Sparring with a Friend (Alexander)

4th of Spring, 515 AV

The sun began to rise on a crisp and chilly spring morning. As it rose, streaks of orange and red could be seen filtering out through the clouds as the ever-growing rays of sunlight touched upon the surrounding landscape, like overstretched arms enveloping the surrounding area. Claudia woke up early today. She had something interesting in mind to do today. She had an arranged sparring with her friend and fellow squire, Alexander Ross in the Antinous Training Grounds. They would be duelling with longswords, trying to increase their competency in the art of the weapon, while being clad in heavy plate armour. She had also planned on bringing along her shield for some practice. Gods know, she sure needed the practice.

The grounds were located on the eastern part of the first tier of the city. Claudia heard from the many fabled-stories that long ago, like a hundred and fifty years long ago, the area that she was standing in right now, the Training Grounds, was just the roof of the Dryes district. That was all it was. It was only thanks to Weapons Master Lucius Antinous's ingenious idea of refitting the roof to serve the Order's training purposes, that the entire Syliran order had a place to train in today. After a full year of planning and construction, it was finally ready to be used. She had always been fascinated by the story of the conversion of such a place, and how space could be achieved from thinking out-of-the-box. What a genius the man was. She was not in the least surprised that the man was as respected as he was, when he had feats as amazing as this.

Claudia walked into the grounds, with her longsword jiggling in its sheath at her hips. On her right arm, she carried with her with her large steel shield. Taking a deep breath, she breathed in the refreshing morning air. Feeling reinvigorated by the refreshing chilly air, she exhaled, letting out a satisfying sigh. Upon arriving on their meeting location, she discovered that she must have been early, for there was no one there in the grounds but her. Most of the other squires must either still be sleeping, or carrying out other errands.

Taking this as an opportunity to explore the grounds, she walked around the area, observing the many various parts of the Training Grounds. She saw a variety of terrain that was constructed to provide help to the squires and knights in their exercises to aid their training. There were mock-hallways used to practice their skill of close quarters combat, with huge boulders and debris placed among other wreckage one must traverse, as somewhat of an obstacle course.

Moving on to another area, she saw a small grove of trees that was specially cultivated to form a wooded environment for the knights and squires to train in. Fighting in wooded territory, was a common situation, they would find themselves in, and so they would need to get themselves familiar with the terrain and territory. Turning around to survey what she could see of the area, she noticed that a vast majority of the grounds was in open air, leaving any of those who trained exposed to the elements. Wind, rain, snow, sun, you name it, they would be exposed to it. There weren't even many trees around except for the small grove, she passed on earlier. She swivelled around, walking back to their intended meeting location. It was nearing their appointment time, and her friend and fellow squire, Alexander should be there soon enough. She took quick strides across the field, making good time, hoping to reach before Alex would arrive. It would be embarrassing to arrive first, only to be late in the end.

Sparring with a Friend

Alexander Ross

The chilly early Spring air nipped at whatever exposed skin Alex had, giving him goose bumps. Streams of bright orange sunlight beamed through the clouds and spotted Syliras's all ready busy streets with streaks of light. It was a beautiful day, despite the cold air, which should only last a few more hours before the afternoon sun heated the day up just a bit.

It seemed as if every beam of sunlight was intent on shining in his eyes, causing him to squint. It had been another sleepless night, and every muscle in his body was stiff. He had never been much of a morning person, but he and his good friend Claudia had made plans to practice their skills at using a longsword. Early-riser or not, Alex decided that he needed to try and better himself at his weapon skills.

He yawned widely as he entered the Antinous Training Grounds, and began searching for Claudia, his longsword sheathed at his side. He spotted her walking quickly across the training grounds and waved at her, his armor making a mild clinking sound.

"Good morning, Claudia! How are you this morning?" He called out, trying to sound more cheerful than he really felt. He squinted and pulled off his glasses to wipe them off before putting them back on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose. Having another sleepless night was really taking it's toll on him, he thought. He only hoped that he would be able to function well enough to get on with today's practice, and that he would soon get used to the heaviness of the shield on his left arm...

Sparring with a Friend

Postby Claudia Blackwood on March 9th, 2015, 10:35 am

Claudia turned around as soon as she heard the sound of a loud and sleepy yawn. Her deep green eyes landed upon the familiar sight of her friend, Alexander, whom had just entered the training grounds right on time, without a chime to spare. His lazy gait was accompanied by the jingling of his longsword at his hip, and the clinking of his heavy plate armour. He quickly found her after a quick scan of his surroundings, after which he gave her a quick greeting as he walked towards her.

