Solo So What Now?

Kei is now free of the grasps of slavery. Now what?

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

So What Now?

Kei stared at the small mound of freshly placed dirt. He loved the smell of it - it helped mask the stench of the dead man buried underneath. Kei couldn't have just left the man for the vultures, even if he had never knew him. This man helped him escape from the horrible life Kei had lived up until this point. This man who had freed him from slavery.

Kei was free, so why did he feel so empty?

After a brief moment of thinking, Kei determined that the most probable cause was that he had never known anything more than what was given to him. That's all he had ever done. Everything that Kei needed to do was told to him, so there was never any choice or question about what to do next. Now he was free and that over hanging sense of a higher being was gone, only it was replaced with the new feeling of questioning and uneasiness.

Kei was frightened to be on his own, if he was perfectly frank. He turned from the grave, picking up his few belongings and started off west. He wasn't sure why, but west seemed like the right way to go. It wasn't something that Kei could explain, it just was there. It was the only thing that made any sense at this point, even if there was almost no sense in it at all.

He continued moving though, simply for the fact that staying here left a bad taste in his mouth. There wasn't much to explore, mostly grass lands with grass so tall that he could hide in it. As it got darker, Kei decided that hiding the grass might not be such a bad idea. He didn't really know what kind of animals and other people lurked in this area. For all he knew, he could end up not waking up in the morning.

Kei shuddered. Death was never a pleasant thought. Death always made him think of his mother and Kei was never comfortable thinking about his mother. He pushed the thoughts away and laid down on his back, not really caring it anything or anyone saw him. He felt safe at the moment and that was all he could ever ask for. It wasn't like he was going to sleep anyways. Too much had happened this day and Kei would never be able to sleep at all.

Instead of trying to sleep, Kei reached out for his backpack and pulled out his mother's last journal. It was mostly empty save the first few pages. Kei skimmed over the first and second page, both only talking about the area that his mother had been in before she was enslaved. The third page, however, showed sketches of the night sky decorated with shimmering stars.

In her sketches, Kei's mother had traces several different constellations and jotted down their names. Kei was unable to read the names due to his mother's quickly written notes being sloppy, but he was able to find where each sketch was on the current night sky and traced it out with his finger.

After he had traced all the constellations he could identify, Kei dropped his hand onto his chest. What was the point in this...oh right. There was no identified point. Kei sighed aloud as he took a blade of the tall grass and began to toy with it. He'd have to find something to do and somewhere to go. That's just want the man wanted. The one who freed him wanted him to go and live his life.

So what was his life supposed to be like?

So What Now?

As Kei stared up at the sky, deep in a thought, a small disturbance in the grass was made. Kei sat up, broken out of his mind by the sound of rustling grass. He got on his knees, prepared to run.

"Who's there?"

He asked, his voice full of fear and uncertainty. There was no response, so Kei assumed that there was either nothing there, or it was simply an animal. Kei slowly began to back away from the direction of the sound, hoping that nothing jumped out at him because of his lack of weapon and skill. The rustling continued and now Kei could see where the grass shook as something moved from in it. A small hissing sound was heard and Kei back up and further.

Kei reached out for his things, but cursed at the fact that they were now closer to the snake than himself. In order for him to get his things, he needed to evade the snake.

Living as a slave for so long had worked against him in this sense. He never had to deal with animals; there were always guards that took out any animals that tried to come steal food. Because of his lack of experience, he was more than likely going to get bit, so in order for him to retrieve his belongings, he would have to plan everything out carefully and hope that the snake would not notice him and/or attack.

The snake was still hidden in the grass, so Kei had no idea where the snake would be besides the sounds it made that could possibly indicate location. After a moment of consideration, Kei decided that the best idea would to be to distract the snake in someway and grab his things, avoiding as much combat as possible.

Kei ran his hand across the ground, hoping to find a small rock or something of that effect to throw and distract the snake. Finding a small pebble, Kei threw it in the opposite direction of his location in the grass. A hiss and the grass rustling told Kei that the snake had - at least for now - been distracted by the pebble, giving him enough time to move closer to his things.

He made a grab for the backpack and began to move away from the area, this time being more observant; he didn’t want to run into another snake. After moving away to what Kei thought was a safe, distance, Kei stood up and began to walk normally. He stared off at the open land. There was nothing that he could see that would indicate civilization that he would like to go.

