The familiar crunching of a root and scraping of stone on stone was heard from Pearl’s office at The River Flower as she ground up a small portion of the turmeric root she had in her stores. She wasn’t at all happy with the stocks they had available as everything seemed to be running low and sighed; the knowledge that the stocks they had on hand would not carry them through winter weighed heavily upon her. Pouring the powder into the parchment pouch was done very carefully, so as not to waste any of the precious herb.

“Star, I’m on my way out to forage with Akasja,” Pearl told her assistant as she folded down the parchment pouch on her way out of her office.
“Oh, okay,” Star looked up from her desk and smiled.
“If I’m needed, just send someone to the gates, father will know how to find me quickly.”
“Be careful and try to enjoy your time out!” Star called out as Pearl was leaving.
Pearl waved over her head and disappeared out the back of the tent to where Knox was waiting patiently.

Greetings, ride, forage, she signed to Knox as she was approaching; the horse returning a nicker while he pawed at the ground with his left foot three times. Knox liked to count the signs she gave him and pawed the ground each time she signed to him; corresponding with the number of signs she had given him. Pearl chuckled. It was their little game. The pouch of turmeric was tucked away in the yvas bags, inside her medical supply bag, before she mounted up.

The streets were full in Endrykas and she and Knox had to be mindful of their steps through the crowds. “Easy boy, that’s it,” she praised him while leaning forward to pat him on the neck. Pearl gave easy commands with her feet, touching his left side, then his right, to help guide him though the people and stalls of the market. She’d thought it would be nice to simply look over the wares on her way to the gates. “Halt,” she said and drew both feet back along Knox’s sides, simultaneously to get him to stop, when she spotted the horse blanket and hood in the stall with the colours of the Blackwater.

It took no time to purchase the blanket and hood as Pearl wasn’t about haggling over the price. She merely paid for it and then stored the newly purchased items in the yvas bags. “You’re going to thank me come winter time,” she told Knox, who craned his head around to see what Pearl was on about as she kept stuffing and shoving at the blanket to get it into the bag. Once she was mounted back up, they moved along through the crowds until they were out of the market area and close to the gates.

“Morning, Pearl, Knox,” Bayon spoke to them as they approached.
“Morning, Bayon,” Pearl slid off Knox’s back as he nickered his greeting to Bayon, turning his head to shove nose at the man’s shoulder. For some reason, Knox had an affinity for Bayon, and it always made Pearl smile.
Bayon gave Knox a small rub over his nose in return, “You mind taking a look at something for me?”
“Not at all,” her brow rose in question as she stepped back to get for her medical bag. Bayon didn’t often ask her to look at anything, and she assumed it was something, or someone, needing medical attention.
“River took a pretty hard knock in training. Nothing serious, we thought, until the swelling continued.”
Pearl blinked several times, River was Dravite’s cousin, Raven and Yuki’s daughter, “Where is she,” she asked in haste.
“Right over here,” he led her to where River sat with her knees bent and her head resting on her arms folded over them.
Pearl approached the woman, “River?” a hand laid gently on her shoulder, “What’s happened? May I take a look?”

River lifted her head when she heard Pearl’s voice and looked up to the woman. The area just around River’s right eye and cheek was swollen and black with the blood that had pooled beneath the skin. Pearl could tell the swelling was so severe that River’s eye was closed and she was probably unable to open it.
“We were just about to take her to The River Flower but we saw you heading this way,” Bayon interjected, trying to ward off Pearl’s bad mood that he could tell was brewing just below the surface at not having sent her for medical attention before now.
Pearl gave a curt nod before she examined River closely, looking for signs of open cuts and finding none, which was likely the reason for the amount of swelling of the skin and tissues of her face, and due to the deep red, almost black, colour of the skin, the blood was getting old; the older it got without being removed, the worse it would be for River. “Can you open your eye?” she asked River.
“No,” River said with a small shake of her head.

“The good news first, aye,” she smiled that utterly professional smile that she had while she spoke, “we can easily fix this, and you’ll be good as new, well with a black eye good as new, by morning.”
River looked up, a half smile on her face, “I like the sound of that.”
Bayon nodded his agreement, “Me too.”
Pearl continued, “Bad news, I’m going to have to make a few small incisions, to let out the blood and help the swelling go down.” She held up her hand to silence River as the woman had opened her mouth to voice her protest. “They won’t be big at all, and you’ll hardly notice them, with the amount of swelling and pain you already have going on. They’ll only need one stitch in each of them to get them to seal closed, and once they are healed, you won’t even notice the scars.”
“How many,” asked River?
Pearl tilted River’s head up just a bit with a gentle touch of her hand to her chin, studying her injury closely and plotting out in her head exactly where the small incisions would likely do the most good, “Two should do it, one just below the brow bone, so you’ll be able to open your eye again, and another just below your cheek bone. Those are the best places to hide any scarring too. If they do form a scar, you likely won’t see them, nor will anyone else.
“Ready?”
“No, but you might as well do it anyway.”