"Good morning, Claudia! How are you this morning?"

She then promptly reciprocated his greeting with one of her own. "I'm feeling great and looking forward to this spar! How about you Alex? You look kinda under the weather, not feeling too well, are you? Or are you just not a morning person?" She chuckled softly as she shot a glance up at the young man's face. She knew that some people were just not the type who resonated with waking up early in the morning. They were usually grumpy, and easily irritating if one were to wake them up outside of their comfort zone. They usually preferred the later parts of the day, afternoons, most likely or nights. The nights were what you called night owls.

Claudia then watched as Alex took off his glasses to give them a quick wipe before placing them back up high on the bridge of his nose. She herself was equipped with her own suit of heavy armour that she had loaned from the Order stores. And it was petching heavy, that was for sure. She was certainly not looking forward to fighting in it. It was nothing fancy, just a heavy suit comprising of a steel breastplate and its accompanying steel plate greaves. She was still getting used to being in heavy armour, let alone fighting in it. She didn't feel very comfortable in them yet. At this rate, she didn't think she ever will. Claudia wondered if Alex had felt the same regarding being in armour, when he had worn it for the first time. She had no clue about how he felt as he had been a squire a lot longer than she ever had.

She then walked towards him, turning to face him. Tossing him an excited smile, she said
"Are we ready to start then, Alex?" Claudia proceeded to unsheath her longsword, the blade giving out a quick screech as it was released from its prison. She held the blade skywards close to her face, before waving the sword around with her sword hand, getting a feel for the blade with armour on. This was the first time she was actually sparring anyone with any form of heavy armour on, and she had never had a chance to own any piece or suit of armour before, let alone metal steel ones. She gripped her steel heater shield firmly in her right arm, loosening her muscles as she got ready for the spar. Tense muscles inhabits freedom of movement, you don't want that when you are fighting.

Claudia hoped to achieve a better understanding of fighting in heavy armour by the end of the spar. Being able to fight under the burden of armour was a necessity for almost every warrior, and most definitely a Syliran knight. She had aspired to be a knight someday, but for now, all she could do was to increase and improve her skills enough so that she could achieve that in the future. She still had a long way to go, but everyone had to start from somewhere.

"I'm feeling great and looking forward to this spar! How about you Alex? You look kinda under the weather, not feeling too well? Or are you just not a morning person?"

At this, Alex grinned and chuckled a bit. "To be quite honest..." He replied, using his right hand to gently massage his left shoulder. "I would have to say both. Then again, there aren't too many days when I feel any different. So I guess it's the latter, more or less..." He hated mornings, and he always has. Mainly it's the thought of being unable to return to his warm bed in the squire dormitories after a seemingly endless night of tossing and turning while wide awake. For a long time, he has had trouble with insomnia, due to how much stress he is submerged under every day.

He could guess that Claudia must not be very comfortable wearing metal armor just yet. He couldn't blame her, to be quite frank. He remembered the time he had tried on his stepfather's armor, and how he had nearly fallen over more than once because his body wasn't used to the weight. And his thin and wiry build certainly didn't help the matter.

He watched as Claudia pulled her handsome looking blade from its sheath at her side, before gently waving it a few times. Alex could only guess that she was doing this to get a better feel of her fighting hand with armor on, which confirmed his suspicions. He gently pulled his own longsword from its sheath at his side, the blade making a high-frequency ringing that made him blink in surprise. The sound was not at all painful or uncomfortable, but surprising. Alex was never fond of high-pitched noises.

When she asked him if he was ready, he rolled his shoulders in an attempt to loosen the stiff muscles. Once he felt he was ready, he bent his knees and took his stance. It was far from perfect, but it definitely showed that he had some experience. "Ready when you are. You wanna make the first move?"

Sparring with a Friend (Alexander)

Claudia chuckled at the sight of Alex somewhat stumbling with his words. He seemed to have quite a difficult figuring out which was which. First he went on about the reasons being both, but he then quickly switched to saying it was more like the other. Looks like he's not a morning person then. Claudia didn't feel too bad at mornings, IF she have had sufficient sleep the night before. She didn't fancy sleeping too much, too much time wasted she reckoned. She is usually up and about, doing something that doesn't consist of lying down in bed.

