"Thunder," the green-clothes man said, and Kyo tilted his face up to squint at the sunny sky. Kyo was dismayed and a little alarmed, though he saw no fresh storm clouds: it had not looked like storms today. It still didn't.

Beside him, the man slapped him on the shoulder and laughed, shaking his head. "No no no," he said in thick-tongued Common, so accented that Kyo, though he had sharp coyote-trained ears, could barely understand him. "No thunder above. Thunder dog. Sire, stud dog. Lightning dog, dam. Bitch dog. Father and mother, yes?"

Kyo had no idea what the man was trying to say. He shook his head, then held up the puppy again --Pack flopped around, trying to break free as usual-- and tried to explain better this time. "I worry. Dog-pup no... no spark. Pup no want find-- find--" But he didn't know the word, even in Common. He took to miming, holding one of his hands up to his head with his thumb-finger at his temple, the others stretched out so his palm faced forward. He made a soft snort-bleat sound, and the green-clothes smiled again.

"Deer," he said. Kyo nodded yes, then made another mime, first couple of fingers held up and bouncing. "Rabbit?" Yes. He made a motion with his hand that he hoped the man would understand, rolling it forward, as if to say go on, or more. "...Animals?"

"Yes! Animals! Pup-dog no interest in hurt animals." He didn't have a word for hunt, either, but he thought the man would understand. And yes, the man was nodding, reaching out to scratch the squirming puppy under the chin.

"Pup does not hunt. No no no. Pup herd. Thunder and Lightning, herding dogs. Pup herd."

But Kyo had no idea what the man was talking about. Ramsay Plainseer
--for that was the man's name-- had been the one to give Pack to Kyo in the first place, that day not all too long ago. Now the man smiled again, eyes lighting to nearly match the dulled grass-green of his clothes, and took Kyo by the elbow. "Come see. Understand." Kyo shrugged, tucked Pack under his arm, and followed.

They went to a place that the man, with much trouble finding the right word, eventually called Pride. There was a great and pervasive animal-smell here, even with a human-form nose, with so many different scents that Kyo could not pick most of them out. There was the mud-stink of pigs and a feathery whiff of some sort of bird. And, of course, the heavy, hard-working smell of cattle and horses. Here and there people rushed about or stood still, all of them paying mind to whatever duties they had. Animals were everywhere, as far as he could see. They kept to groups of their kind, flocks or herds, ignoring the busy human-forms dotted among them and doing what animals did.

In his arms the pup went wild with wiggling, trying to see, to chase, and to the side Ramsay chuckled again.

It was not exactly one place, Kyo saw, but all places. The herds really did go as far as he could see; he stood on tiptoe and craned his neck, looking back, and the herds stretched out, around, throughout what looked like the entire city, blending into other people's places and sometimes into what was called other people's stock. He had known, of course, that the tent-city had animals, especially horses, because how could he not see that, smell that, hear that? But he hadn't realized there were so many! This place was the most concentrated he had seen, with far many more animals than people, and it was amazing. There were so many that his hackles might have risen, had he been coyote. So many he and his dogs could not have eaten them all, even if he ate them all day for every day until he choked and died. Or at least, it looked like that many at this time.

Beside him, Ramsay patted his arm, taking in his wide eyes, and led him on.

They came to a place that smelled like sheep, though these were not exactly the same as the kind he was used to, the ones that could run straight up a rock-cliff. Somehow they were softer-looking, much woollier, fatter, more blank-faced complacent, and with smaller than usual horns. Stock-sheep, he thought, looking at them. Less wild. Drykas-sheep, having lived near people for too long and having been fed too well to really be the same as the others that he knew.

People watched these, just as they had watched all the other animals, with doctor-types checking over a few of them to see if they were healthy-- something that made Kyo nervous. They didn't look at him however, and Ramsay's solid, friendly presence beside was enough to calm him again. The man whistled, not unlike how Kyo had learned to whistle, and two dogs, one male and one female, detached from watching the herd, skirting around the edges, low and fast.

