By the time Telor's bare feet hit the docks, Syna's light had already warmed the wood and the waves below it. Now, the sunshine began its work on Telor's shoulders, and the loose fitting cloth that covered them. The wind was present, but not so harsh as to hinder his activities, and the skies were as clear as Telor had ever seen them.
It was shaping up to be a perfect day.
Telor had just finished a breakfast of fruit, (which had cost him but had been very worth it) and he was now ready to get on with his day. Today would be the day he cleaned out his whole casinor. The sailor was excited to spend time with his ship, even if it meant cleaning. It was far past due anyway, and a clean ship would be much nicer to live in than one that was covered in shells, seaweed, and moss from the salty sea.
As he worked Telor sung a work song softly under his breath. Having just woken up, Telor's voice was well rested, and produced a beautiful sound that made him want to sing loudly. However, he restrained himself, and kept the song to a personal volume.
"In Syna's light we work today,
Work today, work today,
In Syna's light we work today,
For she has blessed our motions.
For Laviku I clean my ship,
Clean my ship, clean my ship,
For Laviku I clean my ship,
He loves when I can sail well."
It was a child's song- one he had sung on the ship with his parents and siblings when they had wanted him to help out around the place. Although he knew now that it was only a trick to make young Svefra enjoy cleaning, the song still brought a warm kind of comfort to the man's heart and made his face break out in a grin. There couldn't be a thing to make this day better.

Ty had long since watched the sun rise over the edge of the water. With his back to a wooden post on the dock, he sat and sighed contentedly. His fishing pole, which he hadn't even bothered to bait, sat next to him, nearly forgotten about as the bob dipped up and down in the gentle waves. Something about just relaxing by the ocean made Ty feel like the Valterrian never happened.
Of course... it did.
Ty blinked a few times to shake himself from his reverie. The sun was high and it beat down on his bare shoulders. He stretched his neck and heard it pop, bringing a smile to his feet. He pushed himself slowly to his feet and looked out over the water. A sudden urge welled up in him, and before he knew it, he was running full speed toward the edge of the dock. He leaped off and plummeted down, and then...
No splash. Ty assumed his Seagull form and lifted high on the warm tendrils of air swirling off the water's surface. He flapped his wings lazily a few times, circling the same spot he was sitting. He saw his pole sitting there, and then he saw someone else. A young male walked by, seemingly keeping to himself. He was headed in the direction of a small casinor. Ever curious, Ty flew over the man, staying a few feet above his head. Maybe the Svefra would be gracious enough to toss him up a bit of fish.
Ah, what a life. |

Just as Telor had finished rounding up a bucket and a spare eating knife to scrape off the mussels, seaweed, and other mossy gunk on the ship, his work was interrupted by the distinct squawking of a seagull. The sailor closed his eyes momentarily and grinned for the second time that morning. The sound of the loud birds was obnoxious to some, but for the Svefra, it sounded like home and evenings on the docks with friends.
Looking up, Telor caught sight of the bird. He thought it might be looking down at his Tavan, but the small otter was absent. Instead, it seemed to be gazing at his bucket.
"Aww, I'm sorry little fella," Telor cooed in Fratava, "This isn't fish. It's just cleaning water. See?" The young sailor held out the bucket for the bird to examine.
"Much less exciting, I know. But I may be able to find you some if you stick around, eh?" Telor winked at the bird before picking up his knife and taking it to the old boards of the ship. Without looking to see if the bird was still present, Telor quietly continued to chat with him.
"This is my ship. She doesn't have a name, cause my sister, Loon? She was supposed to name it since it was hers. She said a ship is best named after its most influential journey, but she died awhile back, and now I'm not sure what she meant anymore. So she- the boat- is still nameless. One day, maybe I'll know. I'll name her something beautiful, and I'll have a whole crew. Everyone will say, 'Look! Here she comes! With that captain singing all his great songs. What a man!'
"Ah," Telor shook his head and turned to face the bucket once more, washing the knife free of all the mossy shyke he had gathered. "Who am I kidding? It's just a dream. A nice dream, sure, but still just a dream..."
The next time he opened his mouth, Telor spoke in Common, as though the bird might understand him if he spoke a different language.
"What about you? Do you dream of anything? Hah, besides fish, I mean."