Fighting with heavy plate armour on, coupled with a suit of chain mail underneath was proving to be a real challenge. Even moving around took extra effort and strength for her. Claudia knew that she still had a long way to go, but she really hoped that she would eventually get used to fighting under such a weight. Maybe in the future, when she had saved enough to finally afford a custom-fitted armour of her own, it wouldn't be so bad as this general petching piece of armour. With her blade in hand, she slowly but surely got accustomed to the swings, after several chimes of warm up strokes. She heard Alex drawing his sword, and his gave a similar loud screech in response, the metal scratching against its sheath as it was removed from its prison. She saw him recoiling slightly in surprise, and that prompted her to break out into a smile. Alex still seemed so green, despite having been a squire longer she had. With his blade now in hand, he then mentioned,

"Ready when you are. You wanna make the first move?"

She readily answered "No problem! Here we go!"

Claudia proceeded to move into her offensive stance, placing her feet slightly apart from each other, with her left foot slightly further forward than her right. Her long sword was held firmly in her hands, and when she felt she was ready, she surged forward with a heavy-handed slash towards him. The stroke was aiming towards his head, and was one of the most commonly used attack moves. Alex quickly deflected her opening move, before sending a mid-level slash towards her. She quickly raised her shield in response to the attack, blocking his strike with a 'THUD' on her shield.

Not giving him any moment to recover, she counter-attacked immediately with a strike of her own, this time sending the blade aiming down towards the young man's lower region, hoping to catch him off-guard. With her steel shield raised and positioned firmly in her other hand to block off any potential counter attack he might bring, she carefully planned her next move, and at the same time preparing for the any move he might throw at her following her starting attack.

Once Claudia took her offensive stance, Alex clenched his sweating hands tighter around his weapon, waiting for her first move. Surprisingly enough, the rush of adrenaline he felt while he was waiting quickly ended his early morning melancholy, allowing him to focus more on the spar. His muscles tensed when Claudia sent a slash at his head. Using his reflexes, he quickly parried the blow, searching for an opening to deliver a counter attack.

He flinched a bit when the hilt of his sword vibrated in his hand, nearly causing him to loosen his grip on it. Fortunately, he found himself able to keep his hold on it long enough to deliver a counter attack at Claudia's midsection, which was swiftly deflected by her shield, the collision once again sending another jolt up his arm. This was a usual thing for him. The first few blows in a spar were always more uncomfortable, but he would soon be unable to feel the collision of each strike.

He immediately began to plan his counter attack, searching for an opening that would prove to be a useful target. Before he could make up his mind, Claudia took a more defensive stance and send an attack near his leg. He had not anticipated this, and as a result he was slow to react, knocking the blade away as soon as it contacted his leg. Even though he didn't care for the armor, he was thankful to be wearing it, else it would have left a fairly nasty cut on his thigh.

The way Claudia held her defensive stance, there was not much he could do to counter without it being deflected by either her sword or shield. Deciding to take a risk, he ducked and rolled past her, sending a slash to the back of her knees. This, of course, was poorly aimed due to his head spinning after his recent maneuver, and he planned to be more successful in the future. Right now, he was just thankful that the blade even made contact.

"Come on, Claudia. You're gonna have to do better than that!" He taunted shooting her a teasing grin.

Claudia had her shield raised and positioned in her other hand to block any potential counter attack. And that attack was about to arrive. She saw Alex ducking and rolling past her, sending a slash to the back of her knees. Fortunately, despite making contact, his strike was poorly executed after his spinning maneuver. She shrugged the attack off as he taunted her with a teasing grin. "Come on, Claudia. You're gonna have to do better than that!" She quickly recovered and send a quick thrust his way, aiming towards his lower half. He managed to get his sword up in time, parrying the low-ward thrust. She wasn't about to let-up yet, sending a quick riposte his way, this time aiming for his chest. The blade made contact, but did nothing, as his chest was well-protected by his breastplate.Alex let loose another strike, but she parried it well enough, pushing his blade away with hers. The sword vibrated each time it struck one another and it send a jolt down her arm with each strike.

She was beginning to tire, and it was starting to affect her moves. Despite having her hair up in a messy braided bun, sweat continued to flow like a river, down her neck onto her back. The stuffiness of the armour trapped the heat in them, causing her to perspire even more. She brushed away some from forehead with the back of her hand, as some of it had began drip down her face. She then went back to focusing on Alex. Gripping the handle of her blade firmly in her hands, she readied her shield arm for the next potential attack he might bring. She wondered if Alex was tiring as well, but she could not tell from the way he moved. He either hid his emotions well, or he wasn't tired at all.