These were of the type that Pack was, and when Pack saw them, especially the female, he yelped so lonesomely and dreadfully that Kyo had to let him down. The pup raced over to touch noses with the female, and she turned to lick his head softly. Suddenly, Kyo understood. "Mother," he said, and Ramsay nodded, pointing first to the male, then the female. "Thunder. Lightning. As you saw. In Pavi," and he said the two names again, but this time in his people's own measured, metered speak. The two dogs perked their ears when their names were called, the male in particular holding his head erect and forward, almost proudly.

They were pretty animals, strong-looking in a whip-sharp way, sleek. Different from the shape of Kyo's dogs, who were more muscled and heavier and much bigger, more powerful. More like the coyote, actually, and around the same size. The female was darker, smaller, with a clever look in her hazel eyes. The male was lighter with more white than black on his strange-patterned coat, and the black that was there had a tint of silver. The male was older, more stately. A prize-dog, obviously a dog of importance from his demeanor. Very handsome. Kyo thought Pack looked more like the female, built smaller and springier with more black spots to him, though he had his father's --Thunder's-- fast, attentive ears.

"Hunt-dogs?" Kyo asked, as the two canines sniffed at him, looking surprised by his scent-- that of a coyote. The father-dog's fur rose a little, teeth showing white, and Ramsay reached to run a hand down his head and back, settling him.

"Not hunt. Herd. You said pup-dog has no spark. Has spark. Not a hunting spark. Is a herding spark. A spark of his parents." Kyo still didn't understand. "Watch," Ramsay said, pointing to the sheep, making some unknown calls
--commands?-- in whistles and a few short words. The dogs moved as one. "See."

Now he understood. Thunder and Lightning, what were called herd-dogs, did not attack animals to kill. They chased, but didn't bite.

He had never seen anything like it before, and it stunned him. They sprinted here and there, so light on their feet they seemed to fly, sometimes running outright, sometimes sneaking with their heads held low and tails tucked as if to fight the sheep. But they never did.

The sheep were ran --were herded, as Ramsay said-- back and forth. The commands were strange noises, mostly trilling, airy whistles and murmured low-speak from the green-clothes. They apparently told the dogs what to do and when. Ramsay said there were four types of call, named go forward, stop, left, and right. Each dog had his own set to listen to, so they knew who Ramsay was calling to when. Thunder ran mostly to the inside, chasing the herd along and keeping them in line. Lightning, the female, was quicker and sure-footed at the outside. She was the one that drove them to go wherever she wanted.

It looked so easy and effortless for the dogs, and Kyo watched Pack as he watched his parents work. Gone was the lazy-bones attitude, lying on his side and showing no interest except in treats and pets. Now Pack held his head completely still, body coiled as if he wished to herd too, watching intently with eyes that might someday become as sharp and clever as his mother's. Looking at him, Kyo felt so stupid for not knowing about this before.

No doubt Pack, with time, might learn to hunt-- or serve some other purpose that was already beginning to take shape in Kyo's mind. But this was what he already knew, or wanted to know. Herding. Showing the animals where to go. Making them go where you wanted, instead of where they did.

It was genius.

The coyote was out in the field, Lightning by his side. Thunder didn't like coyote-smell so much, but Lightning was not afraid and not impressed. They were around the same size, Lightning a little smaller than the coyote, but he knew her teeth were just as good for biting, and that she liked him only because Ramsay liked him. Thunder was too bull-headed to warm up to the coyote so soon, to accept him.

Lightning was bright and almost wicked in her intelligence. Taunting, in a way. Kyo felt a little intimidated when he was near her. He puffed up his chest to bolster himself, and the she-dog smiled at him, one hind foot kicking up dust as if to say newcomer, and to warn him not to be boastful. He obediently deflated, and she laughed with her tongue and eyes, poking him playfully in the side with her nose.