Pearl took her things out of her bag and laid them out on a cloth she spread out on the ground, assembling the items she would need, scalpel, sutures, hemostats, scissors, and several pieces of cloth, one of which she handed to Bayon. “Soak this in cold water, please. And bring some water back here with you.” When Bayon went to do just that, Pearl poured some of the alcohol on another cloth and began to gently wash River’s face with it, making sure any dirt was removed. “I need you to hold very still, you likely won’t feel much of anything, but it’s important that you hold still.” She explained to River as Bayon was returning, the cold cloth in his hand. “Hold Bayon’s hand and look at him,” she instructed. Bayon knelt down beside River and took up her hand in his larger one, “You just look at me,” he told her again.

Pearl took up her scalpel and dipped it in the alcohol before making quick work of the incisions in the exact places she had told River she would. Once they were made, she put the scalpel back on the cloth and took the cold, wet cloth from Bayon and pressed it to River’s face, applying pressure to encourage the blood and fluids to escape through the incisions. Pearl took one of Bayon’s hands, prying it free from River’s grasp and placing it over the cloth. “Hold this here and make sure you put pressure on it. We need all of that blood out of there.”
Bayon nodded, “Got it.” He smiled, reassuring River. “The worst is over now.”
“She was right. I didn’t even feel much of anything, maybe a pinch.”

Once the blood and fluids were drained sufficiently, Pearl closed the small incisions with one suture each, tying them in place securely. “Come see me in about seven days and we’ll get those removed. In the meantime, I want you to take it easy for the rest of the day. You can do what you want to, but you might get a little light headed or sick to your stomach. Best that you rest today and then return to your normal activities tomorrow morning.” Aftercare was explained by Pearl as she cleaned off her instruments and began to pack them back into her medical bag. “Don’t cover the incisions, and don’t pick at your sutures. They might ooze just a little through the rest of today, but that’s okay. Use a damp cloth and dab, don’t rub. Keep a cool, wet cloth on your face for the next bell, then you should be good to let that go. You can apply pressure if it feels better, but again, don’t rub.”

River nodded her understanding and Peal left her to rest in the shade where she had been sitting. Bayon followed her to Knox and helped her put the medical bag back into the yvas bag. “What are your plans for the day,” he asked her?
“Akasja and I are going foraging. The River Flower is growing dangerously low on herbs and winter is just a head of us.” Pearl felt the frown on Bayon’s face before she looked up to him and saw it.
He scowled a tick longer, “You best be careful out there, you know the Olidosapai aren’t too far away, they were spotted only a couple of days ago.”
She sighed, knowing he was right, but also knowing she had to do something about the stocks at The River Flower.

Reminiscent Foraging [Akasja]

Postby Akasja on September 15th, 2015, 3:35 pm

Akasja cupped her hand around the mortar as another cool breeze blew through her tent. Fall was here. It had been almost a full year since she had arrived in Endrykas. That was still hard to believe. As the wind slowed, Akasja eyed her wolf fur cloak that rested on the tent floor. It wasn't yet cold enough to wear it during the day, but Akasja knew that time would come. Although the seasons in Eyktol had brought fluctuating temperatures, Akasja thought again about the previous winter. Endrykas had been close to Eyktol then, so it was not as cold as it could have been. Still, the Endrykan winter temperatures had been lower than they usually were in the Eyktolian deserts, and it was something Akasja was still unused to. Her fur cloak had certainly come in handy.

Near home again, Akasja thought, and peered longingly out into the plains. She imagined herself tacking up her horse and dashing back to her family. That was not out of the question. But to remain in Eyktol for a long time would be a disservice to her people. Akasja sighed and looked back down at the crushed herbs underneath her pestle. The majority of them were bright red, reminding Akasja of the color of the dye the Tatsuwaat used. How she longed to speak with her family. If only she could find a way to communicate quickly and easily with them.

