Nearing the 8th bell

While he rested, she stood at the table, surveying the supplies she had there to work with, and trying to decide the best course of action to take next. She wiped out the mortar and pestle and took up a small piece of the turmeric root, placing it within. With a practiced hand she began to grind the root into a thin powder. She wasn’t going to stick with just one method in an attempt to cure his infection, but rather to spread out the healing herbs and let each help in turn. Turmeric, as the ginger she had used recently, also had a pain killing quality to aid in numbing the area so Dravite could rest more easily.

Carefully, and so as not to cause him additional discomfort, she removed the bandage and cleaned it with a bit of warm salt water; barely enough salt in the mixture to notice, but enough that it would aid in helping the water cleanse his wound. She furrowed her brow when she saw the dark and grainy tissue of his wound as it still worried her. There had to be some way to eradicate that from his body without causing so much pain to him. She studied it closer, without moving it, trying to gauge how deeply the rotting flesh went into the wound. It wasn't terribly deep, especially with her recent surgical remove of some of the bad tissue, but it was still of great concern.

With a small sigh, she began to apply the fresh turmeric powder to the wound and covered it with another clean bandage. Each time he moved while she worked, her hands stilled until he did, before she continued. She had just settled back into the chair next to the bed and gathered Dravite’s hand within her own, cradling it and letting her forehead rest gently upon it when Raven made his entrance. She turned her head and forced a smile when he asked how Dravite was. “He’s resting a little easier,” came her tired response.

His question of how she was remained unanswered as he drew her into that embrace and kissed her head. Raven was a kind man who reminded her often of her own father. Seeing him here now made her realize how much she missed and needed him. She sat once again, as Raven sat, and began explaining what she could to him and ended with, “Infections like this are always difficult to treat, but we’ll do our best,” she always used the term ‘we’ when referring to treating one of her patients as she never felt it was just her. While she had talked, she’d held Dravite’s hand in her own, letting her thumb caress the back of it in a small strokes.

Raven’s stories always captured her interests. The man could tell a story like no other she had met. The longer he talked, the more she began to realize that what he was saying was the answer she had been searching for. Maggots. They only eat dead or rotting flesh, never good flesh. If placed on a wound, such as Dravite’s, they would remove all the dead flesh and leave only the good, thus allowing the healing process to begin more quickly. Pearl must have looked shocked, or elated, she really didn’t know which, but whatever it was, it brought a grimace to Raven’s face and an apology from his lips. “No, no. Blessed Mother Semele!” she exclaimed. “Raven, you’ve done it!”

Pearl moved more quickly than she thought she could have in her current state; her fatigue all but forgotten as she gathered the man in a hug and kissed his cheek. “It’s perfect. You’re perfect,” she said before she kissed his cheek again.

Stepping to the door, she called for Star, who wasn’t too far away telling her tales of Dravite's heroism and explained to her that she needed her to go and gather a jar of maggots. Star blinked before her eyes went round in disbelief. “Go!” Pearl proclaimed. “And bring back more warm milk too!” Star didn’t argue, but left immediately to gather the items Pearl needed. Pearl made that squeak of a sound as she looked at Bayon. “Maggots!” she said, both hands rising into the air in victory and grinning before going back into the room fully.

When Pearl turned back to Raven, her guilt shown in her eyes. She had been so focused on caring for Dravite, that she had failed to ask about the rest of her family, in particular, Garrison, Kyanite and Belkaia. She wanted to ask about them now, but she didn’t want to speak of them and risk upsetting Dravite. “Please give them all, everyone, my love?” She wanted to assure him, to tell him to assure everyone else that she and Dravite would be home soon, but it was still too risky to proclaim that just yet.

"Of course I will," Raven smiled sadly, "take care of that boy..." He thumbed his eye and rubbed his face, "he's all I have left of my sister Lazuli." Raven embraced the young woman again before taking his leave to return to the Blackwater campsite and make sure everything continued to run smoothly while their Ankal was out of action.

6th Bell, Early Morning

Was that feeling creeping back into his leg? Dravite wondered as he opened his eyes, summoned from rest by the strange sensation he felt below his right hip. He pulled the blankets back and stared at his bandages for a few long ticks; were they moving? The man looked to his bedside companion who had fallen asleep with her head bowed against his pillow. The horse lord licked his dry lips and made a move to check his wound, lifting one corner of the bandaging tentatively. When a lone, fat little grub escaped to roll down across his lap and onto the bed, Dravite flinched and brushed it away quickly with the back of his hand.