Kei went over the area again, this time finding a road that seemed to be used for wagons. It would be dangerous to travel simply on the road, but it would be the only sure way to find somewhere that he could stay that wasn’t crawling with snakes and other animals. Also, having no knowledge of the area is just as dangerous.

It was a challenge going through the tall grasses without a proper way to go, so the road would be a massive help. Kei decided that he would find out what he wanted to do once he got to whichever city or town he’d find on his way down the road, literally. He hoped that it would be open to Kelvics; it would be unfortunate to make his way all the way there just to be forced back out.

But right now, it didn’t matter. All that mattered was following the path and hoping for the best. Because hope was all that Kei had at the moment.

So What Now?

It was still dark when Kei spotted the wagon. It was hard not. Lanterns and torches adorned it and it was like a beacon of light. He was currently in eagle form - it was easier to fly and carry his bag than to walk all the way there - so he flew down to check it out. He had decided that he needed a break also. He had been flying for around two hours straight and his wings were tired, not to mention his backpack’s extra weight made it harder to fly for long periods of time.

Kei landed a few paces away and shifted back to his human form. He dressed himself quickly and began to follow the wagon on foot. It seemed to be filled with cargo for trade, mostly slaves and the produce said slaves had helped grow.

It was disgusting.

It wasn’t hard to follow the wagon; it had seemed that the horses needed to be rested and that they had been traveling for a while. The wagon slowed, then stopped, giving Kei an opportunity to go and get a close-up look.

The wagon was simple: wood that looked like it was decades old and a white cover that desperately needed to be washed. A few guards on horseback dismounted and began to dig through some other wagons for what Kei saw to be food and water.

He waited for the guards to leave before moving in to get a closer look at the roughest looking wagon. Upon closer inspection, it was clear that the wood used really was years old; splinters covered nearly every available space. The white covering - which now held more of a dirty brown color - had tears and holes all through it and looked like it would collapse at any given moment.

Inside the wagon, packed together like sardines, were slaves. Men, women, and children all sat together of many different races. Kei could spot some of his Kelvic brethren due to many of them wearing collars that would prevent shifting. All the slaves, though, wore dirty clothes that were covered in holes and splinters that Kei was sure were also in the people’s skin.

He pitied them and couldn’t stand to look at them any longer. He wished to help them, but it was obvious that he couldn’t. There were too many guards for the exact reason to guard the merchandise form bandits. At the same time, Kei cursed as himself for feeling relief; he had been these people just several hours before.

He could be like the man who had saved him; going in alone with little to nothing simply because what he saw was wrong. But Kei was not that man. Kei was neither brave or reckless enough to go charging in to save these people. He knew that the second he let one go, the guards would notice and A. Kill him on site, or B. Enslave him and force him back into the life he just escaped.

Kei couldn’t afford either, so he turned away, returning to his things. He had checked earlier and had found some money on the man that had died. Kei decided that he would help out. He would arm himself and find a group to help him free the slaves. He couldn’t stand to watch others suffer from the same fate he had; it just wasn’t right and it just wouldn’t do.

Kei undressed and packed his things before shifting and picking his bag up and flying down the path again. He was going to help them once he was able. That was his purpose, he decided.

Kei was going to free as many slaves possible and if he failed, he could go out saying that he tried.

Your Righteous Reward!

Kei

XP :
+3xp Observation
+2xp Tactics
+1xp Navigation
+1xp Wilderness Survival

Lores :
Freed By A Dead Man
Freedom Hollows The Soul
Self: Lack Of Purpose.
Mother: Sloppy Handwriting
Self: Ill-prepared For Combat
The Sea of Grass: Habitat of Snakes.
Going Wherever The Road Leads
Slavery: A Disgusting Trade
Self: Neither Brave Nor Reckless
All Slaves Must Be Freed
Self: Armed With Purpose

Note: Good start. I am interested to see what further adventures await Kei. I do want to make one slight point though:

It's safe to assume that knowing North, West, East, and South is common knowledge, but if you had written Kei observing the stars/sun for navigation you could have earned Navigation XP. Unfortunately I can't award that now. Simply because Kei doesn't really do much in the first post, I can't award you that much XP though I've tried to give you a few more Lores instead. I hope you understand.

I do compliment you on deliberately keeping your character weak (for example the tiring when flying and backing off from the wagon). It indicates that you understand that your character, at this stage of the game, is still vulnerable. Kudos on that!

If you have any questions, concerns, remarks, or comments regarding the grade, please send me a PM and we can work something out.