Akasja continued grinding the herbs until they were uniformly powdered, then carefully emptied the mortar into a jar of plant oil. This she stirred thoroughly, making sure everything was mixed. These mixtures had been one key to her acceptance in the community; Akasja's skill as a herbalist was quickly realized. The particular balm she was making was a modified Eyktolian recipe, something her grandmother had shared. It worked for muscle aches on both horses and people. Here in Endrykas, that recipe was well-appreciated.

Akasja listened to the stir of people outside her tent. The action never stopped here. Of course, Endrykas was huge, multi-cultural, and ever-moving. In some ways it was like traveling with her own clan in Eyktol, though the population size reminded Akasja of the Chaktawe seasonal gatherings. She was still getting used to the volume of people and horses everywhere. And the sea of grass. And the animals. And the plants.

Akasja sighed and sealed the balm she'd been working on. She had been learning a lot, and quickly. After all, that is what she'd come here for. The number one issue, though, was the language barrier. Akasja's minimal grasp of Common did get her through enough situations, and some of the sign language the horse people used wasn't impossible to understand after a while. Still, she yearned to speak Tawna with another Chaktawe, not just to herself when she was alone, or searching for words in front of others. Akajsa had in fact seen the familiar black eyes of her people in one face in a crowd- but that had been fleeting. She hadn't been able to reach the girl in time before she lost her.

There was a lot of work to occupy Akasja. Not long after her arrival, Akasja had discovered the main place of healing for Endrykas. She made herself useful with haste, and managed to communicate her wish to learn and work there. One girl, who called herself Pearl, had been open to Akasja from the beginning. Although she was a bit younger than Akasja, Pearl had a lot of skills in more than just herbalism that made her a sought after healer. Akasja found herself working frequently with Pearl. Even today, on this early fall morning, a meeting with the horse girl was in order. They planned to do some much-needed foraging outside Endrykas. Akasja was ready to once again prove herself worthy of keeping around, and she was ready to learn.

Grabbing her pack, Akasja assembled her supplies inside while still keeping an eye on any movement outside her tent. She liked to have her own space, even though she'd been accepted into the River Flower and was no longer a total stranger. Her tent kept her connected to her people. After applying a streak of white clay to her face, Akasja gathered her things and stepped outside to her Desertbred mare.

Pearl would be arriving soon, but Akasja could not pass up the opportunity to groom her horse. Horses were so prized among the Drykas that Akasja wanted others to know that she, too, had a worthy mount and was skilled with it. Of course, her horse was not familiar with these lands either, or the terrain, but she was clever, hardy, and loyal. Akasja ran her hand along her horse's warm, black hide and clucked softly to her.
"Good morning, my friend,"
she said in Tawna. "Today we ride again."

Akasja began the work of brushing her horse down, getting her coat shiny and dust-free. If she had time, Akasja thought she might even weave a few feathers in her mane.

Reminiscent Foraging [Akasja]

Knox carried Pearl around the last corner and up the road to Akasja’s tent. Pearl drew her feet back along Knox’s side and gave him the command to come to a full stop several feet away from Akasja and her horse. Pearl signed, greetings, apology, late, ready, before she spoke her greeting in common. “Good morning, Akasja. I’m sorry I am late. One of the Watchmen had an injury that needed attention.” Common wasn’t her best language, but she and Akasja had, so far, made a go of their communication through this language, and their knowledge and common interest of herbs, each learning from one another as they went on in their friendship.

Pearl smiled as she recalled the first time she had met Akasja over three seasons ago now. It had been during an emergency at the gates with one of the Watchmen. She often found herself at the gates with her father, treating the men and women of The Watch, and that day had been no different. One of the men had returned from the patrol with some very serious injuries to his arm and his leg. Pearl was treating them as best as she could, but she was one woman with only two hands, and she’d needed help, even to get the man stable enough to move to The River Flower. Akasja was just arriving at the tent city, and she had wasted no time in extending a helping hand. Between the two of them, not even being able to communicate with more than simple common words, they had managed to get the man stabilized enough so The Watch could help them move him to The River Flower for further treatment.

Thinking of the beginnings of their unusual friendship always caused Pearl to smile. Knox nickered his greeting to Akasja’s mount; the horses having also gotten to know one another as the women had. “I brought my herbal book to help us identify anything we might come across while we are out,” she explained in common. Pearl remained on Knox, but didn’t give any indication that she was rushing Akasja. She was happy to go whenever her friend was ready. “I know The River Flower will be happy with whatever we are able to find and bring back.”

