Hitting Targets, Marking Targets

Postby Claudia Blackwood on March 13th, 2015, 7:48 am

5th Spring, 515 AV

It was the fifth day of spring. It was also Claudia's fifth day of being a squire. She was back in the training grounds with several archery targets located twenty feet away. It was situated not too far away, nor was it too near. She had a schedule training exercise arranged by her patron to work on her marksmanship skills.

Today, she was tasked by Ser Bastian to see how good her shots were, or how close she could get to a bullseye in this session. Ser Bastian knew that although she was not yet competent in the use of the longbow, she had always put in her utmost effort into every single training session she did. She was no slouch when it came to honing her skills, and treated every practice session seriously. He was proud of her. Although it had only been five days since the pair had met, the bond between pupil and mentor had grown steadily, with both of them hitting it off right away.

She started her warm-up exercises, stretching her arm muscles and loosening her tense shoulder and back muscles. The arm, back and shoulder muscles were the main muscles involved in the using of the longbow, and tense and uptight muscles would not do. Claudia got into a relaxed position with one foot on each side of the shooting line. Her feet was a shoulder-width apart, as that helped to maintain balance, and kept the body steady while firing. She took a deep breath, before remaining as calm and steady as she could. Nocking the arrow onto the bowstring, she pulled back the bowstring with the use of her index, second and third fingers and relying on the use of her thumb muscle with her elbow pushed back.

Releasing all three fingers at the same time, she loosed the arrow, and it travelled to its target, striking it somewhere near the edge of the outermost ring. All Ser Bastian did was sigh in response to her shot. He waggled his finger to her, indicating for her to continue shooting. She complied, nocking, drawing and firing off three more shots, with the first two remaining somewhere closer in the outer most ring, and last one finding itself hitting the tree trunk a short distance behind the target. She was way off on that one.

He clicked his tongue in response to her lousy shot, exclaiming

"What in the world was that? What kind of shots were that?! Have you never used a bow before? One would think you've only just started with the bow!"

Claudia's face blanched at the sudden onslaught of disparaging remarks. Her form was poor today, and coupled with her weak skill using the bow, she wasn't too surprised at what he had said. In fact, she kinda agreed with him in a sense. But that didn't mean she had to like it. She was ashamed at her shots, and knew she still had lots of bells of practice, which would probably involve tons of arrow shooting ahead of her if she wanted to attain an acceptable level of accuracy in her shots.

The targets were made with straw and constructed in a way that made the arrows easily retrievable without any noticeable damage. This allowed the arrows to be used again and again, without the archer expending a huge number of arrows.

Claudia gave a hasty apology to Ser Bastian, "Sorry ser, I'll try harder. My aim was off there." She readied another arrow before firing it off, her aim was true this time, and the arrow landed somewhere near the edge of the inner ring. Her patron then called for her to stop. "Alright, let's move on to something more interesting now." He grabbed a sack filled with what looked like round things in them from the floor, walking over to an empty wooden railing that formed part of the fence. As he took them out of the sack, she discovered they were some kind of fruit. Probably a melon of some kind. She was no expert on fruits. As she could see was that they were roughly ten times the size of apples, and green in colour. "Your task now is to shoot these fruits here with enough arrows that they fall off. I expect your arrows to hit the fruit itself, not anywhere else. Simple enough, don't you think?" She nodded and replied "Yes, Ser."

Claudia walked over to her new firing spot, preparing to move into position. Putting on her game-face, following the same routine as before, she got her feet in the right positions, shoulders relaxed and ready. Pulling an arrow from her quiver, she nocked it onto the bowstring, lining up her shot. Her first two marks missed the fruits completely, embedding themselves in the wooden railing. He gave out a loud exasperated sigh. "Oh by Yahal's amazing chest hair, shoot the petching melon, not the railing." She reddened in shame, as she drew another arrow for another attempt. Her eyes zeroed in onto the arrows intended position. With the shot lined up, she steadied her breathing, she began to draw back the bow, and counted to three. One. Two. Three. She released, firing the arrow. It shot towards the melon, hitting it at the top. Barely. "Too high! You almost missed that one. Work on your aim. Remember to account for the drop." Ser Bastian casually commented, with a softer sigh this time. Looks like this was going to be a long day. She readied another arrow. Too high? The optimum position should be slightly down. The drop was what people usually called the trajectory of the arrow. Arrows tend to drop after reaching the peak in their height. There wasn't alot of room for the arrow to hit, so it was pretty clear cut how much she had to adjust for.

She made sure to be careful with his eye-line as she raised the bow, drawing it back. Confidence filled her as she made her shot. She was sure of her aim this time. Loosing the arrow, she watched in anticipation as it zoomed past, hitting the melon squarely in the centre this time. She gave a jubilant smile at her patron, ecstatic that she had at least made a better shot this time. Her patron, however wasn't that impressed with her..yet. All he said was "Don't celebrate too early, as far as I can see, that melon is still standing, and you have plenty more to go." He made a hand gesture towards the rest of the melons sitting on the top of the fence. Claudia's face turned back into one of determination and concentration, as she turned back, facing her target. Readying arrows, she let them loose at the melons, peppering them with arrows loaded with the same determination as the previous ones, knocking them down. Bells went by, and as the last melon fell of the railing, Ser Bastian then gave her a yawn followed by a slow clap. "Well done, Claudia. That took forever, but at least you got it done in the end. See what you can achieve with some determination and practice. And not to mention some patience."