This justified a second, closer inspection which caused the man to lean over the bed and dry-retch for the contents of his stomach was nil. Dravite looked back at the bandages and felt sweat trace his brow, coat his neck and build across his chest. Star raced into the room and held a damp cloth to his temple, "what are they?" He asked.
"Maggots," the woman admitted, "believe it or not they are the good guys in this situation. We are using them to clean your wound; they only eat dead flesh."
Dravite let loose a shaky sigh and furrowed his brow, "they feel horrible, when will they be done?"
Star lifted his bandage to check and the man felt sick to his stomach at the thought of them crawling around on his body, "not long now, they have done a really good job."
He swallowed and took the cloth from Star to clean the sweat from his neck, "was I out long?"
"Most of the evening, you woke once or twice during the night while we worked."
He looked at Pearl, "how long has she been here?"
"All night, you don't remember?"
The man watched his wife for half a chime before answering, "I don't really recall anything other than the Zith attack."
Star offered a small smile, "she must have just drifted off; I was only in here half a bell ago speaking to her."
"What time is it?"
"Early morning on the sixty-second, closer to the seventh bell now."
Dravite nodded, "you can go."
"Do you want me to wake her?" Star asked.
"No," he shook his head once, "thank you for your help."
"You're welcome," the woman chimed before leaving the room.

Dravite lay on his left side to keep the pressure off his right hip while he watched Pearl sleep and did his best to ignore the maggots at work; the poor girl looked exhausted and he couldn't wait to get her home and out of that terribly, awkward sleeping position she had fallen into. After a few chimes had passed he chose to wake her, just enough to guide her onto the bed so that she could lie down next to him. He stroked her hair back from her face gently and pressed his lips to her hairline. When she stirred he offered a slow smile, eyes still heavy with sleep, and whispered softly, "hello, thank the gods for you, my love."

1st Bell, Early Morning

When Star returned with the acquisitions Pearl had instructed her to get, she immediately set to work. Dravite’s bandage was removed from his leg and she grimaced again at the darkened flesh, clearly unhappy with the look of it upon her husband. “You won’t win. You won’t beat me. Not this time,” Pearl murmured directly at the wound. “He’s mine, and you won’t take him from me.”
Star chuckled, but cut off the sound immediately, looking at Pearl with a heightened brow, to see if she would be offended.
Pearl’s only answer was a smile and a wink to her assistant.

The turmeric had had time to work; Pearl washed away the remaining bit of powder from the wound with a solution of salt water as carefully as she could. She and Star worked alongside one another, and as with seasons of doing such, had to communicate little with verbal words; Star anticipating Pearl’s needs, and passing her the necessary tools, bandages and solutions with ease. When it came time to apply the maggots, Pearl paused as if to gather her thoughts and look to Star. Each of the women exchanging a look that spoke volumes.

While Star held the jar that had the maggots in it out to Pearl, she plucked them out one by one with a tiny wooden stick she had fashioned from the Acklar Tree, and set them each to the wound at Dravite’s hip. When the wound was covered in squirming little maggots, Pearl watched them; her brow furrowed as she wondered what Dravite was going to have to say about her utilizing him for her first ever experiment with maggots and rotting flesh. Decidedly she nodded, a small smile forming; he could say whatever it was that he wished to say, so long as he was alive to say it.

The maggots were then covered in a bandage before Pearl and Star began to clean up. Each still being rather quiet as they worked so as not to disturb their patient. Pearl signed to Star, rest, gratitude, while nudging the bucket at the end of the bed towards Star with her foot, burn, please, signing again, before she put another in its place. Star nodded and signed back as she paused at the door, three bells, return. Pearl nodded.

It wasn’t easy, letting the maggots do their work without checking on them constantly. Every fifteen chimes Pearl was pulling back the bandage to see how the wound was looking. Each time she looked, she was more and more impressed by what she saw. When Star returned three bells later, they began their work anew, this time, removing the fat, full maggots that were on the wound, placing them in the bucket at the end of the bed, and putting fresh, hungry ones back in their place. It was a tedious process as Pearl was being very careful not to crush or harm the little squirmers. It was close to the 6th bell by the time they had finished and Dravite’s leg was wrapped in a fresh bandage. Star removed the bucket of waste at the end of the bed and replaced it with an empty one as she left husband and wife alone.

6th Bell, Early Morning

Pearl had spent the remainder of the night, watching her husband, checking him for fever and being content to let the maggots perform their duties without constantly checking on them this time around. Her chair was brought closer to the head of his bed. She slipped easily into sleep with her hand at his forehead and her own resting near her arm against his pillow. When she was gently nudged awake, it took a moment for her to gather herself to her surroundings, but when she did, her eyes flew open wide and she looked to her husband in fear. Easily, though, he soothed her and drew her into bed against him where she rested for a few more chimes, her fear quelled.