Knox took a step closer to Akasja’s mount and Pearl clicked at him with her tongue against the roof of her mouth. Knox immediately stopped, though he shook his head in protest. “Oh stop, you,” she spoke in Pavi to him. “You’ll get to run with her soon enough, and mingle in the grasses while we forage. A little patience now won’t hurt you any,” she leaned forward and patted Knox’s neck affectionately to help settle the stallion.

Akasja felt Pearl approaching on her horse before she could hear them; Akasja's sensitive fingers had brushed through the air a couple times, feeling for sudden activity, as she worked on tying a third crow feather into her horse's mane. The little project was coming along quite well, and Akasja was pleased. When she felt a steady forward motion through the air, the largeness of the movement's mass, Akasja knew she was probably dealing with a calm horse and rider. Quickly she looked up, meeting Pearl's gaze, and watched Pearl's signs. Akasja remembered greetings, and signed that in return. The other words Pearl made looked familar, but Akasja was not able to translate them. Still, Akasja thought she had seen Pearl apologize. Furrowing her brow momentarily, Akasja wondered what the young doctor would think if Akasja suddenly started rattling off sentences in Tawna -or even Arumenic.

Pearl was easier to understand with Common. Akasja nodded as she listened, turning back to her horse to add the last touch to her work. The Chaktawe smoothed her horse's mane, took a step back, and smiled. She would probably leave the feathers in for as long as they managed to stay.
"You are good doctor," Akasja remarked, turning to face Pearl again with a gentle smile. She looked over the smaller woman again, knowing that despite her youth, she had been through a lot, and her intelligence was unmistakable. "You help me very much." Thank you, she signed.

Pearl did not dismount, and Akasja did not want to waste any time. She grabbed her pack and prepared her horse for riding -which truly did not take long. Her preparations were alike those of the Drykas, who did not use a saddle, but some other similar mechanism. Very minimal tack was needed, which spoke to the Drykas' unique skills on horseback and their ability to connect to their animals. Akasja liked that. She fitted reins to her Desertbred, gave the mare a once-over, and then, satisfied, slid her pack across near the withers and secured it.

Before Akasja mounted her horse, she saw Pearl reveal a small book and explain that they might need to use it. Akasja figured they would -at least she would. Pearl would probably have to read the words to her, but Akasja would be able to recognize the plants. Akasja knew the deserts of Eyktol intimately, but these grassy lands still held many mysteries.
"That is good," Akasja replied, feeling relieved to have the knowledgeable Pearl at her side. "I hope we bring a lot of plants home today."

Akasja smiled as her and Pearl's horses sniffed and nickered at each other. It was good to know that her horse wouldn't be bored or lonely here. Smoothly, Akasja slid onto the Desertbred's back, reins still held loosely.
"I am ready," Akasja said. Her fingers unconsciously touched the hilt of the dagger at her hip. She never went without it -even if she didn't hope to be using it. "Where are we going?"

Pearl was careful to remember that she needed to speak in common when talking with Akasja, but the grass-land signs sometimes flew from her hands all too quickly. “To the East of Endrykas, near the river. When I was out riding with Bayon not so long ago, I saw an Acklar Tree down river. We didn’t have time to stop just then.” Once Akasja was mounted up, Pearl used her right foot to apply pressure to Knox’s side and a familiar click of her tongue against the roof of her mouth, signalling Knox to make his turn to the right so they could head out on the makeshift road towards the Gates of Endrykas. She held Knox at a leisurely walk while they traversed through the town.

“There are also some Slippery Elm Trees just a little South of the Gates. With cold and flu season coming up, I thought we could likely use some of that to help get us all through until spring arrives.” Pearl flipped through the pages of the book to the one she had folded down so she could show Akasja the picture of the Slippery Elm Trees. “These,” she said as she held the book out to her.

Knox eased a little closer to Akasja and her horse and craned his head over towards the mares. He gave a low snort and blew hair threw his nose rather loudly as his upper lip twitched. His way of flirting. Pearl reached out for his neck and gave him a gentle pat. “Easy, Knox,” she spoke to him.

The compliment Akasja had offered her earlier had not gone unnoticed, but Pearl was modest about such things and often didn’t know what to say to such compliments immediately. The young doctor often wore a smile upon her face, as she was genuinely happy. Finally, the words she wanted to say were spoken, “You help me too, Akasja. It is good that we can work together and help one another learn.”

