There were times the Drykas woman questioned why she had ever thought to leave the freedom of Endrykas behind for a congested and contained city like Syliras. Feeling herself jostled around by the throng of bodies that lurched to and fro within the busy Bazaar, that question certainly came to mind. She felt trapped in a way, stuck as if lost at sea and unable to swim, forced to follow the way the mass moved as if being swept along on a current.

The Bazaar was an odd place for one who had grown up so accustomed to life on the Sea of Grass. It existed beneath the ground, deep within the belly of the fortress, tucked away from Syna's warm glow and Zulrav's caress. Naturally, this felt wrong to one so accustomed to always having the open sky above her head yet, despite this, she found a part of it oddly comforting, albeit in the strangest and most twisted of ways. Perhaps it was the buzz she felt from the energy that came from being at this depth, surrounded by so many bustling forms, but she felt as if it gave her life.

In a way, it also vividly reminded her of her past. There had been a time when she had lived beneath the ground with her people. A fair few of the Drykas had sought The Underground – an ancient warren of underground tunnels that snaked all the way throughout the Sea of Grass – during the Djed storm of 512, tipped off by Riverfall and the messages found in the web. It was not a pleasant thing to reflect on and her skin prickled with goosebumps as she looked around, seeing bits of The Underground around her here in the Bazaar.

It had been a miserable experience for all involved, being stuck in those dank, dark caverns, deaf and blind to the world above after the storm ripped through, causing severe damage to the web. There had been so much death and suffering, especially amongst the animals her people had brought with them, but it had been a necessary means to an end. There had been so much Djed pushed into the world after Ivak's release, the people of the open plains and fragile tent cities had no defense against such ravaging destruction. Certainly all would have perished if such actions had not been taken.

But the lower levels of the Fortress City did not have that same sad feel to it, that feeling of fear and pain and desolation, and that momentary wave of nostalgia passed as swiftly as it had come. She had spent very little time within the enclosed areas of the fortress city and even less time down here in deep pit of the city, preferring to keep the sky above her whenever possible, yet she felt a tug of curiosity as she looked about the busy sprawl before her. There was a need, a desire to poke and prod around, to see where paths led and what she might find at their ends. But then she reminded herself her reason for being down within the Bazaar, of her purpose for the day, and smiled broadly. Today she was twenty five.

Although the number sounded far older than she felt, she still embraced it, feeling it necessary to celebrate in her own way. It had been a while since she had had any cause to celebrate and today seemed like a good enough day than any. With this in mind, she had decided that today she would do something she usually never would have thought to do. Today she would challenge herself in the most absurd way: today she'd purchase something completely unnecessary and superfluous to her existence. Whereas The Underground had been a place of starvation and strife, the Bazaar was one of plenty and she wanted to take full advantage of this and rid her mind of any further connection with that horrible time. However, as a practical person, it wasn't like her to spend precious mizas on something that served no purpose and so she knew the task she set for herself would not be an easy one. She simply reminded herself to try and listen to her heart rather than her head.

[The Great Bazaar] All Things Shiny and New

Escaping the throng that had pushed her along in its wake, she took a good look around to try and get her bearings. She had moved deep into the Bazaar and appeared to be standing in a bit of an alcove near the rear Western end. There were plenty of stalls and tables set up around her, all filled with items of all shapes, sizes, colours and types. She found beauty here, just as she would have on the open plains, and listened as the merchants shouted over the din of humming voices, hawking their wares. It she shut her eyes, she likened it to songbirds coming in to roost, their noisy chatter not too unlike the lilty calls of the peddlers.

She wasn't entirely sure what she was after and, therefore, merely drifted from one stall to the other, willing fate to work its magic or for something to reach out and grab her.

Siddling up to one stall bedecked in colourful ceramic items, she perused the pieces, smiling all the while. “
So beautiful,” she murmured, mostly to herself, but the merchant manning the stall replied heartily, “Oh, yes, of course. Only the best pottery in all of Sylira! Guaranteed to last twenty seasons! And painted by one of the best – and Akvatari at that. You won't find anything better!

The blonde nodded, her warm smile still present. She picked up a bowl and studied it quietly, admiring how the torchlight reflected off the polish. It was a stunning piece, painted in rich, cold tones and there was a deep underlying sense of melancholy within the lines and shapes that made up the design. Sadly, the piece was not what she was after, none of them were no matter how lovely. She'd find a practical reason to make use of whatever item she liked the most and today was not the day for practicality. So she bid the merchant farewell, wishing them luck, before she moved on.

From there she came upon a table piled with books and blank journals. Beautiful turkey feather quills laid scattered about more for decorative purposes than as items to be purchased and Tanna paused to run a hand over an intricate looking glyph that was stamped deeply into the leather cover of one of the books. Tracing the glyph idly, her thoughts were broken as a man bellowed, “
Careful, girl. Books are not play things.

His words gave her a bit of a start and the shied back, clutching her hand to her chest. “
Sorry, I did not mean to disturb.” Her brown eyes darted from the man to the book and then back again, “It is pretty shape. Does it have meaning?

The man eyed her warily before scoffing, “
Of course it does.