After a bell more of sparring, Claudia could go on no more. She was spent. She told Alex
"Let's stop here. I can go no further." before collapsing onto the ground in a heap. She struggled to unbuckle the many straps securing her breastplate, removing the heavy burden from herself, exposing her sweat-drenched shirt. Without the heavy metal armour to obstruct the air flow, her perspiration began to cool rapidly, bringing on a cooling sensation. Claudia sighed in relief as she began to rest her exhausted self. All she could think of was a nice, refreshing time in the baths at Soothing Waters after they were done with this.

Alex was disappointed that his previous maneuver did very little to slow Claudia down, but at the same time he expected it. Considering how poorly executed his roll was and how it left him feeling a bit dazed, then it was no surprise that the strike to the back of her knees barely did anything. He made a mental note to be more cautious of moves like that, especially if he should ever be in a situation where he would be battling a foe, rather than a good friend.

Seeing how quickly she recovered, Alex quickly tensed up and prepared for what counter attack she had in mind. Once again, she sent a thrust toward his lower half. This nearly caught him off guard, as he was expecting another slash at his mid-section. The only thing that kept the blow from making contact was his reflexes acting quickly to parry it with his sword. Unfortunately, his reflexes acted poorly on her next move, when she sent another thrust toward his chest. His armor protected him well, but the blow still sent rough vibrations through his entire torso, nearly causing him to lose his breath. Okay, then... Wasn't expecting that...

They continued sparring for another bell. Alex's heart raced within his chest, and his lungs ached with each gasp for breath. Underneath his armor, his clothes were perspiring with sweat, along with his forehead. His legs were beginning to ach from his attempts at being light on his feet, and it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to hold his weapon. Of course, he refused to show it, keeping himself focused on the spar. Stealing a glance at Claudia's face, he noticed that she seemed much more exhausted than he was. Taking this opportunity, he quickly jerked forward and sent a thrust to her stomach, right above her abdomen. To his satisfaction, the blow made contact, only to be knocked away by Claudia's own blade. The blow was not all that harsh, but it was much better than his weak attack to her legs.

Time dragged on for a few more minutes, and Alex found himself unable to land another blow. He was about to call the spar off when Claudia beat him to it, collapsing on the ground and giving in to her exertion.

"Let's stop here. I can go no further." She said, unbuckling the straps that held her breastplate in place. Letting out a weak chuckle, he put his sword away and kneeled next to her.

"You okay there?" He asked, breathing heavily. He stood up and reached out a gloved hand, offering to help her up. "I guess we can call this one a draw, if you'd like. I'm just glad I was fighting a friend, instead of some bloodthirsty predator."
"I've never failed anyone, because there isn't anyone in my life who I can make proud."

  • Weapon Skills: Longsword: 2XP
  • Endurance: 1XP
  • Acrobatics: 1XP
  • Observation: 1XP
Lores:
  • Claudia: Fellow squire, sparring partner.
  • Combat: Difficulty of fighting in heavy armor.

Shield Points: +2 for Training.

Comments for both: There's some nice sparring here, though the thread felt a little short-lived. If you struggle to make combat writing last too long then think about all the things you can describe - the way your character is moving their body, the way it feels, how they're angling their blade, what is running through their mind as they do so, etc. Combat can also be as much about tactics and planning as about enacting practised moves. If your opponent moves one way, you counter by moving another way.

This will also have the added bonus of building up more skills in your threads - Acrobatics for Alex's roll for example, Tactics for planning out your next move, Observation for noticing how your opponent is moving, Intimidation if you do something frightening to put your opponent off, Unarmed Combat if you swing a free elbow in your opponent's face (the possibilities are endless!).

Claudia - I also noticed you wrote a little about Alex's responses to your attacks before Alex himself had written about them. I understand that it's easy for combat to become a little stilted without knowing how your opponent is going to react but you should still try and avoid enacting the reactions of other PCs in your posts (after all - they may surprise you and react in a completely different way!).

Hope the feedback helps - I look forward to reading more training threads from the both of you!

Let me know if you have any questions and don't forget to edit your post in the Grade Request Thread.

Happy Writing!
