Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Sweet Day!

60th of Spring, 515AV

The day did not start early, but the excitement did. Visitors and Rivarians alike had been speaking of the cheerful Sweets festival for nearly a moon now, excited, even as adults. For them, it was less of a day for Sweets, and more for community, except, of course, to the children. To the young ones, it was all about sweets. About finding the best and the tastiest treats to spend their tickets on. It also came with a certain amount of self control, while going to bed the night before had been tough with the energy that radiated from the youth of the city, the morning could not come any sooner. Parents would take their young to the ticket booth, and then the waiting game began as the children tried their best to remain patient until noon when all the waiting paid off.

Most of Riverfall was now collecting in and around the Zhongjie Warrens. Nothing but candy was sold that day, but it was only expected so no one was at a terribly inconvenience. Restaurants and tea shops that were located near the Bazaar would also reap the rewards of such a busy festival. Colorful clothe hung around poles and a few corners hosted musicians which only added to the excitement.

By the Gods' grace, the Spring rain showers held for the day with only a few scattered clouds to break the sun. As the twelf bell of the day sounded through various parts of the city it was easy to see that the Festval was already in full throttle. Throngs of people covered the streets without horses or carriages to distrust them. The joyous laughter of children was not far from one's ears as the younger ones chased through the streets trying to find the best candy to boast for their friends. Neighbors and old friends reunited and conversed with their own bought goods. Although the city put no decorations up for the event, the streets of Riverfall seemed brighter and more cheery than normal.

Sezkero, having chosen an apartment relatively close to the Zhongjie Warrens, found that she could enjoy much of the music from her home. For the solitary snake, she could have been content with a book and the Rivarian fanfare from a particularly patriotic busker outside of her window, but today she had a different idea in mind. She had never seen the Sweets Festval before but over the last few days the Iyvess had gotten a rather good idea of what it was about. She both dreaded and looked forward to the social event, but first she had something to take care of. Dressed in her favorite dress and sandals, Sezkero had taken to the streets earlier that morning in search of two particular children.

The homeless urchins, Meya and Codin had found a special place in Sezkero's heart over the past season, and Ker would hate for them to miss such an exciting event. But when the tiny Iyvess had reached the usual meeting spot, Meya and Codin were not there. Neither were any of the other children she had grown to know the last season. Stumped, Ker had waited half a bell before telling back towards the festival, curious if the children were still unused to her with Hirem's presence close by.

But it wasn't until half-a-bell before the festival started that Sezkero had found one of the urchins. Tiny bare feet, calloused and scarred from exposure at such a young age, running towards her down the streets.

"Kero!" The golden brown eyes of the older brother, Codin, greeted her.

"Codin! Where isss your sssissster?" Sezkero questioned finding no companion with the boy. The eleven tear old held up his tokens, only enough for one child.

"I went to go get us tickets, but she is too young for me to get her tickets, so I was going to find you." The boy explained in quick words, hardly stopping for a breathe. The snake could not help but smile at how the child could barely contain his excitement for the following day. He was already tugging at her hand, and the woman chuckled, following the boy at a slower pace, weaving through the crowd until they finally reached the ticket booth. Standing in the shade of the booth, was Meya. Her hair was all over the place, charcoal curls sticking every which way, but it was obvious the urchin had cleaned up. Although her clothes were old and worn, the girl and her brother looked almost as if they had what other children had. Sezkero had passed the point where she could only feel bad for the children's situation, since she knew that there was an answer. However, the smile that split Meya's chocolate lips would melt even the coldest of hearts.

Without saying anything, a trait that was nearly expected from the girl at this point, she fell into line with Kero as Codin dragged the grown woman to the booth.

"Here, tell the man that Meya needs her ticket." The boy directed her, pointing to the Akalak in the booth. Before complying, the snake took a minute to read the rule's that had been posted in front of the booth. Three tickets for ages 5-6. Sezkero stepped forward to speak to the Akalak in charge of the tickets. He was evaluating how familiar Meya and Codin were with Sezkero before she began speaking.

"Hello, exxxcussse me." Sezkero caught his attention in Tukant, switching over to common once the man replied by asking her how many tickets she needed. "I'm going to need three, for my nieccce," The lie rolled off of Sezkero's lips with startling ease, but the Iyvess continued, flashing her friendliest smile. "Sshhe just turned sssixxx, you ssseem to have given her brother ticketsss, but not her?" Sezkero mustered up the confidence to put a dash of authority in her voice. She felt a hand on her hip and the cloth of her dress was pulled tight by Meya's small fingers. The girl stood nearly at Sezkero's height but was on her toes to see over the counter of the booth. The Iyvess was shocked at the hand, which was only gripping her dress for balance, but dared not challenge how comfortable to girl had become with her.