Pearl smiled as the wind caught one of the feathers that was braided into Akasja’s mare’s mane and made it dance over the horse’s neck. Knox tossed his head and gave a low whinny. “Soon,” she voiced to Knox, her legs and feet relaxed at his sides as they neared the Gates and began to depart the tent city. Pearl signed to Bayon, East, South, safe, gratitude, friend.
He gave a nod of understanding before returning the signs, caution, enjoy, friend.
“Tell father hello for me!” she called out in Pavi.
Bayon gave a wave of acknowledgment.

Once they were out of the gates, she reverted back to common. “Do you have anything you are curious about or would like to look for? Something you’ve heard about or seen during your time in Endrykas?”

Reminiscent Foraging [Akasja]

Akasja rode alongside Pearl as the young Drykas spoke with her about the various trees of the region. Pearl pointed to a picture of what she called a "Slippery Elm" tree, something that Akasja knew to be used for sickness. She had traded for it a few times near Ahnatep when she had gone with her father. It did help, but more commonly Akasja and her clan had used desert plants to eradicate seasonal viruses. Akasja did enjoy seeing the different landscapes and flora of Cyphrus. Once Akasja learned of their usefulness, she was able to formulate different medicines quite easily. It was thrilling.

Akasja appreciated the sun on her skin as she rocked gently upon her horse's back. For a while, she and Pearl rode in a pleasant silence, surrounded by small foraging mammals and birds gathering excitedly into flocks. Akasja wondered what they would find out here. They would need as much as could be carried back. Soon it would grow even cooler, and the city would have to migrate again. Akasja thought of the warmth of her golden wolf pelt and was thankful. She would be needing it.
"Does Endrykas get very cold?" Akasja asked curiously. "What happens in winter?" Although she had arrived at Endrykas the previous winter, at that point the city had been closest to the desert border. Perhaps it would get colder before they could migrate again. Akasja remembered the stews she had made in Eyktol. The hearty vegetables, meats, and invigorating spices kept the cold of the desert out of her people's bones. "What is good for soup?"

Reminiscent Foraging [Akasja]

Pearl was careful to set her land marks when they left the safety of Endrykas and headed out into the Sea of Grass. She knew if she kept the visual marker to her right, they would be able to travel East towards the river and the Acklar Tree she had intentions of visiting. They grew so quickly and were unpredictable as to where they could be found, that whenever she spotted one, she made sure to take a some of the bark so her supplies wouldn’t run too low.

It was comforting to have a friend along on foraging trips as the conversation could always help the time pass and make the work not seem like such work. Even when they weren’t talking, Pearl found the silences comfortable and not strained. She kept her eye on the land mark and made sure to steer them in the proper direction. Knox kept trying to pick up his steps, eager to run, but Pearl held him back with gentle commands and a foot at his shoulder. The riding was leisurely on this day, much to Knox’s dismay.

“Oh yes, the winter can be quite harsh,” she explained, “with snows drifting as deep man’s knees at times. Trade slows down as merchants don’t get out as much. But other than that, we continue on, much like anywhere else, I suppose.” She gave a small shrug of her shoulders as she had not been anywhere else to make a comparison.

“I’m not the best cook, so that question would likely be better suited for someone else to answer. But Yuki, my husband’s aunt, makes soups and stews from pretty much any type of meat that we have, and adds some vegetables to it, like onions and carrots, sometimes even some peas and green beans or mushrooms. Once she even made something delicious out of tomatoes so the gravy on the stew was a rich red color,” she chuckled as her stomach chose that particular moment to grumble. “My stomach agrees, it seems. Perhaps you would like to come to the pavilion on evening and share an evening meal with us? I know the family would be more than happy to have you visit. And Dravite’s Uncle Raven tells the best stories ever.”

A few more chimes ride and the Acklar Tree came into view. Pearl stretched upwards on Knox’s back and pointed it out for Akasja. “Just there. See it? That’s the Acklar Tree.” In the distance the twisted, blackened branches of the Acklar Tree reached up from the mangled and twisted trunk from the golden swaying of the grasses around it, “its bark is good for treating headaches and tooth aches. But you do have to be careful not to let the patient have too much else it could be deadly. A small pinch of the ground bark in a small cup of water or milk is quite enough. Or you can even place a small pinch directly onto the tooth.”

When they arrived at the tree, Pearl slid from Knox’s back and took out her hatchet from her yvas bags. She began hacking at the lower portion of the tree, stripping the bark from it. “These trees are not often found. No one that I know of has been able to predict where they will grow, or how often. They don’t last long either. So if you see one, it’s best to forage from it as quickly as possible,” she offered her knowledge freely to her friend and hoped that it would someday aid her and help her grow in her profession.
