PRE CREATION HISTORY
498
Ruhama, from the tents of Jezrahiah, of the Sons of Rapa, was a beautiful and spirited woman of the Benshira. One of the eldest daughters and of a wealthy merchant, Ruhama was one of the finest singers of her Tent and her father's favorite. She was meant to marry a fine man of the Benshira, from the tents of Havid, but her defiant spirit led her down a dangerous, difficult path. In the summer, almost the fall of 498, Ruhama wandered into the tent of an unnamed Benshira man and conceived Arandia.
499 - 505
Although Ruhama's father and mother did not have the heart to send her away, Ruhama spent the rest of her time with the wandering Benshira as an outcast. It was a difficult situation for both mother and daughter; although they were fed and begrudgingly taken care of, adults were openly contemptuous and children were cruel. Ruhama became resentful and restless.
Winter 505 - Winter 506
With the help of other wandering merchants, Ruhama traveled from her Tent and the deserts of Ekytol to Yahebah, where her father had her followed to bring her back. To escape her father's men she traveled again to Ahnatep, but did not stay long. Ruhama, still Benshira in her heart, was unable to cope with the wildly hedonistic culture of Ahnatep. So she traveled with a small group of people who were on their way to Claridon, by way of the caravan routes on the Sea of Grass. Tragedy struck when a group of bandits overtook their caravan. Ruhama managed to flee with Arandia into the Sea of Grass, where after a night of terrified huddling together in a treetop, men of The Watch found them and took them to Endrykas.
Ruhama met Ioanis Reddawn, a Yakhtai of The Watch who became infatuated with Ruhama's eyes and voice. He took her as his wife and, Ruhama, being used to the harsh realities of nomadic living and tired of trying to find a place she and her daughter could fit in, stayed in Edrykas with him. Ruhama did not enjoy the same rights as Ioanis' other wives. The children were cruel to Arandia. But Ruhama, tired by now of fighting what she believed to be Yahal's way of punishing her for her disobedience, decided to stay in Endrykas despite their low standing in society.
Arandia was taught the ways and laws of the Drykas. The girl soon adapted to their ways, but when they were alone Ruhama still spoke to Arandia in Shiber. Ruhama taught her to weave and to sing, and to be obedient and accepting of the fate Yahal had given them. Perhaps one day, her mother liked to say, if Arandia was good, Yahal would reward her. Arandia kept the memory of Shiber from a poor copy of the Penita Scrolls that her mother gave her, and from hymns of praise to Him.
Winter 514
Ruhama died of an illness, a "cold wind" in the early days of Winter. In this month, the winter of her fifteenth year, Arandia earned her windmarks (a little late) when a Strider bound to her.
Arandia began her informal apprenticeship with Nehrar Tenderbloom of The River Flower. (Arandia is shy with the Tenderbloom family and often only lingers around the River Flower to learn by observation, sometimes too meek to ask questions.)
Spring 515
Ioanis Reddawn, who had a great fondness for Arandia, died trying to save pavilions of Drykas in a freak fire. Arandia and the biological children of Ioanis Reddawn were given marks of mourning to honor their late patriarch.
