The summer heat was at an all-time high. Or at least as high as the mixed blood percieved it could be. Could the temperature raise any higher? Would it simply bake every living creature alive in the process.

"Uhhhh." The audible groan rattled the half-Zith's throat and she struggled to muster the strength to kick the edge of the blanket from her thigh. Sweat coated her skin and the sheets of her shift clung to her ribs, twisting around her chest from the previous night's tossing and turning.

When it became apparent the heat was too much to allow her to stay spread out in her tent, the mixed blood squinted her eyes open, taking in the early morning light that illuminated the thick canvas of her tent. You would think shade would help with the heat. Mayra rolled onto her back, throwing her arms out so she formed a star on her tent floor. The tiny mixed blood only barely reached each side of her bedroll, but laying on the layers of clothe only added to the uncomfortable heat.

"Never too early." She croaked to herself, bending to grab her waterskin, draining it of its last warm water.

Groggily, the usually active half-Chaktawe yanked her pants on, followed by her shirt. A glance at her comb dragged a defeated sigh from the mixed blood and she begun to pick through her hair, pushing it back into it's place. Once she was prepared for her day off from work, Mayra snagged her dagger and frog, securing the two items to her waist.

"Hey, gloomy lady!" Mayra wouldn't have bothered with the obscure and thick accented shout, had the shouter not been right in front of her. Or speaking common, that always got her attention. "Going to metal chest?"

"What are you on about?" She glanced at the little Drykas, would couldn't have been more than twelve staring up at her.

"Going?" The thick accent asked again. Mayra moved her hand to ehr empty waterskin that was slung across her hip. She had meant to go to the stream across the white district, but she was curious what this "metal chest" was.

"Yea sure, take me to it."

"No, no." The boy giggled at her and she squinted at him. "I not allowed."

"Well what is your mother going to do about it? Just go!" She urged the boy. He was a free child, there was no reason for him not to.

"Not. Allowed." He repeated, slashing his hands in front of his face. But the boy stepped forward, a sudden change in his expression. In an instant the mixed blood woman went from feeling confused to utterly helpless when she caught the look in his eyes. Folding his hands in an innocent fashion, she watched his dark eyelashes bat at her for a tick before he spoke again. "Bring me something please?" Clearly the phrase had been practiced again and again until it was perfect, although probably not enough to rid himself of his weird choppy accent. Mayra was defeated in an instant.

"You really don't need to try so hard on me." She reached out to pat the kid's head. "I'll sneak you something. But don't tell your mom, she won't like it. If she kills me, you have to at least attempt to defend me. I don't want to die by these barbarians." The mixed blood felt like a sucker as an accomplished grin split the boy's face in a second. Perhaps he didn't understand everything she said, but the boy understood when he had won.

"Wait, where is it?" She turned back to the child, but he was gone. Clearly he was serious when he said he wasn't allowed. This child is going to have me slaughtered. She thought sarcastically to herself, deciding that first she would fill her water. Then she would simply drop into the market to grab a copper-worthy candy for him. She was sure the child wouldn't care so long as he god illegal goods, according to his mother.

Sighing, she dropped her hands by her side, trudging towards her intended stream. Txiro looked up as she rounded the otherside of her tent, and she only met the beast's gaze. She had felt as if she was at a stand-off with teh horse. He enjoyed his pampering at her inexperienced hand for his first season with her. But once she had recently decided she would attempt to figure out how to take care of the lazy pony, he got touchy. So the stare wasn't exactly friendly, but Mayra was sure we was imagining it as well. The horse probably had no care whatsoever.

When she reached the stream, Mayra was not surprised to find her shirt stuck to her ribs like paste, the heat making her skin damp and her head feel especially groggy. Perhaps it was not the morning, but the heat. The mixed blood crouched, uncapping her water-skin as she did so, before scooping it into the current, letting the clear water do the work for her, filling the leather.

Before she had finished, a bright flash caught her attention and Mayra glanced up, curious. Seeing nothing, Mayra stuffed the cork back into her water-skin and stood. Again a flash caught her attention, but this time it was less of a sudden light, and more of a glint of metal. Bending slightly, black eyes squinted in the direction of the glint. Adjustingher height slightly, she saw the glint of metal once more, pinpointing where it had come from, or at least what two tents she could slip between the reach it.

The mixed blood wasn't quite sure why she did, but Mayra was too curious to write the glint off as a simple pot or pan left out in the morning sun. The first flash was to bright and quick to be a glint of metal.

Balancing back on her feet, the Mixed blood took a few steps back, the lethargic heat wearing off as she bounded forward, hopping over the small stream with ease. It was only a few meters before Mayra reached the two light colored tents, and she picked up her feet more, keeping them from dragging in the grass and making noise. Careful to balance her weight on her heels, Mayra slipped between the two tents ears perked for the first sign of activity. Once she reached the front the bay of a goat started her, and Mayra hopped to the side, looking at the animal that produced the noise. No barbarians for a few ticks. She pleaded to herself, slinking through the unusually quite lane of tents. A few people meandered about, which relaxed the foreigner slightly as she navigated the lanes until she found where she thought the glint had come from. And sure enough there it was.

The metal chest the boy spoke of didn't seem to be simply metal. Some expensive material had made this extraordinary design. "Metal chest" was a cruel description, but then agian the young child probably didn't grasp her common as well as his won language. And she couldn't even think up a name for the strange fantastic metal.