Tanna ventured, “
Then do you know what shape means. Can you tell me?

It's a Reimancy book. Very special. Very valuable. I won't sell it unless the price is right.

It was a word she did not understand but she offered a smile all the same. With a bob of her head, she thanked him and then moved on after casting the piles of books one last glance. One day she'd have a book; she might even get herself a journal to write her own stories in. One day. One day

It was as she reached a makeshift table, decorated in paint, a beautifully woven blanket and numerous large feathers tied on leather strips, that she gave pause. It had an arch built above the table and, from that arch, a number of stunning and vibrant pieces of blown glass sun-catchers hung alongside ornate glass pendants dangling from long chains of varying types. The items turned and twisted lazily, as if it were too much a chore to move in the musty, stale air.

It's all so lovely” she remarked as she drew close, as attracted to the many items spread across the table as a moth to a flame. The red haired woman manning the stall gave a faint smile, eyeing the blonde imperiously.

Tanna's hand fluttered over the glass items that were on display, marvelling at the skill in which they had been crafted. They glittered in the torch light, dazzling the blonde, enchanting her further.

The red haired woman said nothing yet eyed the Drykas like a hawk, wary of the way the woman touched the items.

Tanna paused as she caught sight of one item dangling above, catching the torch light in such a manner it glowed a brilliant yellow-orange, reminding her of Syna's glow. “
That one,” she lifted a hand to point at the small, round pendant hanging above her, “it is beautiful. Like Syna's face. Can you bring down?” In her mind, she had already decided it was the piece she wanted.

The red haired woman eyed her for one long moment before she reached up and unclasped the copper chain that the pendant hung from. Bringing it down, she offered a practiced smile before speaking in equally rough Common, “
Hand-blown from Wind Reach. You like?

Tanna didn't like it, she loved it.

Nodding vigorously, her smile grew and dimpled her features, “
Yes, very much.” Touching a finger to it, she caressed the bauble lightly, careful of how fragile it was. On closer inspection, she saw that it wasn't actually a ball but more a tear drop, albeit fat. The piece of umber glass was just a bit more than an inch long, its width just less.

Her thoughts were interrupted as the red haired woman ventured, “
If you like.. then I have other pieces. Much nicer. Better colours. More detail.” She moved to collect some pieces she had in mind to offer the blonde but Tanna saw no need.

She respectfully looked over the pieces the woman had hand-picked for her but shook her head, smiling, “
Thank you. So pretty, but I like this one best.” She had yet to move her finger from the bauble.

The red haired woman frowned but nodded, putting the pieces back in their place. “
You sure.. so plain. I have other umber pieces. More exciting. Better styles.

Tanna thanked her once more but declined. The simple pendant was all she wanted.

How much for it?” Even though the blonde had already bought it in her mind, there was the very real issue of mizas having yet to be exchanged that kept it from being hers in reality.

Two pinions,” the redhead paused, then, noting her err and gracefully corrected herself, “Or two gold-rimmed mizas.

Cringing internally at the price, Tanna found herself eyeing the piece. She had little knowledge of the value of such an item but she hadn't expected it to be that much. Unable to hide her frown, she ventured, “
Two gold mizas? But you said it was plain. How much would more fancy pieces be?

The red haired woman eyed her ruefully before waving to a clear glass ball that held a dandelion trapped within its walls, “
This one is four gold-rimmed mizas.” Her hand fluttered to a red vial, “This one is twenty one gold-rimmed mizas..

Tanna interrupted her before her the woman's lithe hand could flutter to another piece, “
I see.” Pausing for a few ticks, she mulled it over. As much as she had planned on buying something superfluous, she hadn't planned on spending a great deal. In fact, she realised she didn't want to spend more than a gold miza and said as much, “I have one gold miza.. will you take that for piece I like?

The woman pursed her lips, looking unimpressed, “
I do not wish to go below two for pendant with chain. I will do one gold miza for pendant only.

Tanna tugged at the braid she wore over her left shoulder, stroking the thick, loose end. She swore she remembered copper items being considerably cheaper than silver or gold and, from what she could recall, copper chains were five silver mizas, at best. “
But copper chain only five silver mizas.” With that said, she drew one gold-rimmed miza from her pack and set it on the table next to the umber pendant. “I will do one gold miza.

The red haired woman frowned openly as she gave the blonde a stern once-over. After what felt like eternity, she finally replied, “
Five silver-rimmed mizas and we have deal.

Tanna grumbled inwardly.

In the end, her desire for the piece overruled her fear of being taken advantage of and she rummaged around for the necessary silver. Setting it on the table, she pushed the mizas forward, moving her hand away one the redheads delicate fingers reached for them.

Turning her attention to the pendant, she picked it up and smiled, holding it in her palm as she tilted it to a fro, watching how the light danced over the curved glass. Delighted, she drew the chain up to her neck and clasped it in place, hands sliding down the length of the chain to the pretty glass bauble that hang from it. The pendant rested just below the bottom of her windmark and, as far as Tanna was concerned, it couldn't have been more perfect.

Bidding the redhead farewell, she took her leave, heading back up towards the surface, eager to see how her new pretty looked in the sunlight.
