more in-depth explaining when you have Kaik teach things. I mean, it's not that realistic to just give your student some vague directives and he succeeds. Well, unless he's some kind of genius...