A chatter of Drykas sprung out from the man next to her and she meerely glanced at him, not understand. He pointed to the chest and asked something. She knew few signs, but ther ewas one she knew well. "I don't understand." Confusion. She threw her hands up to form the only familiar sign to her. The words were so practiced, she hardly thought about them as being in a differnt language, but those words were all she knew.

"You have to give it something." He repeated in common, pointing at the chest. "Did you bring it?" Mayra squinted and grimaced at the man. It made no sense to her. "If you give something precious to the chest, it will give you something back." He explained at the sight of her confusion

"Did you give it something?" She inquired, curious about why he knew this.

"No."

"Why not?"

"My thing is too precious." He shrugged casually, turning to return to the shade of a tent, crouching by a water bucket and dipping his hands in, rinsing them off.

"Well then why does it have to be valuable?" She crossed her arms, stepping over to the chest and nudging it with her foot. She hadn't exaclty expected the glimmering metal to be light, but she assumed it would at least budge from it's place, or react to her foot in anyway, but the mixed blood compared it to kicking a mountain. There was not one effect from her nudge.

"I don't know how the God's work. This must be of their design." The man spoke simply, and Mayra first realized he was only. Probably in his late forties, around the age her father had passed. Wisdom was not something to be questioned from elders. But then again she didn't beleive in his fantasies, so how wise could he be?

"The Gods, huh?" Mayra murmured, but the man didn't hear, as she crouched by the chest. "You've heard of magic, yes?" She turned to him as he re-approached, wringing his hands across.

"I know of magic. And I know this is not any I've heard of before."

Mayra pursed her lips. "What do I give it?" She asked, crouching down towards the chest, her thoughts flew to the fragment on her chest. She had many other scales from the Ixam of course, but Mayra had always held onto her first glimpse of the magnificent creatures. It was scratched and fractured and simply tied to a strand of twine and wrapped across her wrist a few times. The mixed blood didn't find much precious, rarely did she hold onto things longer than a few seasons out of necessity. But this useless scale had always stayed by her side, even if she couldn't form words to describe why.

"Something precious. I suppose. Others had given it things they didn't want and in return they got less than what they gave away. Other's gave it things they couldn't live without and returned with treasure I cannot describe." She watched as he reached out and opened the lid of the chest for her, and there was nothing inside of it. Plain fabric lined the walls and nothing more. It was a regular chest on the inside.

"And you wouldn't give your thing up. Why?"

"My most precious thing is my Strider. He, I will never give up." Mayra chuckled.

"Fair enough. But, what should I give up?" She inquired, lazily. She was amused by this proposition that this chest replaced your most valued item with something more so. She doubted it, but then agian she carried little that she considered valuable.

"Something you never take off." He said simply , as if reading her earlier thoughts. The amusement dissipated when she realized he was serious. She wrapped a hand around her wrist, running a thumb over the scale that rested on her skin. Was it worth it? It was a mere scale, but it was her first scale. It was the only thing she actually wanted in her entire life. She wanted the Ixam more than freedom and this scale had opened the door for her.

The lethargic heat was taking over again and Mayra swallowed a heavy tongue, glancing up at the man who crouched beside her.

"Clearly you don't want to give it up. But you have no windmarks, so you have no strider. You're thing is not as important as mine." She heard the man stand, but didn't watch him walk away. Normally she would have been insulted by the phrase. Of course her scale was important. It was her key to the Ixam, it was her first step in the direction of where her life was meant to take her. But Mayra had only a scant understanding of these people and their horses, but it was enough to know she would never understand such a relationship, animal or human.

But did she want to give up the only thing that kept her going? The one reminder of why she hadn't run back to the strange city of illusions were she felt at least welcome among the strange civilized folk, unlike the barbarians who regarded her as little more than a stray cat.

Unwrapping the worn twine from her wrist, Mayra flipped the scale in her palm once more, before tossing it in. She placed a hand on the top of the chest for a few ticks, eyeing the scale carefully. Without thinking about it, Mayra flicked her wrist and the lid closed. Petch. She immediately reached for the latch again, but forced herself to keep from clawing it open.

Perhaps this thing didn't work. She could open it back up and get her scale back no problem. Or perhaps it did...

The latch locked tightly and when the woman released her scale both physically and mentally the magic of the chest slowly started to take place. A light so bright it caused the woman to squint, traced the band around the middle of the silver chest and when the circle was complete, the latch came undone and Mayra was free to lift the lid.

Inside the chest in a blue sling of silk sat a large egg the size of two hands cupped together. The shell of the egg was soft and dimpled, and when the woman reached in to take her gift, whatever lay inside the off-white egg moved and closed its jaw against the soft shell in an attempt to claw its way to freedom.

Moments later the egg was broken and a small, blue tongue flicked out as if to taste the air, catching the end of one of Mayra’s fingers and cementing the beginning of a bond that would last a lifetime. Suddenly she understood the meaning of that special relationship between man and strider and what caused the Drykas to treat their animals as they did.

In the coming seasons Mayra would find that the Cyphrus Ixam would respond only to her call, no matter the skill of any animal handler who stumbled upon him. His forked tongue would remain blue while his light grey scales would mature and darken as he grew into adulthood. Though the black eyed Ixam moved relatively slowly on land, Mayra would soon discover what an apt swimmer she had on her hands.