"It's no problem Ma'am, she was just a little young to receive her own tickets, we thought to see a relative first." The Akalak's calm voice echoed in the enclosed stall as he counted out three tickets.

"Her brother wasss right there." Sezkero huffed under her breathe, feeling like a child herself, before grabbing the tokens and handing them to Meya. The brief proximity was quickly ended when the silent girl obtained what she wanted. A mischievous look was given to her brother and in less than a tick the children ran off into the crowd, ready to spend their tickets quicker than they had received them, if they could. Suddenly without a purpose, Sezkero found herself leisurely walking in the direction the kids had ran off to, curious about the sweets herself. Worry for the kids was not so prominent today, as they were not the only kids darting through the streets today. Nor would the siblings have been easy to find if she tried, something the snake found from experience. But Sezkero decided to stay around, both curious about the festival and ready if the siblings needed her.

Sweet Day!

Postby Rosela on March 10th, 2015, 3:21 pm

If Rosela saw another carrot, she would surely die. Lettuce, the same. Cabbage too, it’s loathsome brother. Every vegetable could go hang itself. After several days of picking at salads and vegetable snacks, her reward was finally at hand, and was one of the only things that would keep her away from her shop for at least part of the workday.

Sweetday.

She’d desperately tried to stave off too much weight gain as she neared the apex of her pregnancy, but despite her efforts, her hips seemed to have grown like a pair of snowballs running downhill. Her latest salad diet had worked somewhat, but the ultimate goal of that was not to lose weight, only to make her feel better about going out on Sweetday. If someone there didn’t have sugared kiwis, she was going to simply die.

That the holiday was all about children seemed ironic, given she couldn’t care two licks for the child growing inside of her, but she still went to bed as excited for the morning as any of the children darting up and down the street. She hoped Tim was young enough to get tickets for his sweets, and that Hirem would be up to the job of making sure the boy didn’t glut himself too much. Whether she'd manage to run into them in so much crowd seemed unlikely, but she resolved to keep her eyes out.

One hand on the massive stomach pushing out the front of her dress, Rosela eased herself into a bench near the ticket booth, next to another pregnant woman shouting to an Akalak escorting two small boys through the line. Rosela’s ankles, thankfully hidden under the long dress, were swollen and sore already. The woman next to her, Rosela discreetly observed, was in bad need of some more stylish maternity wear, and she made a mental note to inform the woman of the fact as soon as she stopped shouting. The children in line, presumably hers, a shocking idea given she was human, looked familiar and Rosela quickly realized it was because they were each wearing one of her styles. She felt a swell of pleasure, immediately doused by the feel of a foreign hand on her stomach.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” The woman next to her, surprised by Rosela’s flinch, jerked her hand back with a smile. “You must be about ready, right? How far along are you?”

Attempting to quell the irritation of her person being assaulted, Rosela smiled through it. ”Beginning of next season. Almost there!” The excitement was entirely fake, but she’d gotten used to lying about it by now. ”And you?”

The woman put two hands over her stomach with pride and Rosela saw with shock that neither was clasped in an undan. This woman got herself pregnant for free? “Mid fall, they say! My two boys – oh, here they are!”

Indeed, the two Akalak boys were bouncing excitedly towards them, tickets clutched in their hands. The man behind them looked at Rosela in confusion, thrusting hands in pockets that she knew she’d stitched herself. “Say, aren’t you…The store! That clothing store, honey, the one you pointed out?” His heavily accented voice rose in surprise as he touched his wife’s shoulder. “Don’t you own that Red Diamond place?”

Before Rosela could answer, the woman broke excitedly in. “I knew you looked familiar! Listen, I’ve been meaning to come in for some – Balkas! Morkas! Get back here!” Shouting at her children who were trying to sneak away down the hill, Rosela tried not to flinch away from the sound. “I’m so sorry, these kids, ugh!”

”It’s fine, they’re just excited. You come in any time and we’ll take good care of you.” Taking one of the woman’s hands in two of hers, she patted it gently.