Ty swooped and darted as Telor cleaned his ship. Though he couldn't understand the young Svefra, he took comfort that the sailor was speaking to him, even though Telor didn't realize that he wasn't just a seagull.
Just a seagull. Ty was much more than that, and he landed on the edge of the casinor as Telor ended his speech in his native tongue. Because Telor didn't look up, Ty understood him perfectly when he spoke the common tongue; he was in his human form.
He sat on the edge of the ship with his legs dangling into it. His eyes were glued to Telor as he cleaned, and as soon as the Svefra asked him if he dreamt of anything, Ty responded.
"Typically, no. It's usually all fish. But who doesn't dream to be something a little more, right?"
He laughed as he got Telor's attention. No doubt the Svefra would be surprised.
"And as much as I love fish, and fishing, I am always seeking adventure... Something to do. I love the water and the sky. They're metaphors, you know?"
He slipped down off the side of the ship and walked over to the bucket where Telor was cleaning his knife. He dipped a hand down inside and pulled up a piece of seaweed.
"They're about freedom. With the ocean and the sky, there is no limit. I mean, sure there is. But it feels almost endless. I'm Ty."
The Kelvic offered his hand to the man with the knife. |

Telor's head snapped up at the bird's response. His first thought was that he needed a drink. The second, much more rational thought, was that he needed a doctor.
Upon further examination, it seemed that he had encountered, not a mage or monster, but a Kelvic. A young, pretentious, and clever Kelvic at that. As a man, his body was on display for Telor's scrutiny.
The man's unkempt lump of hair was blond, though it neared the off-white of an eggshell in the light. There was a fine layer of scruff on his chin, outlining angular features and a soft smile. The man's muscles were respectably well-defined- especially so on his calves. All in all, not bad-looking, though Telor wasn't one to judge looks in men.
Slowly coming to the realization that the man- Ty- had his hand out, Telor took it and shook hands with a firm up and down.
"Telor." The Svefra nodded politely, but inside, he was stewing. He had been on the sea his whole life. He had traveled so far, and spent so many years calling the sea home. The sea and the sky meant more than freedom to him. In fact, they meant so much that they could not be described as anything else. They were the sea and the sky. The opinion couldn't stay inside for long, and Telor found himself talking before he could stop himself.
"I'm sorry, did you say you love the sea and sky because they're a me-met...because they're freedom? Can't you just love the sea and sky what they are?"

Ty wasn't shy about the nudity; perhaps it was naivete, but he didn't seem to be bothered. His wide smile was the most prominent feature anyway, and he sat down on the edge of the ship.
"I suppose I do. But I love them for more than what they are. Haven't you ever loved something for more than what it is?"
Ty looked around the deck of the ship, then back to the bucket. The shells and moss and seaweed were clumped together, but Ty ducked down and plucked a shell from the bucket. He ran his fingers over the slimy, rough shell and sat back again, looking content. Finally, he seemed to realize his nudity. It must have been the draft.
"You wouldn't have a pair of trousers I could borrow until I can go get mine from the Barrel, would you?" |

They were pretentious words from a former seagull, but they struck a chord with Telor. Perhaps he had only ever taken things at face value. Maybe he had never valued things for anything more than what he saw, and perhaps it was time that changed.
"You know what? I think I can round something up for you," Telor said softly.
The Svefra stood and stretched with an audible groan. He reached both his hands high, exposing a thin strip of flat stomach before dropping his hands and climbing aboard the old ship. The boat rocked and swayed as he walked, but the experienced sailor was able to not only stand it, but was also able to walk straight as it bobbed. He countered the weight in a careful and calculated manner that became more relaxed and more natural as he adjusted quickly.
"There should be a cloak below deck. You want me to get that for you? Would that be good enough?"
