Appearance Quinlan makes an imposing silhouette, tall and broad. He is just on the heavy side, excepting a particularly lean season. At a glance, some might call him rugged; such is the managed image he chooses to express. Light brown hair kept short for practicality and neat for presentability. A shadow of stubble, so that the working men might take him seriously, but never scruffy if he can help it. Utilitarian clothing for day-to-day, but as clean and mended as he can keep them. Hazel eyes that may hint at his true feelings to those that know him well.

Personality Quinlan is a man of eclectic interests and various desires, most of which stem from his paramount ideal: complete self-determination. Not simply to choose between the brown shack or the brown hut, or to work for the butcher or the barkeep. But to travel without fear of the unknown. To spend without fear of need. To stuff in as much of the world as his head can contain. Conversely, he struggles with bouts of restlessness and discontent. He resists recognizing authority beyond what is necessary to get what he wants. And for him, a person may be equally valuable as a friend or a resource; those close to him may, on occasion, feel used. He is keen on opportunities to improve himself or his status. The more proficiency and personal wealth he can accumulate, the closer he feels to his dreams.

History Quinlan's childhood in Zeltiva was one of relative comfort. His father was a shopkeeper, and his mother helped manage affairs. From the time Quinlan could walk and carry a sack, there was always work to do. But there were also things to eat. This was better than many across the land could say, as his father was wont to remind him whenever he might grumble. Quinlan's father was not nearly the most shrewd tradesman in Zeltiva. But what he lacked in pecuniary matters, he often made up for in charm. For instance, he made it a point to try to learn at least one welcoming phrase in the various languages of the tapestry of peoples that steadily flow through the port city. It mostly served him well, even if his pronunciation was sometimes comical. And in Quinlan was seeded an ethusiasm for the new and different. Young Quinlan met many customers, and gained a respectable handle on the tongues of those he found most intriguing. Quinlan was old enough to remember his parents' plan before it went up in smoke. It had been to save enough money to see Quinlan comfortably through Zeltiva's College of Applied Skills, and make him into a true scholar. From there, they hoped, the city would be his oyster. But his mother died giving birth to his brother, Rolth. Their home was never the same. Lacking her head for planning, his father struggled to keep their affairs in order. Within a few years, most of his father's coin went to propping up his business and keeping up house. Later years were defined by floating between jobs and independent studies as Quinlan's thin purse and fluid attention dictated. His relationship with his father and brother cooled as time went on and he grew more restless. But he could not yet bring himself to move on until, in the winter of 513 AV, his father joined his mother in the beyond. As Quinlan watched his brother Rolth inherit the family business, which had waned to one market stall, he began to focus fully on what he truly wanted for himself.
