This is Falyndar at its finest. Danger lurks everywhere - in the ground, in the trees, in the bush. Only the strongest survive...

A Fish and a Hunt
21st of Winter, 514 AV

She told herself that it was simply because of the wealth of wildlife that she was always drawn back to the Kandukta Basin several times a season despite the dangers, but to be honest Tinnok didn't fully know what brought her back. She had mixed feelings, remembering the time when she encountered the undead witch here, but she had also met so many creatures she had never before seen, like the giant otter, the expansive amount of fish, and the different fish and insect hunting birds and their prey. The basin was a mecca for jungle life, and perhaps it was her mark and thus her that felt most at home here, surrounded by all of it that kept her coming back looking for new creatures to learn about and encounter.

She padded up quietly as she could to the edge of the water. She had been learning how if she turned herself sideways, drew her body somewhat downwards and wove it through the branches this way it could cut down on noise. It was easiest when breezes swept through, where she could mask her movements with the already rustling of leaves and branches, but the less of her body touched the surrounding plant life the better.

She was on all fours by the time she made it to the edge of the water. One by one she placed the majority of her weapons onto the ground. Two daggers, her bow and quiver, her spear, and covered them up with some reads. One dagger she kept clasping it in her teeth. She crawled out onto the mixture of sand and rocks to the lapping edge of the water and summoned up her res, directing it into her hands and feet. Between her fingers she stretched and pulled the skin to form webbing, which was a repeat of her time with a particular otter. Upon her feet, however she wanted to try something a bit more complex, and began to lengthen the bones in her feet, especially the toes. As she did so she formed the same type of webbing, but it took up much more of her feet than before. She paused midway through to scoop up a curious bull frog that was watching her, pulling gently on one of his back legs to see how the extensive webbing their connected, and the strange shape of his long toes. She chuckled as she felt the anger of her mishandling him. Though small when it came to the food chain of Falyndar, it was clear this male thought himself on top of his own little piece of the basin.

She wriggled her toes experimentally, they felt frail and much too long, but she knew once she got into the water they would help immensely. Still clinging to the frog's foot she adjusted the length of her toes so with the webbing they created a nice rounded, if bizarre looking pair of webbed feet. She then profusely apologized to the bull frog and returned him to his spot, where being so offended, he swiftly disappeared into the water with nary a few ripples.

Tinnok not wanting to stand on her awkwardly long feet, slid on her rump into the water, dagger still in her mouth. Once she the cool liquid reached her waist she shifted around, pushing gently off the dirt with her feet and kicked experimentally, webbed feet pushing her powerfully through the water. She kicked again and it brought her far from shore, she dove down below the waves pushed herself down, then curled her body and kicked hard, driving herself up to the surface where she leapt out of the water, her back arcing to perform a jump, landing almost gracefully headfirst in a back flip back into the water. Then she realized she had probably lost the element of surprise...

She experimented with ways of kicking through the water first one foot at a time then both of them together. When she moved her legs in unison it felt more powerful, but she didn't feel like she had the same control, so in the end she let each leg independently, slowing her pace and taking her through the water. She would practice holding her breath for as long as she could, then surface gasping, startling nearby fish and insects. Her best try currently was 40 ticks, though at the end of this she couldn't count properly and was hovering below the surface, air streaming out around her dagger and out of her nose. The idea of morphing gills had occurred to her, but knowing little to nothing of how fish properly breathed beneath the water, she wasn't really going to attempt such a transformation.

Instead she stopped playing her little game and headed into the deeper waters of the basin looking for potential prey. She was a large sight, something most any other creature could see coming and avoid, to which many creatures did. Compared to aquatic life she was slow and awkward. As a being that was used to being agile on land, this didn't sit well with Tinnok, but perhaps that was another reason she was trying to get better at her maneuverability in the water. It was harder to be quick and agile in this substance, but the more she learned here the more it would help her later.

Surfacing after 30 long ticks below the water, Tinnok concentrated on surfacing just her head, eyes and nose specifically, and looking around her, feet moving gently to propel her, but not disturb the water more than necessary.

She moved more slowly the deeper she got, slowly moving around the border of the basin, continuing this technique until she spotted several dark shapes upon the water. She shifted her feet kicking back in order to stop moving forward for a moment and hone in on them. The sounds of muted squawks carried well over the surface of the water, and after a few moments Tinnok realized they were knob-billed ducks, and by some miracle they hadn't spotted her yet. About 40 feet away Tinnok gathered a plan that was nearly sure to fail in her mind, then took in a deep lungful of air and dove down into the water.

Her large webbed feet kicked as strongly as she could force them to through the cool clear water, diving deep in the hopes that she could push herself up from the depths of the basin beneath the small gathering of ducks, and grab one? Stab one? Her plan didn't have a lot of finesse or even thought to it, but the half breed seemed a bit too excited about testing out her limited swimming skills to care.

Tick by tick air left her lungs, speed increasing. Her head craned up to see light filtering down and shadowy rippling objects obstructing it, then surged towards the surface, pushing herself, lungs burning for oxygen.

The ducks realized what was coming 2 ticks before Tinnok exploded out of the water, screaming at the top of her lungs and flailing. Scared out of their minds the lightly speckled ducks took off towards nearby trees and into the foliage. Tinnok grabbed uselessly at them, but was nowhere close to actually keeping one from escaping.

Settling back down into the water the half breed began to laugh, not even particularly mad that her strange scheme had failed utterly, she then began to swim shore ward, remembering the Giant Otter who helped her find food last time she was here.

Finding a rocky alcove in the basin Tinnok dove down and was able to find more than a few large freshwater crabs minding their own business below. The first one she caught she dashed upon the stones immediately, and ate, sucking the meat out of its belly, and cracking open its claws to get at the essence there as well.

The rest she kept live and in her pack, trapping them one by one. She had a dozen when the burning in her legs made her stop and slide back onto shore. Though she carefully directed her res to return her feet to normal, her fingers massaged the shape back into her toes, feeling the bones and skin from the inside and out as she made sure they returned to the proper shape and length.

She left the Basin still as inexperienced as hunting and fishing in the basin as she had been, but with a growing knowledge of the ways she could aid herself in the water.

Notes: Hello, Tinnok. Sorry to pick on you! Someone lower down the list has been begging for a grader to check their work so I'm powering through as much work as I can tonight! I really envy Tinnok’s life in the jungle. Your writing makes me want to play a Myrian so that I can skulk around the jungle too. As always, enjoy the rewards and let me know if you think I have missed anything here. Be sure to edit your grading request!