A command came, and her ears swiveled, twisting towards it. She ducked her head, and he understood to follow, trying to commit the whistle-call to memory as he went. The she-dog ran to the side, curving around the edge of the herd and inciting it to run. Left, they were directing the sheep to the left, Thunder no doubt on the other side keeping the rest of the flock where they were supposed to be. Left, then, must be what the signal had meant, a noise sort of long-slow-slow-sharp up. His ears could catch Ramsay saying something in Pavi even across the field, and Lightning obviously picked up the spoken command, looping around faster. Kyo raced to catch up.

It was hard work. Not mind-work, but physical. It would be easy enough, he thought, to learn the commands, but would take a while to remember them as second-nature. His main trouble now was that he wasn't as fast on his feet as Lightning, and was obviously out of shape compared to her slim, lean form. He had run much in his life, but not like this, left and right, zig-zag, sneaking fast, making quick turns on his toes.

His running was for long distances, not sprints, and he had been half-starved by it the last time he traveled. Even now he had not recovered fully. Already the coyote was panting, and his head was beginning to pound and hurt. The horse-kick had not helped either, giving him headaches especially when his blood was pumping hard.

Lightning dashed by so close to the side their fur brushed, lapping him in a quick turn that made him want to snap at her-- playfully of course, though maybe with some irritation. She teased as he had to stop into a down-position on his belly to take a rest.

Far away, Ramsay waved an arm, laughing again --always laughing, Kyo liked that about him-- and the coyote slunk to his feet and drove his way through the herd, purposefully scattering a few of the ones on Lightning's side. She easily had them back to where they were supposed to be, and the coyote had to dip his head to her in acknowledgement. The she-dog flipped her tail once, a snickering salute of her own. She had a nature much like her master, a sense of humor that flowed deep and constant and that never seemed to dry up.

Thunder glowered at him from across the field, still untrusting, and the coyote pattered his way back to Ramsay before plunking down at his side to rest some more. Thunder was not like Lightning and Ramsay, and not like Pack, who came to greet the coyote and chew on his neck. Thunder was too proud to welcome newcomers. Too important a sire to play with someone he didn't know. The coyote would stay away from him and try not to get on his bad side.

"Well?" Ramsay asked, looking down with arms crossed and face expressive. He nodded when the coyote intentionally blew out a bigger breath. "Yes, tired work for some not used to. But Kyo has talent." He grinned at the coyote's dry look. "Talent not like Lightning, no no no, but interest is good. Some work. Some learn. And be good job. So, come back?" His hands made their signs, and the coyote imagined words of encouragement, though he himself was still doubtful. He was just no good at this compared to the others!

"Come on, look and see their jealous?" Ramsay pointed to a group of Drykas lounging near one of the sheep-herds. Sheep-herders. Shepherds. They were looking over, some with calculating expressions. One of them shook a mock-fist at Ramsay, and Ramsay repeated the gesture, a little defiant. "Jealous of man-coyote. Two shapes, good. Smart. Be talent for herd." Then he lowered his voice a little. "So be careful of others, yes Kyo, and come work for Ramsay." Lightning trotted over, done with her showing off for now, and licked at Pack, giving a side-glance to the coyote. "Good for Kyo, good for pup too. Be with mother, learn herd. Have place. Both learn."

And there it was. Even if the coyote didn't think he himself was good enough, not yet, not even close, he knew Pack was supposed to do this. To be a herder. How could the coyote be a good father to him --a father other than Thunder, that was-- if he didn't know how to teach him? If this was Pack's talent, then the coyote needed to understand it well enough to teach Pack. That, or put him someplace where he might have an even better teacher, like his mother, the Lightning-dog.

Hesitantly the coyote nodded, and Ramsay beamed. "Come again! Tomorrow, next, every! Learn." His voice turned a little smug as he looked back at his fellows, who were still watching and talking amongst themselves across the way. "Learn to be greatest! And pup greatest, too. Small, but good breeding. Talent."