“I’ll do just that! You have a good Sweetday, hm? Honey, help me up here – Morkas! I swear to Wysar, I’ll tear up those tickets right up if you don’t…”

As she waddled away on the arm of her Akalak, Rosela let her voice meld into the general din of the crowd. She’d need to get off that bench herself if she wanted to get her sweets, and from the looks of the vendors setting up further down, the sales were nearly due to start. Four hands braced on the back of the bench, she heaved herself up, taking a moment to brush off her dress. First sweets, then home, hopefully before her ankles gave out.

Sweet Day!

Postby Yra on March 27th, 2015, 5:22 am

price18.4 gm for dress

Yra stood upon an old wooden box in a light spring dress embroidered with flowers and buttoned up the bodice, balanced precariously as she guided a bow across the strings of her instrument in a location that would surely draw attention to her due to the quality of her music and the novelty of her form. She had learned to capitalise on it, on the marble texture of her skin and the way her horns seemed to bring marvel to the eyes of the little children so enamoured with their sugary delights.

To be honest, Yra sometimes envied these children. She couldn't imagine what it might be like to actually want the sweets and couldn't actually build up the desire to just eat them herself unless she wanted them. At night, sweet things were rare and Yra chose instead to sleep.

The envy was shortlived when it came upon her between the songs she played. Her fingers ached a bit and she stretched them briefly, flexing her hand to relieve them. A child darted by, giggling, and Yra smirked at the expression of joy. The smile was rueful but genuine.

It was with a great huff that Yra then returned her violin to the nook so well-made for it against the buffer of her shoulder.

When she started playing again, it was a quick and lively thing that resulted in more shrill squeaks and shrieks than perhaps necessary, but that actually found themselves as suited to the current setting. It certainly didn't stop her from playing as she took turns between scouring the crowd for familiar faces and watching her fingers to ensure she didn't snap a string or drop her instrument.

Oh, she'd be simply mortified.

Sweet Day!

Postby Ssezzkero on April 19th, 2015, 6:20 pm

It didn't take long for Codin to find his way back to Sezkero, Meya in tow. Sezkero was surprised, because she had hardly took a step into the festives before the orphans were back. She would have expected them to be a little while, gorging on sweets and enjoying themselves. "What isss it?"
Sezkero questioned suspiciously when Codin immediately adopted the wide puppy-dog eyes to plead for something. Normally, she wouldn't have minded sparing the children a few coppers to add to their candy pile, but if they had managed to spend their tickets and gobble up the candy in just a few chimes, she'd rather buy them a thousand toothbrushes.

"Remember when you said you would dance for us one day? Well, we found some music..." She could hear the whine building in his voice, and Meya worked her way to her brother's side, mimicking his puppy-dog eyes. Now they were tag teaming her, that wasn't fair. But Sezkero couldn't help cracking a smile.

"Do you really want it to rain on a day like thissss?" She teased the boy, but waved her hands forward, motioning for him to go so that she could follow. Even if she managed to activate her gnosis, it likely would be a whole day before the water came, not soon enough to ruin the festival. Anyway, she had been itching to try some of the new moves that Timothy and her hand come up with for others to see. To gauge their reactions and know whether they would fit well within her dance or not. As she followed the skipping children. It wasn't long before she began to hear the melody of the violin, coating the crowd with a lively tune to match the mood of the day.

She stopped as they neared the musician, which attracted the attention fo the children, ready to run to the front of the gathering crowd. "I will only danccce if you danccce assss well." She offered one hand to each child. Meya's face split into a grin and Codin groaned. Meya was pleased with the offer, but Codin's curiosity about her gnosis was too great for him to pass up the chance to see it in action. She would feel bad if she disappointing him, but she was also sure that she would not cause any rain that day. The boy didn't realize how little power her mark actually held. She was sure he was wishing for something more immediate and with more action, but she couldn not provide that for him.

And then she found herself skipping into the clearing with the children. Their twirls and hops demanded a bit of space for themselves and Sezkero hoped the musician wouldn't mind. Thankfully, Meya was a fair amount smaller than Sezkero, surprisingly rare among the children, but Codin was not. She could lift the girl's hand up to twirl with ease, but not for the boy. Unlike Timothy, Codin was a little more uncoordinated and gangly than the other child she had met, but he managed to scrape through with his dancing, which only made Sezkero giggle at his awkward moves, and made the boy blush.

Meya, who was having great fun, tried to copy Sezkero's moves, but since the snake had hardly any idea what she was doing herself, it only confused the girl. Neither seemed to care, since they were having too much fun.

When the song had ended, Sezkero had to turn to the violinist to compliment and thank her for the song. "That wasss beautiful! Thank you for letting ussss danccce, I hope you didn't mind?"