She began to stir upon the bed and with his gentle kisses at her brow she opened her eyes and looked to him; a gentle understanding held within the blue pools. Even though she was tired, there was clear relief upon her features. His fever was reduced, he knew her, and spoke easily, his words not broken or slurred. “I told you I wouldn’t leave you,” she whispered in return to him.

Pearl touched his face with her fingers, drawing a line down the side of his cheek and over his jawline as she looked to him. His flesh was cool to the touch, and showed no traces of fever at the moment. She smiled again; unable to contain her pleasure at simply looking upon him as he seemed to be healing.

She slid from the bed and stood next to it, another loving touch given to his cheek before she leaned in and kissed where her fingers had been only moments ago. “I’ve a few things to explain to you. First the maggots. Let me check their progress and so long as it’s good, we should be able to take you home for the remainder of your recovery. It’s never good to linger here with an open wound for longer than necessary. Too many infections come and go, and I can care for you at the pavilion as easily as I can care for you here. Benefit of being married to a doctor,” she smiled again.

Pearl stepped around to the opposite side of the bed, where her table was and began to remove the dressing. “It was Raven that gave me the idea, actually. He told me the story of when River was hurt and the doctors used maggots to remove the dead flesh at her knee. It was a sign, love, as sure as we are both here now. The Goddess was telling me that was the cure I was searching for. It was perfect,” she talked as she worked, removing the last of the maggots and placing them in the bucket at the end of the bed with the fouled bandages. Fatigue was still with her, but her head was clearer after the few chimes of rest she had managed. “They only eat dead flesh, never good, so I knew they would be able to help. It has taken most of the night, but,” her words slowed as she checked his wound carefully, “but they’ve done it, my love. None of the blackened tissue remains.” Pearl released a sigh of relief.

Pleased now that his wound was looking more manageable, she cleaned it once again before treating it by using some of the turmeric powder and then covered it with a fresh bandage. Star had scuttled in again to help and as she was on her way out with the waste bucket once again, Pearl stopped her. “Star? Would you let Bayon know that I’m ready to take my husband home now?”
Star gave a nod and smiled to Pearl. “I surely will.”
Pearl couldn’t help but to smile at the way Star said that. “Don’t keep him from his duties, I need his help.”
“There you go again, spoiling all my fun.”
“Oh shush.”
Star left, a playful smile on her face as she closed the door behind her.

Dravite found the explanation of the maggots fascinating and it suddenly made sense to him why the little things were so easy to come across whenever he was exploring kill sites or the remains of a long dead animal. He never could have imagined they would have any other use, other than bird food perhaps. The thought made him smile, or maybe it was just the relief in Pearl's blue eyes that allowed him to grin and bear the pain as she worked on cleaning out his wound for the last time before he would be able to go home.
"I tried to take care of it," he admitted, "while we were on the road; I boiled a cloth in salt water and cleaned it twice a day, but I had little luck I suppose."

He fell silent while Star was in the room working alongside his wife. The wound was going to cause him a lot of grief for the next few days at least, but with Pearl there to look out for him, he had a lot better chance of surviving this one. As soon as Star was bid to fetch Bayon and the door fell closed, Dravite wrapped his arms around Pearl and kissed her tenderly; his silent thank you to her, one that told of his admiration, trust, faith in her. When the kiss was broken he kept his nose and brow pressed to hers until Bayon came into the room.

"Blackwater," the tall Watchman nodded; it was clear to see the man hadn't gotten a wink of sleep and the tired smile that graced his lips briefly suggested that seeing Dravite up and awake so soon had made it all worthwhile, "let's get you home."

With one arm around Bayon's shoulders and the other linked about Pearl's, Dravite was able to get to his feet carefully. He could walk, but only just; putting pressure on his right leg was agony and his eyes rolled up behind tightly closed lids in an attempt to fight back the pain throbbing in his limb. "One step at a time," Bayon spoke gently, his usual air of authority long gone, "that's right, no hurry."

Outside Cree was waiting; the buckskin stallion nodded his head and raked his front, right hoof against the earth, happy to be reunited with his rider. Bayon helped Pearl up onto the horse before giving Dravite a leg up. "Raven will be there to help us at home," Dravite told him, "thank you for everything Bayon," he held the man's arm and felt Bayon grip his firmly in return.
"Take care of him, Pearl; we'll need him fit for fall."

The three of them laughed tiredly; trust Bayon to speak of getting back to work so soon. As they drew away from The River Flower, Dravite closed his arms around his wife's middle and buried his nose in her hair, eyes closed; trusting Pearl and Cree would both be able to get them home safely without his guidance. The morning air was crisp, the sweet scent of lavender and chamomile flooded his senses, and the warmth of his wife's body tucked against his allowed him to concentrate on something other than the pain; something that, for those few short chimes, allowed him to forget it all completely.