Hitting Targets, Marking Targets

With the stationary shooting practice out of the way, Ser Bastian had something else in mind for her. Something more challenging than what she had done so far this day. Enough of the stationary targets. It was time for something more exciting, less boring and with more of a kick to it, than shooting apples and targets. His new plan involved a hunting expedition in the Bronze Woods, situated in the Cobalt Mountain range, not too far away from the main city. So he then proceeded to make his plan known to Claudia. "Eh, that's enough of that boring targets stuff now, let's go on for something more interesting. What I've got in mind is a hunting trip in the Bronze Woods." She perked up at the mention of hunting and the Bronze Woods. She was no stranger to hunting or the Bronze Woods, and was quite fond of both.

The woods were a beautiful mystical place, filled with many varieties of both flora and fauna. Now that it was spring, the forests would be lively and filled with chatter of insects and animals once again, replacing the eerie quietness that took over the woods during the winter period. The plethora of varied fruit and vegetable-bearing flora, among the diverse colours of flowers would start to bloom once, adding some colour to the beautiful forests.

Claudia prepared her equipment along with her patron. Together they would make their way to the Woods, and they should be spared from any attacks from bandits or any other form of brigands. Both of them fully armed, and Ser Bastian was a skilfully trained and very competent Sergeant Knight. No bandit worth their salt would even attempt taking a fully armed knight together with his squire. Only the foolish sort would even think about attempting such a futile endeavour. With that said, the pair managed to have a rather safe journey to the woods, free from any encounter of any sort, though she certainly knew and felt eyes gazing on them as they walked on the path leading to the forests.

Whatever that was keeping its eye on them did not approach, and that was to its credit. As they began to arrive at the beginning edge of the woods, Ser Bastian briefly stopped before saying "All right, here we are. Your task is this, hunting a rabbit. Just one. I'm sure you can manage just one. Using just your bow and arrows, of course. This is still all about archery after all. Off you go now, I'll be keeping any eye on you."

Claudia simply nodded, not uttering a word, as she began to move out, looking out for any signs of rabbits in the woods. She knew the reason why he had gave her the task of hunting a rabbit. Hunting rabbits wasn't easy unless you had the know-how and the proper equipment and techniques as they lived in underground barrows. Her only hope was to come across one on the ground. She began to take a step lightly into the forests, swivelling her head around, as she scanned the surroundings flora.

Now that the green had returned to the woods, the environment was a much better scene to look at; compared to the bleak white landscape she was treated to when she came here in the winter. She grabbed her longbow from her back, holding it firmly. She treaded slowly on the forest undergrowth, keeping her eyes peeled as she moved further into the forest. Chimes later, still nothing. A bell later, still no rabbits. This was starting to look bleak for her. It looks like she would be failing this challenge.

Claudia lifted a finger into the air, moistened with water, checking for the direction of the wind. Animals of prey tended to be spooked when they sniffed a foreign smell in the air. She tried her best to apply whatever hunting knowledge she knew to finding this rabbit, but it was proving more and more difficult than she initially thought. After all, it was just a rabbit, how difficult could it be? That was what she thought. How wrong she was. In reality though, it was a different thing altogether.

She was feeling the foolishness of her stupidity right now. She felt so helpless, and was pretty certain she would fail the challenge. She was already exhausted by the shooting practice earlier in the day, and her arms and shoulders ached. She collapsed into the ground in a heap. Bells after bells have gone by, and she was no closer to finding the blasted rabbit than when she first started.

She had so many false calls by now, she was losing hope and morale by the chime. But she didn't want to disappoint Ser Bastian either. She had no to do this. Galvanising herself as she picked herself up from the floor, her attention was immediately drawn to a small rustle that appeared to be coming from the low-lying bushes up ahead. Getting down to a crouch, she couldn't believe her luck as her eyes laid upon a rabbit. At long last, a rabbit.

She visibly brightened as she made herself focus. She couldn't afford to screw this up. This was her one and only chance. If she lost this, she would never be able to find it again and would fail. As quickly as she could, she drew an arrow from her quiver, nocking it, struggling to keep it as quiet as she could.

Drawing back her bow, she took careful aim and kept in mind the steps she took earlier in the day, repeating the mantra in her head. She inhaled, lined up her shot, and let loose. The arrow shot towards the rabbit, but just as she thought she had it, the arrow embedded itself in the ground next to it. The animal was spooked and had began to hop away, fleeing for its dear life.

She got on a run, dashing through the woods after it and fortunately, her long legs were more than a match for the rabbit short ones, and she got within distance of the rabbit, as it ran into a clearing in the forests. With nothing but just the grass to obstruct her this time, she took another aim once more. She absolutely had to make it this time. She repeated the steps over in her head, as she drew, nocked, and fired. The arrow shot towards the rabbit, this time striking it down.

She let out a excited yelp as she scampered to retrieve her prize. She had done it. She sank to the ground in relief. She had done it. "Petch Yeah! Challenge Completed" she muttered with a smile.

Grabbing the rabbit by the scruff of its neck, she left the arrow in it as a proof to her patron, that she did indeed killed it with her bow. She then turned around as she made her back her patron. He would not be far away, she was certain. She was right, as a short distance her; he slid out from behind one of the trees. A beaming smile was on his face as he commented on her prize. "I knew you could do it, you have plenty of potential waiting to be unlocked in you."
